- Drum roll please... King Arthur Baking's 2023 Recipe of the Year is Cinnamon-Crisp Coffee Cake! Every January, our team is thrilled to unveil the newest Recipe of the Year - and 2023 is extra special because it's our TENTH year of doing it. In this video, Kye Ameden shows you how to make Cinnamon-Crisp Coffee Cake, which is the first of ten different coffee cake variations, in honor of our 10th anniversary. Crowned with cinnamon-scented crumbs and hiding a layer of sweet, fudgy filling, this coffee cake may look like a classic rendition, but it's our perfected version of the traditional breakfast sweet. We’ve updated the mixing method to use reverse creaming, a foolproof way to prevent overmixing and ensure a tender cake. Try your hand at making your own snackable cake that’s wildly adaptable and utterly irresistible - and tell your friends about the 2023 Recipe of the Year!

This instructor is excellent! She is knowledgeable and detailed, yet doesn’t make the preparation seem complicated. It’s better when exact measurements are given while item is being made. 👍🏻
Thank you!
Response from my sister “I hope you save this recipe “. Best compliment a person could get. It’s a delicious cake. I did make one change, I added chopped walnuts to the filling.
Aw, love that! 😊 -👩🍳Kat
That sounds delicious. How much of the chopped walnuts did you add?
Adding cocoa to filling? Reverse creaming? Learned at least two new baking tricks! 🥮💙 Thank you Kye and KAF!
Valuable recipes from King Arthur! And the flour from this company is great!Thank you!🌷🌷🌷
I will definitely make this! Perfect instructions and great tips/explanations throughout this video I learned a lot. Thank you so much!!!! Pamela ☕️❤
She is a master of descriotion!

The next recipe on my upcoming baking endeavor! I have been looking for a good coffee cake, but this one looks amazing! Thank you Kye for sharing and now I am excited for what’s in store for the rest of 2023!
Let us know how it goes, Lisa! -🍮Nicole
You're an amazing teacher Kye!!! I made this a few weeks ago. All KAF recipes knock it outta the park, but this was a grand slam. My husband couldn't stop the compliments with every bite. Happy New Year!
Looking forward to baking with you in the New Year, Marlene! -🍮Nicole
Delicious! I made this yesterday afternoon after coming across this video. Froze half for another weekend! This afternoon we enjoyed a slice warmed in the microwave. Just like fresh out of the oven! best coffee cake - ever! The chocolate in the streusel is yummy! I like the process of butter/flour blending first.
Wonderful job, Kye. This is sooo yummy looking.
Very clear instructions !! Thank you !!!
This looks incredible! Can't wait to try this one, all the other variations as well. Wonderful video.
We're so excited to finally be able to share these recipes! We can't wait to hear what you think! 😊 -👩🍳Morgan
What a fun take on coffee cake! I feel like this would be so fun with a really dark hot chocolate to balance the cinnamon-sugar sweetness of the cake!
I have "black" cocoa and have been pondering whether to use it. It's like what you get in Oreos.
-chocolate in cinnamon-
-coffee cake.. yikes !-
This Coffee Cake looks perfect!
Thank you! Looks so yummy 😋
I made the Birthday Cake version last week to take to a scrapbook retreat. It was a super success. I didn’t watch the video before I made the coffee cake; now, I see watching the video tips and techniques has made the process more clear. I will be making this again. For the first time, I used the silicon mat instead of parchment, and it made it very easy to get it out of the pan.
Thanks for the tip! So happy to hear it was a winner 😄🏆 -🍮Nicole
Definitely making this coffee cake! Great instructions. Well delivered. 😊
Yay! We definitely want to know what you think about this layered delight 🧡 -🍮Nicole
This came out SO good, I can’t believe I actually made it myself when eating it. This video was extremely helpful when following the written recipe from your site. I did add some princess flavored baking emulsion to the cake and it was delicious.
Thank you for celebrating this recipe with us 🥳 Happy baking! -🍮Nicole

I made this last week! I did have to make it dairy-free due to a diet restriction for a family member and it still came out delicious!

This recipe looks amazing thanks for sharing have a great day ❤
Enjoyed watching the video. First time viewer and I thought it was excellent. Easy to follow what to do. Thank you for that and the recipe. I look forward to baking this. Good job.👍
Looks absolutely yumo and great presentation!!! Will make after my fast! 🥴
Wonderful explanation of what ingredients to use and why! Can't wait to try this. It looks fantastic! Thanks.
So glad to hear you found it helpful! -👩🍳Kat
Great video! Looks delicious. Thanks!!
We hope you'll love it ☕! Happy Recipe of the Year baking! -🍮Nicole
This looks delicious! I got an e-mail from King Arthur with this recipe and I printed it out. Watching you make it, is the icing on the cake! LOL The recipe did mention we could use whole milk for the cake, so I'll be using that. But I will definitely update how it turned out. Gosh, this looks delicious! Thumbs up. Wonderful video. UPDATE: Delicious! I went exactly, to the letter, by the directions. I used whole, organic milk. I baked mine for 45 minutes. Perfect! I tried eating only one piece, but like those famous chips, you can't eat just one! So, I had two. My husband loved this too. Thanks King Arthur!
This sounds delicious. I love cinnamon.
Thank you!!! I'm going to make this delicious coffee cake
Thank you for baking with us, Jeff! -🍮Nicole
I am a Student at University of Mount Olive and for one of my classes my professor suggested your account for baking help. The ateps and instructions are simple and easy to follow. For someone who does not bake often I appreciate the explanation of the use of parchment paper and how make it fit accordingly with the handles. I would have missed this step and wish I didn't later on if it wasn't for your tip. Thank you!
We're so glad you enjoyed this video, Carly! Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
Wow, I can't wait to make this coffee cake! Kye, your instructions were very clear and you made it look so easy. Thank you! It looks delicious and great for an afternoon coffee or tea.😋
This looks so delicious ❤😊
I like King Arthur products. Been using them for decades.
I want to make this today.
Kyle, thanks for the great baking advice. You have such a refreshing presence in this video. Can’t wait to bake this weekend.
Overall a great video. Wonderful logical steps that are easy to follow. Lots of king arthur baking products placed throughout the video which is great from a marketing standpoint. This comment is coming from a student at the University of Mount Olive located in lovely NC
I bake often but like that I picked up a couple tips even still with watching this. Thanks!
We're so happy to hear that! -👩🍳Morgan
Hey there! I'm a student at UMO and I found your video pretty interesting. I'm still fairly new to the coffee game and my tastebuds are immature so a sweet treat like this would pair perfectly to a nice cup-of-joe. The cake looks great and maybe one day I'd give it a shot. I found it very helpful about the parchment paper tip about folding the excess paper to use as a little flap/handle! That's some smart baking:)
I already buy King Arthur wheat flour but im pumped to have an awesome new recipe to try
We're so glad to hear that! Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
I made this coffee cake because it's different and it's delicious 😋
🧡🧡🧡 -🍮Nicole
Hi there! You sure can substitute eggs here. Commercial egg substitutes will work and we also have a blog article on choosing the right substitutes for your bakes: www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2021/01/21/guide-for-substituting-eggs-best-egg-replacers. We hope you enjoy 🧡! -🍮Nicole
Dang good looking coffee cake. Maybe Blueberry Buckle next?
Love the recipe and so appreciate your tutorials. I cannot wait to give this coffee cake a try. Love the touch of cocoa in the filling. Can I double the recipe and make it in a 9×13? Many thanks. ♥️
I doubled it and used a tube pan with a removable bottom; it came out perfectly and made for a really nice presentation.
Hi Maria! You can definitely double this recipe, however, instead of pouring it into a single 9” x 13” pan, we recommend pouring it into two 8” squares, two 9” rounds, or a combination of the two. This will ensure that the coffee cake will bake properly and evenly (rather than sinking in the middle). Happy baking!
Hi Teresa, there is always a printer friendly version on the recipe page that is linked above. You can find this one here: bakewith.us/CinnamonCrispCoffeeCakeYT Hope this helps! -👩🍳Maranda
Would this freeze well? It looks delish. She did a great job!
You could definitely freeze this coffee cake, Julia! We'd recommend letting it cool completely and then wrapping it well before storing it in the freezer. Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
I like how you do that
Excellent video
Thanks! -👩🍳Kat
❤️
Oo love the oven cam!!! Now for the live feed 😋
Thank you for sharing from Diana a. V
Looks wonderful! I'm going to try a Gluten Free version using your Measure for Measure flour! Would anything need to be done differently?
Hi there! We have a gluten-free version of the recipe on our website. It features the gluten-free flour, so you should be all set 🥳 -🍮Nicole
Wow, cake looks very delicious but I wonder - can you do the reverse creaming with a hand mixer, or is a stand mixer necessary?
Also Kye is awesome :)
You could definitely use this method with a hand mixer, just be sure your bowl is large enough so you don't end up with dry ingredients escaping the bowl! Kye is pretty dang great! 🧡 -👩🍳Morgan
Looks so delicious! The only addition I’ll make is adding chopped walnuts to the crumble topping. Debi in Vicksburg, MS. 🥰🥰
Love that addition, Debi 😄 Happy baking! -🍮Nicole
Pecans for me.
Great looking coffee cake! Do you have any tips for removing the parchment paper so It can be put onto a nice serving plate?
Hi, Carolyn! After resting in the pan for 30 minutes you'll first flip the coffee cake over onto a sheet pan or plate (whichever is best for controlling loosing too many crumbs for the pan you choose), remove the parchment paper and then flip onto your nice serving plate. Happy baking 🧡! -🍮Nicole
Question about King Arthur recipe on the website. For the unsweetened cocoa it says 2 tablespoons (12 grams) when i scooped two tablespoons my scale read 6 grams. Is the website wrong on the weight or could it be the brand I was using isn't as dense as what you used? I was unsure to go with my 2 tablespoons or go by the 12 grams weight. I ended up just doing the 2 tablespoons and the recipe did come out good.
Hey there! Thanks for reaching out! That's why we highly recommend weighing ingredients rather than using volume measurements. Volume can vary a lot based on who is measuring and how they measure. Also, depending on the kind of scale you have, 12 grams may be too light of an amount for it to read accurately. We hope this can help! Kindly, -👩🍳Morgan
At what temp. Did you bake the cake ?
I’ve made the raspberry coffee cake which was terrific can we freeze these cakes?
You sure can! Just wrap it well in plastic so it doesn't absorb any funky freezer smells. 😊 -👩🍳Kat
When you realize that all of these videos are just one big advertisement for King Arthur but you’re not hating it
Dude King Arthur is good stuff!!! Cheaper than most brands and way way higher quality!!! Plus they have the protein content easily printed.
It punches way above its weight but it’s as cheap as gold medal (don’t buy that by the way)!!!
I just take the recipe and use the ingredients I like
Love King Arthur, always used their bread flour for my bread machine recipes…and AP, etc!
-#cheers-- !-
I only use King Arthur because I want the best so I’m good with it
The cook instructor is great -attitude and I really like the voice - a little raspy - but terrific! I vote keep her!
Kye has been an employee owner with KA for over 10 years. She's a kind and beautiful person, inside and out. She's not going anywhere.
Lovely representative, for your company.
Delicious cake, too.
Please print list of ingrdients, because this is too fast to writedown instructions
@@teresavillarreal3504it's on their website.
Wonderful Coffee cake. I will try sometime in the future. Love the lady demonstrating this cake. Thank you!! ❤💜
Am curious can you use the silicon cake liners for this recipe,.like the liners you sell in your store?
You sure can, Matt! -👩🍳Morgan
Does this recipe need any adjustments if using a sugar substitute like KA's or Swerve?
Hey there! You could use our Baking Sugar Alternative in this coffee cake. It'll be a 1:1 swap by volume, for other brands we'd recommend following the substitution directions on the packaging. Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
This is my coffeecake that my grandson requests all the time, but you've taken it up a notch. I've been making the same one since his mom was a little girl (50+ years), and normally I'd say don't mess with success. But I'm gonna bite the bullet and give this a try, because RUclips was sentient and presented this video on the very day my grandson is having his housewarming party and requested that I bring my coffeecake! It was meant to be.😍
That's so sweet! We hope you enjoy this recipe, and we wish your grandson best of luck with his new home! 💛 -👩🍳Kat
Hi..
Kindly tell if we can substitute eggs in this recipe..
Thank you 🙏
New to gluten free so can a gluten-free flour blend be used in place of the KA flour?
This recipe works beautifully using our Gluten-Free Measure for Measure Flour! 😊 -👩🍳Kat
What are the measurements for the two sugars needed for the crumb topping please. Thank you 😊
Hi, Diane! The crumb topping calls for 6 tablespoons (75g) granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons (14g) confectioners' sugar, sifted if lumpy. Let us know how it goes! -🍮Nicole
So what’s the oven temperature and how long does it bake?
Hi, Mary! You can find all the details here in the recipe: www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/cinnamon-crisp-coffee-cake-recipe. Happy baking! 💛 -👩🍳Kat
Anyone have any tips to get it off the parchment paper and onto a serving plate? Does it slide onto a serving dish easily?
It slides pretty easily, especially if you can use a spatula to ease things along! But you can also do the double flip method if you prefer. Slide your entire coffee cake with the parchment onto a large plate. Place a second plate upside-down on top of the cake. Using one hand on top and the other on the bottom, flip them over so your cake is now sitting upside down on a plate with the parchment on top, remove the parchment, then repeat the process again onto your serving plate. You'll probably lose a bit of streusel this way, but it's another option for folks who are struggling with their parchment. Happy baking -👩🍳Kat
What oven temperature. How many minutes do you cook it??
Hi, Jeanette! If you expand the recipe's description by clicking "show more" you'll find a link to the recipe, which also includes helpful tips from our bakers. Happy coffee cake baking! -🍮Nicole
@@KingArthurBakingCompany thank you I found it😊
Could you substitute sour cream for the buttermilk/Greek yogurt?
I always do this! I love the flavor and always have it on hand. Not sure why it’s not recommended as a substitute for buttermilk more often.
Hi Charlie! You could do that here! If you find the sour cream you have on hand is on the thicker side you can add a splash of milk to thin it out. Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
Wow! New sub here! I recently made a Latte on my page too and *your dish looks amazing!* Hope to stay connected! 😁
What, no nuts?! I realize there are people who are allergic to them, but I personally would add either walnuts or pecans to the filling or.the streusel. this adds another delicious element of crunch❤
What would happen if for the crumble topping you used cream cheese instead of butter?
Hey there! The crumble would be a lot softer and more cake-like than streusel-like since cream cheese has a much higher water content than butter. Kindly, -👩🍳Morgan
Is this better to eat freshly made or the next day?
Hi there! This coffee cake will keep well at room temperature for four to five days. Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
How do you get the coffee cake off the parchment paper
Hi, Susan! You'll remove the cake from the pan using the overhanging edges of parchment as handles to gently lift the coffee cake out to then place on a cooling rack. Next you'll top the crumble with powdered sugar or glaze and then transfer the entire coffee cake to a dish or cutting board for serving by lifting it off of the parchment with a spatula or flat utensil to support the coffee cake. -🍮Nicole
Has anyone tried to use sourdough discard in the cake recipe? I'm curious how that would work or change the flavor.
Hey there! That's not something we've tried ourselves but you're welcome to experiment! You can use the steps in our Adding sourdough to a recipe article for help doing this: www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2015/10/29/adding-sourdough-recipe Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
This looks so delicious! Except the cocoa. I would prefer just sugar and cinnamon filling.
Feel free to modify it! That's the joy of home baking. 😊 -👩🍳Kat
Any tips on converting it to gluten free?
We got you! www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/gluten-free-cinnamon-crisp-coffee-cake-recipe -👩🍳Maranda
Does anybody know if the buttermilk or yogurt can be replaced with sour cream?
Sure, Robin! That would be just fine. Happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
I think a springform pan is more appropriate for this recipe.
CanI make this gluten free?
You sure can, Kathie 😄 This recipe can me made with our gluten-free measure for measure flour. Happy baking 🧡! -🍮Nicole
how much buttermilk? Thank you.
Hi, Irma! This recipe calls for one cup (227 grams) of buttermilk or full-fat Greek yogurt, whichever you prefer. You'll find the fill recipe for this fabulous cinnamon-crisp coffee cake here: www.kingarthurbaking.com/recipes/cinnamon-crisp-coffee-cake-recipe. Happy baking! -🍮Nicole
What does craggly mean?
I have a corn allergy,& cane sugar allergy. What can substitute for 10x sugar?
If it's just cane sugar you're allergic to, I'd suggest beet sugar, which is actually more common and less expensive here in the US, at least. We haven't tried this particular recipe with coconut sugar, but that's also another option that you might want to try. Happy baking! -👩🍳Kat
@@KingArthurBakingCompany is there a beet confectioner sugar without corn starch? I have 27 diagnosed plant allergies.
Oh gosh, I'm not sure! If there is, it's probably made with potato starch. -👩🍳Kat
@@KingArthurBakingCompany that would be good for me. I will research if it is available or if I can make it.
If we could have list of ingredients and measurements in print, it wpul be easier to copy and make this coffee cake.
No leavening agent, baking powder or soda?
Hi, Gloria! If you expand the video's description by selecting "Show more" you'll find the link to the recipe to locate the amount of leavening agents. Happy baking! -🍮Nicole
How much powdered sugar and how much granulated sugar?
Hi, Gloria! All the ingredients and amounts are listed in the recipe, which is linked in the video description. Happy baking! 😊 -👩🍳Kat
@@KingArthurBakingCompany Thank You for replying to my comment! I finally found the recipe listing the amounts! I will try this recipe!😊
Could you give me the full recipe as you didn't give amount of ingredients for the batter.and crumbs. Thank you.
Hi, Marilyn! If you expand the video's description by selecting "show more" you'll find the full recipe. 85 grams of butter is 6 tablespoons 😄 Happy baking! -🍮Nicole
What’s the difference between Vietnamese cinnamon and regular cinnamon?
Hi JoAnn! Vietnamese cinnamon is stronger and a little more spicy than regular cinnamon, it also has a higher oil content so it disperses better in batters. We hope this can help and happy baking! -👩🍳Morgan
You said, "spread with the bottom of your offset spatula" That would be a great trick if you could spread it with the top of the spatula. lol
Haha, true! You can totally use the edge, though. 😊 -👩🍳Kat
They're always very thorough in their explanations 😂
How much sugar ,you didn't give either sugar amounts. Also how much is 85 grams of butter.
How much butter?
Hi, Stephanie! You can find all the ingredients and amounts in the recipe linked to in the video description. -👩🍳Kat
@@KingArthurBakingCompany thank you, I actually used y’all’s recipe on the website to plug in the missing information and boy did these turn out super delicious 😋, thanks again
So happy to hear it! -👩🍳Kat
Does it beat a cinnamon roll? That's the real question.
You'll have to let us know! -🍮Nicole
No, but it’s easier
@@sahej6939 true, I made it, it does not beat a cinnamon roll
It’s completely different - one is a cake with cinnamon and cocoa filling and the other one is a soft, slightly chewy roll with cinnamon filling. So, it really depends on the experience you’re looking for in your cinnamon-flavoured baked good. If you want to eat something with a fork and maybe with some ice cream, for a dessert then the cake would be the best bet. If you want to eat something a little sticky, and don’t want to use a fork, then the roll is the way to go!
Does anything?
I forgot to add salt to the batter 😢😅
I didn’t see or hear how much sugar or confection sugar was used
Hi, Alvina! 😊 All measurements can be found in the recipe, linked in the description box below this video. The link will take you straight to the recipe page on our website! Happy baking 😄 -🥐Lily

4:05 "until you have pieces that are the size of Peas to Walnuts"?????? I don't think that is what you meant to say. The size of Walnuts???
Hi there! You want to cut in the butter until you have chunks of butter, some the size of walnuts and some the size of peas. Think shelled peas and walnuts though! We hope this can help to clarify! Kindly, -👩🍳Morgan
I would like to see the recipe listed for each item and the amount You use grams and you also use teaspoons and tablespoons very confusing
