There was a discussion earlier about the capacity of your press. According to my calculations, with two 4.5 inch cylinders at 3000 psi, your press is rated at 47.7 US tons. This assumes everything is working at their very best. I'm no expert, but this press is one of the finest builds I have ever seen. You are very talented. Thank you for sharing! Jerry

Finally, a video author that realizes his viewership is global and states both metric and sae measurements. Your english is fine. Never apologize for multi-language skills. Love your press. You put some details on that thing that most home built tools never have like the upper and lower stops etc. Keep up the good work.
I just don't understand why people would give a video like this a thumbs down. The man did a beautiful job of building this thing and explaining it, and showing it and yet there's people out there that just can't seem to appreciate any of it. My theory is they either have no idea how to do this. They don't know what it is that they're looking at, or they have failed miserably at trying to do this! Great job!

Karl, do NOT apologize for your english. It's easier to understand than some Americans and some Brits and they were born to it. If your up rites, channel iron, were turned in instead of out, could you have used it to guide the ram? Maybe not, no way to get it out for service should you need to in the future. It's a thought. Great job. I'll keep in mind the multiple rams for mine. Happy squishing and squashing.

Nice build, if I may suggest, I would make it so you can have it run automatic also. Have top and bottom travel limits set as you are planning to build them and it cycles from down and up over and over again. You will use it a lot for long pieces of steel to bring them down to size. Put a tape measure on the column too with a marker on the cross beam, that way you have a quick reference for setting the bottom limit.
I have watched many videos on home built presses but yours is by far the best thought out and built of the lot. Well done. You should be very proud. If you make these plans available for saIe I will be the first one to purchase them.
Your English is great so don't feel pressured. The following is from a Canadian point of view of English, western Canadian to be more precise. Commonly the liquid used for machines like your press is referred to as hydraulic "fluid" so you had it right from where I'm listening. Oil is reserved for usage where lubricating or bearing load support is it's primary purpose. Brake liquid wet stuff gets the "fluid" designation too. English is full of rules to be broken and you'll constantly come across inconsistencies at an inconsistent rate. Nice press too.
That’s awesome man, and don’t apologize for your English, you have better English then some of us Oklahoma folks lol. Have you thought about wiring in limit switches? They are easy to install. Kinda like on my milling machine. I can kick my auto feed in and when it hits the limit switch it’ll kill the power to that direction but will allow you to auto feed in the other direction. Thanks. Electronic limit switches is probably much better way to go. But I am absolute rubbish when it comes to electronic and viring. I made mechanical ones, in other video. And it just does the job just fine for what I do.

Your design is by far one of the best designs that I have seen on RUclips I’ve looked at single piston presses and dual piston presses and yours it is the most non-complex design that I’ve come across this is truly a great press and I’ve watched your video probably about 10 maybe 15 times and I’m probably gonna keep watching it do you have plans that you can sell or maybe send to an email how much are you asking for the plans.

Great press build, quick change die holders, large control lever with with foot control, tool stops up and down , lots of great ideas , nice fabrication work. Your bench vise? , looks modified to open wider. Thanks for sharing the press build , keep up the good work.
Thank you. I believe that having strong press is just a half of the story. It is all the details and features that makes it good machine to work with. The bench vise is just stock, I think. Unfortunately there are no markings on it, so I cant compare it to the others of this type.
Have you made plans for this press? I would be interested in some nice drawings as my friend is a machinist and he's well versed with hydraulics. We are looking for pictures, drawing and specs.
You can buy an automatic return chest valve. They sell them for log splitters. Push the handle up and the ram fully returns when it senses some pressure it stops. Google it
That "1st Press" of the square tubing is really a good shape! - Impossible to reproduce any other way. So the question remains, Is it better to power hammer or forge press a hunk of steel? They are so different in their upsetting - does it make a difference in the metallurgy?
@@KarlMetalworks With multiple cylinders, you can use a pressure balancer to even the descent when your load is off center. But it makes sense for you not to use one in this configuration since your load is centered and your ram is well guided on both sides. Anyway, big thumbs up!

Thanks. I didn't use any plans. Its all about a piston and pump you can get at then you go from there. You should also check local scrapyards to see if they have some nice beams for sale.
Super machine. I think I like how quietly it runs as much as anything else. Some of these presses are obnoxiously loud. How did you get yours so quiet?
This may break your heart, but I the audio is actually edited, so the viewers ears wont bleed. The pres is very noisy when started, when it heats up a little, it is just bearable without ear protection. But I use earplugs almost all day anyway. I wish It was quieter.
How do you know or estimate 40 tons? I’ve wanted to build a press but don’t want to under build for the work I want to do. Nice video and explanation! Love the simple die changes. I’d recommend skipping the cm-inch conversion. You’re only helping us Americans avoid becoming compatible with the rest of the world 😀
I measured the pistons bore. The pump gives 220BAR max. I used this online calculator to do the math for me, its like piston displacement times pressure, or something. It calculates the force in newton, and I converted it to tons. It can be few tons off, because of the lame measuring, but 40tons just sounds right:) www.tss.trelleborg.com/apps/hydraulic_cylinder/ I wish you American guys used metric, it would make your life a lot easier. All that 18/35th of an Inch..... It must be confusing as hell :)

Hi, thank you. Unfortunately there is no BOM to this press. I just used whatever I had lying around. I suggest checking your local scrap yard to see what steel is available there.

Hi - Cool Build. I'm looking to build a forging press myself but know nothing about hydraulics. The Ram, the motor, the pump??? Do you know of any resources where I can find out the basic information sufficient for me to put a plan together??
There are some facebook groups focusing on building a forging presses. You are looking for some 5kw (7hp) motor with pump. That can pump 220BAR (3000psi) at about 30liters /minute. And piston with 150mm bore (6inch). Use this website to do the math: www.tss.trelleborg.com/apps/hydraulic_cylinder/ There is a guy repairing hydraulics in every bigger town in the world. So maybe find one in your area and start there.
Thanks. Rams and pump were bought from local craigslist, so I dont know. But the rams, similar size can be found on various machinery like diggers and cranes. Motor runs on 400v 3phase (European standard)

That's the best set of dies I've seen on a press. And I love the full extend and retract protection! Never seen that anywhere else.

Engineering seems spot on, very nice build and effective design. Your dies swapping demo was impressive. Do you use some kind of pressure balancer?
Thanks, no pressure balancer on the machine. Not sure what a pressure balancer do. So I think, I don't need it :)

I got it from a local (Czech republic) craigslist. Its 7hp 3phase motor, it pumps about 30liters/second. And at about 220BAR max.

Bore is 115mm (4.5Inches) stroke is 30cm (12Inch). Pump does 30L/min (8gpm) I think.
