    I love the “double meaning” aspect of the ride’s theming. Copperhead refers to literal copperhead snakes that have infested the area, but it’s also a term relating to moonshine, which Granny Byrd has secretly making in addition to her jam. And then the two meanings are combined with Granny taking advantage of the snakes to keep people from exploring the farm. I love how the jam is called “Rise & Shine”. Yeah, that’s totally not suspicious. If any of you don’t understand why she’s hiding her moonshine, it’s because the story takes place in the 1930s, when moonshine was illegal.

    I think Mack’s are supposed to be a little more graceful and fun with their elements and less about pure intensity, so going in expecting a Mack to be comparable to an intense intamin blitz like maverick is basically setting yourself up to be disappointed.

      I agree with that sentiment. If the launches were faster/more forceful, you wouldn’t get the hang time on the inversions. It’s got that in spades, and I wouldn’t want to change that!

      @@erikhjortsater5461 Blue Fire has probably the most forceful launch on a Mack coaster and even though it's not as intense as a hydraulic launch it still accelerates quick enough to make it a great launch. By the way Blue Fire celebrates its 10th birthday on Thursday, which also means 10 years of Mack megacoasters!

      @Fancyflashdrive Roller coaster enthusiast Because its a play on words and also part of the "mystery of the barn".... The entire moonshine thing is a secret until you enter the barn.
      You are acting like a 3 year old who is only able to expect exactly what it sais on the box and is overwhelmed any deeper meaning that requires even the slightest bit of thought...
      I quite like this approach to theming - its much better than just calling it "snake" and then have it look like "a snake" - i mean how boring would that be?

    • @scottwilson4259
      @scottwilson4259 5 лет назад +11

      @Fancyflashdrive Roller coaster enthusiast The entire top of a still is called copperhead. Did you notice that the snake in the sign was made of copper tubbing. Granny grows lots of corn to make the moonshine. The fields are full of copperheads snakes. It is a twist on the fields full of copperheads and the copperhead part of the still. That is why the snake in the sign is made of copper tubing. You can see the where the pipes fit together.

    Having grown up around the Charlotte area, I can remember the days in which Paramount owned the park..When I was around the age 18 (2006), I clearly remember the park being a laughing stock when classifying it as an amusement park. I was very happy when I heard the news that Cedar Fair had purchased the park and I told people that Carowinds would make a come back...I am sssoooo glad that rides like the intimidator, fury 325, and now this one has been added to park. They definitely bring Carowinds back on the map as a legitimate roller coaster park!!!

    Many times moonshiners would put out danger or warning signs to keep people out of their area. The copperhead is a pretty fierce little snake and known to strike even when not provoked (I've crossed them many times while hunting). Moonshiners were also known to set traps that would include snake pits and other "elements". As a South Carolina native, the theming makes perfect sense. But I definitely see your point if you didn't have a SC/NC history lesson prior to visiting. Great review though. I really enjoy this ride.

    I love this coaster and I'm glad you compared it to Cheetah Hunt because I have too, in that it's a thrill coaster that doesn't exist to please hard-core intensity enthusiasts but the general public, and I think that's perfectly valid. It tries to be fun more than it tries to be intense and succeeds in that endeavor.
    I'm not sure you entirely understand the theme but it's not an easy one to understand unless you know your history on prohibition, moonshining, and what goes into it. I argue that it's one of the more uniquely themed coasters in the world. That being said there is a launch coaster across the sea that's also about alcohol lol.

    5:26 This was explained in an interview on Media Day. Copperhead is a backwoods term used for distillery machinery (where moonshine is made), and Granny uses the threat of copperhead snakes to ensure that no one comes near her moonshine factory.
    I can't believe that I was ALSO at Carowinds during Passholder Preview, and worst of all I never got to meet you guys! When I joined the line, it was about a 75 minute wait (I stopped just in front of the first cattlepen switchback). I agreed with basically everything you said in this review; even down to the little things like addressing the bunny hill before the brake run, how the people comparing it to Maverick were setting themselves up for disappointment, and the 8.5/10 score! Don't get me wrong - Copperhead Strike is a really fun little ride that would make a great "first looping coaster" for coasterfans in training, but it is nowhere near as wild and insane as Maverick. I wasn't disappointed with this coaster, but I also wasn't pleasantly surprised either.

    Hello from South Carolina!!
    We just rode it this past Monday August 30th 2019. I loved it! It was very original. We live an hour from the park. I agree about the hang time and the first loop really does feel like it won't make it. I agree 100% launch time should be faster. But it was still pretty great! And the comments on the themes for the ride were almost identical to what I was saying going up in line. How detailed, yet having nothing to do with snakes! I thought maybe the look of the coaster gave it it's name. We rode it 4 times. The way it inverts in the very beginning is super original as I have never ridden a coaster like that! The barn and the granny video absolutely surprised me as well.
    I read and kept up with the build of the coaster since we saw construction begin last year when we went. I really enjoyed it! I think you're dead on in most of your review!

    I rode it 8 times in a row last night with my fast lane plus pass because it is a 2-3 hr wait but I loved it! Never been on a launch coaster coaster before and I'm facing my fear of coasters. The airtime is amazing especially the hangtime after the 2nd launch. The hills catch you off guard how fast they damn near try to throw you out the ride. By the way, the snakes protect grandma's secret recipe so they chasing you is what the theming means. I will definitely be riding it again

    Speaking as someone from North Carolina, the theming is something that a North Carolinian will understand. It is sort of combining two themes but really isn't. Its about moonshining or "running" ie the people who transported the moonshine. Google moonshine runners. The copperhead strike is an amalgamation. Copperhead is both a reference to the snake, which is native to the area, and the copper stills that are used for making moonshine. Considering Cedar isn't a North Carolina company, they did a good job understand the culture of Appalachia and incorporating it into the ride.

    Actually, the theme (and not just the theming) is, IMO, quite possibly the best in the Cedar Fair chain. It’s creative and clever in the way it pulls from local history and works on different levels for the kids and the adults.

    • @CoasterStudios
      @CoasterStudios  5 лет назад

      StamfordBridge my problem is the theme just seems to be overly complex. A theme shouldn't be this hard to figure out. I've heard multiple explanations but they all slightly differ. I think a theme should be simple enough that you can explain it to a child and they'll understand it.

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 5 лет назад +1

      Coaster Studios Fair enough. I’m the opposite, at least to the extent that, as I said, I like that a child can’t get it - or not all of it. The child thinks there’s a mystery about Granny’s shed involving snakes and it means we have to run. The adult gets that it’s really about stumbling upon an illegal still. To me, that’s awesome.

    • @timk987
      @timk987 5 лет назад +1

      @@StamfordBridge I'm with you on this one. The copperhead mystique is intertwined with bootleggers and/or shine runners as a part of Appalachian history. Love the simple child/more complex adult theme. Using Taylor's logic, I would even argue that as a stand alone theme it's better than anything in Disney or Universal. While the theming can be appreciated by anyone for craftsmanship or shear grandeur, all those attractions themes are only appreciated by the fans of the IP it represents. For example, I've never read or seen anything Harry Potter. I'm sure I'd be blown away if I stepped into that whole Hogwarts or Diagon area, wouldn't have a clue about what any of it meant but could only appreciate it for the theme. All that being said, growing up at Cedar Point, Geauga Lake, and Kings Island, I've always been more about the actual ride than it's theme...And I appreciate that Taylor focused on the ride and didn't get hung up on the theme. Looking forward to giving it a go, but not necessarily rushing to Carowinds to do so.

    The "Copperhead" part of the name is in reference to "Copperhead Road" which was how moonshiners referred to their smuggling route back when it was illegal (or something like that, correct me if I'm wrong). The moonshine theme isn't overtly stated, but it makes sense when you think about that context.

    I see the theming to this coaster as a local familiarity thing of the backwoods Carolinas. The theming being all the junk in the yard and shacks etc. Copperhead snakes are pretty common in this area, especially in messy backwoods areas like these. It’s also duel themed with the moonshine story. Using the snake as a reference to the copper tubing of the distillery. Moonshine being another backwoods Carolina thing also ties in to the over all theme. I was great being able to see the theming throughout the cue for the first time and was really impressive which gave a great first impression. One of the most fun rides I have gotten to ride.
    P.S. The front seat of this ride is not the best seat due to it throws you over the hills causing you to lean forward into the lap bar which isn’t too comfortable. I recommend the middle for best experience 👌

      Smokey Valley Project It plays up more stereotypical elements of Appalachia but there is always a dash of truth in stereotypes.
      Most didn’t have junky homes. They had small family farms. People making quality moonshine did it in an out of the way location that was not easily found by federal regulators, police or thief’s.
      One of the best indicators of a good place to set up a still is a large amount of water weeds in ice cold head waters of streams. That means there is an ample amount of limestone around that works as a natural double filtration system, and the colder the water is... the smoother the moonshine is.
      During prohibition there was an explosion of people trying to make moonshine and some did not use the high standards of true tradesmen who had been taught to make moonshine for generations.
      That said, some played up the horror stories to keep people from buying/drinking the moonshine.
      The theming on this is cute and quite obvious to anyone from or familiar with stories from the Blue Ridge Mountains.
      My papaw ran moonshine during prohibition & had to dump a couple A Models in the river.

      I get that they need to play up the Snuffy Smith (the dude that did this video has no idea who that is) bathtub with a shower curtain 🛀 outside to clue some into the theme, because an outdoor well pump, a woman carrying buckets of water from the well to the house, heating them on a wood stove and poring them into wash tub sitting in a kitchen would not get the no running water/indoor plumbing or electricity was ran through the Ridge Mountains until 1965 - 1980s (depend on how far back in the woods you were) point across as quickly.
      Gotta go Beverly Hillbillies

    IMO it's the best overall Layout on a Mack Coaster, it just looks great. And I really like that Color Scheme.

    Excellent review as always. I've been waiting to hear your thoughts on this one because my opinions on this ride have constantly been going up and down and I'm not sure what I think about it since we shared very similar views on coasters I've been excited to hear your thoughts on it. I'll be writing this in June when I take my first ever trip to Carowinds. At first I was underwhelmed by the ride then I got excited because it seems so Compact and filled with ejector are then it looked like maybe there's not as much airtime as I expected. I figured you would have some grateful odor and feel yourself accelerating while going over a hill but seems like that's not the case definitely a bit disappointing

    The moonshine theme is also a nod to "White Lightnin" roller coaster that stood near the spot that copperhead strike is on. There are a couple signs on the ride that are Easter eggs to white lightnin, a spark plug "advertisement" , and another I can not remember off the top of my head. Nice video.

    I had no expectations because it had been a while since I'd been to Carowinds, and I didn't even know about this coaster, and we just went during Scarowinds so it was PITCH BLACK thru most of the ride. I missed a lot of the neat theming, (tho I probably would have missed a bunch of it anyways, since I'm taking the elevator up with my chair.) I had absoultely no idea what kind of coaster I was getting on, so it was entirely a surprise. I enjoyed it at lot. It's not quite as smooth as Fury, which is my favorite, but it has so much charm. The jojo roll certainly was a real surprise, and I thought it might be a launch coaster after that because of the lack of the lift hill, but since, again, it was really dark, all the elements were a real surprise to go thru. I feel like riding coasters at night is such a different experience, and you wind of riding it more with your body and less with your eyes, if that makes sense. I kind of prefer it in many ways.
    So yeah, maybe not my favorite coaster ever, but I enjoyed it a lot. I like being happy surprised.

    I got a rollback on the 2nd launch. There was actually some decent airtime going over the 2nd launch. I'm guessing that's because they had to dial up the acceleration of the launch.

  • @RainbowDemon

    I think it is called Copperhead Strike because there is a moonshine distillery in south Carolina (and Carrowinds is on the edge of the two) called Copperhead mountain distillery. So it’s a fun extra treat for people who live in the twi Carolina’s if they know about the distillery. Almost like an inside joke for locals to enjoy.

    Something unique about this coaster is the shape of the loops. They're old school circular loops instead of the typical clothoid (teardrop) shape. This leads to more intense Gs at the entry and exit of the loop and the slower speed at the top.

    Those low to the ground twist and turns in a mess of track at the end are so much fun at night! You have no clue which direction you’re going in and I just sat there and let the coaster twist me around. The rest of it doesn’t really change in day to night for me but I guess I would say night is better because that lesser intense part of the ride becomes more fun.

    I rode Copperhead Strike this past Sunday, 4/7/19. My 72nd credit. Not too bad for possibly the oldest kid here (58) who grew up before the coaster boom of the 90's. I do have some rare credits (2 Schiff Wild Mouses ,a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop and a Chance Toboggan) and all 17 coasters ever built at my home park, Carowinds (rode Thunder Road the year it opened and the year it closed). Anyway, bullet points on Copperhead Strike:
    * Thought I was going to be dumped on my head during jo-jo roll.
    * 1st Launch was adequate considering 1st loop size.
    * Good hang time on 1st loop.
    * Other hang time moments good, almost like floater air time.
    * Good transitions considering the large amount of track in a small space.
    * Some slight rattle later in the ride.
    * Definitely a unique coaster, an 8.5 or a 9.
    Generally agree with your review, Taylor. I'm nearing coaster retirement age, so Copperhead Strike was plenty intense for me (yes, it is not Maverick). Only coaster left on my bucket list is Steel Vengeance. Spent 2 days at Dollywood last summer, Lightning Rod down both days (I'm sure you can relate, Taylor). I have no plans to go back. Keep up the good work, Taylor.

    I've ridden it nearly 50 times and let me tell you this: They've sped up the launch acceleration. Normally, the train stops accelerating at the base of the first loop, and you can feel when it stops speeding up, but I went yesterday and it stopped accelerating a good 20 feet from the loop. The launch is actually somewhat decent now, and the 2nd launch is also a tad stronger. I recommend riding it again and updating us!
