  • Today Noah from Pogo - Coding and More is over to teach you guys how to create your own Fusion Drive. I've used this method in a couple videos, and Noah helped me with those, so I asked if he could make a tutorial video to help you guys! Make sure to subscribe to his channel: / pogostick29dev
    Commands used in this video:
    1. List drives: diskutil list
    2. Create logical volume group: diskutil coreStorage create FusionDrive /dev/diskNsA /dev/diskMsB where you fill in N, A, M, and B based on the video
    3. Create volume: diskutil coreStorage createVolume FusionDrive jhfs+ “Macintosh HD” 100%
    4. Install macOS on the new volume

I just bought an inexpensive 2014 mac mini and was about upgrade it by adding a secondary ssd in addition to the 1tb mechanical drive. Is there any reason this would not work? Also what size would your suggest for the ssd in Catalina?

Don't we want to use APFS? How to change the terminal progamming to do that?

With newer versions of MAC OS they made it easier. Basically it combines it for you. Now this is all you have to do.
Type diskutil resetFusion in the Terminal window, then press enter.
Type Yes (with a capital Y) when prompted, then press enter.
When Terminal indicates that the operation was successful, quit Terminal to return to the macOS Utilities window.
    Choose Reinstall macOS.

@@williamrking3 no problem dude I'm doing a fresh install now with it. And it takes forever, to the point you think its not gonna work. If you have that problem then its normal. took about 3-4 hours for me to install monterey. But it all worked out for me.

Excellent straight-forward guidance to properly set up a fusion drive. Thank you! 🙏🏻 I have a late-2013 27” iMac with a 3TB Fusion Drive and it’s getting slower. Upgrading the PCIe NVMe to a 2TB (or 4TB) and then adding a 4TB SSD to create a faster fusion drive.

So, what happens, when you want to backup this odd size fusiondrive? The back-up drive naturally has to be equal in size, but what about the placement of files, should you need to delete or overwrite the fusion with the backup?
also, will the hdd-part be dormant, when not needed [and when is that?] or be as active as the SSD? I'm thinking longivity here.
And what if you physically need to replace one of the two piggybackers - what about the data on just that drive, or do you have to start over by wiping the other and reinstall the whole of the backup?
Please do a 2020 consequences video, as there are a lot of old machines out there still needing that love and attention.

    Hi Luke! AMAZING process.
I'm fascinated by the partitioning move just to recognize them in the Terminal's - diskutil list -
Your process is the clearest that I've seen for High Sierra>x and I think I'll go with your process.
I've changed my internal HDD with the evo SSD. IMac retina 21.5 late 2015.
I'm now on internet recovery mode (as no OS is inside the IMac) and I wasn't sure about what to do, should I open the terminal and create the Fusion Drive like you did?
When I create the Fusion Drive does it create any issues the fact that they are both SSD's?
Or is it better to just format them separately one by one as APFS without merging them toghether?
Thanks for your time and congrats on the amazing video content!
PS: In Disk Utility I also have a disk image of the OS X Base System as you do. That shouldn't create any problem on the Terminal sa long as I select the correct dev/disks (SSD Samsung and SSD Flash Drive) right?

Did you find a solution with 2 SSD's? I'm on the same boat and looking for reliabe command codes that work with 2 ssds.

When installing osx, does the installer know to install onto the ssd? And does it know to put downloads and other files on the hdd? Also, would this kethod work on osx mavericks?

OSX should boot off the ssd and move all more commonly used files there. Then but less commonly used files on the hdd.
