- This is part 2 of the antique games table restoration project from Trafalgar Castle in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. This difficult furniture restoration comes together with some advanced woodworking skills and careful staining techniques. When we deliver the table to the Castle, we show the interior craftsmanship and architectural details in this fantastic building.

Thank you Scott, it was a pleasure working with you. The Sheriffs table is now back in a prominent place in the Castle after being in storage for 3years. Hopefully it will now last another 150years, but if anything should happen before then we definitely know who to call!

My college, Judson College was started in 1838. It closed in 2021. I love the Gothic style at this woman’s college. I have a parlor set that is the SAME style as the oak game table. I no longer do refinishing. I do love history, and wish I knew the name of the style of the oak table!

I've built custom homes for over 40 years but nothing that could compare to this work of art. I could spend a week in just one room trying to detail the craftsmanship. What got me into the building trades was being able to tour some of the castles in Europe while in the U.S. Army there. I was then and still now wowed by not only the skill but also the patience it took to build these masterpieces. Thank you for the small tour at the end.

What a fabulous, sympathetic restoration you did on this table! Imagine all the conversation held during a game of cribbage or checkers or such played at this table. So much has happened in history, let alone amongst the people who lived, worked and were educated here! The castle is so wonderful, and so tastefully decorated. I wonder will they get you to fill in the broken woodwork along the full length of the bannisters along the staircase. I noticed so many sections missing. There’s another great job for you! Your two videos were so enjoyable and your work on the table was perfect. Putting the large caster in the center of the table base was brilliant. When you brought out the string to check the level of that caster, I immediately thought of my Dad, who used that method for so many things. I’m in my mid-seventies now, but I remember very clearly how my brothers and I would joke, “Get the string!” whenever my Dad started a new project. Thank you for sharing this nice experience.

Absolutely worth every minute I spent watching, rewinding and rewatching. The process of how you chose the correct stain, wow. I took for granted that was the easiest part and quickly learned I have a lot more to learn. The lessons taught in these videos i will use, but I sincerely hope some budding woodworking artist is inspired by your skill, knowledge and attention to detail. The school definitely chose the right man for job.

A lot of work went into restoring that table but I think the results are fantastic. And thanks for the tour of the castle as I love architectural history.

Great work Scott. Allowing scrollwork movement was the right call. Trafalgar Castle was kitted out in the heyday of architectural woodworking. It's a baby though, some of the castles In our area go back 800 years. Thanks for posting.

It always amazes me the work that goes into the building of complex moldings and casements. I went through the governor's house in colonial Williamsburg and it was quite ornate but not to the extent of Trafalgar Castle. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with us. I hope to visit the castle sometime.😊❤
I was lucky enough to spend 6 years of my life living at Trafalgar Castle as a student in the late seventies and early eighties. It was a wonderful experience to live in such a place. I see they have replaced the steps in the main staircase since then. The original steps had the same dark patina as the rest of the staircase. We weren’t allowed to use it; only staff and senior students as I suppose it was weakened by then and they were a bit treacherous. We got to walk down it on prom night when our dates arrived. The octagon table used to be located in the huge bay window in the upper main hall where your tour began and there seems to be a long rectangular table with benches there now. We used to do homework and have meetings at that table and we heard that in the early seventies, a gun and pack of playing cards were found in one of the drawers that was stuck or secret. Sheriff Reynolds was a gambler and lost his fortune and had to sell the Castle to the United Church who turned it into a school. Thank you for preserving the table, you did a beautiful job. I didn’t recognize where it’s placed now. Probably safe from further damage by ruffians like we were!

Thank you for the information Catherine!. I am the current Facility Manager at Trafalgar and I am always looking for tidbits of info like when the stair treads may have been replaced and the locations of furniture during certain eras. Many things in the castle have been moved around over the many years. the octagon table that we call the "Sheriffs table" is currently in the Reception room. we relocated it to that space because we are turning it into an archives room of sorts. we use it for small meetings and interviews etc. and have installed a display cabinet with treasures. we have photos from the late 1800s and early 1900s showing the table in that room as well. This September will be the 150yr Anniversary of the school opening with many events like community BBQ and a 150yr celebration Gala etc. We would love to see any and all friends of Trafalgar and Alumni, please try to stop by!
Wow! You did a fantastic job. That stained glass window with the coats of arms and all the heraldry symbols was fantastic! It was a way of showcasing the family’s genealogy when reading and writing weren’t as common…

Really interesting to see how you ended up using different stains to match the original on the surface vs endgrain! Makes perfect sense that it would absorb differently, but this had never occurred to me.

I have been really enjoying all your videos - even your old ones. I haven't seen many videos of what to do when you have a broken off tenon in chairs and tables etc. I encounter it quite often - and was wondering what you normally do.

Beautiful restoration. And thanks for the tour of this impressive building. Many years ago I was on a team who restored the moldings inside the Québec Parliament. It was hard and tedious work, but I felt proud to contribute at restoring and preserving a part of our Canadian heritage.

It's always amazing to me how much work can go into a single building; one could spend an entire lifetime not just creating these pieces and details in just this one structure in the first place, but an entire career merely maintaining, preserving, and restoring same in still just this one structure. I was separately wondering about the table; I would assume this was commissioned work at the time, and wouldn't something like this include a maker's mark and a date of creation? I do not recall seeing anything of the sort but maybe this is not as common as I assumed (or I just missed it!)? Anyway, a very nice building and a very nice restoration--a pleasure to view in both cases.

It would have been cool if you would have made one of those caster covers for the center caster like the ones for the feet. that way it would have looked like it belonged there. and covered up the caster. Awesome work, really like you chanel.

Awesome 2 part video on this really neat table. Fantastic work! I like seeing how you tackle each issue and hearing you explain the logic behind it. I do have a question, though... I had assumed that the second foot that you turned would have made a perfectly suitable center caster. Is there a specific reason you didn't use it? And the craftsmanship on the millwork and trim in that place is mind blowing. I could look at that all day!
Good question. The center caster was 100% concealed, so no need to add it. I made 2 so I could pick the best one to use... and it gave me an opportunity to test how effective my dust collection prototype is - I measured the dust left behind without dust collection.

A cracking job! If the new castors weren't hidden by the wooden cups could you use some shellac/ stain to tone down the new and shiny metal?
I sometimes use heat to age metal, but that wouldn't work near rubber. If they were visible, I would have chosen different castor wheels. I hope that helps. Scott
Great job you really should look into the Festool ro90 sander. The difference between the Dewalt one you’re currently using and the Festool ro90 is night and day. I had been using Dewalt for 20+ years and then I tried festool and was blown away. Festool is expensive but very well worth it. Stop in a Lee Valley and try one you won’t be disappointed.
