probably the dent on the back of the screen is making contact with the screen and that's the cause for the dark spot. its the same if you apply pressure from the front with your fingertip, you think you can remove the screens backplate and flatten it a bit? that might solve it. Cheers
Speaking as a technician - this is an easy fix. Take off the lid, disassemble it to the point where the spot is visible (from my knowledge it is only the display) and work on it with a hammer. Protect the hammer with a cloth and also the underground you are working on - and don't bang it too hard :D The display just shows a stress mark, which is reversible. If you eliminate the tension of the lid, this is a OEM fix. Was a good deal
@@mikemaj2 I know :( I cracked some of these lower bezels myself, but with a little bit of heat and a bit of force these come off easily. The issue with replacing the screen through third party or if you DIY is that you not only loose True Tone, which is fine if that's the only thing you loose, but from my own experience replacing the screen from another parts machine, unfortunately you also get artefacts on the top of the screen like rectangular shadows, there is a big jump in brightness when passing the half way mark and below the halfway mark you can tell the calibration is off as there are small square blocks that lights up brighter on parts of the screen as it tries to figure out the content on screen and the brightness to apply. It's annoying at low brightness but not an issue past the half way mark. You'll need to find a 3rd party repair place that can also take the chip containing the security pairing from the original screen to transfer into the replacement. That's why you see some of these services on eBay saying they need the original screen.

I'll bet that the dark spot issue can be fixed by applying auto body shop techniques to remove the dimple in the case top cover. This woud be done by adhering a hot glue post to the center of the dimple and pulling it up to take the pressure of of the display module. Most like coud be done with the cover still on the MBP.
The dark spot can be fixed. Its because of the reduced gap between the display and the white plastic filter for the backlight being reduced. Repairing the dent will most likely fix this
I’ve been using my 14” M1 Pro base model MacBook Pro since January 2023 and it’s been amazing. No complaints over a year later. It seems like it’ll last forever.

Of course you're never sure what's up with it until you receive it. When I did I was blown away. It looked brand new. Not one mark on it. And the battery cycle count was 14 and battery health was 100%. 19 months old. I'm so jacked. I also have an M1 Mac Mini and this one runs about 80% faster. I paid $1030 + tax = $1120. I'm a really good shopper. :) 👍✊

I currently own the M3 Pro MacBook Pro 18GB/512GB Space Black, but I baby mine and didn't want to actually take it out of the house! (I know) So I have just managed to get myself the M1 Pro 14, 10 core CPU/16 core GPU 16GB/1TB for £690!! What a saving, these newer models do not seem to be keeping their value as well as Macs used to, which is weird. Keep up the great work. Almost time for M4 Macs haha..
I got the exact same without the defect for $1,100 and it was my first entry into Macs. I haven’t looked back since. Best bang for buck ever! All day battery life with so much power! I struggle to get anything else
I got the exactly the same model for around $1,400, brand new, fully sealed, not used before. basically a perfect Mac in pristine condition for a reasonable price. it's literally at 3 charging cycles right now, I love it.
A tip for those who are willing to buy some macbook with similar problem, there is a catch: You have to try to un dent it right after you buy it, mine was the same and with time the screen cracked by itself because of the pressure on the glass. I gess the screen being so slim and with a material that has no elasticity makes the impressive screen rather fragile. Now i have a screenless m1 pro for 500.
I tried to love the Apple Silicon Mac's but I ultimately had to go back to Intel Mac's due to ARM compatibility issues. Bootcamp is absolutely imperative to my IT job and running a half baked ARM version of Windows in Parallels under a subscription is a scam and it only works when it wants to work.
I was looking into an M1 Air/Pro but the M2 Mini price point is too good to pass up IMO. Im surprised a lot of M1 Airs with 8gb/256gb are still asking $500+
it's still a very functional machine. but when you realize u can get a M1 16GB 1TB MBP for $150 more if u look around, I get the surprise! I actually paid for the same spec mini for the same price & he was nice to cancel the sale so I could get the MBP - couldn't be happier!
I would play some music or videos on it and check to see if there an audio glitch that causes sporadic audio distortion through the Mac's speakers. Otherwise, it's sound fairly reasonable.
got a fully functional 14 inch m1pro for 1000 bucks a month ago, no dents, no scratches and only 36 cycles, one of the best deals i´ve ever gotten. was a steal really
Try with suction cup you used to open the bottom to pop the dent out, did that couple of times and sometimes had to use a bit of heat and always worked. I think the dent is slightly pressing on your backlight.
Still loving my 14” M1 Pro MBP, with 16GB of RAM. Been rocking it since launch and it’s like new. That said, I’m looking forward to the M4 line, only because I want the 16” for photo editing while traveling.
I picked up a base model 14" M1 Pro 8/14 16/512 this spring for $900 on FB Marketplace. It's in pretty perfect condition with Apple Care+ until July 2025 and only had 30-ish battery cycles. Incredible deal for a computer that was $2k two years ago
Nice find, AS USUSAL! I recently picked up a 2023 Macbook M2 Pro 14 inch 12 Core CPU, 19 Core GPU, 1TB SSD w/ AppleCare+ 10/26/26 for $850 on FB Marketplace ... amazing laptop:, upgraded from 2015 MBP 15" Maxed out Retina (once a KING) Thanks for great content!
Luke, try to pull the dents on the lid like they do with cars. The pressure from the lid might be what is causing the low light issue as the LED panel might be prevented illuminating the screen by the dent.
For context, 3 months later, the M1 Pro 2021 14 inch model with 16/512 spec is going for $1038 on Amazon (renewed, excellent condition) whereas the cheapest in stock 14 inch Macbook Pro (M3, only 8/512) at Best Buy is $1199. If your budget is that $1200 new model, you can even get a 16 inch 2021 M1 Pro model, 16/512 also, for $1129. The deals are out there, but as more M4 models get into the hands of people who want them, more of these M1/M2 models will show up for the rest of us to afford. I'll keep my C2D 2010 model for awhile, it's been fun so far and I want to see how far I can push it.
Thanks! This just confirms what I already knew. The M1 MBP is an amazing laptop! For years, I've upgraded my iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods every three years, but not this time. Even though it's been three years now, my current 16/500 M1 MBP isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
I would check if screen is good after detaching from lid. Maybe it is just a pressure mark from bend lid. Maybe some hammering from inside lid could solve that and then put back display into lid
Definitely got a good deal.. About 12 months ago B&H was selling off Top of the Line M1 MBP M1 Max 16in units with 4TB of storage and 64 gigs of ram for about half of apples heavily taxed unit (2200 v North of 4K). Thats why I have one now. If I could have found this one at the time I may have been tempted to get it instead... I really dont need all that horsepower but I do like it...
I just got a 2020 MacBook Pro 13 in M1 256 storage and 16 RAM for $600 on BackMarket. Haven’t had any problems but will definitely have the hardware inspected like you showed.
open box bestbuy is good choice, i bought m2 pro pristine condition for 1330 plus tax, zero use of battery no dents cant beat that deal but no box included
I scored this same model, though the 1TB version, at Best Buy for $1099 (refurbished) last week. And not only is it in nearly pristine condition, outside of a minor ding in the border, it has 99% battery health as well. Like you I am also a bit surprised at how much these things have depreciated, but I’m also not mad about it… Especially since the machine ended up only costing me $275 because BB offered $825 in trade-in value for my 14” model of the same machine.👏🏼
I've had my 16/1TB M1 Pro since 2021, and repairability is this laptop's biggest issue. My original display went out, and it cost $800 to replace it at the Apple Store. Also, something that I've noticed with the first and second displays is that near the hinges, the metal starts caving in, and the screen becomes misaligned. I'm not sure if it's a widespread issue, but it's happened to me twice.
I bought the then new 16” 2020 M1 MBP base model in the 1st week of January 2021 on a purchase return discount (~$2,150). I have used it ever since with a great experience. I would buy it again, though I love the 15” air form factor. I have not bought an M2 or M3 because there’s little difference for my use. I did get an external SSD caddy that runs wicked fast and when I get 40-50Gb in my temp drive, I move it to the external HD. That keeps my SSD at about 300GB of 512GB used. It’s such a great machine the M4 Pro will have to be something extra to replace it.
Still happy with my M1 Max Macbook Pro. Might upgrade when the M5 comes out. I had my old Macbook Pro from 2014 before I got the M1. I don't upgrade too often. I would be interested in an iMac with a larger screen if they introduced one. I have a 2019 27" iMac currently with Core i9 and 64GB.
I'd love to see you try and fix that screen lid. Maybe some suction cup to undo the dent? I believe there are car repairing kits to do such things. I understand this isn't risk free, but you can try and then it will be a really cheap macbook pro in semi-perfect condition.
As an owner of a 14" MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro and 32GB of RAM, I see zero reason to buy anything else at the moment. It's a great value for the performance and if these are going for under USD$1,000 now that's going to be hard to beat for a while.
6:10 guessing off of dosdude1’s video it would be more easier to just use blank nands when upgrading your storage as well you can configure it to be more than 1tb but also it will program them all in dfu mode if they were all blank
There was a time a MacBook held its value for years. No longer, but unless you’re into the latest/‘greatest,’ an M1 at a discount price will do the job with [the same] style and still excellent performance. It’s a win-win, keeping an old M1 MacBook Pro (like me), or buying a used M1.
The cycles of the battery charge mean how many times it was actually charged. If it’s left on the charger you’ll have low numbers which means you could have a bad battery.
Honestly, this is the best MacBook you can buy right now. Great value, great performance. Back-to-school videos should be showing this and not sub $600 windows laptops that will break after 2 years
I just bought an 16" M1 Pro 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD for $800 with only visible defect is evidence previous owner used a keyboard cover when the screen is off and you look for it. It also still has a year plus of AppleCare+.
I wouldn't buy an Apple product full stop because of parts pairing and the fact I can't upgrade it without a ton of work and expense. I would pull it apart and get that dent out cos there's a good chance it will stop the dark spot on the screen which is probably a pressure mark. I repaired an Asus laptop with the same problem, just tapped the dent out and the screen was right as rain again, this was 6 years ago and I still use that laptop today.
just bought one of these for $700 on fbmp and feel obligated to make a vid on what a steal of a deal this was... especially coming from a base M2 mac mini

Yeah, i would, if get this deal I would happily accept it and get my work on it,, and after some time from apple get the display unit change over it, so i won't lose the true tone feature

Bootcamp is absolutely imperative to my IT job and running a half baked ARM version of Windows in Parallels under a subscription is a scam and it only works when it wants to work.
that anker prime hub is going to be my next purchase I am happy they sponsored you @Luke Miani!!!
Love my 16 M1 Pro. I paid top dollar for it at release but even today I think it’s an excellent value if you can find a clean one used or refurbished.
Try a paintless dent removal tool to pull the dents out, might fix the dark spots
Watching this on my 2021 16" MB Pro. I think I'm going to keep it for awhile!
Bad deal when it's 100 extra for a non damaged system but over 400 to repair and loose features
Nice find, AS USUSAL! I recently picked up a 2023 Macbook M2 Pro 14 inch 12 Core CPU, 19 Core GPU, 1TB SSD w/ AppleCare+ 10/26/26 for $850 on FB Marketplace ... amazing laptop:, upgraded from 2015 MBP 15" Maxed out Retina (once a KING)
Thanks for great content!
thank you for the video helped me pull the trigger on the M1
Luke, try to pull the dents on the lid like they do with cars. The pressure from the lid might be what is causing the low light issue as the LED panel might be prevented illuminating the screen by the dent.
My 16inch 1TB M1 Pro is still a beast. Don’t see any need to upgrade for a couple of years
For context, 3 months later, the M1 Pro 2021 14 inch model with 16/512 spec is going for $1038 on Amazon (renewed, excellent condition) whereas the cheapest in stock 14 inch Macbook Pro (M3, only 8/512) at Best Buy is $1199.
@lukemiani
I would - almost - bet that if you unglue the display and carefully hammer the dents flat from the inside it will be near perfect again.
I reckon you're right, but that would certainly be tricky!! I tried to use a suction cub to suck the dent out, but it didn't work LOL
add hot glue sticks like this paintless dent repair tutorials 😂
and break the display while ungluing it...
@@graxxor YOLO
@@lukemiani Perhaps heatgun it first if you’re feeling ballsy. That’s how you dealt with metal reshaping in the olden days
How? He doesn’t need it. So how is he getting a good deal it’s gonna sit up and collect dust
Wow getting Lukes video 2 minutes after upload that is impressive lol
Absolutely yes, since it is 16col i will use it as a workstation with dual monitor setup at home... That darker spot is not a deal breaker for me.
That dark spot would annoy the hell out of me. So for me not worth the 950
I BOUGHT THE 14 AND 16 IN TB MODELS LOVE THEM!! USE THE SUCTION CUP FOR THE DENT IN THE LID .....IJS
In some situations it is absolutely worth it if the "damage" is minimal and the price is right.
I'd love to see you try and fix that screen lid. Maybe some suction cup to undo the dent? I believe there are car repairing kits to do such things. I understand this isn't risk free, but you can try and then it will be a really cheap macbook pro in semi-perfect condition.
Could the dark mark be caused by pressure on the back of the screen because of the dent? Could be an easy and cheap fix? Best wishes, Colin.
OMG 55 seconds to render a 5 minute 4K video, maybe it's time to get a third macbook LOL
My M1 Pro has held up quite nicely and is very capable to this day with few problems! Heartily recommended!
Maybe you can pull the dent out with a suction cup or something. I'm sure it's pressing on the screen.
I like the millisecond “that’s what she said” caption that popped up 😂
As an owner of a 14" MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro and 32GB of RAM, I see zero reason to buy anything else at the moment.
I try to repair that indent with succion tools or some realy sticky thinks like strong adhesive tape, and hope that display issue is fixed 🤔
I heard that m4 generation has updated video encoders
Luke: ...oh we've a bit of a dented in the lid here...
Seller: yeah it's me
Bought an m1 for 600-ish
It's been working perfectly fine so far
I am now balls deep in the apple ecosystem
Very thought provoking video.
I think your video shows the 1200 M1 Pro without damage is the best value given how much better it is than M2 air and how much more m3 pro is.
Waiting for m4 pro - it will phenomenal
Honestly, this is the best MacBook you can buy right now. Great value, great performance. Back-to-school videos should be showing this and not sub $600 windows laptops that will break after 2 years
I bought a 14" M1 Pro 16GB/512GB in basically unused condition with box and all for $1100 and I love it!
It’s a good deal if you aren’t doing visual work that needs the screen to be undamaged.. I’d take it for music 😍
I just bought an 16" M1 Pro 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD for $800 with only visible defect is evidence previous owner used a keyboard cover when the screen is off and you look for it. It also still has a year plus of AppleCare+.
I think what those graphs really show is how much they hobbled the Air
You can get a $900 16inch 16gb M1 Pro on best buy. When I got mine it only had a small dent on the bottom and works perfectly.
I'd still buy the Air because that dent and the shade on the screen would drive me nuts even if the performance is better
You can try a dent puller for cars to take out the dent. not a bad deal.
I would use the money allocated for repairs to buy a comparable external display and use the Mac as a headless machine.
just bought one of these for $700 on fbmp and feel obligated to make a vid on what a steal of a deal this was... especially coming from a base M2 mac mini
Once again Luke proves why he is the best Fruit company channel because he doesn't merely yack about what is coming next - he actually advances interesting content that helps people NOW! Good video, Luke!
My OCD would go crazy looking at those dent's. I couldn't do it.
is the M1pro vs M4 pro video done yet?
I got my 14 inch MBP 1tb 16 core gpu one in the spring and I love it so much, although I spent like 1800 euro for that much more than just 1k$. But I must say I doubt I need any upgrades in couple of years now. Surprisingly playing games on mac is also quite alright wit crosover and it works well for ffxiv too. Overall was a good purchase!
Yeah, i would, if get this deal I would happily accept it and get my work on it,, and after some time from apple get the display unit change over it, so i won't lose the true tone feature
I'm guessing the dent in the screen caused the different light diffusing layers of the backlight to squish and not work as well as they should.
