That iMac has an internal NVME interface! You only need a tiny adapter for the proprietary slot. The performance will be at least 5-6 times higher than what you have now.

      You absolutely right.
The issue is that interface is on the wrong side of the logic board and would require a lot to dissemble.
In the past I have swapped the mechanical drive for a sata ssd.
Whilst it won’t look pretty, this method allows anyone to do it, with no risk.

@@TechTalkofDan if I can do it you can do it. I put a Samsung 970 plus in my iMac with adapter and get 2500 writes, 3000 reads. Also have an internal 1tb sata ssd for storage. Most recent time I just is Pokémon cards to cut the adhesive in the iMac. it works excellent you don’t go in more than a fingernail deep and be careful around the camera. Take your time watch some videos. trust me if I can do it you can do it. I am just contemplating putting a i7 7700 in as well, that might be pushing it for me. Cheers

@@jackiescum5438 My iMac is currently refusing load. So I'm currently debating whether to take it apart or scrap it.

@@TechTalkofDandon’t scrap it do the full take apart and double ssd upgrade, what have you got to lose, just for fun? We know the value of the machine makes it not worth it but hell why not ;)

    Hi Dan,
I have an iMac that I boot from a Samsung T5 external SSD via USB 3 and get similar (even a bit higher) speeds as you. I also have Thunderbolt 1 adapters and external casings but the SSD speed does not increase as it all is restricted by the SATA interface. If I could get my hands on a NVME to thunderbolt adapter it would increase the speed drastically but I have not be able to find one. The alternative is replacing the internal Apple SSD by an NVME drive with an adapter, which I did with my 2014 Mac Mini and 2013 Mac Pro, but as the. iMac is not my main machine, going to the hassle of opening it up is too much for the speed improvement above the T5.
    Greetings,
    Peter

Interestingly, my iMac had the sata drive replaced with an SSD. However, like everything it broke after a 4 years of usage. This is why I’m loathed to replace it again.

Interesting experiment but not better than installing an internal sata ssd, how about thunderbolt to nvme? I guess enclosures are too expensive? Which is the problem with thunderbolt?

Interestingly that iMac did have an aftermarket SSD in it.
However, it died and I'm loathed to take it apart again.
I have another video where I did connect that iMac to an external ThunderBolt enclosure. ruclips.net/video/2_5EJFpLlR0/видео.htmlsi=5CKv1dc0-NXBiz7l
Which is faster than the internal SATA port.

Hi Dan nice video but you should look at who your talking to, it could be us on the other side of the screen, talking to an Imaginary audience off to your right and left is very strange behavior! Mate!

Thanks for your comments. You're right, it does look a tad odd. It was an experiment and didn't come out as I'd hoped.

Hello this is right but I like the way this as been done because it give the video a look of interview. Maybe adding images from a camera that you are looking at could be cool
