One thing I've heard, you don't seem to have a problem with, is some log splitters have the ram so close to the beam it makes the dyes go off square and level under pressure, the ideal place for the ram is the center of the dyes, on my log splitter forge press, it's to close and I need to put a space between the beam and the cylinder.

Sound deadening pieces can be helpful to stop some of the whining. The archeological discovery of sound mat growing naturally under rental car carpets may or may not be a hoax. Very tidy shop, it's all about perspective. Cool project.

That was just a temporary location. It's just the camera angle, it's more than a foot below and to the side of the florescent lights and nothing dangerous about it at all.

This might be a stupid question, but why not just use the gas motor that it came with instead of replacing it with a electric motor? It is a functionality reason or gas fumes indoor thing? Just curious. Pretty cool by the way.

You probably could but it would have to be fairly large and possibly have some vents on it so the motor and pump didn't overheat. The best thing would be to get some longer hydraulic hose and put the motor and pump outside or in another room. The noise bothered me at first but not so much now. It's more of an annoyance when I'm shooting videos than anything.
Why do you guys buy log spliters for these presses? Just but a cylinder, valve and pump. choose a short throw Cyl. 8 inch 10 Inch Needs less fluid/smaller tank. Build long thin vertical tank for cooling. There are surplus houses the sell pumps, rams, and valves. Take the 'I' beam, split it down the length, and put half on each side. No flex.
I am trying to figure a design for a press now. I do not think I want to use a log splitter I think I will be Money ahead to buy what I want then try to make do with something else. But I am considering a Making it gas power and mounting the engine and pump outside under a shed so I don't have the noise in my ear. If you had it all to do over would you have used a log splitter?
Alot of work to mill that shaft down, could have just wired the motor, turned it on and ran a file over the shaft without tearing the motor apart to put it in the lathe, it is it's own lathe 🤔

nice build Shane,, i want to build a 30 ton log splitter forge press and have seen many here on youtube but i never get a clear answer on the electric motor conversion,, most people are swapping out the 6.5 hp gas engines for 3hp single phase electric motors, but not nesseccarily stipulating what rpm the motor has? just wanted to ask about the Rpms of the motor you used,, does the lower rpm slow down the ram speed?? there are 2 variations available on ebay that i have seen,, one is a 3hp 3000rpm and the other is a 3hp 1700rpm,, what would you suggest??
I've seen presses built from log splitters, what I wonder is how much more economical is it to make one out of the splitter compared to piecing it all together?
I think ya could probably build it cheaper piecing it all together if ya used recycled steel and new hydraulics. If ya can find a used splitter that would probably be the cheapest way to go. I just used a new one cause my wife works at tractor supply and with her discount and the black Friday special we got it pretty cheap.
Thank you for posting this great video, for the past 3 months I have been considering doing the same exact build. I have been holding off because I have been weighing the pros and cons of building from scratch /scrap and sourcing hydraulic components vs modifing a log splitter. If I go with a log splitter I was considering the new 30 ton from TSC. It has little faster cycle time and I was going with a 7.5hp 1ph motor. Question to you. Would you do it again or build from scratch, what's your thoughts? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks Kyle
Thanks Kyle. So far, the press is working great and I am very happy with it. It was quick and easy to do, and I wouldn't hesitate recommending going that route at all. That being said, I still plan on making one from scratch someday. I love doing that type of stuff and this way I could build it to my own design, but it will have to wait until I make a power hammer first.
I haven't seen anything on it either, but I really haven't looked. I just fabricated a bracket so both shafts lined up straight, the lovejoy coupler mated correctly, and everything stayed in place after it was all tightened up.
Hey phooesnax, I'm still hanging in there. Thanks for asking. Had some life changes but things are settling down. Probably wont have any new videos for a while but I am planning on making more.
I'm pretty happy with it. I think the only thing I would change is to make the die holder so it takes square die blocks. That way I could slide in some drawing blocks and if I needed to, take it out and turn it 90 degrees and draw out the steel in the other direction (length then width). It's an easy fix that I need to do. I would also like to get longer hydraulic hoses so I can put the motor and pump in the back room so it's not so loud.
Wouldn't a shorter ram have been sufficient? Converting a new log splitter seems an expensive way of getting a ram and a pump. I'm not criticising your good effort, just trying to save money!

Could you build an insulated box around the motor and pump ,some good acoustic insulation might make the whole thing a bit more user friendly.

Take the momentary button out and replace it with a toggle. That will let you run it with your foot only I believe.

You may be able to but I would think you also need to keep a little air flow going across it to help cool it.
Love the content. Please smooth out the camera motion and avoid rotating the camera when looking up or down. I get motion sick.

that pump is a two stage pump. The ram will slow down when you start pushing hard
Yes sir .... I stated in the video a couple times that it's a two stage pump. You can see it kick in when I squeeze the metal at the end of the video.

I think if you isolate the pump and used semi-hard rubber mounts it would be quitter.

Can’t you improvise a pulley system to where it increases the speed even more? Large pulley on the motor small pulley on the log splitter?

How big of a chunk of steel do you think you can forge with a 188 ton hydraulic press?
Not taking the noise and fumes into consideration. Could you use the gas engine? Is there a performance difference?
The gas engine that came with would work fine and make the build a lot easier.
Might the motor be wired to the direction control so it is on only when called on?

It's a homemade Frankenstein that I built from several different machines. There is a video of it in my channel.
