How to Restore Old Stools, Shorten Them, and Remove Paint Drips - a Fixing Furniture Restoration

  • These stools needed a lot of work to restore them. With paint drips and splatters, loose joints, some bad replacement parts, mismatched finish, and two different heights, it took finishing, woodworking, and furniture restoration skills to get these looking similar.
    In a previous repair, the taller stool had two stretchers replaced with dowels that didn't match the design of the stool. I took the stool apart to replace the stretchers but someone added nails to hold the stretchers in place. Finishing nails are hard to remove and I find a mini cats paw (see link below) is the most effective way to pull out finishing nails. I've tried many methods over the years and there's no way to remove a finishing nail without damaging the wood. Fortunately, these nails were on the inside of the stool so the damage was easy to patch and hide.
    Making the new replacement stretchers was more difficult than I anticipated. The tenons were round and on an angle from the stretcher... a woodworking challenge to reproduce. The key was accurate joinery layout and the use of a plug/tenon cutter.
    Once the stool was glued back together again, it was time to shorten it to match the other stool. I used a compound miter saw and a stop block to make quick work of it.
    Matching wood stain can be challenging and this project showed that. While matching the stain for the stretchers was easy, the set of the tall stool was difficult, requiring three applications of stain to get the colour right.

    One of your best videos, IMHO anyway. The way you managed the dowel and angles on the stretcher and the use of the tenon cutter - excellent. I was surprised the stretcher location was the same after trimming the legs on the one stool, lucky? Or were they made in the same factory. Very nice job.

      I'm guessing those were made in the same factory as the dimensions were similar and chamfers were identical.

    I really like seeing how you made two similar stools into a matching pair by replacing stretchers and distressing them and staIning and refinishing them. Great patient work.

    I love this channel. Fixing furniture is a great trade or hobby. And I plan on doing more of this to make a few bucks in retirement.
    It's a valuable skill and the variety of repairs keeps it from getting boring. Nice to see the end result. Very satisfying and keeps good furniture out of the landfill or the woodpile.
    And I like to see the proper way to repair as compared to the hack master jobs lots of people do.
    You have a "deft hand", sir.👍😁

    Excellent result Scotty and no doubt your client was thrilled with it. I love what you do and your obvious craftsmanship but you either work for next to nothing or your clients are going to have some very expensive furniture pieces. Presumably it's the latter. Whenever I look at your videos I get a little envious of your magnificent collection of tools and equipment.

    Round tenons at an angle is something very common with wheelwrights (? the guys building wooden wheels) as the hub and the rim of the wheels are not in the same plan, so there is an angle at the end of the stokes where they join the rim. I have watched Dave demonstrate it countless times on his channel Engles Coach Shop.

    A simpler way of adding the texture after you had sanded the stretcher to shape would be to wrap 50-grit sandpaper over the top edge,, and tap it in with a soft-face mallet.
    No visible repeating pattern, and a LOT less time.

    Have you thought about using a magnet to detect those random finishing nails?

    • @FixingFurniture
      @FixingFurniture  29 дней назад

      Not magnets as it would be hard to detect, but someone suggested buying a metal detector. I haven't looked into that yet but the more I see it, the more potential it has to pay off.

    Modern finishing nails have glue on them - I found I can pull them much easier if I preheat them with a soldering iron - probably the glue liquifies then?

    • @FixingFurniture

      I haven't encountered that in furniture yet. I've seen it in framing nails though.

    I wonder how the original furniture maker created the angled round tenants. A plug cutter seems to be a modern tool. Any thoughts?

    • @FixingFurniture
      @FixingFurniture  Месяц назад

      I would guess it was either a machine tenon cutter or a hand tenon cutter. If you search for a hand tenon cutter, you'll see these are fairly simple tools.

    What's the difference between paint, stain and finish?

    • @FixingFurniture
      @FixingFurniture  Месяц назад +1

      Paint is not transparent and provides protection to the wood. A finish is usually transparent and helps protect the wood. Stain is used to add colour to the wood. Does that help? Scott
