    The highly technical items like "squashing stuff out sideways" is why I love this channel lol

    Walt, this was a little more of what I was talking about. Seeing you in the forge and beating steel into the desired shape. Thanks.

    can you make a video about the benefits and disadvantages of hydraulic presses/ power hammers/ rollung mills (If that is the correct term)?

    When it comes to ladder patterns, has anyone ever tried random directional and depths of the grooves?

    I thought for ladder pattern you actually have to cut into the layers, how does pressing into it make the ladder pattern, or do you then grind it down?

    Hi Walter, I was wondering if you would do a tutorial for making a european longsword or saber? Great video and thanks for all your help.

    Just starting again, but I was a toolmaker before I became an engineer. I have my Uncles used 1882 cast iron coal forge.
    I plan on making my power hammer and my press. Which one do you think is better?
    I am going to try and make my forge/machine/wood working shop all run by an overhead belt. Not sure about the power system yet. have an old 42hp Wisconsin engine, or a steam engine. going to be fun.

    just saw the forged in fire episode, too bad you did not get to make the naginata in your home forge.

    Do the die pieces have to be hardened or can they just made of mild steel?

    I have a silly question, I have seen other smiths use power hammers to draw out the billets. why do you use a press instead, what makes it your preference? many thanks

      A press can be a lot more powerful and it doesn't disturb every neighbor within a mile radius.

    What is the minimum size (tonnage) press suitable for forging?

    • @leviblackwood3258
      @leviblackwood3258 7 лет назад +1

      TrollForge depends on what your forging and the size of it.

      TrollForge I've heard 20 tons...however I neither own one nor have I used one. Perhaps 1 day sooner than later

    Walter, I watch Forged in Fire but have not seen "your" episode. Can you give us the specific episode and series - would love to watch it.

    Hi Walter. How much of a factor is the press weight, or hammer weight for a power hammer? Say I want to make cutlery, or even Damascus swords. Is there a minimum size of hammer or forge press?

    • @Xiras1985
      @Xiras1985 7 лет назад

      Just build my own press and 30 tons work pretty well. Anything far below, meh ... for hammers, I worked with 120kg and it was pretty awesome too.

      Question How many HP is the motor running the Hydraulic pump? what size are your Cylinder/s to get 30T ? I am in the process of getting a the parts I need. I have done some calculaitons but before I spend any more money I wanted to make sure I have done the math right.

    Hey Walter. How does the ladder pattern work on the press? Do you put the fullers in and then grind down the humps until it's flat again? I just got my press built a month ago or so and started making damascus and I'm excited to give it a try. Thanks!
