Mind-Blowing INSIDE OUT Theory - Riley Actually CONTROLS Her Emotions ...

- Check out this mind-blowing theory about Inside Out, diving into why the emotions might not have free will. At first glance, it seems like Riley's emotions are running the show, but the theory flips the script, suggesting that it's Riley who's calling the shots. Evidence starts with Sadness tweaking memories without Riley's control, leaving her puzzled about why she does it. Sadness is the lone influencer here; Joy and Fear can't budge the memories. Riley suppresses sadness, not the other way around. The movie's kickoff, with Joy and Sadness getting sucked out, is symbolic. Joy battles a core memory symbolizing Riley's desire to squash a sad incident in class. Riley resists this memory so hard that she suppresses both Joy and Sadness, leading to a personality shutdown. The journey with Bing Bong, highlights her reluctance to let go. In the end, the theory suggests that Joy's realization about the value of Sadness mirrors Riley accepting her own emotions and leaving childhood behind. The trampoline collapse in Family Island and the acceptance of all emotions symbolize Riley's growth.

Well the second movie actually confirmed this… So it’s not really a theory anymore. The last scene shows that the emotions cannot control Riley’s self and now it’s more clear since the panel (Riley) will call whoever is needed at that moment, this way the emotions are not all fighting to see who is in control anymore.
Did we not watch the same movie? Riley can call who she wants to the panel, yes, but she was clearly forced to do things that she didn't want to and otherwise wouldn't do. Anxiety broke her core/morals and threw it away, and made Riley betray her friends, break into the coach's office, be a selfish puck hog, and sent her into a panic attack. I'm pretty sure that Riley didn't willingly choose to be anxious and go through all that struggle, or get woken in the middle of the night by Anxiety multiple times. So while she can resist the influence of her emotions to not do things they push her to if she really doesn't want to, and she can exert herself enough to show which emotion she wants, I don't think either side is 100% in control.
Riley is separate from her emotions. Her emotions care for her and can guide her, helping to shape her life experiences. She can let her emotions know what she wants, and she can cause things to go wild in her mind. But in the end, both sides are separate entities that are working together. Neither one is in full control of the other.
@@jackiechan715 You are kinda seeing this literally and that’s not the message the movie wants to convey. The emotions as characters are just an allegory for Riley’s actions. Is not like she is a Megazord being controlled by the Power Rangers inside a cabin full time.
Like, in the first movie, for example, Anger controls baby Riley to throw a tantrum to not eat broccoli, but he changes his mind immediately after Riley’s dad does the little airplane and Riley gladly eats the broccoli. That wouldn’t make ANY sense if Anger was an entity with full control of Riley, he would simply remain in control until another one in the group stepped in.
even in real life emotions can control a person in a quite literal fashion. Anger, anxiety, depression, theres a reason why anger management and multiple mental health treatments exist. Emotions can control you, you can also willingly control emotions, but unless you have a mental disorder neither are in 100% direct control.
The other commenters more literal take ia also the more realistic one minus all the anthropomorphic characterizations running around our brain. @@asafin100
@@asafin100 I think you're trying to look a little too deep and throwing in hidden messages that you want it to have, same as how all these teachers try to interpret a "deeper meaning" behind every single word in a book that you're required to read as part of the class.
"The curtains are blue to signify the deep depression and sorrow of the author/character/etc"
No, the curtains are blue because they're fuckin blue, because I like blue, Karen.
@@jackiechan715 It’s not a hidden message. That’s the movie’s plot.

The emotions actually don't have full control over Riley at all. Sometimes these emotions straight up says Riley's thoughts and actions without realizing that's what Riley actually thought. Like in Inside Out 2, you can see it clearly with Anxiety. As Riley heard about her friends leaving her, she actually felt betrayed like rest of her emotions in her head. As the new emotions came, Anxiety took the lead because Riley was feeling differently, desperate wanting new friends and be new as a whole. That's why she suppressed more of her emotions and let Anxiety lead the way, wanting to be a new person which took a toxic turn. She took Hockey more seriously, that's why she wasn't cooperative, she wants to be better because she felt that she's not good enough. Anxiety letting go means Riley accepting her mistake and move on, she wanted to feel the joy at playing hockey again instead of try harding
Make sense

Anibox facts still in his Inside Out phase
This theory supports on the physiological beliefs of "subconsciousness and soul". Your mind and you are two seperate entities binded together by a temperory bond -"living" ...very philosophical..
What personality are you?
This is not a theory, THIS IS WHAT THE MOVIE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE ENTIRE TIME, COME ON!!!!
Anibox is a yapping clown. Unsubscribed
FR
No, the movie was talking about how suppressing emotions can cause you to lose who you are.
The theory just means that it was not joy's decision to suppress sadness, it was Riley's choice.
Well, that's not a theory @@simondavidras4738
Yes
Well yeah, the whole thing is that the emotion characters symbolize human emotions, I’m still not sure if one controls the other, but I’m assuming they both have some influence on one another.
Of course Riley’s running the show. Why else would every memory Sadness touches turn sad?
Wait, do you mean that the character inside her mind are actually metaphors of her feelings and inner struggles instead of actual little people living inside her head?!
Wow, incredible theory captain! >___>
I thought that's the main story 😐
In essence Riley is having a bout of preteen depression.
Everyone talking about how he’s milking it, but he’s so right these theories are genius
Bro gonna be milking this movie for the next 3 years 🙏😭
If this phase is gonna keep going when its next month I think I might lose it 💀
Not knowingly. I think subconsciously she is kinda controlling what the emotions do. I mean in the first and second one she had different reasons why it was tough for Riley to feel the emotions that conveniently leave her mind until she can overcome what it is that’s making her feel afraid/angry or Anxious/Envious.
There emotions, they can’t quit, and can’t go outside the persons head, so please tell me what free will they have when they are just chilling
Yeah Riley in inside out two was wanting joy at the end of the movie
That confirms your theory yw❤
Also she was sad and sadness was showing empathy

@@kacebest1741 yeah it’s kinda annoying
I feel this also showed in the second movie. Riley cries at one point near the beginning and Joy says “it’s good for her”. Only holding off so she doesn’t cry in front of everyone
I’ve practically watched the entire Inside Out 2 film thanks to this guy 💀
Yup…. This is the point of the movie….
Its was oblivious
Remembering childhood doesn't make you a child. If anything that's how you mature .
i miss Bingbong😢😭
My whole fyp rn: *insert joy singing lalalalalalal dodododododood with the emotions dead while her making Riley JUST HAPPY*
Why do you always slowly turn more into a robot
Pixar theory: what if In the Zone and turning into a monster (Soul) = console turning grey and can’t use any buttons (Inside Out)
The emotions only control what she feels
Imagine every person's head has the Inside Out plot.
When you think about the movie, Riley is really the only actual character (other than the other people. The emotions are just Riley over Riley. You could say that it’s obvious, but yeah. The emotions aren’t really actual characters.
A “theory” about how emotions work. Amazing…
I can't believe people are still arguing about this 9 years later AND one sequel later 😭. The emotions in these two movies have always been metaphorical representations of Riley's emotional and mental state. Some examples:
-in the first movie, both Joy and Sadness getting lost in Riley's mind is a metaphor for the fact that Riley, by suppressing her sadness, also stopped being happy. That's why only Disgust, Anger and Fear were left, it's because she was mad and scared after recently moving;
-in the first movie, Sadness touching the core memories isn't an annoying character being dumb, it's a representation of Riley looking back at the happy moments she experienced in Minnesota but being sad because she'll never have those moments again;
-in the second movie, the bad memories flooding the belief system and Joy throwing away the old sense of self is a representation of the new perspective of life she embarked after those few important days. Her sense of self keeps changing because that's how puberty and teenagehood is;
I could do this with basically every scene in the movies.
I can understand kids not getting it, they like the emotions as characters (I did too when I was a kid when the first movie came out), but I really expect adults to have better media literacy instead of making dumb obvious theories by stating the whole point of the franchise.
Thank you for reading my rant 😋
people can learn discipline to control their emotions, so this makes sense
It’s a very good theory because in inside out 2 the same thing happens- Riley literally rethought what she was doing when anxiety was basically trying to force her to go do what she was going to do (not trying to spoil anything for those who haven’t seen it
The emotion characters are like extra support. If a children’s movie was saying that we don’t control ourselves and it’s actually little people inside our heads, then it could cause some controversy.
I'm starting to realize that the first movie represents depression which is really cool!
At the end of IO2 we get a confirmation of that when there are yellow particles that start to flow from Joy to the console.
My brain: well let me just explode from a confusion💥
Well yeah the movie is pretty obviously very metaphorical
I think the biggest proof is when the emotions used the idea light bulb, they said "She accepted it", So Riley had control over the situation, not the emotions.
I hate disgust and anger
When your older and you watch it again, it will be different. Trust me.
The thumbnail to this short was def a 10/10
Short version.
She had a mental breakdown.
It wasn’t that intentional and symbolic that sadness and happiness get paired together. the original paring was fear and happiness. But they thought it would have been funnier for it to have been sadness.
Well, the second movie literally lets Anxiety say: "We don't get to choose who Riley is" so...
Bro enjoying joy 💀
the emotions are essentially riley what the hell is this theory even supposed to mean
bro's career inside out
Riley literally controls her emotions in the second film lmao she yearns for Joy
Wow!!! Such a good theory!!! I hope you make another because I understood nothing 😃
I love how these channels almost always point out something the movie shows you without outright telling you, then they strut around like they're so smart for recognizing it.
You'd think a channel that presents itself as a cinema analysis channel would understand "show, down tell." enough to know that explaining it defeats the trope.
I feel like it's both. Riley has controll but the emotions can also influence her.
But i do think that whatever happens to the emotions is destiny.
Did u know that sadness is the hero of inside out
I don't think I have joy in my head if I was in a movie
That's why inside out 2 has the sense of self
Outside 2. It shows that Riley can control how she feels. See her cry when sadness doesn't even touch the control panel. Was confused when I saw that.
They can control when cry and angey and sad, but so can Riley..
Theory: when joy cried in inside out 2 does that mean that she has emotions and those emotions have emotions and so on!
ngl when blud was saying fear i hear bear👁️👄👁️
Since in the second movie we get a look at both this theory and the opposite, I think that the emotions control her, but if she feels like they aren’t giving her the correct emotions, she can want to feel different tyings
Well tbf, the memory Sadness changed resulted in the making of a Core Memory which I doubt they can actually stop
Joy is too much Underestimating Sadnness in that Situation
did you know rileys mom is actually andy from toy story
Isn't it common knowledge that this character are just shown to represent how our emotions work in this case riley's
The emotions obviously are not characters living inside of Rileys head, they all are a part of Riley
Sadness tweaking Riley's memories
I NEVER NEW THAT
The thumbnail is crazy 💀
yep the first one was mindblowing
“joy and sadness getting sucked out…” 👀
Well given that in the end scene of Inside out 2 Riley sort of call Joy to the console this theory seems a lot more plausible to me then it would if I had just seen the first movie. On the other hand her metion can make her do stuff.
Bro barley got the point of the whole movie
This whole movie is a metaphor yes. That’s the whole point!
I feel like that's actually what is going on isn't it? Emotions aren't they're own beings, they are us.
Why is nobody talking about the thumbnail
Sadness is way too weird...☠️💀
Wait.. when Fear tried to quit and get out of the headquarters how did that not happen?

Do people actually want them to have free will? They’re just emotions. Ofc Riley calls the shots here otherwise she’s just a mindless robot waiting to receive signals on how to feel on everything
Love this movie
That's not a theory, it's the entire point of the movies. The emotions ARE Riley, or rather, specific aspects of her.
The thumbnail 💀
The thumbnail💀💀
THE ACTORS AND DIRECTORS ALREADY SAID TO JUST ENJOY THE MOVIE AND NOT MAKE EVERYTHING A THEORY
the thumbnail💀💀💀
Yeah because its Rileys emotion
Guys, Inside Out is not a "story". The only real story is "Riley moves". The rest is just how our brain reacts. It's not that Riley controls her emotions or the other way around, it's just that Riley IS her emotions, and her emotions and all the system behind is just... Riley. That's how our brain works, and this movie is ridiculously psychologically accurate. Joy can't come back in that moment because in real life that's what happens in such moments. There are not characters on their own, they are just Riley's emotions
I miss bing bong.......
Yeah, but Riley didn't suppress Joy and sadness. We see what suppressed emotions are in the second one.
Rip sadness
Well no shit, It's a simbolic movie, I always thought riley the one why her "emotions" act that way, It was just easier to demonstrate the message to the audience this way, and it's more creative to show little people in someones head who make riley feel things, cause sometines people can feel like they do not control their feelings but your feelings control you. At the end of inside out 2 Riley finally learned to control her emotions in a healthy way, by "calling" happiness, cause she wanted to embrace it
No theory… you already proved it…
Outside out 💀

I think her mind space is something she psychically made up. Every character and area is her imagination. It’s the same for me I have my own workers in my mind (that being Cerebellum, Education, Workspace, Emotions, Relationships, Health, and Mental Health).
