Let's build an expandable chicken and egg farm in Valheim: build guide

  • This farm is not very expensive and fairly easy to build. You need a bit of iron and a bit of stone, bot mostly just wood. The best part - it is really simple to expand to the sides if you need more. Technically, you can't buy eggs until you've fought Yagluth, but maybe you're luckier than others and just... find them?

Hello, thanks for the video :) I did everything exactly according to the guide, the chickens grew up, stood in the right place, I threw food at them, they ate once, laid a few eggs and didn’t eat anymore. Kida moved them from place to place in different ways, but nothing helped. After I destroyed the roof under them and they fell through with their food, they finally ate. I guess they didn't have enough space.
Update: Just try to build again if something doesn't work. If the chickens sat on top of each other, place a wooden gate behind the wall and open it - the door will move the top chicken down to the right place, as of 01/08/2024 this build works perfectly :)

An absolute banger of a farm! Happy to have implemented this to my own base.
One modification I did though: for the hatchery side I also added the egg collector so I could change the output by turning the 45 degree roof tile. I ended up lacking eggs while swimming in chicken breast so the adjustability was a nice addition. I'll just scale this 3:1 later on when I remake a base but still, something you can do to balance the output if need be :)

Very solid design that has both function and a little bit of form. I used the Carved Darkwood Dividers for window pieces instead of the iron cage pieces to save on iron, and I think the build looks pretty good. Oddly enough, I had one of each of my Chickens from each chute disappear the first attempt. Can't for the life of me figure out why, but thankfully the second attempt went fine. Thanks for the video!
Update: After expanding by 2 (needed more eggs for omelettes) I've learned that the place where you hatch the first 2 eggs is slightly too small. Maybe there was an update to their hitbox size. One chicken got pushed out of the chute and is now walking around the top of where the eggs sit at the bottom to be collected. Another one I watched take damage from the fire. So both times I lost 1 of the 2 chickens in the chute. If you wait until 1 is fully grown into a hen then put the other egg in after, the second chicken should grow fine. Takes longer, but safer if you don't have enough money to go buy more eggs.

@@inecronomicsi4285 The iron in the middle of the tower is needed for the fire to stand on something while you hatch the eggs, while also adding some stability to the tower. You can't place a campfire on wood floor, but with a tiny bit of iron you cheese past that issue.
Hildir's fire pit, on the other hand, can be placed on wood floor without an issue. It also burns longer.
The only downside with using this firepit instead of having a campfire up there is that you actually have to find Hildir before you can make the breeder. Only once have I found Hildir before I've found eggs, and funnily enough it's in the recorded let's play on this channel 😆

    • @splashopain
      @splashopain  6 месяцев назад +2

There is a limited space for eggs, so if you have your eggs close by the hens, the hens won't lay more eggs when the space is full. If you pick them up straight away the hens can lay more eggs, of course, but then you'll have to be there to pick up eggs quite regularly. If there are no eggs around the hens, however, they lay new eggs more often. That is the only reason for the tower really 😃

I tried building this tower for the first time and I think it's not quite tall enough. You build the iron support 6 high (12m). The chickens need to be more than 10m away from the eggs to keep laying. Seems fine so far. But in the design the chickens end up being about 1m below the top of the iron support. Then the collection area for the cold eggs is 1m above the ground. Now we are right at 10m seperation between the chickens and the eggs. What I found was I would quickly get 2-4 eggs, then didn't seem to get anymore in the cold collection area. I lowered the collection platform to ground level so now it's a solid 11m from the chickens and am getting many more eggs.

Similarly if you get too many Hens in the hatchery area and they start to stack a 2nd layer on top of each other it completely stops all breeding as well. If I feel like rebuilding I'll definitely make it 7 iron grates tall. That should make it a lot less finicky.

UPDATE: It is Jan 2023 as of this writing. This chicken farm, as built, does NOT keep bats out of the TOP during a "You Stirred The Cauldron" Raid on your base. I confirmed this by running TO the farm and standing inside the very moment the raid started. I lost three of the four chickens. I have no idea HOW the Bats get in. They just appear inside. It looks like they're "glitching" in, which is weird in itself. But this farm, as designed has now cost me many thousands in Gold re-buying Eggs over and over just trying to get it up and running to begin with. EDIT: As well, the chicks sometimes glitch through the lower upright wall and into the fire as soon as they hatch. This is driving me nuts.

As a fix to the bat problem I'm thinking about simply doubling the wall around the top part. Essentially building a room inside a room so the bats can't get to the inner room. ...unless they're coming in the triangle at the top of the X at the peak on both sides.

@@NorthernChev Hi! Thanks for telling me! It worked fine when I summoned a raid just after it all was built, but I think you're right about where they could get in. One could put up doors to the small spaces where the hens are, perhaps? Never experienced that glitch through the wall and into the fire that you described, and that must have been very frustrating!

@@splashopain So, last night I think I've solved the problem. The Hens, as designed, have the tendency to clip through the walls, so the bats can hit them. I took your exact build and then just built an additional room around the top part with a space between the walls wide enough to walk around. Basically a box inside a box. And, instead of Xs at the peaks, I switched them to Wood Wall 45s and integrated them into the two roofs. this seems to have solved the problem. As well, instead of putting the campfire (at the top) on the divider wall near the eggs I added an additional temporary divider wall underneath and put the campfire on the floor that you were sitting on farther back instead of up close. That solved the hatching and glitching into the fire problem. Hope that helps.

As soon as I see a builder require a ton of iron for structural on a “simple” build, I instantly “swipe LEFT”…

I see what you're saying - it usually isn't an easy build when you need iron 🤣

Troll cave is the best. Problem solved. Fire with signs protecting lil chickens from the fire. Plus u can build around the cave

Yeah, troll caves are great, the only problem is that you can only fit so many chicks in there before the hens stop breeding 😅
