Great video but a tip from many years as a pro. DO NOT USE AIR TOOLS TO START THREADS. Always hand start any screw, bolt or spark plug. If you cross thread using an air tool, it can be pricey to sort out.
Very true, must always start spark plugs by hand first, even with those long extensions, you would feel whether the plug is threading correctly or not.
Excellent video. Without a lift, those long extensions are a necessity. Can’t believe the dealership wants a thousand bucks for a spark plug change. Insane.
I’d NEVER START the spark plug with a air tool or ratchet. If you cross thread that it’s huge money. Start it by using your fingers and once you’re confident its started and threaded correctly THEN use your tools
Perfect angles! Much appreciated, other videos I have seen do not get the correct angles as you have shown. Also, agree with the comment re: start threading with hand.
Great video. Thanks for posting, gives us 991 owners the confidence to DIY these things by buying the simple tools used in the video. Love this. Doing mine this weekend based on this. 👍🏻
Thanks so much for making this video! It changed my mind on possibly buying a 991. I have a 997.2 4S. I was turned off by how Porsche made it almost impossible to work on 911s starting w/the 991 since they reduced dramatically the amount of access to the engine w/a super tiny engine cover.
This video was great! You did wonderful job describing what tools we need and how easily we can do it, however I have a question not related to this video and you might have some answers. I have Carter’s s convertible and I noticed that I have leak in the convertible hydraulic reservoir I just can’t locate the leak. It’s not around the reservoir at all but I’ve seen oil trace behind the rear passenger tire. Any idea how to locate this? Appreciate your time
Amazing video, so helpful and very informative is all details. Hope and pray I can do it by myself. No doubt, it saves significant amount of money by DIY. Porsche dealership is charging outrageous money for all services. THANK YOU !!!
Been a mechanic for 35 years have not experienced the need for anti seize on a spark plug thread. Maybe on a motorcycle where there’s more exposure to water, but not on a car.
@@how2togo Thats cool! I'm researching this same 991 911 and what it'd cost me to maintain it, etc. Your vids are thorough and well done, keep up the good work buddy!
The Air Tool feels like it doesn't have much torque because you aren't using IMPACT SOCKETS. Use Impact Sockets, and you will see a big difference as Impact Sockets are designed to transfer the full impact of the Air Wrench.
Thank you for these videos! I have a 991.1 and your videos have been very helpful and have saved me a lot of money. It is surprising how easy it is to maintain these cars.
I almost fell off my couch when I saw you starting the spark plug with the power tool. People DO NOT do that !!! You will destroy your heads. Always start the plug by hand
I'm a retired A&P mechanic and we always use graphite anti-seize on spark plug threads. And hand tighten it first 2-3 turns to avoid possible cross threading.
Similar but unrelated. My BMW manual says to add light coat of copper antisense to spark plugs and tighten to 18ft lbs. i.e., read or obtain a copy of the factory manual.
Nice Video BUT..........ALWAYS begin threading spark plugs with your fingers, holding the extension and socket. The video should be edited or titles warning the uninformed of the proper procedure. A stripped spark plug hole will require an engine out head removal and repair costing thousands. NEVER USE AIR TOOLS TO START SPARK PLUGS.
You are making things harder on yourself by using those long extensions. Use only as long as you need to keep the extension flex to a minimum. NEVER EVER start spark plugs with power tools….you will hate yourself if you cross thread them….

That’s the same comment I had. You’re risking new heads

Came here just to see if someone already said that. Stopped the video at that point. Big no no.
You are totally right!!!
Huge no no. But your car lived to see
Another day. Next time you know

This is one of the best videos I have seen for walking through the entire process with detailed instructions and views. Well done and thank you!
Excellent video. Without a lift, those long extensions are a necessity. Can’t believe the dealership wants a thousand bucks for a spark plug change. Insane.
This video is exactly what I was looking for!! Good work my man.!! Sick of these, Porsche Mechanics and their scandalous prices!
I’d NEVER START the spark plug with a air tool or ratchet. If you cross thread that it’s huge money. Start it by using your fingers and once you’re confident its started and threaded correctly THEN use your tools
EXACTLY! And also note at 0:51, that torque wrench was "stored" at nearly full torque as the handle was turned up almost all the way.
WOW. This dude is straight insane. There is no way I'd even dare to thread spark plug with an air tool.
Excellent all around and exceptional camera work!
I did mine also. 40k service kit from FCP Euro was 300. It was not hard to do. Great video.

These are great how to videos for a new 991 owner!!
nice job, great step by step video
Thank you for the videos! I appreciate it! Would you suggest putting anti-seize on the plugs and the other bolts? Thanks again!
Outstanding video! Thanks for the detailed process and suggested tools/extension.
Awesome DIY videos! Thank you!
Thank you my friend, it was very easy to explain
You have my utmost respect with you, Salem Al Shamsi from the Emirates

thank you. Hope it is the same procedure as on 991.2.
Just bought a 2014. previous owner said spark plugs were a PIA. Seeing this video let me know it's cake. Thanks!
Very nice. It's worth doing it yourself. More videos on the 911 to come.
Hey I recognize that hill in Terracina! I drive it often. We are neighbors 😂
Very well made video!

Very well done and narrated! I would assume you should use anti-seize on your plug threads though. Correct?
Thanks, anti seize would be bad.
@@how2togo that doesn't seem to agree with the thought by some folks. I know it was highly recommended on motorcycle engines at one time.
Been a mechanic for 35 years have not experienced the need for anti seize on a spark plug thread. Maybe on a motorcycle where there’s more exposure to water, but not on a car.
yes, I saw something official that said do not use anti seize.
Nice video , did you do your belt too at 40,000?
You are a beast! 991 God.
Great video. Thanks. Tackling the plugs for my first time. Does one need to “gap” the spark plugs?
Mine came already gapped from Pelican
Any plans on making a tutorial to replace the nav screen unit with something more modern (i.e. wireless carplay models)?
I've thought about it but probably not. Next is serpteen belt.

It is worth changing the coil packs while doing the plugs
Not really needed unless they're bad.
Thank you for the video
looks scary when you putting in the plugs using the air tool... maybe hand tight for few turns then air tool will be safer
Yes, the airtool I'm using is only 20 lbs torque. This isnt strong enough to ruin the threads.
@@how2togo Why chance it?
@@how2togo You'd be surprised, steel threads in an aluminum head is easy to strip.

Compare to doing Toyota spark plug replacement, this looks like a nightmare! Such a waste of time and money.

Always start the plug by hand
Any thoughts on using anti-seize on sparkplug threads?
The internet has different opinions about it. I'm just not sure.
Great video thanks.
When I take the wheel off, I always throw it under the car. Cheap protection in case it falls from the jackstands.
How do you set the Service Reminder dashboard popup?
You need to watch the entire video. I use a device to reset.
@how2togo FYI, I watched the entire video. I didn't see any info on resetting the service reminder.
Sorry you're right. I used ICARSoft POR 2.0 to do the resets. It works great. Here is a link of this review.(ruclips.net/video/w3kIlCP51U4/видео.html)
How is the condition of the drivers side leather seat after 40k miles?
Still great!
Best angles indeed👍
Why are you changing the plugs @ 40,000 miles? They are good for 100,000 miles at least.
Porsche service is 40k or 4 years.
@@how2togo Porsche want to make money from people afraid to do what you are doing.
without a turbo the spark plugs is very very easy to change ....
A thousand bucks for spark ⚡️ plug change at the dealer??!!?
Yes, they charge outrageous money for any service from Porsche dealship.

Yes I agree but my air tool has very little torque and I did start it by hand. Maybe that didn't show in the video.
I would not use the airtool to start the spark plug. If it crossthreads, you have no idea, and bye bye to your aluminum heads.
I was going to say not to use air tools, but it's in the comments. Hate to buy a used car with stripped threads or someone screwed up
Shame! For shame! Your tire is soooo FAT! :)
Thanks for this video!
How is a screwdriver a luxury?
Lol,
You are making things harder on yourself by using those long extensions. Use only as long as you need to keep the extension flex to a minimum. NEVER EVER start spark plugs with power tools….you will hate yourself if you cross thread them….
All that just to change Spark plugs, no thanks Porsche flat six.
Never never never use a neumatic tool in the spark plug never that’s is so stupid do by hands
