    This is the side by side comparison we all needed. I love these Save the Ocean models, and aim to have both in the collection in due time. The Turtle is probably my favorite overall Seiko diver, and I'm working on collecting multiple colorways.

    I had a really hard time deciding between Blue Whale and White Shark, but in the Samurai rather than the Turtle (not a fan of the pillow...). Originally I bought the Blue Whale, but was underwhelmed when I received it. I found it to be “too blue”. Monochrome. The photo that inspired me to order made dial look like light, tropical blue at the top, gradating to deep blue and then black. Like the ocean getting progressively deeper and darker. But the dial is not really like that - it is deep blue and then black. Very little gradation. I still liked it, but did not love it. It sat around in the box and after a while I ordered the Great White to compare. The Blue Whale started to grow on me, particularly the gunmetal bezel and crown, but the imaginative details of the Great White Shark - wave pattern, fin, shark tail second hand, and bezel insert with contrast and texture, pushed it over the top. I wear the Great White. Blue Whale is still “like new” in the box. I am going to hold onto it and see what they go for in a few years.

      Thanks for taking the time to share those comprehensive thoughts! I think I am also partial to the Great White myself, as it is overall more versatile in styling and I’ve never been a big fan of dark PVD cases.

    I think both have really strong points.
    The Whale has a really cool contrast between the darker bezel and crown; a feature I really like.
    I also like the needle/lollipop seconds hand more than the arrow. I really like the fade-to-black dial.
    The Shark has a dial I appreciate a little more in terms of "fun color" and I really really like the waves. When you look at the watch straight on, you almost get a sense of depth as you're looking at waves in the distance. I also think small and very subtle details, like the shark fin, really give the dial that extra oomph that I tend to appreciate (I am glad it's VERY subtle and doesn't distract). The bezel insert has grooves and the font is recessed and not just "printed" on. I also prefer the Dark grey 20 minute portion on the insert more than the similar color on the Whale. I wish the crown or at least the bezel had a darker tone like on the Whale though.
    Either one is such a good looking piece. What's enjoyable about these is that they have such a great balance of looks and and utility that they could fit into many occasions. These are the types of dials that make it enjoyable to actually look down to see the time. Catching different lighting and reflections, they have enough variation on the dial to keep it interesting.
    I also think there is a little hint of plain "hey, let's have fun" to these watches that many watches DON'T capture the same way.

    • @PerthWAtch

    It's a hard call the dials are very well done. The Blue Whale, even with the subdued black elements, pops a little more. That said the Great White, has an almost "Easter egg " hidden element charm to it. I just wish either came in that old school iconic SKX case format.

    Thanks for the comparative review. They are both great Turtles. I own these two watches and love them, each more than the other at different times 😊.The White Shark has a few more subtle differences on the bezel: the font is slightly less bold (the only Turtle featuring this font, as far as I can tell) and it also has a textured bezel insert (concentric circles similar to a vinyl record).

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  4 года назад

      Thanks for sharing those details, very astute of you to note that subtle azurage pattern on the bezel insert, I didn’t actually notice that! Can’t honestly tell the difference in the font though, despite looking back closely at the pictures again.

    Both of these are nice. However, i find other versions more to my liking. I have the SRP777 (Black dial), as well as the Padi Version. The Turtle is a great watch, really nice design.
