Frenchman in his thirties here. Pretty Woman remains, to this day, one of the most delightful romcoms ever made. Everything about it works. It's one of those films that make you think, when you take a look at what's being made today... "yeah, things are not getting BETTER"... ^^; The duo is perfection. The girl is strong and never preachy, and the guy learns from her but doesn't turn into a beta male at the end. It's pretty conservative, which is fine by me. Roberts was at the peak of her beauty. Like you said, that damn hair, that volume, Jeez. Oh, and Laura san Giacomo deserved a better career.

as others have pointed out, if you want to understand why women used to swoon over Gere so much you need to go back and watch American Gigolo (1980), and An Officer & A Gentleman (1982). Both were big hits (Gentleman was a literal SMASH at the box office in '82). Gere was in his early 30's in these 2 movies, and they made him a superstar. By the time they filmed Pretty Woman Gere was already in his early 40's, though he was still very popular with women audiences in regards to movies.
Also of note, Julia Roberts was relatively unknown when she did this movie. She had done a couple of small films before this, but nothing big at all. Pretty Woman is what MADE her. And another interesting part of the story is that Richard Gere was on the fence about even doing the movie. The director was trying to convince him to do the movie and had him meet with Julia Roberts (again pretty much unknown at the time). Gere met her, and as they were getting to know each other the director (Gary Marshall) called to see how things were going etc, because if Gere would have said no they would have possibly had a hard time getting the movie financed. That's how Hollywood works, the big movie studios don't like to put movies in theaters without established names, and by this point (although his career had slowed down some from its zenith in the early/mid 80's) - Gere was still an established leading man in Hollywood with several hits under his belt. So Marshall (the director) calls Gere to see how things are going and to see if he likes this relative unknown actress Julia Roberts etc, and Roberts hands Gere a hand written note while he's on the phone.
The note simply said "please say yes". Gere did and the rest is history.

While filming, a security man from the jewelry store equipped with a gun was constantly standing behind the director. I remember reading an article all these years later and the interviewer asking Julia Roberts if her still being tied to this movie by forever being called Pretty Woman no matter what the circumstance bothered her. And Julia gave the most candid, matter of fact real answer I'd ever heard on the subject. She bluntly said, 'Let me think. Um, hells no. What's the alternative? Being called Mediocre Woman. Or That Old Whore. There are worse fates in this world than being condemned with the lasting label of Pretty Woman.'

There were so many cinematic callbacks to this movie throughout the years speaking to its influence. One of the best was oddly in 2000's SHE'S ALL THAT. When the leading girl says to the main heart-throb guy their magical moment getting together finally 'is some kind of fairy tale. Like Pretty Woman and I'm Julia Roberts. I mean, except for the prostitution part.'
Gere and Roberts super natural and effortless banter plus crazy chemistry has lost none of it's power.

I think what you might have noticed as “Desert” at the Formal Dinner scene was a little Crème De Menthe or Mint Sorbet traditionally brought out to clear the pallet in between courses. Part of the joke with Vivian frantically trying to get another bite of it before it was being removed by the waiter is that it’s not really part of the meal and isn’t designed to be finished merely used. ( a spoonful eaten ) Between courses. clears the taste buds, so you are ready to fully experience the tastes & textures of the next course. ( relatively tiny but very expensive plates of food ). Put together in particular combinations to enhance, & meld flavors. Flavors heightened by the wine chosen for that specific course / flavor profile. Fine dining can have anywhere from 4 to ten courses. Each paired with different wines. Not rich myself BTW. Boyfriend is a fine dining chef.

The 90s was also the birth of TECHNO and INDUSTRIALISED CASTING GROUPS and GANGSTAH RAP ... and a certain "north atlantic military organisation" not changing its goals, but rather keeping on fighting the Cold War ...
It was the decade when sh.. really started to aim for the fan ... announced by Osama's first failed attempt at bombing the World Trade Center.

12:07 "Vivian, I have a business proposition for you."
      "What do you want?"
"I'm gonna be in town until Sunday. I'd like you to spend the week with me."
      "Really?"
"Yes. Yes, I'd like to hire you as an employee. Would you consider spending the week with me? I will pay you to be at my beck and call."
"Look. I'd love to be your beck-and-call girl, but, uh, you're a rich, good-looking guy. You could get a million girls _free."_
"I want a professional. I don't need any romantic hassles, this week."
"If you're talkin' 24 hours a day, it's gonna cost you."
"Oh, yes. Of course. All right. Here we go. Give me a ballpark figure. How much?"
"Six full nights. Days, too. 4000."
"Six nights at 300 is 1800."
      "You want days, too."
      "2000."
      "3000."
      "Done."
      "Holy sh!t!"
See that? Kit told her not to be content with less than $100 and she just locked up _$3000!_

Hello, saw it in theater. Just saw a RUclips video two weeks ago. Hector Elizondo was describing how James Garner took Hector under his wing. In a sense a protégée. Anyways the Ladies of " Force of Light Entertainment " are every bit as stunning as Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock. i hope that you two find your " Eduard ". I wish you good health, good fortune and happiness.
As is often shouted in unison upon the streets of Kyoto, Japan: " Hey! "

Always enjoyed this movie. I was in 8th grade when it came out. The appreciation for it grew over the years. Which made Runaway Bride more intriguing since they had such good chemistry in this movie. Julia was pretty much the queen of Hollywood for a decade. She gave us movies Like Pretty Woman, Steel Magnolias, Dying Young, Hook, The Pelican Brief, I Love Trouble, Stepmom, and Nottinghill. I miss movies like that. They don't come out of Hollywood anymore. Anyone But You came close, but the comedy was too much cringe for me. Thankfully, you can get that vibe from shows out of Korea, China, and Japan. If you haven't looked at the streaming service Viki, I highly recommend it. I have found several great series on there.

Impossible to watch Pretty Woman and NOT fall in love with Julia Roberts. And how good is Hector Elizondo! If you haven't seen The Flamingo Kid, Hector is great as Matt Dillon's Dad.
Thanks for another great watch pretty women!

What's not to like? Besides Julia Roberts making her mark on the cinema we get La Traviatta (which will absolutely make you cry at the end) and an appearance by Elinor Donahue who was all over network TV in my childhood - she delivers that "They never are" line like Maravich or Bird with a look-away pass. Great choice and I enjoyed watching it (again) with you two.

Didn't see this in theaters, but when it aired on TV. Lol, I was just starting high school then. Good movie, and looking back on it, Julia just had that "wow" factor that guys couldn't resist. That movie made her the "It" girl in Hollywood for quite a while. I slso remember Roy Orbison's titular song got played on the radio a lot. I think it made it back into the charts as a result. Fun reaction Lovely Ladies. 👍😎👍

Sidney Poitier in one of his last movies, and Diane Venora, one of my favorite actress as Koslova. And Him young in legendary drama romance movie, 1982 An Officer and a Gentleman, with great Louis Gossett Jr, and Debra Winger.
Guarantee you both will like both movies.
