- I had a lot of fun building this and it only took me a few hours to build and assemble.
Super versatile and it does pattern welded steel aka Damascus!!!
I have put it through its paces numerous times and it keeps surprising me every time. This project is perfect for smiths or hobbiests out there that want to cut their hammering time down because of either pain or to up production and to cut down on time.

This is just what I needed - brings a press to my hobbyist budget as a real possibility and allows for forge welding. What I can't do I can ship out to local welders and machinist. Great video.

Thanx man. Just remember the smaller the surface area of your dies the more effective they are. Also movment at your dies and the rams HAVE to be minimal or zero or it squishes your billets all wonky

Awesome. My latest 96 layer skinning knife is also on my channel and it was made with the splitter press. Im working on a almost 200 layer billet too

And this is why this would work insanely well. I would make the dies a bit narrower but other than that it does great
CG Smithing I have a metal shop so dies won't be a problem. I see a set of round dies for (extruding?) sorry, brain damage. Lol got to laugh at it.
@@tntchitwood a set of flat. But narrow dies. 4t is nit enough for wide flat dies. The narrower the better. And then a set of round dies for drawing out steel

Outstanding on the minimal deflection, I did a 6 tonner and just bypassed the switch completely and bought a safety pedal from amazon. I didn't want to put as much work into it as you did. But outstanding.

Great stuff... I just spent most of my weekend hammering on steel and was 'rewarded' with a damascus billet smaller than the one you had. I started looking at tire power hammers and then found this... THIS is the ticket. Going to do it. Thanks much! I'm looking at it trying to see if there is a way to reinforce the bar that moves a bit and I will never need it as a log splitter so will secure the stationary part so it doesnt come up either.

7 ton boss is a splitter that doesn't require you to use two handed operation. So their is no need to move the switch.

Here's the splitter in question. It's on sale until June 21 for $250. It has a 1.75 HP motor
Princess Auto also sells this 6 ton splitter made by Blue Max. Ther are no reviews for it on the PA website but Blue Max does manufacture a fair variety of splitters. At $300 it's a much better deal than the others (provided it's at least equivalent quality) but this may be a special price. It has a cycle time about twice as long as the other two splitters so you might want to have a shim system with your die holders so you can narrow the space between ram and anvil.
I forgot to mention that the motor is 2 HP.
And PA has a 9 ton electric splitter. Again the motor is 1.75 HP but the cycle speed is 24 sec. (twice as long as the others) It's $400 though.

so im planning on making a video on diff die sets for the press and experiment on what i can use or what would work well
and im using normal mild steel for now
You should have wired a footpedal in for your main switch. It would have been the most simple thing you could have ever done
Easier than moving a button? Not likely. Foot pedals are only useful on big presses because of the heavier chunks of metal being pressed by them. My billets are small and light i dont need the extra hand at all
Awesome build. Seriously considering copying this one. I’ve heard of people having issues with the ram getting stuck and not returning right,have you experienced anything like that? Also how Long have you had this thing working? Courious to see how Long it holds up. Thanks for the video and inspiration
Still have it since the very first vid i did on it and still going strong. I dont/cant over push the ram at all or my breaker trips lol so i cant really miss use the thing. So still goin strong
CG Smithing that’s good to hear it’s still going strong. Finished my build Yesterday from a 6,5 ton log splitter Seems to work fine haven’t tried it out on hot steel yet tho. But i Think it’s gonna work beautyfully. My only concern with it is how Long it Will hold up. Guess we’ll see. Thanks again for the inspiration

Not to bad ,my most recent press was a brand new 7 ton gas unit and well it’s now a 20 tone cause I changed the pump
im working on a 40-50t press....shhhhh dont tell anyone

Here's their 5 ton splitter. It has the same size motor (1.75 HP). There's a thicker frame but I expect the extra ton of force is in the hydaulics. Someone who actually knows hydraulics help me out. It's $400. I think the 4 ton is better value with the sale price otherwise it's only $50 to get 20% more force at regular price. Note that this price is getting around that for a 20 ton Princess Auto standing hydraulic press. (although the compressor is extra and much noisier)

Yes. Only big issue i had is the pipe moving when i squeeze a billet and my crappy welding breaking on the die holders. It must have zero movement when you squeeze a billet otherwise the billets come out all wonky

How does it work with cable? My wrists are a mess and want to make small billets of Damascus and cable Damascus

Hi is it possible to change switch to a click on type to power up motor and make a foot pedal to move ram leaving both hands free ( I am aware of the risk of getting hands nipped?)
anything is possible if you put your mind to it buddy
Do you have to cut it shorter or can you leave it longer to shorter the travel distance or does it have to travel that distance?
All depends on how much travel you want. Longer travel as you know will take longer right and you dont want your steel to cool down its all about speed and efficiency...well as much as a little splitter can give ya lol
You want to aim for around 5 to 6 inch gap inbetween your dies
@@CGSmithing wasnt sure if it had to travel a certain distance or if you had control of distance never used a log spiltternin my life I'm old school viking lol always used a axe for wood and hammer on metal forgeing but getting old lol arm surgery in 4 places
Some log splitters are vertical
yup and they have built in safety systems like arms to hold the log in place
hey i dont know if youll see my comment but i tried modifying my logsplitter to work like a press it worked great for two weeks eventually it busted and now it wont start i got all new wires and a new circuit breaker but ro no avail can you help me
does it not turn on anymore? is the motor fried? is the ram bent what brand is it?

ey rob ive built myself that 43 ton press and the poor little 4 ton is just hanging out outside now hahaha...will look into building a foot pedal for my 40 ton though
What brand is this splitter
honestly its the generic brand that princess auto sold a few years ago...today they have a little better of a unit that they sell
Only thing I can see as a safety hazard is the exposed plastic wire and power cord too close to the work area. One of those hot billets touching those wires one too many times would not be good. Try wrapping the wires and power cord with muffler exhaust tape or install them in a metal conduit.
Never had issues with that till i gave it away. You are ofcourse 1000% correct though. It was given to a neighbour and hes using it as a wood splitter again hahaha
