oh it's also interesting that Riley could have met her Joy, but it's still always very emotional and cute Joy talking to Riley as a child skating and that memory
Idk why but it makes sense for the emotions to have a mic, Remember that all of the characters in Riley's mind ARE Riley. The conversations between her emotions are her internal debates with herself, so i feel like a mic would make sense Edit: oh, wow, this aged really well, no mic but she can definitely hear them lol
4:36 this scene is sadder in the final because bing bong asks joy to take Riley to the moon for him, but she can't because the two can't meet each other in person (there may be a better way to explain it but it's late and I'm tired).
I think he meant metaphorically, guide Riley there. Perhaps steering her to becoming an astronaut? Or maybe not, since it was a childhood fantasy and we always have those.
Better that emotions can't directly control her, because we don't really get to choose how we feel during situations but we can choose how to respond to those feelings. It's the same as these emotions. They can influence her with certain emotions, but they're ultimately Riley's decisions.
Which also makes sense why Joy is so opposed to Riley growing up, as she believes she knows what's best for Riley. As Riley gets older she gains more critical thinking skills and acts less on emotion, which scares the emotions as they have less control and in their eyes can’t keep her safe.
This is why Sadness was so touchy in the first movie, Riley was feeling nostalgic, so Sadness felt the same and thats why only she could turn the yellow joy orbs to blue sad orbs
The early versions of Joy remind me of the early versions of woody in Toy story. He started out as a mean, nasty jerk before becoming the woody we all know and love. It goes to show that how much the characters develop and evolve from the early drafts
I read a fanfic once that was like this. But it was a little dark. Maybe too dark for Disney and Pixar. Riley was riding her bike, but she had a terrible accident, and banged her head on the sidewalk. She went into a coma due to her emotions neglecting her to ware a helmet. While she was in this "coma" she dreamed of her visiting her emotions. And she met all if them. I don't remember exactly everything that went down, because it's been a while since I read it, but one of the plot points was that Joy tried to use Riley to bring Bing-Bong back. Since she was there with them, Joy wanted to see if Riley's presence would bring him back from her forgetting him. Yeah I don't really know how Riley was talking with the emotions, while inside her own head lmao. Because she was having emotions while she was talking.... while being in her head. So yeah lmao idk. But the dark part about the fic- was the end of it. A "new" emotion showed up out of nowhere. Pitch black, darkness all over it. Turns out it wasn't an emotion, it was "Death" because apparently Riley wasn't gonna live. Sad part is, i remember the fic ended there, there was no continuation.
It seems in the old version, the emotions just made Riley feel these things, but the characters didn't have to match the emotion. In the final version, Joy was usually happy, Sadness was usually sad, etc. which I think helped the appeal. Joy being a stuck-up diva might make people think being happy is... rude to the other emotions? It would be complicated. They did, however, keep Joy wanting Riley basically to be a kid forever. Actually, it's what they all want- the good, simple times of childhood. That's why they try to go back on the bus before Sadness stops them- they want the simple times back.
Tbh, I really hope we get a scene of Joy and Riley meeting someday. It would be cute. Thank goodness they didn't feature Fear as a villain since that would ruin the movie.
The dialogue and motivations of the Joy and Fear sub-personalities in the original script kind of resemble 'Firefighter' and 'Manager' sub-personalities. One is assertive and ignores social relationships to avoid pain and preserve the happiness of the self, while the other is more co-operative and controlling to suppress the self and prioritize social relationships. With all the issues that come from either one dominating over the other, the "Joy Alone" conclusion actually feels more significant. It's the moment when a sub-personality realizes that it's not about them, it's about the host. It's harder for a young audience to understand these ideas so the character change makes total sense. Still though, I have greater appreciation for the writers to even make the attempt to bring these important concepts for mental health to light.
After watching the movie (this was awhile back) I release a flaw in the premise of the movie. Why are the Emotions in control. Emotions are tools we can used to help us, but we should never be driven by them. The last thing you want in life is to be controlled by your emotions. That is when you make bad decisions. We are supposed to learn not to be controlled by our emotions. Also, who says we have to give up our imagination when we grow up?
I agree with you to some extent, yes emotions shouldn’t always drive us since it might lead to bad circumstances sometimes, but in reality most people feel these emotions and their changes all the time, wether they like it or not. And for someone at Riley’s age, emotions are usually in full control, as you grow up you learn that sometimes you need to think rationally and with your head. The premise of the movie was actually quite good imo, that sometimes when we feel sad we should express those feelings, if we feel lonely or need help we should talk to someone trustworthy about it, if you keep holding in these emotions it’ll cause you to do irresponsible stuff, by the end of the movie when Riley was going to leave the city and go back to her original hometown, she wasn’t thinking with her head, she unwillingly let the feelings of depression take over and block out anything else, but the emotions brought her back to her senses. As a child I totally related to Riley’s story since I did move out into places a lot and it would really take a toll on me, sometimes to the point of wanting to run away, but feeling sad that I’ll miss my family and that they’ll miss me brought me back to my senses🤍🙏
The emotions do not exactly control Riley on the movie. There are even the islands (honesty island, family island, etc) that make Riley act with no influence from the emotions, and when the emotions interfered, the islands collapsed.
this movie made me cry twice!! its a joyful movie but at the end become emotional as they reunite everyone in the end but the ending was good and brought hope, remember when's there's life, there's hiope!

or in once upon a time: life when maestro lets peter get into his OWN brain cell through a display screen and teaches him about how the brain sees things differently based on context. which was really weird because at no other moment in the series was it ever awknowledged again that this could happen or do the people inside the body ever directly interact with those outside.
5:28 Actually I've looked into that and we don't lose our imagination like we lose baby teeth. It's more a matter of adults using imagination less so it kind of atrophies. As adults we can still be imaginative, we just need to keep it strong through exercising it.
Is it just me or is that from 1:35-1:58 it makes her look almost as mean if not as mean as Black Friday Woody. I mean the similarities of them being mean to their friends are maybe also just coincidental.
This emotional scene Joy meets Riley sounds more emotional and great, this could work hopefully they can add this emotional scene in Inside Out 2 somewhere. 😊
They should make films about alternate people who aren't Riley at all, not a multiverse but quite appropriately the same universe, just with different people and their emotions relatively, and it never has to be solely about Riley. That could open up doors for Pixar if they did it right.
I love that they changed the story from the scrap where Joy dances with Riley, it’s similar to Toys Story which is an overused trope about letting go of things they can’t change or keep. So I’m glad changed it to a more relatable story, it's kind of refreshing for a Pixar movie
