- June 3, 1990 - Detroit Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double in his team's series ending 93-74 Game 7 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Thomas finished with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 11 assists in all. The Pistons did the bulk of their damage in the second quarter when they shot 14-of-17 from the field and outscored Chicago 31-14.
Michael Jordan narrowly finished with a triple-double as well, scoring 31 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, and delivering 9 assists in the loss.
1989-90 served as the third consecutive season the Bulls were eliminated by the Pistons. Chicago would end that strike the following season, sweeping Detroit in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals and essentially ending the Pistons' Bad Boys era.

You’re right. Thomas, and his pistons beat Jordan and his Bulls three times. 88-90, but when Jordan and the Bulls finally got Thomas and his pistons…they swept their asses. Once the Bulls started winning…they won six of eight championships. Not bad!

The transition of power from the Celtics to Pistons to Bulls in the Eastern Conference in the 1980s into the 1990s was something to behold. All teams who would have gotten to an extra NBA Finals without the other overtaking then.
You forget the Sixers who were the big team in the east before Boston overtook them. Those two teams had quite the battles in the early to mid 80s. Philly broke thru in 83 but easily could've been in Finals several more times and likely won at least in 81.
Those bad boy Piston teams were some of the greatest of all time

All John Stockton had to do was win his conference title, something he failed 4 times doing.
Stockton couldn't even wins the Sisters of the Poor Conference title.
His 84 playoffs against the Knicks(Bernard king) was on a level I've never seen any of the others play at. Really I think the only ppl I've seen play that level was bird magic MJ, Kobe, curry, and bron. And that was at their absolute best. Really him and Bernard going back and forth reminded me of Steph and bron from I think the 2016 finals, mighta been a different year but bron and Steph were both ridiculous.

This took place in my final week in West Germany back in June 1990.
I had my barracks all to myself my final month in the military.
I recorded this game and the first 3 against Portland before I shipped my belongings back to the states.
Game 4 against Portland the day before I left Germany and Game 5 was my final day in the military.

Isiah Thomas was the General George Patton of basketball. He knew how to the brute force of the Bad Boys to beat the crap out of you. Jordan didn't stand a chance. The only reason he was left off the Dream Team is that all the other pro ballers were ashamed a guy 5-11 tall could beat them just by willing his team to greatness.

When you talk about the greatest players in NBA history like Magic, Jordan and Bird you have to talk about Isiah because he beat them all and he dominated the league in the late 80's. He had the ability to take over a game like Jordan did but he was smarter and always a step ahead of everybody he was even a step ahead of the NBA itself. Isiah changed the game man. Greatest leader of all time, quickest, best ball handler, best PG of all time, in my opinion. I'll take Isiah over Magic although Magic was special but Magic had Kareem and Worthy and Stockton had the Mailman. Isiah had a deep team full of castaways like Laimbeer and Mahorn and young rookies like Rodman and Sally. Isiah was the leader and there identity was the Bad Boys. They were mentally and physically tough but more mentally like Isiah and they followed his lead. Isiah is a legend man.

It was actually Isiah who was bitter towards Jordan because A) Jordan was a much better player and B) Jordan was the most revered b-baller in Chicago, which is Isiah's home town.

the P's had their 4- year run (basically 1987-1991) as a serious force and did it without lots of dunking, slashing, and alley-ooping. They did it off jump shots, lay ins, and concrete defense.

There is one reason why Michael Jordan has nightmares 30 plus years later about Isiah Thomas.
The FILM shows MJ struggled to lead his team to victory when he had to go head to head with either fundamental Isiah Thomas or playground legend Isiah Thomas.
Isiah Thomas could get the best out of limited skilled players like John Salley, Dennis Rodman or Bill Laimbeer while MJ couldn't do the same with Brad Sellers, Craig Hodges or John Paxson.
MJ and the Bulls SWEPT them whilst they were back to back champs the very next season 😂

If you watch the highlights of this game, you would truly understand why Isiah Thomas is not only a generational talent but one of the greatest NCAA and NBA champions of ALL TIME.

If you want perfect point guard play and passing, look closely.
But what was always overlooked was his outstanding team and individual defense, whether it was forcing a double team, his on the ball defense and his ability to rotate on switches to turn defense into easy offensive scoring chances.
Remember, when he left the NBA he was 3rd all time in assists and 5th all time in steals while playing less than 1000 career games.

Isiah RAN championship offenses in high school, college, international play and the NBA because HE CREATED shots for teammates whether it was in transition or a half court set.

If he did those things for NY, LA or Chicago, he would have been in the MVP discussion every year.

What gets lost in the whole Jordan immortalization and how he never saw a Game 7 in the Finals and blah blah blah, is the fact that the Pistons OWNED Jordan for three straight years! It took him four freakin tries to finally get past an aging Pistons team. Those Bad Boys don't get nearly enough credit for repeatedly preventing Mr. Invincible from reaching the Finals. The irony is, The Pistons probably did Jordan's legacy a favor by beating him before the Bulls had a chance to get smoked in the Finals by the Showtime Lakers.

Here is what we know. Until 1991, the Pistons owned Jordan and the Bulls. Jordan couldn't guard Isiah. Jordan bagged on the Pistons in 1991 after the 3rd game of the ECF. The Olympic team gave Jordan full reigns so he called the shots and decided to keep Isiah off the Dream Team out of spite in 1992. After the 1993 season the Pistons were disbanded. Jordan and the Bulls ran rough shod over the league after the Pistons, Celtics and Lakers ran out of steam. From 1984 to 1990, Jordan and the Bulls didn't win squat. In the era that really mattered, during the best competition and before the rules were changed and the league watered down through expansion, Jordan couldn't win 1 trophy.
1989-1990: MJ was the only one who put up a decent resistance to the Detroit Pistons. MJ was the only star player on his team. Despit this, he led the Chicago Bule to the 1989 Eastern Conference Finals.

What really annoys me, are all the comments trying to delegitimatize the Detroit Pistons and their accomplishments; back to back championships, etc. Excuses being made in hindsight. "Pippen's migraine saved the Pistons in 1990". "Pistons had a good head start on the Bulls..." Excuses galore being made. The 4 game sweep in 1991 and the walk-off is the one and only thing people talk about. Oh and by the way, even in the 4 game sweep, Chicago won 2 of those 4 by less than 10 points, 6 and 8 points, respectively, so it's not like Detroit was not competing, and the games themselves were one-sided. Although Chicago was in control of those 4 games, Detroit was competing. In 1990, Pippen's migraine had nothing to do with it. It was a 7 game series. At the time, the format for the CSF and CF, unlike the NBA finals, which was 2-3-2, had a 2-2-1-1-1 format. Pistons had homecourt in 1990. Detroit won the first two at the Palace. Chicago won the next 2 at Chicago Stadium, tying the series 2-2. Game 5 is probably the most crucial and pivotal game of a series that's tied 2-2 after 4 games. The ONLY way Chicago was going to win that series was by taking a game at the Palace. They didn't do that. Detroit decisively won Game 5, 97-83. The Bulls won Game 6 in Chicago, sending it to a 7th game. So, the Bulls were playing a 7th game of a playoff series on the road - and it had been 8 years since the last time a road team had won a Game 7 in any playoff round, and would be 5 more years before it would happen again. A couple of years later, in 1992, 1993, and 1994, Game 5 being a very pivotal and crucial game, with a series tied 2-2, Chicago won in 1992 and 1993 (both against New York) and New York won Game 5 in 1994 (with a controversial call on Pippen, a conversation for another day. Game 5 in the 1994 ECF was won by Indiana, and New York had to win game 6 on the road to close it out at home, which is an exception and not a rule. Detroit didn't have a mere head start on Chicago, the beat them 3 straight years.
Several factors contributed to the Bulls sweep of the Pistons in 1991. Losing 3 straight years, they were happy to get to play them again and they'd want it no other way than their road to the title to have to go through the Detroit Pistons. Isiah Thomas had been injured much of that season. He missed the All-Star game. So, he wasn't quite the player he had been a year and 2 years before. Meanwhile, Chicago only lost 2 playoff games that year, both of which were only by 2 points. Philadelphia beat them 99-97 in Game 3 of the ECSF, and the L.A. Lakers beat them 93-91 in Game 1 of the NBA finals. With a healthy Isiah Thomas, they probably could've pull out a close victory in that series (though Bulls would've won no matter what. Chicago was a mad, determined team in 1991. But the next season, repeating, as they'd learn, was much harder. They survived the Knicks in a 7 game series, lost 2 to Cleveland in the ECF, and blew leads against Portland in the NBA finals, so they didn't understand what it took to go back to back.
Pistons also had similar issues, as mentioned above that the Lakers had against them in 1989. Key injuries, and of course the Lakers got swept in 1989. Oh and by the way, I hated the Pistons too. I was mad when Chicago lost the 1989 series.
4-game sweeps seem one-sided, but the Pistons played the Bulls tighter, still competing, only losing two of those four game by 6 and 8 points, respectively. If I were the uploader of this video, I would delete every comment that delegitimizes the Detroit Pistons and the accomplishments.

as a chicagoan who lived and breathed bulls from 84 til i moved away in 1996....one of the happiest days of my life was the game 4 sweep in Detoit/91. Even beating Magic and the LAL in 5 did not match beating the miserable Pistons. HOWEVER, I thank them so much in retrospect. When the dynasty was being challenged by thuggery by the 2 Davis's, Miller and Schempf in Inidana, by Ewing, Starks, Mason and Xavier in New York...and by Mourning and Riley in Miami....I told my fellow Bulls fans in Chicago who were worried that the Bulls might be out-toughed......"Calm down, they are not the Bad Bays, we'll be okay"......so thank you Bad Boys, for making Chicago Bulls one of the toughest, and most willful team in NBA history.
I personally think the real reason Jordan doesn’t like Isaiah Thomas, is because Isaiah got the better of him in many games, like this one. The walkout was just the final straw. I think Isaiah was better playmaker at this point in their careers. He was a better passer, and better court general.

It's because the Jordan made the NBA rich. He made ESPN wealthy as well. Instead of basketball being about teams and games it became about superstars and highlights. It turned from a team game into an individual game. A physical game into a ballet recital. The funny thing was that this was the first year that The Bulls used the Triangle Offense. It clearly was working until Game 7, when Pippen caught his stress migraine. This is why the Pistons still won: they were mentally tougher than The Bulls at this point. For Pippen and the Bulls, this was the biggest game of their lives. For the Pistons, it was just time to go to work. The Bulls needed one more year to toughen up and be ready.

Amazing, I'm one of the few who seemed to catch that...
