  • An update on the forging press I made from a hydraulic log splitter.
    In this video I answer some of the questions that have been asked about the press and what I would do differently if I made another one.
    Hydraulic Pump Lovejoy Couplings to replace the cheap original coupling can be found here:

    and the pump mounting bracket here:

    Guys, I swear my memory gets worse every day. My wife reminded me after I shot the video that I made this 6 months ago, not a year ago. Either way, here's an update on the press.

    Off topic but I love your collection of Coleman Lanterns! I got my first one from my grandfather in the early 80’s.

    Thanks for the quick reply and the link to this new video. A lot of great ideas I will keep in mind as I do construction. As far as that coupler goes I went with three phase 5 horse motor and vfd. So I needed a Lovejoy 1/2 inch for the pump and inch and an eighth for the motor. I just did that search on eBay and got one shipped for less than $30. That one also comes with the rubber spider in there.
    Thanks again for the great video.

      Sounds like your going to have a nice setup when you all done. I think upgrading that coupling with be one of the first things I do to the press. Would be nice to have the larger faster motor back on it.

    Looks great and still functions than that’s the ticket,sold mine a month ago so I built a power hammer
    I have an upgrade I need to make and I’ll have a video of it as a peer hammer build
    Thanks for the update

    love the press, i have slowly started to gather the parts for one, a customer abandoned one at my shop because the gas motor was shot and the hoses leaked so its a good start for it, the ram is still fine

    ..a month, six months, a year No Worries. It's still a Good build Shane! I'm thinking about a small press with a air over hydraulic jack and springs, about 6" of travel is all i need. I guess i'll send a grand-yungun to engineering school so they can figure it out for me...!!

    • @SWPhotography
      @SWPhotography  6 лет назад +1

      lol ... Thanks James.
      An air over jack would work, there's a few videos here on youtube with them, but the biggest hurdle is the speed, but they do work.

    Hi Shane , enjoyed watching your video as usual. Now, if you watch your video near the 9:15 or so, you may have to back up a little and watch it a couple of times But, from my perspective viewing there seems to be stray electrical voltage coming from the gray power switch, next to the yellow dust pan.and moving to the left as you view. I showed it to the wife and asked her to watch and she sees it too. It does it several times. Take care......Ken & Marta :-) .

    • @SWPhotography
      @SWPhotography  6 лет назад

      Good eye Ken and ya had me scared there for a sec. That's a 3 phase power box and the 3 phase power is off so there shouldn't be any power in it.
      I opened the video in my editing software and zoomed in on that spot at 400 percent and played it frame by frame. What it is is lights from the cars driving by. You'll notice it coincides with the noise of the traffic. You can hear a car coming and then the light.
      I shot this about 1 in the morning so the traffic noise wouldn't be so bad but there's still a lot of ppl out cruising around.
      Thanks for keeping an eye out for me and your wife too! If that was an electrical spark I could of had some serious problems.

    • @kenzpenz
      @kenzpenz 6 лет назад +1

      Yup, played it over again and this time listened for the traffic noise and sure enough your right. Glad all is well, hey lets not get into the memory thing now, the wife and I had that discussion today and it was about, OK what was I looking for ? or better yet why am I out in the garage. Dang like a guy said, This old age has come at a very bad time in my life.

      I'll tell ya, it's tough sometimes and I totally understand. Run out to the shop to do something and forget what it was I was going to do.
      What really drives me nuts is I work in a secure building where I have to scan my badge and punch in a 4 digit code to get through the doors. I am in and out of the doors a couple dozen times a day, and I'll forget what the hell my code is. I'll stand there for a couple of minutes, clear my brain, and it will finally come to me again .... makes me crazy!

    It’s really not loud. There are so many things that are louder in my shop. I wouldn’t mess with it. I’m looking at this video because I’d like to add a press to the shop. I’m thinking of just leaving it gas and build a small shelter right outside. Only 8 feet from the forge.

    i am really like your press I want to make one with a 50 ton wood log spliter, can you tell me were I can get the rest of the parts names, and capacity I am going to need and the brand you recommend on each part and wee to get it online thank you very much!

    • @johnbleau9379
      @johnbleau9379 4 года назад +1

      Black diamond makes a 50 ton log splitter for about $3k. Amazon sells a 7.5hp 3600 rpm 1ph electric motor for about $500. The conversion for gas engine to electric motor is 2:1 horsepower both run at 3600 rpm. So the 50 ton log splitter has a 15 hp gas engine and a 7.5 electric motor would do the same work. You can also get the lovejoy couplings on Amazon, just need to research the shaft sizes.You'll also need wiring and connections and the metal to fabricate the dies and convert from a log splitter.

    G,day Shane, had a look at all your vids on your press build, looks terriffic,, i have some questions,, i noticed your ram is a 25 ton, i have been looking at purchasing a 30ton splitter from ebay but i am a little confused with the electric motor transplant. I am wanting to go with a 5 hp single phase 2800rpm motor as i dont have 3 phase power,, i am wondering if the lesser hp of the electric motor compared to the 6.5hp fuel engine will affect the hydraulic rams performance ,, or is it an rpm issue??, does higher rpm make the ram operate faster?? what would the optimum electric motor rpm be for a 30 ton ram be??
