I think Regina instructed Belle to break Rumple's heart. The "how" part was Belle's own way up to a point when Regina took over. That's the time when not only Rumple hurts Belle but Belle begins to hurt him too, and as she's a woman she has nastier ways to do so.
Being banished and having a heart attack truly did a number on Rumple. The old Rumple knows Regina won't kill Belle, and the old Rumple loves Henry too much to just leave him out of the story, "Heroes and Villains."
+iRazenrak mmmh it wouldnt be really that weird for regina to kill belle concidering all the other people she has killed plus all the stuff she has done to belle.
Not at this point though. Rumple knows Regina is trying to do better, and be better. So it's unlikely she'd kill anyone who wasn't an immediate threat to her or her family.
That’s what I think is so cool about shows that have a history. Had it been a first season, it might not have meant a lot about there threatening eachother, but after seeing how they interacted throughout the past few years, seeing them become friend, foe, ally, and everything in between, it made that standoff so cool.

I know her hate for Rumple at the moment is even scarier than her hate for Snow BUT I think that she felt that she had to go full on EQ since that was " the 3rd way " AND the bottled up anger for Rumple really made this look like the 3rd way to her . Here , it shows that has come far but still , she has to know that there may be another way .

Regina had Lacy locked up for a very long time in Storybrook. Has Rumpbelstiltskin ever loved and not be devastated? As the dark one, I'd think he would rather forgett what love feels like. Mila, Bae, Cora, Belle ... oh, and now, a baby with Belle.
While I certainly don't condone stealing Belle's heart, Rumple SERIOUSLY forced Regina's hand here. At the end of the day, Regina needed some major leverage and I just can't think of anything other options for her.
They have a tendency to applh that it's only killing but Rumple said dark deeds. Dark deeds doesn't mean killing. Besides Rumple may have been the Dark One for centuries but he was an insane mass murderer unlike Regina, Zelena and even Hook (ex: Robert). Rumple only has still killed people as well, was more the kind to make deals with people, and taking advantage of the situation. If someone crossed him, like a thief or someone who didn't honor their deal, he would torture them and then kill them. But those kind of people were rare, cause the majority of people know better than to cross the Dark One.
