I’m about as mercenary as one can be, having spent many years as a freelancer - every hour counted and if I wasn’t paid I didn’t do the work. However, I think all those here in the comments saying to never do any work without being paid directly are wrong. As you said, you were in something of a rut and wouldn’t have necessarily been doing something as productive and interesting with your time otherwise. I think that’s the key. If you had a mountain of paying work that would have created an opportunity cost, then you have to weigh the decision personally. There are other currencies than money, and the things you learned, the relationships you established, and the work you created all have value. No one should be condemning you for your decision.
Fuji owe you big time for all the videos you have produced over the years about the brand, giving new or current owners tips and things the cameras can do, plus you have been free marketing for Fuji enticing people to pick one up
Thank you for this making-of podcast! Concerning sponsoring I have thought about it the other way round: If I were a lead marketing person of a company, what could I expect from "bribing" a RUclipsr? If I was paying him or her too much, s/he would be biased, loose their authenticity which long-time followers would recognize and do damage to my brand and the RUclipsrs alike. Paying too low could backfire as lame and boring reviews or even harsh critics, and at the end both sides feel betrayed. That's why I think it's a clever compromise to give savvy and media-experienced persons the opportunity to "play" with my products, pay for the expenses along the way, and let them create something they own (incl. the rights to use it as they want to) and the way they like it to create. If my expenses (as a marketing guy) and the creator's efforts are balancing with the results on both sides, it's a win-win solution.
Upfront, I’m a hobbyist. I am also a lawyer and bill my hours. I personally don’t work for free and I think you shouldn’t either. Maybe you could have booked some other clients in those two days. That may sound harsh, but your time and effort are valuable. If your time and effort weren’t valuable, they wouldn’t ask you to make the videos. They know how big your channel is. They know you get views. You are a professional photographer and you’re worth it.
Totally agree with that. Whenever you create added value that shouldn't be free of charge. And your viewers will / should understand that. I do :-) I love watching your videos since many years ago and I'm not even a Fujifilm shooter.

You see people doing all sort of things for free because they win more with the video they make about it than charging the client for it. The opportunity of filming something becomes the source of revenue. And I don't mean anyone is right or wrong to pay or not to pay. And I don't think not getting paid gives more freedom because if the video doesn't suit fuji, paid or not, they could decide to not invite him anymore. It ends about finding a deal both sides agree with. He can also open a marketing company and get contract for making promotional videos but it's another job. He felt the difference between his way to work and the pro crew work. Lot of ways to make a livin ...
It seems to me, the fundamental question is, what relationship with Fujifilm helps to build your brand. You're at 200K subscribers and there's no reason you shouldn't be targeting 1 million. Your brand is an essential element in achieving that goal. Does being paid by Fujifilm for your time support your brand better than Fuji paying expenses and you volunteering your time? You know your brand better than me so, I won't presume to answer the question. But I do think that's the essential question: which relationship with Fujifilm (any camera maker) is best aligned with your brand?

I’m a long time viewer of your channel and I’m so happy that Fujifilm are recognizing your dedication and devotion to the brand and gave you this amazing opportunity. However, I disagree with their idea of not compensating you. It’s the basic principle of your time having value (just like everyone else involved in the project) as a professional photographer AND RUclipsr/influencer. The value cannot and should not be zero. That is just wrong. I can understand it should not be an exorbitant amount which may influence your views, however it is easy to come to an agreement on a reasonable amount that wouldn’t be considered a “bribe” as another comment mentioned. I think it says something wonderful about you, Omar that you are such a kind and giving person/artist. You are clearly inspired by the project and motivated to create and enjoyed the process. And if that is ok for you then I certainly don’t criticize you for doing it. At the same time, no matter how much I enjoy the work, I personally couldn’t stomach doing it for free out of principle.
I enjoyed this longer format. It was interesting to peek behind the scenes. Omar, you are a large part of the reason I decided on a Fujifilm XT-2 back in the day (had been a Nikon gal until then). Since I am not a pro, I am still using that same XT-2 and still loving it.
Branding is my profession, and photography plays a very important role in it. But it's photography driven by a vision to create through creativity and originality. Your trip with Fujifilm fits perfectly with this approach, especially because you always share your passion, doubts, and humor with us. Your followers recognize this, which allows them to make their own informed decisions about whether to buy a Fujifilm camera or lens. Fujifilm is worth over $26 Billion. I'm guessing your net worth is less. They can afford to pay you. And they should. They should also have the guts to allow sponsored artists/photographers to review their products candidly and honestly. I think all companies should do this if they have any integrity. Even if they had paid you in this instance, having watched so many of your videos, your reactions and your enthusiasm are always sincere. And the information and insights you offer are valuable. After starting out on a basic Canon Rebel, I researched cameras for a pretty long time before deciding to switch to Fujifilm. Watching your videos was super helpful and part of the reason I ended up with Fujifilm. I'd say they owe you.
You make so many interesting points about the industry towards the end of this video. It was almost an unconscious thing on my end, but like a lightbulb going off, I realized one of the things I really like and enjoy about your channel, is the fact that you don't interrupt your videos to tell us all in painful detail, how great Squarespace (or some other product) is. - beyond your very balanced opinions on camera gear that your audience has come to respect and rely on. I understand what you're saying, but creators have to have a way to make money especially when you consider that RUclips's ads don't cover everything. Sponsorships go a long way in allowing creators to providing more content rather than being an Uber driver on the side.
In France we have a saying : "All work deserves wages". By the way the format they have chosen is cool and you can stay honest and inspire people. Your old youtube videos from 5 years ago, help me a lot to understand the beauty of the photography creation process, and I am happy to have boughten a Fuji XT 30 to play with the film simulation, without having to work in post process too much.
I don't see anything wrong with sponsoring an author who freely expresses his opinion. If the author openly works for the company, this is also possible, but there is less trust. Everyone decides for themselves. But we trust you, Omar! :) And the coffee video is so funny! And one of my favorites on the channel. My wife and I watch it many times when we want to have fun. I like that the video was unsponsored. They told you upfront about the compensation situation, and you decided that it was worth it to do it anyway. You each got something positive out of it. Btw, I really liked that at the end of the video you made you thanked Fuji for the ride you’ve had with them. I thought that was classy. I know lately you’ve been doing more with your Nikon gear. Overall, I thought the video you made was fantastic and told a great story. Well done!
I'm pretty sure you will remember the helicopter ride over Manhattan far longer than depositing a check from Fujifilm. I think you came out ahead on this one. Great video Omar.

I’m from a marketing and brand management background. In terms of brand equity, don’t worry, you got a good deal - so did Fujifilm, but that was the whole point of the project.
Honestly, I got over my GAS problem years ago! I pretty much never buy anything based on a YT video. I'll go into a shop and get my hands on a camera and see how it feels, or buy it and try it, returning it if I'm not happy with it. The value of these promo videos is simply to see what features a camera has, rather than reach a buying decision.
This video reminded me of that XT-50 video which I enjoyed thoroughly. Now I need to go back and re-watch it... was so good. Oh... happy they asked you to join up for this video... you worked hard for this and look at the great content we got because of it. My wife who cares nothing for cameras enjoy all your videos and laughed out loud at the XT-50 video.
I would absolutely trust you even if it was a sponsored video. I bought a Fuji camera over 5 maybe 6 pls years ago because of you. I don't watch all the RUclips videos I subscribe to all the time due to real life getting busy, elderly parents, just life in general. I think you should have been compensated for your time, effort, energy that you put into this project. I also think that it was a nice thing for you to get to experience. You met another artist, worked with different people when you mostly work alone and possibly it jumpstarted your creativity again. And I just have to say that you are the sweetest. I have been around since your channel was small and haven't watched in a while but I was very happy to see that it has grown over the years and you deserve it!!
Omar, Fascinating to see behind the curtain and learn how all this marketing comes together. Oh, and that helicopter ride, doors open, hanging out that open door…freaken intense! I think we here in the audience can tell the RUclipsrs who shill for the companies versus those who are trying to maintain impartiality. So you gotta decide which of those people you want to be.
I think the photography RUclips community seems to be going a similar route that the tech reviewers have been dealing with years. It seems to be a very fine balance between sponsorship and bias - and also appropriate compensation you do to promote the products directly or indirectly. I think you struck a very fine balance and it seems the brands trust you, but at the same time your audience too. I discovered your channel thanks to one of your X-T3 setup videos, but stayed for more because you provide long term use of the products you showcase and also provide gripes with the products as well so we know what to expect. A lot of other channels just provide the spec sheet and their shooting experience from the press event and then radio silence about that product afterwards.
I think in this instance, since I have been watching you for ages and know kind of where you stand, I think it's fine. You have mentioned over and over again that you like all cameras so I'm already going in expecting that. I say if you had a good time and it was beneficial for you, whether creatively, financially etc, Id say it was time well spent. Thanks for the video Omar. Super interesting to listen to and watch. Great chat, Omar. I worked with friends on a 48 hour film project and was having flashbacks of all the prep to get two minutes of usable footage here, thirty seconds there … fun, but for a first-timer it was eye opening! As for credibility, disclosure up front is key for me. And then you judge by the evidence. Show me, don’t tell me. So seeing someone take the pictures, cull, edit the files, present finished results has 100% use value, versus on the other extreme someone blabbing and adjective bombing. It doesn’t have to be dry, have humor, personality, but always show the goods. So the personality gives me a read on trustworthy versus snake oil, and then the evidence lets me judge. And you get top marks! Lol
The fact that you are even asking about if we would trust you if sponsored, says everything to me. I continue to watch you if you are sponsored or not.
Very interesting video. I have enjoyed your channel for a long time. I can see how doing this got the creative juices flowing again. New gear always does that for me. I think the sponsorship, paid thing is closely tied to the "relationship", your viewer, "me" has developed watching your videos over a significant amount of time, and whether you have convinced me of your integrity. In your case you have convinced me of your unbiased evaluation of gear and your desire to not only evaluate but to teach and instruct how to become a better photographer. Great podcast. As a RUclips viewer on your channel I listen because I enjoy hearing your opinion on both the pros and cons of different cameras and shooting styles. I understand your dilemma regarding payment. Being truthful is always the best policy. Every camera has it drawbacks and also shines in a variety of ways. The consumer has to decide which camera delivers what they want for their style of photographing. Being paid to promote a new camera takes integrity and I think you have that. That's one of the reasons I follow you. You did seem to have a great time and met some new folks along the way. I think not getting paid frees you up to address issues that may not be so favorable. You are doing a great job all around. I want to try a Fujifilm camera, just hunting for the right one for me. Don't beat yourself up about getting rewards; your honest character is reward enough.
I love your channel and you seem trustworthy to me. I don’t think this would change, if you did a few sponsored videos. I definitely prefer videos about photowalks, motorbiketrips and so on. As long as we don’t lose those and as long your channel doesn’t become to one of those „best camera ever made review“-channels we see constantly on YT, I wouldn’t be mad. Cheers

I don't think that sponsorship would ruin your brand but the real question is do YOU think that it would CHANGE YOU, your personality, YOUR passion? Your videos display your honesty, excitement and passion for photography, The real question is: would those qualities morph into something else because you are guaranteed sponsorship. Would it change your motivation or passion?
You nailed it Omar, just be open about the intent of the video. I would expect you to say how well something worked or if it doesn't work, why. Plus, I recall you taking a trip on Sony's dime before to see their new gear, etc (I could be wrong, but don't think so), so it's cool. You have to feed the fam and let's face it the videos are entertainment, it's why we all keep coming back.

I prefer unsponsored videos for reviews with full disclosure. Even sponsored videos are okay with full disclosure but I am aware of the bias. I think Fujifilm came out ahead financially and you came out ahead with the experience. 😊
Loved your soul searching video. Your subscribers trust you, and as far as I am concerned , a secondary financial benefit can only provide more support for your channel. Keep telling it like it is, and keep us laughing at your goofy humor.
I think you have made the right decision on the ancient big dilemma, because in your case this is how you can maintain the balance... Unfortunately, here in Europe, in the last 20 years, not only large companies but also private customers are slowly starting to want everything for free... They always say that it should be an honor for us, I mean for us for artists... I think the solution would be to talk about it as much as possible, definitely hard but creatively and openly, so that the message is received on the other side as well... Maybe this way things can slowly change and improve

Although I found you through Fujifilm, I enjoy your videos because of you. I know you use Nikon professionally. I couldn’t care less what brand you use and who sponsors you. As long as you have fun videos, I am going to keep watching you. If you can get paid, go for it. Just don’t take time out the video to speak about “today’s sponsor”. I am already watching minutes of ads forced on me by RUclips , the last thing I need is to hear youtubers ramble about sponsors.

Fuji definitely got the better end of the deal. They not only got two days of work from two different photographers completely for free, but they also got something more important: street cred for the new cameras. For free. You guys were used, no doubt about it.
I dont see it that way. Omar got some serious recognition as premium content producers and an incredible experience. This could open doors to other professional opportunities down the road and im sure he learned a ton as well not to mention his direct connections with corporate Fuji.
As you can find in the comments, I think occasional sponsorship or paid contents are fine as long as fully disclosed. There's any way some bias no matter what. We just get to know the youtuber over time and understand the bias as well, whether that's coming from being a fanboy or being paid. Being a brand ambassador is a whole lot different though. Anyway, this gig would be something I would definitely do as well if I had skills like yours. I'm glad you had fun!
Hi Omar. This is a great video. It is really interesting to hear and see how these things are made and also to get a handle on at least a little bit of the financial angle. At one point in your video you referred to any financial renumeration you might have received as 'passive income'. Omar, there was nothing 'passive' about your input to the final piece of work. So, personally, I think you deserve to receive proper financial reward for your input.
I have watched your channel for years and I remember back in the day when Fujifilm didn’t send you anything, didn’t invite you anywhere, you used black tape a lot (😂) etc and you continued to use Fuji because you loved them. If memory serves correct I think you made a joke about the situation in one or two videos back then. The reason I say this is because you work hard and have been very passionate about the Fuji system for years and highlighted both good and not so good stuff, so a little recognition from them is great in my book. You didn’t do it for the payoff it recognition and they realised you deserved some thanks so that’s awesome - and they continue to benefit from your videos both new and old. Regarding sponsorships I think like any group of people RUclips has good and not so good creators. You are one of the good ones and realise that if you said something was amazing, a load of followers went out and bought it and consequently found out it was rubbish you would do harm to your channel. More than that though, I don’t know you personally but from the years I’ve watched you, you’ve always seemed genuine and caring, both in video work and when you were shooting bar mitzvah type stuff and you really wanted the best for the subjects. So for you, get sponsors, get paid for your hard work, and while it may annoy some the core of your audience will be happy for you. You be you fella, we’re here for it.

Let me tell you my story, I was in the market for my first camera and I had watched so many videos and I was able to glean that for my type of photography it was between Fuji xt5 or Nikon zf. As someone who had no idea about cameras or photography apart from rule of thirds lol. I definitely didn’t take any review as concrete reasoning behind my final decision. I guess what I am trying to say is that people have access to a ton of information that help them make the smart decision in the end. I don’t believe they rely solely on one channel or one review and can often see through by the BS. I must say I have throughly enjoyed your content and your practical take on reviewing. So I 100% for you to take up on sponsorship and monetise your channel that way. How far into your future that sponsorship goes is something you will have to decide and negotiate and ultimately what you want from the channel and what you want to give the audience. I don’t think doing partnership is that big of a deal tbh.

Your question: yes, I trust you and your opinions. Being sponsored would not affect that trust, but . . . if you had been sponsored would you have had to keep saying, "my honest opinion" etc . . .?
Just because reviewer likes or dislikes a feature doesn't mean the viewers has to agree or even be interested in that feature. No matter how much the company is paying you to hype it ;) I think the majority of viewers just wants to know what's new. And if you helped selling a few units, why should you work for free for that company.
Tough call, Omar. Just like the photographer who should never do free shoots for experience or exposure - everyone’s time is valuable. You have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this channel and content - and have been very consistent with creation and cadence - and I am sure at times when you were less inspired or in a rut. I think at some point if YT itself is no longer providing an income - you and only you will need to decide on how sponsorships/sponsored videos should be for you. Hard decision - I know you will make the right one for you, your reputation/credibility and your family. (BTW - yep, you have sold a lot of Fuji cameras! At least to ‘me’ over the past 7 years!)
I think there's a fine line that has to be walked with regard to sponsorships, etc. I like seeing those kinds of "promotional" videos from some creators, particularly being able to see the final results of what they are able to achieve with the gear they are promoting. If I see a video or photo that I like, then I know that's possible with that camera. That kind of promotional work is valuable to a company and I think you should be compensated. On the flip side, if I want the straight up truth about a system, all of its limitations or things that just plain suck about it, then no, I would not trust a sponsored video. I'm not talking about you specifically, I just mean anyone. There are a few reviewers on RUclips that I trust a great deal for the hard truth about cameras, lenses and other gear. But that's a different type of content than "promotion". I think it all comes down to being open with your audience, recognizing that there are different kinds of content, and having a hard code of ethics for whatever kind of content you do. As far as what constitutes adequate compensation for you with certain types of content, I think that's up to you or other individual creators. Sometimes, the exposure from a national/global launch like this can bring more people to your own channel. But if you don't need that exposure, and you have your own thriving business that requires your attention, then it's fair for you to get some sort of remuneration whether it's cash or even a free camera or two. I think Fujifilm and other companies would more than get their money's worth by compensating someone like you with a good-sized audience. Marketing on this level isn't cheap, and they can save $$ by doling out free gear since their cost on that gear is nowhere near what they'd pay if they had to stroke you a check. The most important thing is to disclose all compensation including every freebie, whether it's a free camera, free trip, free dinner, or whatever. If a creator doesn't disclose that and then I find out later, then they will have lost my trust. Even if it's not technically a "sponsored" video, but the company lets a creator keep a piece of gear, that should absolutely be disclosed since that can create bias on the creator's part. First, because they feel obligated to say good stuff for the free gear, and second, because the creator might hope for future opportunities to get free gear. There's nothing wrong with being compensated for your time, effort and expertise. It all comes down to how honest you are with your audience. Some people might not like creators making big money or getting free stuff, but I think they are the minority. Most people understand that you have to make a living and will not hold it against you provided that you are not deceptive about the process.

On being paid i'd normally say 'you should be' but given you were in a bit of a rut - and this seems to have inspired you - maybe you got more out of it than mere money could have provided. You Tube is much more efficient for marketing and publicity to promote a new camera than any other traditional marketing tools. I am not going to buy a new camera just because I've seen an add in a newspaper or magazine like in the 90's. I want to hear someone, I trust, talk and use the camera. This is how I bought my XT-20, my Nikon D750 and my Nikon Z6 and most probably will choose my next camera too. Your time is valuable and I am sure that if you show this video at the grocery store, you will not be able to buy any food with that, not even one apple. Fuji did not pay you but they I am sure they paid the production team. You were the key part in this video, you are the storyteller and you were not paid. Unless you tell me you've seen an increase of views in your You Tube right after the video equating to an increase of revenue that is enough to pay for your time, I could say you got the best of it, if not, I am gong to say you did not get the best. Now that being said, not everything has to turn around money, I have done project for free in my life ending up getting 0$ for it but that was my choice and I was not helping a big corp getting a bigger part of the pie in a capitalist world.
Yp, that's been always the big question. I'm a reporter, paid with peanuts. But as such, you get to see beggars on one side and presidents and oligarchs on another, villas and sewerage and everything in between. And if you are really good, occasionally you get to dodge bullets, Neo style. But don't misunderstand me, that's the fun part 🤪
My thoughts…1) you knew in advance what the rules of engagement were…could you have asked for compensation? I feel you benefit as your brand was tagged in the promotion 2) sponsored videos - I think you should do them but be selective, if you don’t believe in the brand/product then don’t accept a sponsor for your channel. 3) I think you should feel proud that they asked you, you know your stuff, have a large following and you make amazing content and are fun to listen to/watch!
While I hate to see you not get a paycheck, we are here because of how you talk and how you work...and if the world spins in the way I would like, I could see you saying you'd give them the time to make their promotional piece BUT you get equal - or more - time to do your thing...that's the only way I can see you being happy with how it works out.
I wouldn’t give Fujifilm a lap dance for free 😂-Babe needs compensation-$$$ or Gear is what motivates me-That being said if you feel there was value in the experience; and don’t feel resentful or under compensated by Fujifilm-and are happy with the results then it’s all good man.
I think this dilemma also really comes down to 'do you need it'? I think many of your viewers know you have integrity and are a trustworthy person, if you would take a sponsorship from time to time because you need it (I don't care if that's to get a creative spark or because you could use some additional income because this is not an easy time), I think that is totally fine, as long as you feel good about presenting it to your audience. I would really like to buy a Fuji system, but the horrible firmware is chasing me away. I mean they having problems for months now. Everything is very expensive but doesn‘t work properly. I like the film simulations and the colors, but i need a working system. I think i’ll choose Nikon…
I see it simply: If you see the experience as something you may have spent compensation on, then it's alright maybe once. But knowing just how much they could give you, and just how much profit they've made from your content alone, I have to say you should be compensated a lot more so you can spend it on what you want, rather than an itenerary a corporation made for you.
I am sorry but you opened Pandora’s box. I am related to the luxury watch industry and this is the first step to any professionals NOT getting paid for your work. Like in my industry, you will be told that you are fortunate to be treated at all for dinner. If not, you will be replaced by some rich kid seeking attention by creating the material for free. Make sure you monetize without taking much of their help. Once they convince you that they are doing you a favor. you lost. I could go on and tell you where this is going but I think you get the idea…

I’m about as mercenary as one can be, having spent many years as a freelancer - every hour counted and if I wasn’t paid I didn’t do the work. However, I think all those here in the comments saying to never do any work without being paid directly are wrong. As you said, you were in something of a rut and wouldn’t have necessarily been doing something as productive and interesting with your time otherwise. I think that’s the key. If you had a mountain of paying work that would have created an opportunity cost, then you have to weigh the decision personally. There are other currencies than money, and the things you learned, the relationships you established, and the work you created all have value. No one should be condemning you for your decision.

Thank you for this making-of podcast! Concerning sponsoring I have thought about it the other way round: If I were a lead marketing person of a company, what could I expect from "bribing" a RUclipsr? If I was paying him or her too much, s/he would be biased, loose their authenticity which long-time followers would recognize and do damage to my brand and the RUclipsrs alike. Paying too low could backfire as lame and boring reviews or even harsh critics, and at the end both sides feel betrayed. That's why I think it's a clever compromise to give savvy and media-experienced persons the opportunity to "play" with my products, pay for the expenses along the way, and let them create something they own (incl. the rights to use it as they want to) and the way they like it to create. If my expenses (as a marketing guy) and the creator's efforts are balancing with the results on both sides, it's a win-win solution.

Upfront, I’m a hobbyist. I am also a lawyer and bill my hours. I personally don’t work for free and I think you shouldn’t either. Maybe you could have booked some other clients in those two days. That may sound harsh, but your time and effort are valuable. If your time and effort weren’t valuable, they wouldn’t ask you to make the videos. They know how big your channel is. They know you get views. You are a professional photographer and you’re worth it.

@@notthatproud7453 you're right, but it's a business model question. You see people doing all sort of things for free because they win more with the video they make about it than charging the client for it. The opportunity of filming something becomes the source of revenue.
And I don't mean anyone is right or wrong to pay or not to pay. And I don't think not getting paid gives more freedom because if the video doesn't suit fuji, paid or not, they could decide to not invite him anymore.
It ends about finding a deal both sides agree with.
He can also open a marketing company and get contract for making promotional videos but it's another job. He felt the difference between his way to work and the pro crew work.

It seems to me, the fundamental question is, what relationship with Fujifilm helps to build your brand. You're at 200K subscribers and there's no reason you shouldn't be targeting 1 million. Your brand is an essential element in achieving that goal.
Does being paid by Fujifilm for your time support your brand better than Fuji paying expenses and you volunteering your time?
You know your brand better than me so, I won't presume to answer the question. But I do think that's the essential question: which relationship with Fujifilm (any camera maker) is best aligned with your brand?

I’m a long time viewer of your channel and I’m so happy that Fujifilm are recognizing your dedication and devotion to the brand and gave you this amazing opportunity. However, I disagree with their idea of not compensating you. It’s the basic principle of your time having value (just like everyone else involved in the project) as a professional photographer AND RUclipsr/influencer. The value cannot and should not be zero. That is just wrong. I can understand it should not be an exorbitant amount which may influence your views, however it is easy to come to an agreement on a reasonable amount that wouldn’t be considered a “bribe” as another comment mentioned.
I think it says something wonderful about you, Omar that you are such a kind and giving person/artist. You are clearly inspired by the project and motivated to create and enjoyed the process. And if that is ok for you then I certainly don’t criticize you for doing it. At the same time, no matter how much I enjoy the work, I personally couldn’t stomach doing it for free out of principle.

I enjoyed this longer format. It was interesting to peek behind the scenes. Omar, you are a large part of the reason I decided on a Fujifilm XT-2 back in the day (had been a Nikon gal until then). Since I am not a pro, I am still using that same XT-2 and still loving it.
That guy did not write X-T2, the previous guy did not write X-T50. Is it difficult? I have seen same trouble so many places.
Branding is my profession, and photography plays a very important role in it. But it's photography driven by a vision to create through creativity and originality. Fujifilm is worth over $26 Billion. I'm guessing your net worth is less. They can afford to pay you. And they should. They should also have the guts to allow sponsored artists/photographers to review their products candidly and honestly. I think all companies should do this if they have any integrity. Even if they had paid you in this instance, having watched so many of your videos, your reactions and your enthusiasm are always sincere. And the information and insights you offer are valuable. After starting out on a basic Canon Rebel, I researched cameras for a pretty long time before deciding to switch to Fujifilm. Watching your videos was super helpful and part of the reason I ended up with Fujifilm. I'd say they owe you.

It was almost an unconscious thing on my end, but like a lightbulb going off, I realized one of the things I really like and enjoy about your channel, is the fact that you don't interrupt your videos to tell us all in painful detail, how great Squarespace (or some other product) is. - beyond your very balanced opinions on camera gear that your audience has come to respect and rely on. I understand what you're saying, but creators have to have a way to make money especially when you consider that RUclips's ads don't cover everything. Sponsorships go a long way in allowing creators to providing more content rather than being an Uber driver on the side.
In France we have a saying : "All work deserves wages". By the way the format they have chosen is cool and you can stay honest and inspire people.
Your old youtube videos from 5 years ago, help me a lot to understand the beauty of the photography creation process, and I am happy to have boughten a Fuji XT 30 to play with the film simulation, without having to work in post process too much.
I don't see anything wrong with sponsoring an author who freely expresses his opinion. If the author openly works for the company, this is also possible, but there is less trust. I’m from a marketing and brand management background. In terms of brand equity, don’t worry, you got a good deal - so did Fujifilm, but that was the whole point of the project.

Honestly, I got over my GAS problem years ago! I pretty much never buy anything based on a YT video. I'll go into a shop and get my hands on a camera and see how it feels, or buy it and try it, returning it if I'm not happy with it. The value of these promo videos is simply to see what features a camera has, rather than reach a buying decision.

I would absolutely trust you even if it was a sponsored video. I bought a Fuji camera over 5 maybe 6 pls years ago because of you. I don't watch all the RUclips videos I subscribe to all the time due to real life getting busy, elderly parents, just life in general. I think you should have been compensated for your time, effort, energy that you put into this project. I also think that it was a nice thing for you to get to experience. You met another artist, worked with different people when you mostly work alone and possibly it jumpstarted your creativity again. And I just have to say that you are the sweetest. I have been around since your channel was small and haven't watched in a while but I was very happy to see that it has grown over the years and you deserve it!!

I think the photography RUclips community seems to be going a similar route that the tech reviewers have been dealing with years. It seems to be a very fine balance between sponsorship and bias - and also appropriate compensation you do to promote the products directly or indirectly. I think you struck a very fine balance and it seems the brands trust you, but at the same time your audience too. I discovered your channel thanks to one of your X-T3 setup videos, but stayed for more because you provide long term use of the products you showcase and also provide gripes with the products as well so we know what to expect. A lot of other channels just provide the spec sheet and their shooting experience from the press event and then radio silence about that product afterwards.
I think in this instance, since I have been watching you for ages and know kind of where you stand, I think it's fine. You have mentioned over and over again that you like all cameras so I'm already going in expecting that. I say if you had a good time and it was beneficial for you, whether creatively, financially etc, Id say it was time well spent. Thanks for the video Omar. Super interesting to listen to and watch. Great chat, Omar. I worked with friends on a 48 hour film project and was having flashbacks of all the prep to get two minutes of usable footage here, thirty seconds there … fun, but for a first-timer it was eye opening! As for credibility, disclosure up front is key for me. And then you judge by the evidence. Show me, don’t tell me. So seeing someone take the pictures, cull, edit the files, present finished results has 100% use value, versus on the other extreme someone blabbing and adjective bombing. It doesn’t have to be dry, have humor, personality, but always show the goods. So the personality gives me a read on trustworthy versus snake oil, and then the evidence lets me judge. And you get top marks! Lol
The fact that you are even asking about if we would trust you if sponsored, says everything to me. I continue to watch you if you are sponsored or not.

I think the sponsorship, paid thing is closely tied to the "relationship", your viewer, "me" has developed watching your videos over a significant amount of time, and whether you have convinced me of your integrity. In your case you have convinced me of your unbiased evaluation of gear and your desire to not only evaluate but to teach and instruct how to become a better photographer. Great podcast. As a RUclips viewer on your channel I listen because I enjoy hearing your opinion on both the pros and cons of different cameras and shooting styles. I understand your dilemma regarding payment. Being truthful is always the best policy. Every camera has it drawbacks and also shines in a variety of ways.
The consumer has to decide which camera delivers what they want for their style of photographing. Being paid to promote a new camera takes integrity and I think you have that. That's one of the reasons I follow you. You did seem to have a great time and met some new folks along the way. I think not getting paid frees you up to address issues that may not be so favorable. You are doing a great job all around. I want to try a Fujifilm camera, just hunting for the right one for me. Don't beat yourself up about getting rewards; your honest character is reward enough.
I love your channel and you seem trustworthy to me. I don’t think this would change, if you did a few sponsored videos. I definitely prefer videos about photowalks, motorbiketrips and so on. As long as we don’t lose those and as long your channel doesn’t become to one of those „best camera ever made review“-channels we see constantly on YT, I wouldn’t be mad.

You nailed it Omar, just be open about the intent of the video. I would expect you to say how well something worked or if it doesn't work, why. Plus, I recall you taking a trip on Sony's dime before to see their new gear, etc (I could be wrong, but don't think so), so it's cool. You have to feed the fam and let's face it the videos are entertainment, it's why we all keep coming back.

I prefer unsponsored videos for reviews with full disclosure. Even sponsored videos are okay with full disclosure but I am aware of the bias. I think Fujifilm came out ahead financially and you came out ahead with the experience. 😊

I think you have made the right decision on the ancient big dilemma, because in your case this is how you can maintain the balance... Unfortunately, here in Europe, in the last 20 years, not only large companies but also private customers are slowly starting to want everything for free... They always say that it should be an honor for us, I mean for us for artists... I think the solution would be to talk about it as much as possible, definitely hard but creatively and openly, so that the message is received on the other side as well... Maybe this way things can slowly change and improve

Although I found you through Fujifilm, I enjoy your videos because of you. I know you use Nikon professionally. I couldn’t care less what brand you use and who sponsors you. As long as you have fun videos, I am going to keep watching you. If you can get paid, go for it. Just don’t take time out the video to speak about “today’s sponsor”. I am already watching minutes of ads forced on me by RUclips , the last thing I need is to hear youtubers ramble about sponsors.

Fuji definitely got the better end of the deal. They not only got two days of work from two different photographers completely for free, but they also got something more important: street cred for the new cameras. For free. You guys were used, no doubt about it.
I see that for sure, but I'm also able to put "Camera launch" "part of a full production" on the resumé. I'll take it.
I dont see it that way. Omar got some serious recognition as premium content producers and an incredible experience. This could open doors to other professional opportunities down the road and im sure he learned a ton as well not to mention his direct connections with corporate Fuji.

As you can find in the comments, I think occasional sponsorship or paid contents are fine as long as fully disclosed. There's any way some bias no matter what. We just get to know the youtuber over time and understand the bias as well, whether that's coming from being a fanboy or being paid. Being a brand ambassador is a whole lot different though. Anyway, this gig would be something I would definitely do as well if I had skills like yours. I'm glad you had fun!

Hi Omar. This is a great video. It is really interesting to hear and see how these things are made and also to get a handle on at least a little bit of the financial angle. At one point in your video you referred to any financial renumeration you might have received as 'passive income'. Omar, there was nothing 'passive' about your input to the final piece of work. So, personally, I think you deserve to receive proper financial reward for your input.
I have watched your channel for years and I remember back in the day when Fujifilm didn’t send you anything, didn’t invite you anywhere, you used black tape a lot (😂) etc and you continued to use Fuji because you loved them. If memory serves correct I think you made a joke about the situation in one or two videos back then.
The reason I say this is because you work hard and have been very passionate about the Fuji system for years and highlighted both good and not so good stuff, so a little recognition from them is great in my book. You didn’t do it for the payoff it recognition and they realised you deserved some thanks so that’s awesome - and they continue to benefit from your videos both new and old.
Regarding sponsorships I think like any group of people RUclips has good and not so good creators. You are one of the good ones and realise that if you said something was amazing, a load of followers went out and bought it and consequently found out it was rubbish you would do harm to your channel. More than that though, I don’t know you personally but from the years I’ve watched you, you’ve always seemed genuine and caring, both in video work and when you were shooting bar mitzvah type stuff and you really wanted the best for the subjects.
So for you, get sponsors, get paid for your hard work, and while it may annoy some the core of your audience will be happy for you.

Let me tell you my story, I was in the market for my first camera and I had watched so many videos and I was able to glean that for my type of photography it was between Fuji xt5 or Nikon zf. As someone who had no idea about cameras or photography apart from rule of thirds lol. I definitely didn’t take any review as concrete reasoning behind my final decision.
I guess what I am trying to say is that people have access to a ton of information that help them make the smart decision in the end. I don’t believe they rely solely on one channel or one review and can often see through by the BS. I must say I have throughly enjoyed your content and your practical take on reviewing.
So I 100% for you to take up on sponsorship and monetise your channel that way.
How far into your future that sponsorship goes is something you will have to decide and negotiate and ultimately what you want from the channel and what you want to give the audience. I don’t think doing partnership is that big of a deal tbh.

Your question: yes, I trust you and your opinions. Being sponsored would not affect that trust, but . . . if you had been sponsored would you have had to keep saying, "my honest opinion" etc . . .?
Just because reviewer likes or dislikes a feature doesn't mean the viewers has to agree or even be interested in that feature. No matter how much the company is paying you to hype it ;)
I think the majority of viewers just wants to know what's new. And if you helped selling a few units, why should you work for free for that company.
Tough call, Omar. Just like the photographer who should never do free shoots for experience or exposure - everyone’s time is valuable. You have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this channel and content - and have been very consistent with creation and cadence - and I am sure at times when you were less inspired or in a rut. I think at some point if YT itself is no longer providing an income - you and only you will need to decide on how sponsorships/sponsored videos should be for you. Hard decision - I know you will make the right one for you, your reputation/credibility and your family. (BTW - yep, you have sold a lot of Fuji cameras! At least to ‘me’ over the past 7 years!)
I think there's a fine line that has to be walked with regard to sponsorships, etc. I like seeing those kinds of "promotional" videos from some creators, particularly being able to see the final results of what they are able to achieve with the gear they are promoting. If I see a video or photo that I like, then I know that's possible with that camera. That kind of promotional work is valuable to a company and I think you should be compensated. On the flip side, if I want the straight up truth about a system, all of its limitations or things that just plain suck about it, then no, I would not trust a sponsored video. I'm not talking about you specifically, I just mean anyone. There are a few reviewers on RUclips that I trust a great deal for the hard truth about cameras, lenses and other gear. But that's a different type of content than "promotion". I think it all comes down to being open with your audience, recognizing that there are different kinds of content, and having a hard code of ethics for whatever kind of content you do.
As far as what constitutes adequate compensation for you with certain types of content, I think that's up to you or other individual creators. Sometimes, the exposure from a national/global launch like this can bring more people to your own channel. But if you don't need that exposure, and you have your own thriving business that requires your attention, then it's fair for you to get some sort of remuneration whether it's cash or even a free camera or two. I think Fujifilm and other companies would more than get their money's worth by compensating someone like you with a good-sized audience. Marketing on this level isn't cheap, and they can save $$ by doling out free gear since their cost on that gear is nowhere near what they'd pay if they had to stroke you a check. The most important thing is to disclose all compensation including every freebie, whether it's a free camera, free trip, free dinner, or whatever. If a creator doesn't disclose that and then I find out later, then they will have lost my trust. Even if it's not technically a "sponsored" video, but the company lets a creator keep a piece of gear, that should absolutely be disclosed since that can create bias on the creator's part. First, because they feel obligated to say good stuff for the free gear, and second, because the creator might hope for future opportunities to get free gear.
There's nothing wrong with being compensated for your time, effort and expertise. It all comes down to how honest you are with your audience. Some people might not like creators making big money or getting free stuff, but I think they are the minority. Most people understand that you have to make a living and will not hold it against you provided that you are not deceptive about the process.

On being paid i'd normally say 'you should be' but given you were in a bit of a rut - and this seems to have inspired you - maybe you got more out of it than mere money could have provided. You Tube is much more efficient for marketing and publicity to promote a new camera than any other traditional marketing tools. I am not going to buy a new camera just because I've seen an add in a newspaper or magazine like in the 90's. I want to hear someone, I trust, talk and use the camera. This is how I bought my XT-20, my Nikon D750 and my Nikon Z6 and most probably will choose my next camera too. Your time is valuable and I am sure that if you show this video at the grocery store, you will not be able to buy any food with that, not even one apple. Fuji did not pay you but they I am sure they paid the production team. You were the key part in this video, you are the storyteller and you were not paid. Unless you tell me you've seen an increase of views in your You Tube right after the video equating to an increase of revenue that is enough to pay for your time, I could say you got the best of it, if not, I am gong to say you did not get the best. Now that being said, not everything has to turn around money, I have done project for free in my life ending up getting 0$ for it but that was my choice and I was not helping a big corp getting a bigger part of the pie in a capitalist world.
Yp, that's been always the big question. I'm a reporter, paid with peanuts. But as such, you get to see beggars on one side and presidents and oligarchs on another, villas and sewerage and everything in between. And if you are really good, occasionally you get to dodge bullets, Neo style. But don't misunderstand me, that's the fun part 🤪
My thoughts…1) you knew in advance what the rules of engagement were…could you have asked for compensation? I feel you benefit as your brand was tagged in the promotion 2) sponsored videos - I think you should do them but be selective, if you don’t believe in the brand/product then don’t accept a sponsor for your channel. 3) I think you should feel proud that they asked you, you know your stuff, have a large following and you make amazing content and are fun to listen to/watch!

Definitively sponsored, but also very inspiring! A good product should sell itself, but it's a bit naive these days to not be commercial.
While I hate to see you not get a paycheck, we are here because of how you talk and how you work...and if the world spins in the way I would like, I could see you saying you'd give them the time to make their promotional piece BUT you get equal - or more - time to do your thing...that's the only way I can see you being happy with how it works out.
I wouldn’t give Fujifilm a lap dance for free 😂-Babe needs compensation-$$$ or Gear is what motivates me-That being said if you feel there was value in the experience; and don’t feel resentful or under compensated by Fujifilm-and are happy with the results then it’s all good man.

I think this dilemma also really comes down to 'do you need it'? I think many of your viewers know you have integrity and are a trustworthy person, if you would take a sponsorship from time to time because you need it (I don't care if that's to get a creative spark or because you could use some additional income because this is not an easy time), I think that is totally fine, as long as you feel good about presenting it to your audience. I loved what you did during the Fuji launch and wouldn't have cared one bit if you got paid for it, I even feel like you should have been paid for it!
There's a satisfaction in creating whether money is involved or not. That said, I bought a X-T20 from B&H after watching your videos. They got paid.

I would really like to buy a Fuji system, but the horrible firmware is chasing me away. I mean they having problems for months now. Everything is very expensive but doesn‘t work properly. I like the film simulations and the colors, but i need a working system. I think i’ll choose Nikon…

If you see the experience as something you may have spent compensation on, then it's alright maybe once.
But knowing just how much they could give you, and just how much profit they've made from your content alone, I have to say you should be compensated a lot more so you can spend it on what you want, rather than an itenerary a corporation made for you.

I am sorry but you opened Pandora’s box. I am related to the luxury watch industry and this is the first step to any professionals NOT getting paid for your work. Like in my industry, you will be told that you are fortunate to be treated at all for dinner. If not, you will be replaced by some rich kid seeking attention by creating the material for free. Make sure you monetize without taking much of their help. Once they convince you that they are doing you a favor. you lost. I could go on and tell you where this is going but I think you get the idea…
