    I have never had the chance to review a Nikon before, so for my first time this quiet the camera to test. The Nikon z9 is a stellar camera with all the specs. With 8K raw and pores raw this camera has all the video features you could need. But what about the rest of the Nikon line up?

    I always used Nikon for videos since the D7000 days through D850. BEAUTIFUL footage. Eventually switched to BMPCC4Ks and now to Komodo. I did think about the Nikon Z9. Always loved the Nikon colors. And the cameras are super solid. Never understood why some people thought they were a joke.

    • @SooksVI
      @SooksVI Год назад +3

      I think Nikon is partly to blame for that stigma. No one remembers that Nikon was the first to put video in a DSLR because they never followed through and video took a backseat. I'm glad that they're finally addressing it. I remember assisting a buddy of mine on a wedding shoot and I set up my D750 on sticks as a third camera. He was shocked at the clarity of the video... And I was puzzled because as a long time Nikon shooter this was obvious to me.

      You can absolutely get amazing video from older and cheaper DSLR's, but people hate because Nikon's live view and video autofocus was horrible. It's improved some, the D6 is probably the second best DSLR, only the D780 has an autofocus advantage in LiveView/Video with it's on sensor PDAF. I have sold news footage to all of the major stations in Los Angeles and San Diego, taken on everything from a D4s to my D6's and they love it. I've had editors compliment my footage and they never asked or knew I took with a Nikon. If you're a professional videographer you should absolutely know or learn how to manual focus, so I don't see why all the hate. People have made some cool short films and I'm sure we've all seen some Nikon taken video and not even realized. I do however understand why some people gave Nikon a hard time, Nikon did take a long time to fully understand video and the market. The Z6 and Z6II and now the Z9 are being used everyday by creators and even Hollywood. I see Z9's everywhere I go, and I've only seen one R3 in the wild. I personally would never buy the Z9, but I absolutely love the R3 and I would switch if it wasn't bad timing financially. So for now I use my Nikon D6 and D500 and I'm in love. The D6 is actually not bad for silent shooting and video, but it definitely helps if you can manually focus if the need arises. I think if were talking video AF, Canon defintely holds an advantage in their "Dual-Pixel AF!" The automatic focus pulls are very natural and look great. However Nikon is in my opinion outdoing Canon now with glass, they have some innovative and great lenses. I know Canon has the 28-70mm f/2 and what not, but Nikon has been innovating and beating Canon with better lenses for less money. The Nikon 800pf (f/6.3 vs f/5.6) is $6500, while the ever so slightly brighter and larger Canon 800mm is $19,500? The Nikon is lighter and sharper, since it was designed from the ground up, if you will. Canon took a crappy shortcut and glued extenders and mount adapters to existing lenses. These existing lenses were already considered by some to be a downgrade optically compared to the Version II Canon IS L super-tele's!

Also worth noting that the Z mount has the shortest registration and widest mount diameter of all 35mm mounts so can adapt pretty much any 35mm lens made.

    WOW what a great unbiased review, I own the R3 as well and I wish it had some of the video specs the z9 or even the A1 has. But for a hybrid camera that has a light weight chasis, fast shooting for photos, 6k raw at 60 frames, c-log 3, and the RF mount like the R3, I couldn't change it either. Great video and thanks for giving us a great honest review and not trying to sell us this camera because because of you I bought the R3 so thanks man.

    The Z9 fitted with Nikon's fantastic telephotos is a wildlife photographers dream. Switch from stills to video and back to cover two markets. In the field camera equipment needs to be extremely rugged to take the beating of dust, rain, snow, mud, slamming in the back of 4x4 vehicles and extreme cold and heat heavy weather. Good for industrial, agricultural, and combat photographers also. Weight and structure of camera good for heavy lenses like the 400mm f2.8 where you're moving the camera on a fluid head by holding and moving the camera not the tripod handle so you are putting heavy load on the lens mount. Good review.

    I have been a Canon fanboy since 1983. However, I went all-in with the Nikon Z9 (the first Nikon I have ever used) not only primarily because of the Z9 but mainly for their Zs lenses because as I was at that stage where I did not want to use adapters all the time with my lovely collection of EF glass, I was going to make a major investment in mirrorless glass and therefore I could choose any system! While the RF glass is optically wonderful for stills, I do not like the focus breathing and the inconsistent placement of the control dial among their lenses which I also wanted stepless without having to pay Canon to convert it. So as a system, I chose Nikon Z glass and the Z9 made me finally delve deep Into my wallet and I cannot wait for a mini version (maybe Z8) of the Z9 so as to have two pro bodies! I have not left Canon I have just added to my kit, I am truly looking forward to seeing what the future R1 brings to the table! 👍🏾🙏🏾

    6:22 - I personally would rather have a tilt-only screen over a full swivel screen as I always have an external monitor with me anyways and I like the convenience of just tilting and maintaining the center of gravity. Although the best screen would be a full tilt + swivel as seen on the S1H / GH6 / A7RV.

  • @Flamamacue
    @Flamamacue Год назад +1

    One thing Nikon did right with Z mount is making it so adaptable. The main thing Nikon got so wrong all this time is the lack of video capability and the crap mount that you couldn't adapt to (or from) so F-mount was basically it's own microcosm while Sony/Canon were so open. It held Nikon back so badly. But, if you were a Sony user, there are E-mount to Z adapters that apparently work quite well and also EF to Z, which is certainly a plus. If you were wanting to migrate from an EF mount camera it could be a good transition as you are still able to use lenses from any manufacturer.
    Wholeheartedly the leap between the Z6/7ii and the Z9 is too large though. As a Z6ii user the video is surprisingly good, I wrote it off being 8-bit but it's surprisingly usable and with the right grade looks amazing having Nikon's colour science. I didn't plan on using it much at all over my BMPCC4K but it gets used more often as I do photo+video and it's just so easy to have the one camera to do both. I would definitely love to have some ProRes or "lite" raw options in the middle ground. I would make the leap to the Z9 if it didn't have those few shortcomings like being heavy, but in a heartbeat I would go halfway for a smaller Z8 that had better video options and at least some of the Z9's awesome stuff like the AF

    Wow Brandon, the prospective that you took with this and the question that led into that perspective was brilliant. You did look at the camera from just a spec list, but from an eco system in which other video systems are based.
    This is something very rarely done, but probably not done because the other systems have a videography background. Canon, Sony, Arri, Red, heck even Panasonic have this video oriented eco system. You are right Nikon must build going forward on this.

    I do video and photography for The UFC, Redbull, Monster, Bellator MMA, Vans, and just recently PFL among a lot of other action sports (Surfing, Skateboarding, Snowboarding). I have 2 RED V Raptors along with pretty much every sub F4 RF lens on the market so I am covered for eveything, However, I also have a couple of A1's, R3's and R5, R5C and I got 2 x Nikon Z9's like 3 ish weeks early before the official release. Fast forward a year and I have fallen in love with the Z9, it is such an amazing camera and the footage is astonishing and I have no problem using it with my RED footage. I have been using it a lot for big wave surfing and I have the Z mount 600mm TC, 400mm, 800mm and possibly the best wideangle zoom ever made the Z 14 - 24 (not sure what magic they did with this lens, but, ow my...) The point here is I shoot some very challenging sports in equally challenging scenarios so I feel Ive kinda seen it all. The Z9 performs incredibly well, it really is crazy how good overall this thing is at this price point. Its a little heavy for my run and gun skateboard films but its still better on the arms than my RED rig and sometime I don't want to run around with a rig that's cost me over 100k. Anyone on the fence about this camera, just get one, even for the video only, you will not find a better camera even dedicated cinema camera in the price point that produces better footage, the 8k it produces is the best of any hybrid and the 8k 60fps when compared to my RED holds up insanely well, I mean REALLY well. Stick some good glass on anything though and you'll get great results. The A1, R3, R5(C) are all amazing cameras as well and it just makes you think what on earth will we have in 10 years time. Camera nerd out!

    I know this is late, but maybe this will help someone. The balancing issue with the Ronin RS2/RS3 Pro is because the riser plate was used. The Z9 is already tall, so mounting on top of that plate throws off the center of gravity, making it impossible to balance. I ran into that issue. You need to use a cage with an Arca Swiss mount and mount the camera lower. it will now be balanced, although the motors still struggle at times with drastic movements.

    big fan of Brandon and the dude really knows his stuff but I don't think it's fair to say that the lower tier Nikon bodies are so limited in video that they don't warrant consideration especially from beginners. I suggest watching Dan Watson's review on the z6ii to see what it's capable of from a video perspective. Not to mention that if you're a true hybrid user or especially if you're photo first, the Nikon products have easily delivered the best image quality and value of the big 3 in my personal experiencing owning full kits of each system. It's true that AF is a step behind Canon and Sony (excluding Z9) but again one needs to be honest with themselves about their skill level because even the mid tier models from each brand will be way more than enough to get great results and allow you the time to figure out what exactly it is you need and don't need from a system.

    Nikon needs to up its game big time to make it compelling, they need to come out with legendary lenses for people to convert. Their lenses are good but mostly it's equal to other high-end lenses from other brands. As for their body, they need to be better than Sony and Canon to make people switch.

    Although i wished that same video features on Z6, because im not a sport photographer. As for Nikon road map for video, i believe they are taking it too serious and will be introducing next year a Z camera that has a dedicated video centric features that probably exceeds the Z9. Expect it to be in the market around the Q3 2023, Plus they did a partnership with cinema centric big company for a collaboration in order to bring more options to their video lineup

    1. It's a $5.5K camera. Not a $6k camera. 2. Its superpower is TinyRaw, which beats Sony, Canon, Fuji hands down. 3. It can adapt lenses from other mounts. 4. Colours are accurate and vibrant, unlike tinted colours from Sony and Canon (red tint). 5. The ecosystem point is great, but what you're struggling with is a "MENTAL BARRIER" of adopting a 'Nikon' than any actual issue. [You like heavy, but this is too heavy now? Why would you choose lenses that won't balance? Do you try to balance 70 to 200 on the R3? Pros use a real Monitor all the time but suddenly you need a flip screen. So which of your cinema cameras have flip screen because it matches those very cinema cameras; you refer to that Idiot Sam newton's potato video as that's anything legitimate. Hence, I say it's your personal, limited mental block, which made this review emotionally hard for you. Anything that challenges your perception, makes life hard.
    6. Z6, Z7, Z6II, Z7II > All have 12 bit RAW and 10bit 422 since 2018. In fact Nikon Z6 was the first ML camera to offer 12bit RAW externally.
