My guy! Thank you for the love you've given the Z9 and Nikon. Can't wait for more positive and encouraging news and content from you about Nikon, keep up awesome work.
I have used nikon for years. I own Sony and have used Canon. Nikon is more difficult I the menu for people who I would say are not use to Nikon. Nikon gives you more options and flexibility plus with saving program profiles. Makes it a snap to jump to different settings. Love my camera
Photomeike let me use his Z9 at WPPI this year. I will say I love the honest review from a primarily Sony user. For me its just a bit heavier than I would like but when it comes to focusing it didn't miss a shot while out in the Valley of Fire! Firmware updates will make things even better but for straight out of the box use this was a great camera to experience!
The f/1.4 AF-S primes of Nikkor work great on the Z9 combined with the FTZ adapter. The results are even better than on the native F- mount camera's like the Nikon D5 or D6. Especially the AF-S 58/1.4 G and the AF-S 85/1.4 G work brilliantly on the Z9 with that perfect AF. Also the 105/1,4 and the 28/1.4 give some extra quality on the Z9. Personally I like the F Mount AF-S lenses more than the native Z lenses.
The amazing thing is, AF-S lenses focuss faster on the Z9, than any other Z camera. Purely going from minimum focussing distance to infinity. Yes the 105/F1.4 AF-S is an amazing lens. Works great on my Z6II and not as big or heavy as the gigantic Sigma 105/1.4
@@VishwasRavindran92 Have you early used early versions of Sony, Panasonic and Fuji autofocus they were no where near the speed of Nikon 3D autofocus only Canons dual pixel was hood but only for portrait photography not for wildlife if you don’t know any anything about dslr than you shouldn’t be commenting I guess you have a short memory,it has only been 3yrs since Sony 7 III that Sony started leading and that just one aspect of photography. ergonomics, weather sealing, lenses both Nikon 300+ and Canon more lens options than Sony, try using F mount 105 1.4 or the 200 f2 you’ll understand and not to forget the 3D pop micro contrasts Nikon images provide there is a reason National Geographic’s photography use Nikon as there main gear it has a history behind it and well worth the investment there was a time in 1970 that you would see any camera in the hands of journalists other than Nikon with the Z9 they seem to have came ahead of Canon because there is no other flagship that can compete A1 video quality is bad and it has flicker issue on top of the heating issue plus the cards are expensive I’m sure you have not forgotten hot shoe issue and canon is behind a full one year for it release of R1 which is slated for sometime in 2023 so yes Nikon is leading be jealous :)

@@Tap-a-roo have you used Nikon 105 if not than go and first use it to understand why people crave it your Sigma might be sharp but delivers flat image once you use it come back to reply
@@Tap-a-roo This is nonsense. The Nikon 105 1.4E was designed with the D810 and D850 in mind - it can easily resolve 45MP photos and it has far better character than the Sigma. It works like a dream on the Z system and better than native (for DSLR) on the Z9.
I am sure the upcoming firmware updates will fine tune the AF and hopefully the IBIS as well. This is all new tech for Nikon Z and just out the door so we should see the firmware updates soon.
Not sure when, but it was said at WPPI that a firmware update this year will allow 8k 12-bit internal recording on the Z9. For any filmmaker, having this capability at the Z9's price point is insane!
What? Why are you claiming that AF and IBIS are new tech for Z cameras? That is not true at all. Not sure if this is related to the issue Manny noticed with the IBIS but Nikon cameras required third party lenses to disable VR on tripods.
@@phelanwolf6747 This is Nikons very first Mirrorless FF Pro camera. First IBIS first AF tech they didn’t have this same tech in their DSLR’s. Remember the Canon and Sony both had their teething problems and over heated like crazy. Also you can disable IBIS with any Nikon lens in the Z Cameras in the menus.
Glad you're (mostly) enjoying the Z9. Love mine. Aesthetics are personal -- I think the lenses are beautiful. But on the inside, they're all business. There's no need for 1.4s; the 1.8s are excellent. I believe you'll see Nikon/Nikkor pursue the 1.2 aperture of the Z 50mm f/1.2, which has unbelievably beautiful rendering. Menus? Perhaps because I've shot Nikon for 4 decades and am familiar with their digital camera menus from day 1 they're the most familiar and practical to me. No need to deep dive; use the I menu and set that up how you like it. Use banks to set up for different scenarios..
I thought the lens design issue was kind of off base. This is a Pro body not a Fuji retro camera. And these Z lenses are just crushing the performance barriers. For a Pro that is all that should count. Besides I like the minimal sleek design. The F1.4 glass is something that has me thinking about. I am wondering if they will skip f1.4 and go straight to F1.2. Nikon talked about the Z mount being designed for faster glass so that would fit the idea. They already have the 501.2 and the 85 1.2 is coming soon. Will we see a Z mount 105mm F1.4 ?
I wouldn't expect f/1.4 primes from Nikon going forward. f/1.8 and f/1.2 only would be my guess. The former are more compact and still have fantastic performance, whereas if you need the ultimate in shallow DOF and light gathering, then you go to the f/1.2 series. An f/1.4 splits the difference, but really isn't necessary anymore with the high ISO performance of Nikon's FF sensors. One last thing folks should keep in mind: The large diameter of the Z mount enables more exotic designs, and better quality designs that can be achieved more cost effectively (Sony's E-Mount was originally designed for APS-C and will eventually run into limitations). The fact that Nikon has been able to patent two designs for f/1.2 zoom lenses is telling of what they expect to be able to achieve with the Z-Mount in the future.
Nikon is doing okay, but to be honest, Sony, Sigma, and Tamron are really the ones crushing performance barriers... For example, that 50mm 1.2 you're talking about? Sony's 50mm 1.2 has comparable IQ to the Nikon (and better AF) despite being the smaller, lighter, and cheaper of the two. And Sony managed to do it with that tiny E mount. Tamron's 35-150 2-2.8 is super interesting, and their 28-75 2.8 presents pretty much unmatched value. Sigma's 24-70 is as good or better than Sony's comparable GM version. That's not even getting into all of the dirt cheap, reasonably good quality primes from Samyang, Viltrox, etc.
@@sasca854 The Sony 50 f/1.2 also suffers from significant focus breathing, something that doesn't plague the Nikon at all. That was by design. As to crushing performance barriers, Nikon's new Holy Trinity of Z-Series f/2.8 zooms optically outperform every other manufacturer on the market as of this writing...including Leica. Tamron's 35-150 is interesting, but the problem is twofold: 1) Optical compromises; 2) Mechanical build quality (where Tamron has traditionally cut corners to keep costs down, a strategy they've employed for the past 45 years). A Tamron lens will not take the same level of abuse that a Nikkor or a G-Master lens can withstand. And, yes, Sony did a good job with their FE 50mm f/1.2 GM lens, but they're about at the limit of their capability now with that mount. More exotic lens designs will be more difficult to engineer and will cost more money (that will eventually get passed on to consumers). Nikon very deliberately engineered the Z mount to be significantly larger for good reasons.
I am personally a fan of the behind the scenes photoshoots because I wish I could do things that creative but the camera reviews are also informative which is good. I think I might just keep the idea of possibly being as good as many a dream. The time and effort he puts into his content is unmatched in my opinion.
I’ve been a Nikon shooter for 10 years and was very excited for this camera. In fact, before purchasing my Z9, I was using a Z7 for my food & headshot photography, but for events I purchased an R5 since the Z7’s autofocus could not keep up. Although the Z9 is definitely a large improvement over the Z7, it still struggles. Unfortunately nighttime autofocus is non-existent on this camera. It hunts and hunts.. then hunts some more. 8/10 shots are slightly out of focus or completely out of focus, where as 9.9/10 of the R5’s photos were tack sharp.
You are comparing first gen z7 camera to a R5 which is second iteration of Canon mirrorless range so you should not compare something like this just wait for Nikon to come out with an update everything takes time look at how long it took canon to make a better camera but still it’s night life image falls apart against Nikon and Sony.
What kind of glass/af settings are you using? I've used my d4 in night time shoots and dark reception halls for weddings, and it is able to find focus most of the time, even without dj lights
You click the (i) button to get fast access to AF settings. Nikon menus are not confusing - its like you said your not used to them. I remember using a Canon camera and thinking the same - it was just because I wasn't used to it.
Thanks, Manny. Excellent and objective input to the Z9 conversation. (Also, hands down, the best production quality of any photography RUclipsr. [Insert 80s slow clap])
I have been watching your videos since you started out…I’ve noticed the sleek set designs and high production quality of your videos. Really seems like you are putting 100% into everything. Keep up the excellent work.
Respect for you because you gave Nikon a chance and realized that it is not trash. No biased, not leaning to any manufacturer too much. I shoot Nikon but would love to try the R7 or R10 as well, unfortunately does not have the option to be sponsored to try, but thumbs up for you.
Dude. Great job on this one. Fair analysis and feedback. The S line is the new reference for Nikon glass.....and if you could get your hands on a NOCT, just to try it out for your portraits that's platinum. And we'd love to hear your feedback. 3rd party lenses will come.
Awesome Video Manny. Congrats on the Nikon Z9. We would love to have you on Vahagraphy Talk. Who here wants Manny on as a special guest? I DO!! Let's Rock n Roll!!!!!! 🤘🏼 🤘🏼 🤘🏼
I think your concern for aesthetics is warranted. You’re holding something. You’re looking at something. You want to feel good using it. Yes, it’s a tool, but our connection to our tools is not just for what we use them for - but also how we feel using them. I think the Z9 and the R3, in their own way, have blended ergonomic use and design into beautiful styling.
105mm f2.8 S micro, 85mm/50mm f1.8 S, are all top glass. They're Zeiss Otus level quality even. F-mount 24mmG f1.8, 28mmE f1.4, 105mmE f.14 are also money.
If the soon to be released NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S Lens lives up to the standard set by the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S Lens, Nikon will have made a huge statement. Nikon, being an optics company first and a camera company second, should be able to pull it off. And if costs keep going up, Canon and Sony may lose customers to Fujifilm and Nikon, especially if gas prices go up. This implies that everything will go up in price because of Europe's current and unfortunate political and economic climate.
Z9 is 1390g (with batt and card) + Nikon 50 1.2S is 1090g is already 2480g. I can't imagine Nikon 85 1.2S would be less than 1300g??? Need to go to the gym more often.
I have been waiting on your review of the Z9. I figured you would be honest. Really like your reviews, being a Nikon shooter my entire photography journey. This truly helps. I have picked up a Canon and I found it to be very confusing, being that I had only used Nikon. Guess I am use to the Menu from Nikon. Still I can't justify buying the Z9 being that I don't do video.
Right with you Arwin >> I also dont do Video but I love the fact there is no Mehanical shutter >> so IF I can save enough and sell my Z7 and 14-30 f4 S then my last ever camera I am 71 and been Nikon for 50years
Honestly, I am waiting on what is coming next. I have 2 Z6' s and 50mm 1.8S, 85mm 1.8S, and the 24-70mm F4S, plus a lot of old Nikon lens that I adapt. I think the Z6III is coming in October, or something with less than what the Z9 is offering. With the same auto focusing ability. I Love the images I get out of my Z6s, just wishing for better low light capability.
@@arvinoutlaw1189 I think there will be a z8 which will be a smaller z9 with some features cut out that will compete against the R5. I am in a dilemma because I can have a z9 tomorrow... some where assign to my country. But the price is very high. I really need internal 10 bit at least, and I don't know if I can wait another year.
I haven't shot with those particular 3 cameras but I have shot digital with all three brands and, of the cameras I shot with, I liked the skin tones best on the Nikon, then the Sony, and lastly the Canon. Now, this was years ago so things might have changed but at the time I used several different models of camera from each brand, models that were a few years apart in tech and still found similar skin color. The only problem I had with the Canon was some overly magenta skin tones. I didn't feel one way or another about the Sony skin tones. The Nikon seemed the most pleasing. Manny, you might consider doing a skin tone test of all three systems under varying lighting, direct sunlight, shade, overcast, flash, studio strobes or hot or LED studio lights. (if possible with different brand lights). I'd also like to see someone do a test of shooting with and without a lens hood. (I'm very pro lens hood), I'm also very pro using high quality multi-coated filters when needed, and neutral colored ND or Polarizing filters. An interesting test is to lay out the filters on a piece of white paper and see that some aren't neutral but can be green tinged, bluish or warm tinged.)
Ibis is supposed to be turned off when the camera is statically mounted. Even Panasonic & Olympus stabilisation (the best in the business) is done this way.
man, the last 3 min...i struggle with that in my videos...all. the. time. but excellent video review on the Z9. I found that you 'really' have to be use to Nikon's menu system to kinda get an idea of where everything is at. When I went from the D750 to the Z6, it was pretty refreshing but Nikon definitely made sure someone that stayed Nikon would be familiar with it. Not sure if I'm the only one that noticed that but the transition from DSLR to Mirrorless (from Nikon) was a breeze. I think some day, I'll get the Z9 in my hands for more than 30 days! lol
As far as bags for gripped bodies go, Tenba Axis 24L has been the perfect bag. Carrying around the Z9 with 24 - 70 attached + one other small lens? F-stop pro small as a shoulder bag.
The Z9 is just such a nice looking and feeling object, and for me that makes it a pleasure to use and makes me pick it up all the time just for the sake of it. It's tactile and expensive feeling
Really great review, very informative of real world use. Manny, I know you're probably interested in the S line of lenses, but there are some Nikkor 1.4 F Mount glass that is to die for that can be adapted to the Z9, mainly the 105 1.4. I don't know for myself, but there are others who have said it actually performs better on the Z mount than the F Mount, and I believe it. Also, I think some firmware updates will fix some of the issues you mentioned, in fact, it was said during WPPI that a firmware update this year will allow 8K 12-bit recording internal, and for any filmmaker having that capability at the Z9's price point is insane!!
@@faisalghiar Yes man, you’re right! That’s another that has rave reviews about how well it performs adapted to the Z mount. It’s still a dream lens of mine…
Thanks for this review & showing the eye af in low light/thumbs up for Nikon here &, mentioning the ibis while using the slider. Great info. Price point is pretty good.
Man, your creative side is really taking off lately. I mean this is top quality stuff with the sci-fi theme. Love it! Do it again with some gorgeous sci-fi chicks this time! 🤗
Manny, I just gotta say... A while ago you talked about being in a creative rut, but lately I feel like you've been making your best videos yet. I love what you're doing with these light tubes and just the overall vibe. I'm glad you're still doing your thing
Your video production skills are really good. Great photo images in this video as well. It was informative and entertaining at the same time to watch. I use Nikon since 2012 and the menus are not confusing to me. The custom settings menu is for options that you can customize for the camera and the general menu is like for global settings. The "i" menu gives you quick access to settings (is also customizable).
Great video thanks again.I have the z9 and am a Nikon shooter, and recently tried the r3 love the feel and found it nice to use ,But kept some how cropping and changing the exposure compensate other than that it was great ,for me the Nikon just works 😊👍
Nice video. Good to hear the opinion of someone that uses all the flagships for an extended period that translates to a real review. That mirror-like backdrop is 🔥🔥🔥
I can't really get over people who can drop almost 6 grand on a body, yet worries about enthuasits level lenses looked too low profile. Just look at how good the 105 macro prime is. If that doesn't get you excited about future prime release you might want to consider the option to just leave this system immediately and do not venture further. I'm sure plenty people wouldn't mind to have that body since the waiting list is so long.
In school, our professor always told us to turn off any instabllizer in our camera because when you are shooting hand held, the camera's instablizer is already working to compensate for any shaking that is occurring. If on a tripod and with the inbody stabilizer on; the camera will will begin to tremble because it's trying to feel out the shaking. So on my Nikon cameras; I always turned off my V/R (vibration reduction) off that were built into my lens. So yeah, I hope this helps someone out there.
About their menus: Nikon has never been a powerhouse for video up until maybe now. Their menus worked well for many years on the DSLR side considering they were not as complex as it is required now. So yeah, I think Nikon needs to improve the menu interface with a re-design that better integrates it's new video features.
Agree! Need to add that Sony, until now, finally have improved their menus and they have been on the mirrorless side more that Nikon and Canon. So, I would say that Nikon it's on a better shape that others, and they just need to do some minor tweaks to get on point.
Yes and no, they do have the one switch action to move from video to photo since the z6. The z6 has completely changed my video shooting style. I went from full rig with sticks etc, to the camera and a cage and two rods system handheld for 90% of my shots. With the I menu, I can shoot without leaving the viewfinder at all. The only thing I would like for video would be to be able to assign the video speed, that is if it make transition faster or slower. One thing they have reintroduce, but I don't know yet how it works for video is customize banks.
brother those Nikon Z Lenses are spectacular... one big quirk about the Viltrox 85mm is that it's motor is subject to failure and you're STUCK!! (I've had 2 lenses that did that) not he mention the CA on that is terrible... get the Nikon 85mm and you'll se how razor sharp it it. (no caveat) it's slow to focus in low light but on the Z9 that seems to go away... after about 30 day you should be use to any system change and it really shouldn't be a big deal. the real question is: CAPABILITIES.. and the Z9 is surely CAPABLE. and not lacking.... good luck shooting but seriously consider using the Z Glass...
A few things, which I'm sure you know but others may not. 1) Nikon states in the manual to turn IBIS off when the camera is mounted to a tripod to prevent unintended results. I wouldn't consider this a glitch since it's designed to be turned off in those scenarios. 2) The lenses you bought aren't pro lenses, you'll get better AF results with pro glass. 3) When the camera was focusing on the lens and you stated it thought it was an eye: You had the camera in Auto subject detection mode which looks for People, Animals and Vehicles, it's difficult to say what it thought the lens was, but it's clearly the wrong focus mode to be in for that scene.
Unfortunately that jitter was the reason why I was about to switch to the last Nikon z camera and ended up returning it and staying with Sony. I feel like Nikon fakes most of the stabilization digitally, even if just partially, and nobody seems to talk about that, it’s a fake ibis, and that jitter even happens when the camera is static and fast objects are moving in front of the lens, it makes the fake digital ibis think the camera is moving when is not.
I understand but that’s not a big issue to leave my gun. Manny just said he’s thinking about making it his number one studio camera. Not a big issue at all.
Nikon does not fake the IBIS - it is 5 axis sensor shift tech. My Z6II automatically senses when the camera is on a tripod and turns IBIS off - this is what all the cameras do. Manny's issue on the slider might be faking out Nikon's auto shut off because there is movement IDK, but if so this can likely be fixed in firmware and honestly it is really easy to turn off IBIS manually right from the i button on the camera. It is great that Manny brought this up, but it is truly a non-issue. In general Nikon IBIS works really well and although the CIPA rating is 6 stops compared to Canon's 7/8 some independent photo tests have demonstrated than Nikon is better -IDK about this but I have seen these independent reviews - either way Nikon IBIS is up to par - this is beyond doubt.
I’m confused. It’s not a digital stabilization issue. Even so, Nikon has always recommended turn off ibis when on tripod but it does usually recognize and turns it off on its own.
Yeah from the video world, we always turn off IBIS when on tripod. For the very reason you are experiencing...some platforms are more sensitive than others, but I imagine its a software thing that Nikon could fix and so far it appears Sony and canon are better with...but again simple solution, turn it off...no biggie. I'd love to see more video footage comparisons between them since you have em all. I personally was thinking the z9 might be a great option over the r5c, because no cripple hammer...they put EVERYTHING into it and has amazing photos and battery life. But yeah, I already have an R5 and love it, but not so much for video work which is my primary focus.
Nice review. If you keep the Z 9 as studio camera, then you do not have a need for 1.2 or 1.4 lenses. Note that these numbers are academic (in the meaning of theoretical). If you made these lenses using black glass then the f/number stayed the same. This is why the industry came up with the T-stop that indicates how much light really comes through. IN the DxO Mark website you may see that a 1.4 from this brand has a T-stop of 1.5 and a 1.2L from another brand also has a T-stop of 1.5. We do not notice this as the camera measures exposure through the lens. And now with an eVF we do not see a darker viewfinder for these deviations. Yes but Depth of Field (DoF) you say. Well, that depends on the Circle of Confusion (CoC - its diameter). And that depends on a few things: the resolution of your camera and lens but also how large you depict your image and at what distance it will be looked at. Pixel peeping at 200% at a 1' distance (tiny CoC) is another story than looking at a 100% print at 7' (large CoC). Generally, in the studio we would shoot at 5.6 or 8, or even 11. The background being even toned or having a smooth gradation, there's no need for detail there. The 5.6..11 range makes sure your subject is sharp from the tip of the nose to the back of the ears. Of course we sometimes deviate from the principle, e.g. to render bad skin unsharp. "We" needed the fast lenses for our SLR cameras as these lenses actually doubled as the main lens of our viewfinders. A 1.4 would give a much brighter viewfinder than a 2.8 lens (4 times). One reason for me to never use zooms. I do not expect Nikon to still come up with 1.4 primes in the Z system. The 1.8 lenses are perfect, optically, and a 1.4 lens would become significantly larger and heavier while the difference in light transmission is about 0.5 f/stop and on a mirrorless camera that is totally meaningless. The size and weight increase is due to modern requirements and improved sharpness and almost absent chromatic aberration all at the same time. Boring design? It's functional and does not distract and I feel no need to compensate something. You can even see that some third party lens manufacturers have been inspired by this new Nikon lens design. It reminds of the Bauhaus architecture style period - less is more and form follows function. Just put gaffer tape over the camera's brand name. Say no to clients asking, what camera did you use, instead of wow, nice pictures. Third party lenses? My recurring rant of the past 45 years with Nikon was: (a) chromatic aberration and (b) tint/character differences between lenses. Robustness and reliability, check. Sharpness, check. Professional precision, check. The Z system addresses both (a) and (b) and does that very well.
From the sounds of your menu problems, look into the "My Menu" abilities. You can put all those frequently used, or even occasionally used functions there to quickly find them. You're also not limited to one "MM", for you have the ability to setup several different ones.
If you push the ( i ) button that is where you can find all your fast access to buttons so need to deep dive in menus. You can have the camera up to your face and move the buttons around. I think it will be good to have a 6 month review. I have been shooting Nikon for 15yrs and its like anything else once you have time with it and set it up it flows like water. Keep rocking Welcome to NIkon ha ha .
I just ordered mine yesterday (: I'm a wildlife photographer, so very excited to come from my Nikon D850 DLSR to a flagship mirrorless. I have no idea when the next shipping dates are for US, so I may have my order in, but could be a very long time before it's in my hands lol. Great video Manny.
My husband and I both shoot Weddings together- I went from Canons into Sony ,and now a mix of both brands for me with the Canon R5. My husband has been a die hard Nikon loyalist who for years shot by the "F8 and be there " motto- when he might want a shallow DOF with lots of bokeh, he would by necessity have me do those shots because his bodies would never give us enough material to sort through with the eyes in critical focus, while my Sonys and the R5 would do it with ease- our biggest problem with the Sony bodies and the R5 was sorting thru thousands of shots in perfect focus with perhaps 1 or 2 % soft while we would sort thru hundreds of Nikon shots with approx a 10-15% AF soft or out of focus rate. The work flow difference was dramatic. Now that he's got the Z9 ,we see a dramatic increase in AF keepers and numbers of total shots, yet we both agree that the Z9 is still a bit behind the Sony A,9 ii ,( we don't have a A1 yet) and Canon R5 ( and the R5 is about 1800 dollar's less while using a sensor that isn't BSI) It's clearly Nikons best AF body, but now we're also experiencing the same HSS problems that we've been reading about on one forum by multiple users and we're hoping for a fix or we'll be forced to sell it. All in all, even he admits that stubborn brand loyalty may have really hurt us and he missed out on several years of the other brands advantages.
I shoot weddings also and never seem to have issues with out of focus shots with my Nikon Z6 or Z6II…maybe down to technique. I now use a Z9 also and don’t see the autofocus as lagging. I have watched many reviewers state that the auto focus of the Z9 is right there with the Canon and the Sony so your claims again of lagging might come down to not having the camera dialed in for what you or he shoots. Weddings aren’t fast like sports and wildlife so if you struggle with focus, learn your tools and stop with the hype cause it is really getting old. Nikon bashing is the in thing and not warranted for types of photography.
My first camera was a Nikon APSC and then I switches to Fujifilm. Now I bought a Canon R6 and a 15-35 f2.8 and a 85mm f1.2 and I'm blown away by Canon. I'm still very interested in Nikon and want them to succeed, just because their files are amazing, even on entry level cameras like I used to have. Hopefully they'll release some Pro Glass to keep up with Canon and Sony.
you can create tier own menu with the Nikon and add the features you use the most. As to menu systems, if you are new to a system it will take sometime to get use to where settings are, its like switching from apple to Samsung. Though no camera brand is as intuitive as Apple OS. I use Nikon, but every brand has is pro's and cons, and they will ALL give you excellent results if you know what your doing. I think when you hear that Nikon makes the best lenses or Sony has the best Auto Focus or Canon has the best video, you automatically thing the other brands are bad at those attributes. Sony may have the best AF, but that doesn't mean that Canon and Nikon have BAD AF. At this point in time, all these brands are excellent, but if you are invested in glass and other brand specific gadgets, it would be crazy to switch brands for a new camera body.
I'm a lil biased because I'm a Nikon shooter but I like for the other brands in different ways. You give an honest review on your Sony and canon cameras and I like how you break down the specs for each brand ✊🏿👍🏿
I learned a trick for cellphones for "training" stabilization. Turn on your camera with a small lens on it and wave it around in a "figure 8" pattern for a minute or two. What this does is to set the limits of the travel range. It might work on the Z9. . . .
Thank you for your insight and sharing your thoughts on this camera. The wait time is killing me so much I had been thinking about switching to Canon :)
The new light bar setup thingy that ur doing is SO FUCKING SICK like genuinely it’s such a nice visual and a nice break from the usual talking head in a studio of RUclips.
Nice I have the A1 and the z9 and I am lusting for the r3 the canon 85 1:2 has my attention. Good point about the third-party glass for the Z nine very limited at the moment. Changing the subject what do you think about the Sigma 1.485 mm art is that the best 85 for the Sony system I have the G master 85 to be honest I’m not very happy with it also have the baddest 85 1.8 which for the compact size image quality is amazing but something is missing with the 85s what’s your thoughts
Great to see your insights on the Z9 Manny! It seems that you are really able to understand and visualize the power on this machine. Totally agree on the lens design, "black tubes" its a true but sad way to put it. Really don't know why Nikon is thinking those primes are looking cool when they are not. They really should reflect the strong Nikon personality through the lens line-up. Quality can be found inside the lenses, but not reflected on the outside design in my opinion. There's where Sony and mainly Canon are shining.
Haha, I would say the same thing about Sony menu, can’t find things even after five years of usage. Nikon menu is pretty intuitive to me, maybe Z9 is more complicated. Never use Canon, don’t know. I use Sony A7R4, A7C, A7 IV and Nikon Z6 ii. Yeah, Nikon lens line up is pretty sad at present time. I am using adapted F mount prime and hope to see some f1.4 prime; and hope to be able to use Zeiss, Sigma and Voigtlander. Why Nikon has f0.95 and f1.2 before f1.4 is beyond me.
Hey Manny, can you share some insight into the colors in this Nikon shot (3:24) and the Canon one afterwards? Are colors straight out of camera with no edits? Canon's looked incredible
Manny, I saw an FE Sony Lens adapter, Megadap ETZ21 Pro, for the Z9 the other day. The You Tube photographer, Jonathan Casey, actually claimed that the Z9 might be the best Sony camera today with that adapter with Sony lenses.
Thanks for a nice and fair review. I have a Z9 in my bag right now. Have used it for the last four to five weeks and have to return it to Nikon on Wednesday. :( The only thing I do not agree with was first the note about complicated menu… then you said it might be biased… and I remember having the same issues we itch Sony and Canon when I test them. I am a Nikon photographer and are used to Nikon menu. The other thing I disagree is the lens design … but maybe your are right! My 85mm 1.8 with the hood ob looks kind of boring compared to the 85mm 1.4 I sold when going full to Nikon mirrorless. But there are Z lenses that looks better :)
I thought the lens design issue was kind of childish to be honest. This is a Pro body not a Fuji retro camera. And these Z lenses are just crushing the performance barriers. For a Pro that is all that should count. Besides I like the minimal sleek design.
Anything, like the ibis glitch, is important if it impacts your workflow. Hopefully, Nikon will fix it in firmware, but you have a workaround for now. As far as menu items, you can customize with “my menu”. Glass is an issue, but it should be fixed in about a year.
Totally Agree. They should've never gotten rid of the gold ring. You got these expensive lenses, you can't take to an event or something when there are other photographers with Red rings. Totally kills the mojo.
A dirty feed on the Z9, that’s a nice touch. Anytime you make a major switch, I just totally switched from Nikon and Fuji to Sony, but my advantage is I owned all three systems and had the Sony system for a year, before totally going all in with over $7200 in Sony glass, it’s hard to just shut off your brain from the other systems. When I owned all three, I found myself picking up Nikon and Fuji first and I felt more comfortable with them being a Nikon shooter for decades and a Fuji shooter for three years. Fuji came natural because I still shoot film, from a Nikon f4, but overall the choice became which system will be the end game for photography and videography and Sony and Canon offered pro level video cameras, Fuji and Nikon do not. I shot Canon before Nikon in the early 80s. I will just be buying three more g masters lenses and I’m done. I will be buying 5 Sony specific Cinema lenses for the eventual move to the fx6 or fx9, but I will use my other Sony glass until then. I looked at third party support and everything before making this decision and a move to Canon RF would have been even more expensive with questionable third party support as well. I will eventually go to a fx6 or fx9 as an end game, but for now I shoot blackmagic for video. This was a hard decision to make and yes, I miss Nikon like crazy, the menu system, the colors it was super easy, followed by Fuji. My son still owns Nikon so I can get my digital fix and shoot Nikon film for relaxation. We tend to go to what we are familiar with and yes, I almost bought the Z9, but I stuck that money into Sony glass instead because I already own two Sony bodies and this move to one system has been three years in the making. Will I ever own Nikon or Fuji again, I can never say never, because I never thought I would ever own Sony.
Nice one for putting the outtakes on the end :) What is the electronic music at 9:25 pleas. We also got a z9 because it's just cool to try state of the art tech, it is a thing of beauty when you think back to 90's technology
My next two cameras within the next year are to be the Sony a7iv and Nikon Z9. Not to say if Sony comes out with something different that may change but the Z9 is happening.
My guy! Thank you for the love you've given the Z9 and Nikon. Can't wait for more positive and encouraging news and content from you about Nikon, keep up awesome work.
Yeah I agree with you. Its great to see some Z9 videos out there. Nikon needs more attention. Cheers from LA? What camera are you currently using?
Im proud of all the creators giving honest reviews of this camera.. good job!
Factssssssss have to give credit where its due.
Actually a person who do work rest of his life with one or two brands particularly, how can be so honest about third brand?
An actual “ unbiased” review
@@chrisvig123 nope its an Actual semi bised review...
Firmware updates will make things even better but for straight out of the box use this was a great camera to experience!
if you think this camera is heavy the camera is clearly not for you.
@@Juventinos Exactly, you are right!
The aesthetics of this video are absolutely stunning
Nikon ergonomics have always felt right... no other camera system has the colors Nikon has.
True and nikon has worst autofocus system from its inception and till date.

Have you early used early versions of Sony, Panasonic and Fuji autofocus they were no where near the speed of Nikon 3D autofocus only Canons dual pixel was hood but only for portrait photography not for wildlife if you don’t know any anything about dslr than you shouldn’t be commenting I guess you have a short memory,it has only been 3yrs since Sony 7 III that Sony started leading and that just one aspect of photography. ergonomics, weather sealing, lenses both Nikon 300+ and Canon more lens options than Sony, try using F mount 105 1.4 or the 200 f2 you’ll understand and not to forget the 3D pop micro contrasts Nikon images provide there is a reason National Geographic’s photography use Nikon as there main gear it has a history behind it and well worth the investment there was a time in 1970 that you would see any camera in the hands of journalists other than Nikon with the Z9 they seem to have came ahead of Canon because there is no other flagship that can compete A1 video quality is bad and it has flicker issue on top of the heating issue plus the cards are expensive I’m sure you have not forgotten hot shoe issue and canon is behind a full one year for it release of R1 which is slated for sometime in 2023 so yes Nikon is leading be jealous :)

There are some great f-mount lenses that you can use on the Z9, like the 105mm f/1.4 for example.
Yes my exact thought, and I hear that it performs better on the Z9...
105 can't resolve 45 megapixels. why would you use it on a Z9? Sigma 105 instead.
@@Tap-a-roo No issue on the D850…
I have a z5 and ibis on tripods and other still situations is just weird but really a non issue for mostly everyone. One day hope to have a z9.
@@sawyerhaupt You turn ibis off on the tripod? What is Nikon's recommendation for vr on a tripod?
@@RobertFalconer1967 pls which 1.2 zoms has nikon patented?
I already have the 50 1.2 so am eager for more.
it will be a f1.2
Faisal he is comparing the AF to the Z9 not the Z7. You have just misread what he has written.
Hasn’t been my experience with the Z9 at all,. I’ve shot in dark conditions at night with only available light and it found the subject pretty easy.
No AF struggles with the Z9 in low light whatsoever.

Manny, I loved those slomo shots of the Nikon Z9.
Bro the quality of this video was insane, massive improvement my guy 🔥❤️
I think your concern for aesthetics is warranted. You’re holding something. You’re looking at something. You want to feel good using it. Yes, it’s a tool, but our connection to our tools is not just for what we use them for - but also how we feel using them. I think the Z9 and the R3, in their own way, have blended ergonomic use and design into beautiful styling.
Manny some of those features like the AF speed you were looking for can be added to my menu for faster access.
Good to watch your thoughts still curious to know those you have about the Nikon 28-75 too. 👌
So creative - the ending was the icing on the cake!
105mm f2.8 S micro, 85mm/50mm f1.8 S, are all top glass. They're Zeiss Otus level quality even. F-mount 24mmG f1.8, 28mmE f1.4, 105mmE f.14 are also money.
I have the 50 and it is out of this world, the simple design grows on you too.
You will gonna be doing video soon, hence, you need the Z9
As a Nikon shooter, I always followed you regardless if you were Sony or Canon cause you make great content.
Manny you hit it on the nail about the aesthetics of the lens! I just don’t like the way the Nikon lenses look but the Z9 body looks awesome
Ibis is supposed to be turned off when the camera is statically mounted. Even Panasonic & Olympus stabilisation (the best in the business) is done this way.
I feel you on the 85 1.8 tube look but the 24-70 2.8 looks dope and performs like a champ
Appreciate the bloopers at the end.. let's me know I'm not the only one lol
man, the last 3 min...i struggle with that in my videos...all. the. time.
but excellent video review on the Z9.
As well the 200mm F2 I know it’s expansive it’s a legend for a reason
@@faisalghiar Yes man, you’re right! That’s another that has rave reviews about how well it performs adapted to the Z mount. It’s still a dream lens of mine…

Man, your creative side is really taking off lately. I mean this is top quality stuff with the sci-fi theme. Love it! Do it again with some gorgeous sci-fi chicks this time! 🤗
Z9 (and R3?) have illuminated buttons on the back of the camera, which is probably a plus when shooting in dim studios or live performance settings.
I just received my Z9. I love it!
You can quickly get to frame rates by hitting the i button without being in the menus.
That mirror-like backdrop is 🔥🔥🔥
Would love to see you review on that Viltrox 85mm. Thanks for this one!
So on my Nikon cameras; I always turned off
my V/R (vibration reduction) off that were built into my lens.
Non-issue,this camera is the best in the world!! Go Nikon!!!!
Nice video production. You sound pretty honest, for sure all of them are great machines (even Leica, Fuji, Phase One, Hasselblad, etc.).
brother those Nikon Z Lenses are spectacular... one big quirk about the Viltrox 85mm is that it's motor is subject to failure and you're STUCK!!
I have this camera and a z7II. Never had this issue. Even on tripods.
Still using my D4s without issues, enjoy your Nikon!!!!
Just use all the already available f mount glass, even from the sigma art series, the best option is buy it with the FTZ adapter and enjoy it.
Now that he's got the Z9 ,we see a dramatic increase in AF keepers and numbers of total shots, yet we both agree that the Z9 is still a bit behind the Sony A,9 ii ,( we don't have a A1 yet) and Canon R5 ( and the R5 is about 1800 dollar's less while using a sensor that isn't BSI)
It's clearly Nikons best AF body, but now we're also experiencing the same HSS problems that we've been reading about on one forum by multiple users and we're hoping for a fix or we'll be forced to sell it.

It might work on the Z9. . . .
Mr. Ortiz, If the only option you had was to select one camera - Sony A1, Nikon Z9, or Canon R5, what would be your choice?
where did you learn about that EVF?
you trying to glean knowledge from this page huh? lol
When 🤘🏼 Jared Polin 🤘🏼 leaves a comment on your video that means you've made it! :) hehe
Great honest video , very encouraging as I am still waiting for my Z9 in the Uk . Thank you 🙏
Nikon Z8 or Z7 III , I'm waiting for yoooou

Voigtlander just announced they are creating lenses for the Z mount. They will be manual focus only however.
You did a crazy good job on this.
All Gitzo and F-stop camera bags are deep enough to fit cameras with grips or large, pro DSLRs or mirrorless cameras like R3 or Z9.
The evolution of cameras over the years is so fucking unreal!!
Manny with the Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems lighting. LOL.
To me white lenses on the Canon and Sony look really ugly if paired with a black body.
Man your set up is fire!!!🔥
The B Roll in this video is on another level
Thanks for a nice and fair review. I have a Z9 in my bag right now. Have used it for the last four to five weeks and have to return it to Nikon on Wednesday. :(
The only thing I do not agree with was first the note about complicated menu… then you said it might be biased… and I remember having the same issues we itch Sony and Canon when I test them.
Yes when I see a group of press photographers I always try to see what cameras they have.
That gold ring was great
A dirty feed on the Z9, that’s a nice touch.
