This project had me frustrated many times, and I still don't feel like it is complete, but I am grateful for all the hard lessons learned along the way. Thank you for all your support! Barry
Missed your content Barry. That piece looks so much better. To the "artist " the piece never looks complete. To the layman, it's appears as perfection.
You are in that weird place of your skills journey. Seeing where you've been, but seeing how much further there is to go. Give yourself grace because you are more talented than you give yourself credit for. This piece is beautiful.
Well said! @Betharoot! I totally agree!! That was quite the ugly duck and it no longer is. I don’t think you ever stop learning lessons and skills unless you decide to. It’s in all things raising children, crops, farm animals, flowers....fixing cars, tractors, roads, houses, furniture......always more lessons! Barry is really a wonderful, creative soul who has an enviable ability to learn. I am always impressed by that!
He is super talented. I quit refinishing painted furniture decades ago, just couldn't deal with cleaning all the paint out of the wood. He did an absolutely fabulous job on this furniture. Seeing some of the projects he has done, and his skills, made me subscribe.
Ok not going to lie I was NOT expecting the final results after watching the video and seeing the numerous frustrations for you Barry BUT WOW what a result it is absolutely beautiful far far more beautiful than I could ever have imagined it being. You worked magic with this one Barry 🥰🤗
I am a coppersmith (self taught and RUclips videos). Several weeks a go a friend wanted something unique made. I normally etch but this had to be different. So, again RUclips helped. I learned how to nickel plate. Plating is very simple and the plating solution can be made with normal household items.
Absolutely beautiful Barry. I am convinced this peice was an early 50s blonde Asian influence buffet. From about 1950-54 blonde Asian style was popular along side of Tikki furniture. The handles are heavy and chunky and matched original base that seemed to anchor the peice firmly to the floor. You did an excellent job on it and what a difference the Howard's wax made in the overall beauty of the walnut.Thank you for posting love, love your work and honesty.
WOW, wow, wow the cabinet doesn't even look like the same cabinet you started with. You turned it in to a magnificent beauty! Well done Barry! Very impressive work! 😊
I love that you don't judge the original refinisher for painting it, when half way through the project you're considering throwing it out yourself. It definitely helps you understand why they decided it wasn't worth more than a coat of spray paint. 😀 But I'm glad we got to see you do a restoration. The end result is beautiful. (Personal preference - I'd swap out those handles.)
The walnut veneer is amazing! The legs you added instead of that awful base upgrade the piece! You had an accident with the handles but they turned out beautiful! I am so happy you can afford to edit and restore such pieces and share the process! Thanks so much for sharing
“..At least know with confidence that’s something you’ll never try again”. I can apply this lesson to many experiences in my life. Please ask more than $400. It’s absolutely beautiful.
This has nothing to do with your work on the piece but your voice is the only noise I can stand to hear today. I'm on day two of one of the worst migraines I've had since I was hit by a semi 4 years ago and hearing you talk is actually soothing for me today.
You do yourself down Barry. That piece is an absolute peach! Also, any profit is still profit no matter the amount. I build stuff that sometimes twould put me below minimum wage but it’s my time and it was productive rather than costing me money. It’s a win win when you monetise your hobby mate. Have a good one.
That is a surprisingly beautiful result! Maybe it wasn’t what you hoped for, but that finish and grain is gorgeous, and you kept it from the landfill! Someone will be very happy to have that in their home, thanks to you!
The final (as it is in this video, at least) looks wonderful and is a huge improvement over its original state. Your decision to make it taller was spot-on and really celebrates that walnut grain..
Please know this is said with total love and respect...Are you goofy???...not feeling well??? ..."call it good"...seriously Barry?!?! That sideboard is absolutely stunning!!! Another magnificent restoration. BRAVO
What an absolute stunner!! It's amazing, Barry. You are so humble and perpetually positive. It's understandable to get frustrated with pieces that require a lot of detail work. You might want to keep in mind that your viewers really enjoy watching you work through difficulties like that. Many of us learn through you. Your work is incredible and you might not give yourself enough credit. I'm blown away by what you turned this piece into. It was a brilliant decision to remove the base and add the legs. It's gorgeous!!!
Oh my gosh, this is absolutely gorgeous! I think it looks so much better with the old bottom taken off, and the new likes added. I know you see things that still need to be done to it, but it is just beautiful!❤😊
When I see Restaurations I often think of the rentability of these projects, and from your words I can confirm my thoughts: it is not high. Your wish to repair comes from an inner source.
It may have taken lots longer than practical, but refinishing is not always about practical. This looks incredible and I love the new legs. The bees wax enriched the color so much. Its a very beautiful piece!
It’s beautiful! The legs look original. I’m looking forward to your next projects. Sometimes work can seem like you don’t make much headway, but there are small things that after time build up to make a big transformation! My previous work was in property management, lots of homeless cleanup. No matter the work I did, the next day there was a 97.35% 🙃 chance the mess would be back. After some frustration, I began to improve on my efficiency and worked on approaching each day as calmly as possible. It didn’t happen overnight, haha! I hope these tedious projects can provide you with positive avenues- even the ability to refrain from being overwhelmed and taking the journey bit by bit is big! Have a great week!
I've heard a saying:"If you never fail, then you are not taking enough chances." We feel good about our successes, but we learn more from our failures. I hope my successes look as good as your "failures"! Thank you for teaching us correct techniques and which tools to use.
Nice design choices. Next time try multiple coats of Rubio, though the Howard’s looks good , you’ll get more wear out of the hard wax. The Milescraft sandplane is fantastic, I’ll have to pick that one up. I’m a new subscriber and I look forward to seeing more content. I’m an artist/woodworker with more than thirty years experience and I have restored my share of antiques. I have a Hoosier cabinet, an art deco buffet, and an 1828 box baby grand piano waiting for attention. Great video, I like your videography style.
know it was a lot of work but definitely worth it. You transformed this piece, I think it looks fabulous with all that beautiful grain exposed and those perfect legs. Well done, Barry!
Barry, I love your channel, your work, and your soothing tone while educating us along the way! I've ben doing this for decades, but I arn learning from you regularly...ihave never boiled my hardware, just soaked it cold overnight
I was very happy to hear you say "never underestimate the value of opening a book." I agree whole heartedly. and I love to watch your videos. They're very peaceful relaxing and informative. keep up the good work!
Whatever its origins and history, you gave the piece new life and purpose. The walnut glows and the new legs give it better proportions. I know you are always learning the crafts but you have a positive and calming attitude to the journey. Well done, Barry.
Barry, you surely made a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I'm working on a knitting project and have learned that every mistake is a learning experience. Challenges are what keeps life interesting.
Dear Barry, my woodworking friend, your piece turned out lovely. I just wanted everyone to know that woodworking isn't as easy as you make it look. Your professionalism and attention to detail is to be commended. That was a lot of hard work, and I know this because you inspired me to work on my wooden furniture. Now I'm a lot older than you, but everyone that came around (my neighbors) to check my progress said they would just replace their pieces with new ones. Too much work for them. But my pieces are very sentimental to me. I've had them for a long time. I do have an advantage somewhat, mine are solid wood. Thank goodness, just a few small repairs where the vacuum has hit them. I love your channel and I consider you a friend and woodworking mentor. You persevere and get it done. Never doubt yourself when your intentions are thought through and their reasons are in the best interest of the matter. Live, learn, and love. God bless you and keep you.
Sorry I don't care what you say that what is absolutely amazing! I can see why they went with the Asian flair with the paint. Those handles are cool. The word came out awesome and my legs elevated to look. No pun intended.
Everything you show turns out nice you do a great job the time you spend is well worth it I know some of the frustration you have good taste you have a eye for beauty wood
The legs just elevated the piece for me, both physically and metaphorically. The wood grain on the veneer is gorgeous. So much better than the sloppy blue paint job!
Wow! So beautiful my friend. I am currently doing a No No, painting 3 sides of a lane cedar chest. It's not a real old one, but I think it will really please some one. Awesome piece once again Barry, well done.
I've done a bit of bondoing pitted hardware like that. Works out pretty well most of the time. Sometimes it's a trainwreck though. If you're gonna paint it anyway, it might be a decent option. Nickel electroplating is pretty easy and you might look into electroless copper plating. I've never had a reason to look into brass, so no thoughts there. Great video as always. I really like how you show an inside view into your failures and your future videos. I try to catch all your videos the day they release because they are usually pretty relaxing and your storytelling is getting better and better.
Barry, you’ve done great (with mistakes you’ve leaned) so far with this project❗️I really appreciate the time out you take to show us what you got around your shop. Plus the “thank yous”. I’ve used Howard’s wax as a last step on wood. That’s ok? I buffed it in. Again thanks for sharing your wood pieces with us. 🤩😻🕊️
Новые ножки дали лёгкость, прекрасный цвет, старая фурнитура, несмотря на то, что пострадала от времени - в этом золотом цвете замечательно подходит. Меня всегда подкупает ваш вкус и чувство меры
You sir are the ultimate perfectionist! This piece was fortunate to end up in your very talented hands! Didn’t doubt for a moment you would make it a desirable piece and lucky for us a very instructive learning experience. Bravo 👏🏽 👏🏽
Wow. Learning experiences are fun, and, yes, call it good! It’s so wonderful to hear your thoughts and how you process the challenges you find. It’s just so practical and good modeling. Beautiful piece!
What an impressive transformation! Who would have known such beautiful wood was hidden underneath. I have pained many pine pieces of furniture, but I would have a hard time painting over something that was naturally so beautiful!
This project had me frustrated many times, and I still don't feel like it is complete, but I am grateful for all the hard lessons learned along the way. Thank you for all your support! Barry
Fantastic work as always and showing you work on several projects at once
Anything spray painted frustrates me. I love the hardware. ❤ Great job.
I made a comment below that maybe the legs would look better slanted out? It’s not a criticism, just an idea🤗❤️🐝
I love the end product! Great job Barry!
Wow that turned out really, really, beautiful!!!
Missed your content Barry. That piece looks so much better. To the "artist " the piece never looks complete. To the layman, it's appears as perfection.

Awesomeness
WOW Barry, that looks amazing compared to the original.🥰💕👍👍💪💪

I think you did a fantastic job. You transferred an ugly duckling into a swan. Thank you.

Thank you
wow looks really good. I am looking forward to all of your videos.
Thank you
No one would recognize that as the same furniture. Well done.
The revealed wood grain is absolutely gorgeous. Yes, you’ve put a lot of work into this project, but it definitely shows.
Thank you
Very good job.., magnificent result..! Greetings from Ecuador!!!
Beautiful! So glad you didn’t throw this piece to the woodpile!!
It looks great! Glad you discovered walnut under the blue paint and black enamel.
Greatly improved. Thank you for sharing your process with us. As a neophyte refinisher, all information is good information.
Ok video finished. Barry, that piece is beautiful. The glow and gleam of the wood.... * chef's kiss *
The final (as it is in this video, at least) looks wonderful and is a huge improvement over its original state. Your decision to make it taller was spot-on and really celebrates that walnut grain..
Barry, you done good son! I was thinking it was elm. That wax finish is super nice.
Thank you so much
The sideboard is truly a piece of beauty. As your skills continue to flourish, we are also learning with you. Increasing the leg height was spot on!!
Thank you
I thought it turned out brilliant Barry. Well done.
