Ep. 76 Amazing RESTORATION of a MASSIVE Antique Desk

  • I found this old roll top desk on Facebook Marketplace several months ago, along with the matching file cabinet. These pieces were built in the early 1900s and used in the Wisconsin State Capitol Building for many years. The pieces were built using mostly white oak. I will attempt a simple restoration by polishing the brass drawer pulls, and applying oak restore-a-finish to the rest of the piece. This is one of my favorite furniture pieces, and I look forward to using it in my shop for many years. Thank you for your support. Barry

What a honey of a desk, and chair too! I'd have given my right arm for that desk while I was still practicing law. The oak is luscious. Hooray on the trike! I can see why it's so much better on snow and ice with 3 legs instead of 2 on a bike. It looks like fun for grown-ups. The Wisconsin capitol is a work of art; I had no idea it has that level of detail and workmanship. You hit paydirt on the desk and chair! Cheers from Oklahoma!!!

Such a beautiful piece. Thanks for not painting it. I always think about not only the history of the piece, but the trees that were used, the people all along the way, who played a part in making it - and you mentioned that! Thanks for the tour of your capital building. Its beautiful.

Glad you were able to bring it back to use. The fire of 1904 also destroyed the remains of Old Abe which oddly enough died because of smoke from an earlier capital fire. Theodore Roosevelt was happy to see the remains of Old Abe as he had studied about him in school.

A good idea to keep the desk, Barry. You found it, you care about it and you have made it look like new. It is worth more to you than any Jo Blow who may want to just pass it on for a quick profit. It belongs with you! Your reverence of all that it stands for makes you alone, worthy of its guardianship. When the time comes, heaven hopes it’s along time off, make sure it goes to someone as worthy of it as yourself.
Gosh I love hearing your narratives of such pieces. And, So good to see companies giving you a chance to try out their gear for you to share all the good points of each item. Lucky you! But they couldn’t find a better ambassador! Thanks again for a great and interesting video. I can’t wait for more.🦘❤️

My late father purchased one of these, a massive construction with many drawers and cubby holes
I have no idea why he got it other than an appreciation in its construction. It sits in my mum's house to this day but, as you note Barry, this size of furniture is far too large to comfortably sit in many rooms, especially our smaller UK homes. I guess when I inherit it I'll try a sale. Thanks for showing us the historical context. Hope all is well. David.

Barry, your posts are always so interesting. Thoroughly enjoy them. I too am a lover of roll-top desks. As a child, we had a solid oak rool-top desk my Dad found at an auction in the mid-1950s. Unfortunately when we moved from this particular town we could not move it with us. Even at a young age, 8, I was heartbroken. It took me well into my 60s to find a roll-top desk I wanted. Fortunately, it came to me through a dear friend. It is not solid oak, but it very much resembles the one of my childhood. It makes me happy and that it what matters. Thank you for your most interesting post about your roll-top desk and the awesome chair you found for it. Even though I live in Oregon, I truly enjoyed your home state history lesson. Thank you!

Great job, Barry. I have always wanted a roll top desk, even though they are impractical for use with a desktop computer. I did see a modern custom roll top years ago at the Art Fair on the Square that would accommodate a monitor and computer, but as a poor graduate student I couldn't afford the over $5000 price tag. Later I did get my Dad's old flat top 'aircraft carrier' of a desk, and it is the centerpiece of my home office. And I loved the capitol tour! I haven't gone down and wandered through in years, and I really should do so.

You do such a great job of educating us as well as entertaining us. I know that you said that you didn't much care who owned the desk, but there is a practical side to knowing.
The desk of the Chief Justice was 4 feet and had a roll top, important desk for an important man. Since there was a strict social class system those many years ago, size would have mattered. This desk at 6 feet and well appointed with all the pigeon holes, a very important man used this desk.
The price point depends on provenance. You could have a desk worth a few hundreds or several thousands perhaps in the tens of thousands.
There are more than likely photos of all the governors in their office at their desks. It would be worth it to find out who the governor or governors were, especially for insurance coverage.
Personally, I would find out everything, write it down and sell the desk. If you don't want to sell and don't want to keep it, donate it to a museum.

Beautiful desk, and I particularly enjoyed the story. I listened to the premier while at work, and am watching it now at home in the evening. The desk's story is fascinating, as well as a look at its original home, giving an idea of how it was used, and perhaps what decisions may have been made there. Additionally, in the craftsmanship in the piece and care and pride taken when building it. I agree, it doesn't warrant a full restoration, plus some of the age marks are part of its history and beauty. Great Job, great story, great video. I really enjoyed this one. Thank you.

My family and I do research at the Wisconsin historical society every week if you need help using their system or anything! I mostly do volunteer work at the veterans museum, but most museum people kinda know each other if you end up needing other help or specific knowledge.

    Bonjour d'Occitanie (France)
Très belle réussite pour la restauration (plutôt nettoyage) de ce magnifique "bureau cylindre" (c'est le nom de ce meuble en France).
Merci pour la visite guidé du Capitole du Wisconsin.

Barry I don’t think there’s anyone more deserving than you to have / own this beautifully restored desk. I for one love your time and effort that you put into your research and educating us about your pieces of furniture you care for. I’ve never been to a state capital except for DC. Yours is MAGNIFICENT and thank you so much for sharing. I love your content and I hope you’ll always tell us the history behind things you come across. Subscriber from SC 🇺🇸👍🏼❤️

As a European who’s very unlikely to be able to visit Wisconsin I very much appreciated the tour and the narration combined with a “rebuild” of an historical piece. I applaud 👏🏻 Thank you

Amazing and very opulent Capitol building.
    Thanks for sharing.
Extremely great quality desk you got there.
IUS restor-a-finish whole lot on pieces that are in great shape and not in need of a full restoration.
Why you following up with the Howard feed-n-wax. Helps protect restor-a-finish. 👍

I’m always looking forward to your RUclips presentation. My husband has a room-top and we love it. The Capital is breath taking, especially the domus and the marble everywhere!

Beautiful! And thank you for the tour. I've been to Madison many times, but I can't manage all those steps and walking around the capitol building myself.
