Thanks for a straight up review. I'm a Nikon shooter and just got my Z 9 and also own a Z 6 II and Z 7 II. I really like all three cameras, but the Z 9 is so much more advanced than the other two and the autofocus is off the chain. The Z9 will be my primary camera with the Z 7 II being me secondary shooter and the Z 6 II being for mainly video and as a backup to the primary and secondary.
Z7II shooter here as well. Was gonna pull the trigger in the z9 pre release but decided to wait a bit and I instead purchased some lenses. The z9 or if there's a z9ii in the future I will definitely be purchasing.
Sometimes I wish people will not just judge how good a camera is by only how fast and accurate the eye focus is. Yes, it's important but there's a lot more to a great camera than just nailing the eye. I remember shooting with film cameras and manual lenses. I learnt a lot more about how to shoot back then. A camera is way more than auto-focus.
I’m shooting a z6ii and totally waiting for the tech to trickle down to a camera that is about the size of z6 or z7. Even if it has a few less features than the z9. Better autofocus, longer video record times and an updated sensor is all I would need.
A1 is king ? Not in my book, not in the video category at least. As for I me, I did just the opposite. I sold my Sony camera and the few lenses I had few years ago, and switched to Nikon - couldn't be happier. Nice beefy camera, great durability, and don't have to worry about the "failed shutter mechanism" that plagued a certain model of Sony camera.
@@mikeyraysivak4607 king of shooting speed, AF accuracy, variable shutter, dynamic range, lenses availability and selection, light weight, EVF, and has a shutter when absolutely need like with certain flash situations and banding situations in with Z9 has no solution for at this time. Hopefully nikon will be able to improve and im confident they will but its sad they released it with these issues.
@3:21 As a Canon R3 owner. Since I shoot mostly photos with that camera. I'll prefer the Nikon Z9 flip screen. There's times where I'll shoot over the head high, and low profile low. I don't trust the Canon R3 flip screen for that due to the hazards I put my cameras in.
Curious if you’d had a chance to compare Raws, been very skeptical of their lossless compression and how it affects the dynamic range of the image, have you done any side by side tests, comparing image quality and how far you can push each raw and if there’s a noticeable difference ?
I like your candid take on these things. I'm waiting for the R5 to come back in stock so that I can pair it with my RP which is honestly enough camera for 90% of what I do, especially when shooting with controlled portrait lighting. Eventually I'll probably add the R3 or something equivalent but I'm not in a hurry.
you had one exceptional line in this video. 'when the tech in the Z9 starts to trickle down to other Nikon models...'. Nikon has been behind for a while but looks to have caught up. I will be happy to see the technology continue to improve and roll down to other cameras.
In terms of weight, the Z9 is definitely a tank. Could some of that weight be used for thermals for video (8k30p @ 2hrs 5mins)? Who knows? lol. After using mine for a few weeks it's a nice balance with their lenses.
You're killing it! Can't tell you how tired I am of RUclips reviewers of these two cameras reading off spec sheets. You're also right when you point at the fact that all three manufacturers are head to head. The A1, Z9, and R3 are all super capable tools. In the end, it comes down to where your preferences are with regard to ergonomics, ease of use, megapixels, dynamic range, or frames per second. Thanks for this review!
Don't forget lens choice, which is also a big factor. A few years ago lots of photographers were switching from Nikon and Canon to Sony. I don't see this happening anywhere near as much now, with the new cameras they both have, especially canon. If I was still Canon I would not switch to Sony like I did two years ago.
@@nickwilliams6716 Agreed. I switched from a Canon 5D Mk IV to an R3 and my old (manual) Zeiss Milvus lenses work like a charm with the Canon adapter. I like the fact that I can still use my old EF lenses if I choose to.
That last sentence can be weighed in Gold! I'm a Nikon shooter first, but still I recognize the advantages any of the 3 top dogs have over the other. They're all excellent image making machines and if you have any of them you are in control of a marvelous tool! It is indeed a even playing field.
@9:09 In regards of the eye control focusing for the R3. I'm speaking this as a glasses wearer, and a month using the R3. I feel like the eye control focusing works like 80% of the time. Like, I REALLY need to be accurate on how I place my eye to the EVF. If I'm off by a millimeter, the focusing point won't move where I want it to be. Also, I sweat pretty badly when the assignment gets more intense. That if I get sweat on my glasses. My eye control focusing doesn't work properly. added: Forgot to add. maybe I really have to keep on calibrating my eye control focusing at every new space I get myself into during the weddings.
How does the eye AF work with glasses? Everyone raves about Sony autofocus, but when I rented the A7R4 and 35mm GM, 90% of eye AF missed when my subject is wearing glasses.
I love my eye auto focus but tbh its mostly still a gimic, there are rare situations where eye auto focus was the difference between getting the shot and missing it
Lol OK, u must have a Z9 to say something so silly because i use nothing but eye AF with the A1 and the focus just nails it lightning fast and accurate.
Great video!! You mentioned focusing on the bright background instead of the person in front of you with the other Nikons. On my Z6 I have some times that problem, but just pulling the focus ring a little bit to closer and AF always immediatly reacquires on the person in front of the lens; not as it should be but it works for me .....
@@mlai2546 I am not the OP however I did notice an improved difference immediately upon updating my firmware. During my initial tests, it was sloppy and I was almost sad to have purchased the Z6. But after the firmware, I can trust the autofocus 85% of the time. Of the times my AF has failed (and fought against my attempts to refocus), it was usually when my subject crossed another object/subject in the foreground, and the camera began focusing on that intercepting object/person.
biggest issue for Nikon is not the Z9, its the lack of a cheaper body with a lot of the important tech (hasnt trickled down yet) If im shooting an R3 for sports, I'll have an R6 for a backup body, or something smaller for family outings, that offers most of the goodies at a far lower price. Want that with a Z9, you're paying for 2 of them and still stuck with the large size.
This will only be a problem for the next year or so and then Nikon will have both the flagship and the smaller bodies and all the lenses that anyone could need - what will be the complaint about Nikon then I wonder???
@@baronsilverton6504 there will always be someone complaining about something, that's the internet. Like I said at this moment in time it is a weakness.
@@blakeparry1983 True that - the internet and the complainers - most of whom do not even use the gear themselves and if they do only casually. Bottom line - there is no longer a better system: not Sony, not Canon and not Nikon - they are all the best at some use cases and the worst at others - but in general they are all pretty good at everything meaning that it is now back to who the best photographers are. I guess this is why some are so upset - they have lost their artificial advantage 😂
I agree SD are easier and cheaper. But they are slow. So I prefer the CF Express even though they're expensive. I don't worry much about the price of CF Express when I have $12,000 worth of camera and lens in my hand. R5 is $3800, Battery grip is $350, Ef to RF adapter with Variable ND is $400, ef 70-200 $2100, RRS L bracket $220. 1tb Angelbird CF express $600, 1tb SD card UHS II 128gb $150 for a total plus tax of $7620 plus tax. The $12,000 is if my 200 F2 is on it. I want the speed of the CF Express. The 120FPS on the Nikon is Jpeg and the hit rate on focus while moving fast isn't very good on the Nikon. I much prefer Raw. Can you work with Jpeg, yes. I never do unless it's travel stuff. I will say, I think the R5 is a better option for most then the R3. I want the extra MP. Heck I want the High MP R5 to be released and the R5 will go to spare and video with a Atomos V+ for most of its life. And I think the z9 is a better camera then the R3. Is it better then a R5? Not for me. I also use the battery grip on the R5. And the EF to RF adapter with a variable ND filter in it. Which is awesome keeping me out of HSS and allowing me full power from my flashes. And no shot limits on Godox anymore if you aren't in HSS. It also fits ALL EF glass. Since it's behind the lens. Makes me NOT want RF glass. I am glad Nikon is back up to speed. The Z9 is an amazing camera. They also just released a firmware update. One thing we should remember. The 1dx lines were for photojournalists. Not portrait photographers or really wedding photographers. The point of it was to get the shot no matter what at olympic events and in war zones. So lower resolution was OK. For portraits and wedding to be able to enlarge you didn't go for a 1dx. Some of these now are changing modes. The Z9 with 45.7mp and the A1 with 50.1mp are both not what a 1dx style camera was about so they've really had to upgrade processing for speed of the camera. That's why the 120fps on the z9 is amazing. You get the shot in a photojournalist style in seconds. If the tracking is working great you point and fire and don't make a spectacle doing it. Less chance to be seen by a enemy as documenting a event they don't want documented. And still can get a 50mp image for portraiture. These cameras really introduce that High MP portrait full frames at the 120mp can be produced because with the processing power they're pushing to run 120fps they can easily slow down and process 5fps for 120mp. Come on Canon and release a monster 5DS R replacement.
i tried then both, both are fantastic cameras. would i love to have 50mp sensor YES! do i need it? no. Was going to buy the z9 but the canon r3 just felt more intuitiv and engaging for me . thats just my preference. The autofocus was great on both but r3 felt a little more reliable and i loved the eye tracking.and i liked the ergonomics better.
@10:08 . Even though the camera bodies have become "an even playing field". If I have to pick one that could be a winner, when you have to factor in others. I might be bias because I use Canon. But I'm picking Canon on this because of the lenses ecosystem. The game changer that Canon have over Sony & Nikon is........ the EF to RF Drop-In Filter Variable ND adapter.. (someone correct me on this) I know Sony have something similar, but you have to put the ND filter directly onto the sensor?? Also, I don't want to be carrying different filters for different lenses if I do need to go ND for my photos. But yeah, someone correct me on this since I don't have much knowledge on the Sony & Nikon Lenses.
Well you cannot say that 120fps @11mb is useless when social media is going to compress a file... Even shooting 30fps in both only is great if you're out in the field and have to get your work uploaded. I think NIKON has done there homework and when you want that great detailed high resolution shoot: TAKE YOUR TIME
One of the features of the Z9 I don’t see discussed too often is the High Efficiency RAW modes that reduce the file size and eliminate the workflow issue. I just got the Z9 for wedding work and NEVER thought I’d shoot 45 MP at events. However, if the IQ is still there and I take no hit to my workflow and storage space by shooting the HE mode, might as well take the resolution. Plus, going into crop mode is a nice feature for reach and still maintaining plenty of resolution. Hope you get one for review soon.
@@DragRacingTV the HE files are just the unbaked files that you work on like RAW files. When you save the files for the clients you save them in jpegs for the clients. Giving HE to clients is like give RAW files to clients, it's very rare that anyone does that.
Dan is definitely one of the more knowledgeable guys on YT with respect to these digital cameras. He's got a couple vids on the R5 video features that are dope. Completely agree with your comment that it's an even playing field now in terms of mirrorless camera tech. You can do your thing with any of these mirrorless cams from various makers now.
There is a few of them out. Manfrotto, Leofoto, to mount a flash on and even a camera on. A lot use them with Gopro's mounted on the outside of cars. With a camera they usually run a triple setup so if one fails the camera doesn't fall. But if you were a building owner/manager and see someone mounting it on the outside of your glass building that you need to clean the sucker mark off of. You might be a lil pissed. LOL
0:44-1:04 That was my problem as well during some wildlife shots. Do you think this could be solved by some firmware updates? This is the only weakness of R3. I was very satisfied the rest of the capabilities. But to be honest, this issue could lead to a missing capture in a wild, thus it would be nice to develope it.
As a Hass 907x user who thought the GFX100 was overcomplicated I am sure I would hate this with all those fiddly buttons and menus - but I still have a sweet spot for Nikon as they gave me my 1st pro camera; the legendary F3 when I used it as a 2nd camera for the RZ 6x7 on fashion shoots - nice to see they are still knocking it out. Are their lenses still built like tanks?
Z9 serious wildlife cam but for the stuff you guys do sure it's all even playing field. R3 is not for me the full frame 24MP can't really crop much don't cut it for wildlife these days maybe a few years back, need the detail but even though I say that it's still good but I'd rather have an R5 than the R3 for Canon. R3 is a great sports cam where rez isn't a big deal. I'm sure this would have been the R1 it's just Canon didn't realize that Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 decided to move a notch up so Canon renamed it to R3. Now frantically trying to come up with the R1.
Not being into video, I really liked that you said 24MP was more than enough for photography. I love the AF of the z9 and the sensor guard so when that trickles down to a $2,500 body, i'm in. May be able to trade my barely used D850 for an even swap.
In 2018 I switched over from my beloved Canon 5Dm4 system to the more lighter and compact Sony A7III. These new cameras are going back to big and heavy. I’m not going back to big and heavy :)
Your last statement is the best in the video. The current cameras are head and shoulders above any time in History. I’m loyal Canon because of the glass. In my opinion they have some classics and the variety is unmatched. Nikon also has good glass.
I feel like a lot of people are trying to scale down on the size and weight, these look enormous, my Canon 5DM4 makes my arms, shoulders and back hurt after a while, this look like they'll cripple you XD
As hobbyist photographer and Nikon user, I really can't justify the cost of any of these flagship camera. So my struggle at this point is Nikon lack of mid range camera (budget friendly) with similar AF as the Canon and Sony mid range cameras. I going to wait a little longer to see if Nikon will introduce a mid range camera with better AF.
So, like you I've been shooting with Sony mostly but also added Canon R5. Never shot Nikon with a DSLR or mirrorless only because once you picked a brand why switch. Had several Nikon film cameras including a F4. Well for reasons I find difficult to explain I decided to pre-order a Z9 and after 4 months one shipped to me. I thought it would be a longer wait since I am not an NPS member. Well I know have a Z9 in my hands and waiting for the lens to show up. I've always shot with a grip and have one on my R5 and A1. I might have considered a R3 but really wanted the higher megapixels and still have an A9 II so I didn't go with an R3. I don't shoot video so I didn't see what the R3 offered over an A9II. So the size doesn't bother me but it is a mountain to climb to understand setting up an Z9 for sure. Will see ofter a month if I keep it or stay with Sony/Canon. On all cameras having a area-swiss plate for tripod mounting screws with the vertical grip for sure. Don't know how they will ever fix that issue. Just have to take it off when doing portrait work.
Guys Nikons new High efficiency ⭐ (star) file format is 40% less file size and is virtually indistinguishable from a lossless file. So the 45mp files are equivalent to roughly 27-30 mp in size. See Matt Granger's video on this ruclips.net/video/rF6vEz7GCYI/видео.html
Great video. Love your conclusion at the end. That's the main reason I got myself on the R3 waiting list: the 28-70/2.0, not so much this camera over the Z9 (or A1, but that's down to ergonomics too).
Sorry guys, I started in the late 1960's/early 1970's and shot sports in a 4X5" Press camera [sheet film]; 5 or 6 shots a minute was pushing it!!! So WHAT do you NEED > 20 frames a second for without sports and Wild life???
@4:52 In regards of the CFexpress Type B & SD card. I'm glad that canon made the call do use both SD card, and CFexpress. When it comes to make whoops makes in the field. I might have a moment where I don't have a CFexpress card because... whoops. And if Canon went both CFexpress cards on the R3, I might of shot myself in the foot for that assignment. I couldn't find any other place locally (within drivable driving distance if it happens) that carries a CFexpress card if I happen to need one in an emergency. So glad that canon made the R3 both CFexpress & SD.
It's true, the biggest difference between these flagship cameras (yes, the R3 is Canon's flagship until the R1 comes out) is personal preference. Well, one other thing that wasn't mentioned: price. There's a $1400 gap between the Z9 and the Alpha 1 with vertical grip, with the R3 in between. That's not nothing, given the very similar functionalities.
i own an a1, i will never buy a grip for it, z9 owners are always stuck carrying their giant porky battery around, it's over 2x heavier than an a1 battery 🤣
Comparison videos of the top level of different systems are a tough sell. The reality is that if you are already invested in a system (Sony, Canon, or Nikon) then none of the others are "better enough" to move you over. If you are not invested in any system currently then all of these top of the line, professional level, cameras are probably overkill and not worth comparing anyways.
Sony crushed it. Weight is the most significant factor when it comes to cameras. RIP DSLR! I thought it strange Manny wouldn't make eye contact with Dan, especially when Dan was asking him a question and looking directly at him.
You mean weight is the most important thing, try to hand hold your sony with bigger lens and you will see. Secondly, as someone who has been into computers for like 30 years. The worst enemy for any electronic chip is heat. That is why you have all type of coolers, there is a whole industry on cooling chips. So by any means, I prefer a bigger camera that never overheats, rather than smaller one that overheats or even just heat up to the touch. With mirror less now where the image sensor is nearly always on, I think prolong heat will degrade image and processing sensor in time.
@@danielvilliers612 camera overheating is not totally dependent on body size, the a1 for instance has a carbon heat sink mounted to the back of the sensor, it's a far better-engineered camera than both the z9 and the r3... waste heat is generated by inefficient chips, that are manufactured with trace widths that are too wide, sony is the world #1 sensor producer, that's why the a1 has the best watt-hour battery life.
@@DragRacingTV LOL, hey the internet is full of people having overheating and people even saying its too hot to HOOOLLLD. Great tech, much better than competion that has zzero overheating until now. Do you know what law of physics are, who are you to know what Tech Nikon is using for passive cooling??? They might be using the same, but one law of physics is that larger surface area, makes it much easier to transfer or dissipate heat.
You said it best, Nikon shooters don’t have options and are forced to get Z9 to get the latest focus system. Once a Z8 comes out with same tech, there will be a lot of used Z9’s. With Canon, you have R6, R5, and R3. I also seen that Nikon has moved over 20k Z9’s. Good for them. Finally some R&D money. 👍
Nikon produced this great camera albeit its huge or heavy…the problem is it’s not for most people and that price range and it’s not available anyways for purchase…it does nothing to alleviate Nikons current economic issues…the tech needs to filter down into other models and be actually available for purchase…until then Nikon users are once more left waiting 😯
Nikon Z9 is targeted for Nikon professional users. You have to think of Z9 as a Sony A1 and Sony FX6 all in one package for half the price. Or Canon R5 + Canon R5C in one package. Note that R5C has a fan so its not usable in outdoor environment when you have dusts. Z9 to me is a bargain at $5.5k.
@@mlai2546 Z9 will be my first flagship camera. Getting the Z9 is worth it, it's like getting D6, D850 in one and you get a free cinema camera. Also the file size won't be an issue even at 46MP due to the new High Efficiency RAW that Nikon came up with.
no, it's nowhere near being an even playing field... the a1 is a far more well-rounded camera, with the best af and the best lens selection by far, and canon will arguably be ahead with event video shooting when they port eye control af over to video... nikon has too many limitations, for instance it's covering up the worst battery life with a battery that is over 2x the weight of the a1 battery... nikon is still technologically still well behind the sony/canon curve.
@@DragRacingTV How many different shift lenses are available for a Sony? How many native? Sony is definitely not the leader in lens options. Canon and Nikon have a ton more options. For what this and all top line cameras have always been designed for. The z9 actually beats everybody just with that 120fps. The top line has always been for photojournalists. Getting the shot no matter what. In the 120fps mode you just aim and fire and stop. You'll get a shot to upload to a news agency. Even if half miss focus you have 120 frames to chose from. Canon and Sony can't do that at all. And that is a big loss for them both. But I'm sure you'll see it in the next round and for Canon on the R1. Also the z9 is built like a tank which to a photojournalist is very important. Have you ever seen the lenses and cameras of the old newpaper guys? They were beat to hell. But still got the shot. The A1 is solid but nothing compared to the z9. The R3 is not the R1 so I really don't expect that kind of durability from it.
@@mverick160 tilt/shift lenses are manual, so all dslr lenses including f-mount work on e-mount, and there are over 200 full frame e-mount lenses available for the a1... 120fps is worthless to 99.9% of shooters, nobody is going to sort thru tens of thousands of photos in the field in order to upload it immediately, your post is nonsense... the z9 is a giant porky pig of a camera that can't be made smaller.
@@DragRacingTV Military will without question go through the pictures in the field to see what to upload. And they don't shoot tens of thousands. They fire it for 1 sec. That's the awesome thing. That's all they have to fire it for now. Paparazzi would love it. Many pro journalist shooters would love it. You didn't answer the question. How many Tilt/shift lenses has Sony made? I'll answer for you. Zero. In fact their's only 1 E mount. And it's crappy. If we're going on what can be adapted to mount. Well gee. Theirs an adapter to fit my Bronica GS lenses on my Canon too. So I guess "Adapted" they all have a ton. But they sure don't have any that are native mount or Sony made. So you'll have something that's rigged up. No thanks. Your post is a simple bash with nothing of knowledge of pro cameras. Nice try, maybe if you'd actually used any of these for the last 40 years you'd understand more about what the z9 was designed for. This seems to be the problem. Everyone thinks the new camera released should be EVERYTHING. Yea, it don't work that way. They have a line with different models for different photographers. Read that again and do some research on that. Maybe you'll understand. Drop your A1 on the ground from 5 feet and drop a Z9. The A1 will be in pieces. The Z9 is a pro workhorse. Sony hasn't figured that out yet and that's why the A1 is small and made of mostly plastic. Theirs a reason the Z9 is a porky pig. It's made out of Magnesium. The A1 is built of mostly plastic. You can bet the R1 will be built of a metal also. Because when you have to have a camera that works in any environment under extreme situations. You don't build it out of plastic. And the weather sealing has to be great. Which I'm sure the Z9 is. The A1 with it being mostly plastic I wouldn't bet on. The reason I know the R3 wasn't the R1 and Canon changed the name to the R3 when they saw the R1 is it isn't made of Metal for more durability. Pretty simple. For me, I don't want a Z9, R1, A1 or R3. My useage is of the 5DS R range. I have a R5 and it's awesome but when they come out with a High MP I'll be buying it and the R5 will be a backup and used for video with an Atomos V+. Because those 2 fit the lineup I'm in.
I STILL don't get why all of the sudden auto area af has become so important in a 2k+ body (or 6k in this case). Other than that, great video (so far).
hi Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Watson lol, My first DSLR was a Nikon D80, so I am happy that Nikon has finally gotten close the Sony and Canon with there focusing, but I will never buy a dual grip camera. and I am totally comfortable doing portraits with a single grip, but I might consider a Nikon again when they come out with all this new tec in a small camera like a Z8, but I am still unhappy with how big and heavy the new Nikon glass is, as of now I still am using the A7r lll. and I have no need to upgrade for what I use it for. but if I was to upgrade I would want an A1, but I am hoping that Sony comes out with the moving the focus point with the eye feature that the canon R3 has. thats a cool feature, but personally I think the R3's 20mp is not enough for a camera in 2022. but the Canon R5 is a nice camera, but there 50 and 85 L is also to big and heavy, Sony seems to get that size matters, and have been keeping there lenses smaller than Nikon and Canon. I think the bigger lens mounts of the Nikon and Canon go against them when trying to design smaller glass. the back of the lens that connects to the mount has to be bigger around then a Sony lens. but I still think Nikon and Canon could make smaller glass if they set out to do it. but for some reason they are in a different mind set. and that would be ok if there glass was better then Sony's, but with all there talk about there bigger lens mounts there glass is not better then Sony's. and Sigma got this when they redesigned the Sigma 85 art, and made it half the size and weight of the original. and the fact that Nikon and Canon don't make it easy for 3rd part glass makers to make lenses for there cameras, is a big advantage for Sony, I think the Sony A74 33mp is a great sweet spot. but I am used to 42mp now. but with that said I was content with 12mp not to many years ago.
I started on Nikon. Sold it all for Sony. I'm happy. Not switching unless/until Sony stops making cameras basically. That said, it's great to see Nikon finally up their game with the Z9. I know a LOT of Nikon shooters who were starting to believe they were going to be left behind. A solid Nikon offering will only help but push Sony and Canon to be even better.
I shoot weddings with an A9MK1 and unless a camera comes out with better low light performance I will stick with it. This is a good thing, cameras are now so good the need to change with every new body is no longer there. It was the same when I had a Canon 1DX, I ignored both the mKII and MKIII because the MKI did everything I needed. I have never shot Nikon but it's great to see them catch up with mirrorless.
You have Facebook groups, where you can find at least Nikon people who switched to Sony and then came back when nikon went mirror less. There are quite a few.
Great review, both cameras z9 and Canon r3 are the new paradigm. I believe in almost everything you said. However, I do disagree that once users get z9 they will eventually sell them. Because at that price point, if people can't afford it, they won't get it. And if they do get it, they will find little reason to give it up and sell it to buy another Nikon (maybe the z8 when it comes out)?? with less functionality and maybe only $1000 or 1500 or so less. Point is Nikon is here to stay, and ignore the trolls and lies who think Nikon will go the route of Olympus. The reasons they are doing quite well financially (32.1 billions yens of operating profits for the latest 6 months available, with image products of 12.5 billions yens of profits) is partly because of combined the z6II and z7II plus D850 sales and anyone who troll and disagree with these comments is a first-class imbecile/nitwit. Then one haughty jackass even tried to tell me I don't have a z9 and yet he doesn't even has a z9 in his hands, talk about throwing stone when you live in glass houses. This same nincompoop then accused me of dishonor, yet he is so gutless/spineless, lacking even testosterone as a real man to even give out his last name, just a troll that goes by Michael S. Wow how brave! Bottom line, the Z9 has shut the mouths of many Nikon naysayers. And it's video capability is a clear sign to Sony a1 that it has a lot of catching up to do in that department.
Brain freeze or what? If you don't want 45mp shots then shoot the Z9 in crop mode. When you need or want 45mp shots then you have it. Sure beats using Gigapixel.
The only thing that Z9 sold to people is internal prores 10 bit 422 and capability to external 12 bit raw. It is absolutely make Nikon jump from bottom photo camera to second line movie making camera after Arri and Sony Venice. The long-been-proved color science and battery management just make Z9 a resilient camera to be tested in the market. Red cameras overheating, Sony camera’s user unfriendly, is not comparable to this low heat quiet photo camera.
If you want to look at cost, you can buy a Z9 with a 50mm 1.2 for the same price as an A1 with a battery grip. It's like a buy one get one free.
But...you don't get an A1 then.

Have you noticed any difference in dynamic range of the z9 as compared to the Z7 II?
is there any difference in the image quality bw z6ii and z9
Sometimes I wish people will not just judge how good a camera is by only how fast and accurate the eye focus is. Yes, it's important but there's a lot more to a great camera than just nailing the eye. I remember shooting with film cameras and manual lenses. I learnt a lot more about how to shoot back then. A camera is way more than auto-focus.
I’m shooting a z6ii and totally waiting for the tech to trickle down to a camera that is about the size of z6 or z7. Even if it has a few less features than the z9. Better autofocus, longer video record times and an updated sensor is all I would need.
Me too Z6II. We need10 bit internal with 4K 120 fps
@@rubendarilov that too!
Yes. Agree. Z6 iii.

Nikon z9 blows out the competition and at its price is a no brainer

Dont think so, A1 is still the king, a year later which is pathetic if u ask me. Selling all my Nikon crap, over it.
@@parks71a king on what? that is just a blanket statement without giving any details
@@mikeyraysivak4607 king of shooting speed, AF accuracy, variable shutter, dynamic range, lenses availability and selection, light weight, EVF, and has a shutter when absolutely need like with certain flash situations and banding situations in with Z9 has no solution for at this time. @@creamynessification It's up!
Can’t wait to see what you create when the 8k60 update drops.
Dan see my comment on Nikon file size - you guys missed something in the conversation.
Nikon put some really good heat sinks in the camera. Remains to be seen how camera will respond to 8K 60 workloads.
No, Roddy. You're just weak. The Z9 is slightly heavier than my D850.
@@castieldiallo2945 nope. Not weak. Been gripped cameras for a while.
@@rodneyturnerphoto if you say so.
Manny leave Irene Alone 🤣😂great video as usual!❤️❤️
The Z9 is a better camera than the R3 period. Those who say otherwise are fanboys.
I don't know... that eye auto focus thing sounded pretty epic. I've never even heard that before.
My reply to this comment is at the 9:55 mark
R3 af is better
@wangpie92 what I'm saying lol, buying new camera is not about af these days, pick a camera and go for it
That last sentence can be weighed in Gold!
“I hope your pillow is warm on both sides tonight!” 🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely rolling
Manny you should review the Z6 with the new fw update, different camera regarding the AF…
Does that problem still exists after upgrading to latest firmwares?
@@mlai2546 I am not the OP however I did notice an improved difference immediately upon updating my firmware. During my initial tests, it was sloppy and I was almost sad to have purchased the Z6. But after the firmware, I can trust the autofocus 85% of the time. Of the times my AF has failed (and fought against my attempts to refocus), it was usually when my subject crossed another object/subject in the foreground, and the camera began focusing on that intercepting object/person.
biggest issue for Nikon is not the Z9, its the lack of a cheaper body with a lot of the important tech (hasnt trickled down yet)
If im shooting an R3 for sports, I'll have an R6 for a backup body, or something smaller for family outings, that offers most of the goodies at a far lower price.
I wouldn't want to touch SD on these new bodies. I had to switch to XQD with the Z6 but it's been fine.
Damn…. Dan’s beard is on point!! Let the battle of the beards BEGIN!!!
Great Video Guys! Cant Wait To See The Z9 In Person! :)
Still waiting for the Z8 before I trade my gear and upgrade. My D850 is still killing it and I have no problems waiting
i tried then both, both are fantastic cameras. would i love to have 50mp sensor YES! do i need it? no. Was going to buy the z9 but the canon r3 just felt more intuitiv and engaging for me . thats just my preference. The autofocus was great on both but r3 felt a little more reliable and i loved the eye tracking.and i liked the ergonomics better.
What’s the name of the tripod that sticked to the wall towards the end of the video?
Great comparison! What is that suction mount you were using for the flash?
But yeah, someone correct me on this since I don't have much knowledge on the Sony & Nikon Lenses.
did u update the firm ear for the camera ad the lenses i got mine 2 days a god and it works great no issues
Well you cannot say that 120fps @11mb is useless when social media is going to compress a file...
Even shooting 30fps in both only is great if you're out in the field and have to get your work uploaded.
I think NIKON has done there homework and when you want that great detailed high resolution shoot: TAKE YOUR TIME
For Photojournalist work the 120fps is absolutely awesome. It never was about quality, just getting the shot.
Perfect, succinct comparison. And you're right, it's all a much more even playing field now
I am shooting the X1D II 50C and I plan to add the Z9 to my commercial fleet.
Nikon is now the top dog!
Hope you get one for review soon.
i'm sure you realize that you can't deliver in heif format, no client wants it.
Question, @ 2:51 you had your flash suction cupped to the glass, what is that???
There is a few of them out. Manfrotto, Leofoto, to mount a flash on and even a camera on. A lot use them with Gopro's mounted on the outside of cars. With a camera they usually run a triple setup so if one fails the camera doesn't fall. But if you were a building owner/manager and see someone mounting it on the outside of your glass building that you need to clean the sucker mark off of. You might be a lil pissed. LOL
@@mverick160 lol thanks for the info
0:44-1:04 That was my problem as well during some wildlife shots. Do you think this could be solved by some firmware updates? This is the only weakness of R3. I was very satisfied the rest of the capabilities. But to be honest, this issue could lead to a missing capture in a wild, thus it would be nice to develope it.
Great, informative video, thanks!
Was the footage from 10:03 shot on the Canon or Nikon by the way?
As a Hass 907x user who thought the GFX100 was overcomplicated I am sure I would hate this with all those fiddly buttons and menus - but I still have a sweet spot for Nikon as they gave me my 1st pro camera; the legendary F3 when I used it as a 2nd camera for the RZ 6x7 on fashion shoots - nice to see they are still knocking it out. Are their lenses still built like tanks?
I was always happy with my Z6ii and still I'm.
I think the stutter you mention on the Z9 is from ibis activating
At 2:50 what's the light setup, specifically the mount?
I'm subbed to both of you great photographers. Would love to try out the R3 though
It will surely happen in 2022, they need to update their lineup
Last time we saw you, Diana, Dan and Sally were together was at Q’s coffee photo walk in FL.
Que marca de rines son los rojos y donde estan huvicados
Guys Nikons new High efficiency ⭐ (star) file format is 40% less file size and is virtually indistinguishable from a lossless file. So the 45mp files are equivalent to roughly 27-30 mp in size.

Great video. Love your conclusion at the end. That's the main reason I got myself on the R3 waiting list: the 28-70/2.0, not so much this camera over the Z9 (or A1, but that's down to ergonomics too).

How is the autofocus compared to the R5?

@@monykhiev7347 I know the proce and it's one of the biggest factors
Price is no factor when u get to this price range. Unless u want to consider prices of lenses which the Sony wins easy.
I have to quote Oscar Wilde here: "cynic" -- someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.
O Manny that first second of intro.... c'mon now. Hugging my Z6ii in my arms as I watch this video.
Also the nikon does well when a model is standing still but moving subject it has a hard time
Sony crushed it. Weight is the most significant factor when it comes to cameras. RIP DSLR! I thought it strange Manny wouldn't make eye contact with Dan, especially when Dan was asking him a question and looking directly at him.
Manny has said in previous videos he is a huge introvert.
Bruuuh I hope your pillow is warm on both sides tonight 😂😂😂😂 ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️
You said it best, Nikon shooters don’t have options and are forced to get Z9 to get the latest focus system. Once a Z8 comes out with same tech, there will be a lot of used Z9’s.
With Canon, you have R6, R5, and R3.
I also seen that Nikon has moved over 20k Z9’s. Good for them. Finally some R&D money. 👍
GREAT Balanced Video from guys who know Photography and dont fuss about Sales Nos ettc etc

Enjoy your cameras. It is all for fun. Focus on what your camera CAN do, not on what it can't. Skill and gear always beat gear only.
What you said at the end Manny is DAMN true. It's an even playing field now essentially.
If you want to video, no. If you watch Dan Watson video, the z9 is well above and will receive a firmware for 8k 60fps raw soon.
no, it's nowhere near being an even playing field... the a1 is a far more well-rounded camera, with the best af and the best lens selection by far, and canon will arguably be ahead with event video shooting when they port eye control af over to video... nikon has too many limitations, for instance it's covering up the worst battery life with a battery that is over 2x the weight of the a1 battery... nikon is still technologically still well behind the sony/canon curve.

How many different shift lenses are available for a Sony?

I STILL don’t understand how you STILL don’t understand
@@mavfan1 I STILL don't understand how you STILL don't understand what I STILL don't understand

@@sloppy-1-1 I still don't understand why you two are wankers.
Nice final comments Manny.
Hi Manny you sent a message to contact you by what's app, have been trying but I'm in the U.K difficult to get the times right.
R5/6 are winners for me. Best bangs for the bucks.
Great video Manny. Some of the audio wasnt in sync but minor. Amazing video as always. Canon is always the best though
Can you do a deeper review, this was very brief
But FPS at the same resolution?
I really enjoyed your content such a inspiration
If you guys shoot tethered, as we do for 99% of our commercial photography jobs, the flip out screen of the canon drives us nuts and hits the cables.
One question. Has anybody ever switched to Nikon from Canon or Sony?
You have Facebook groups, where you can find at least Nikon people who switched to Sony and then came back when nikon went mirror less. There are quite a few.
I did in 2010, but just switched to sony. Wish Nikon well.
That backpack fire tho.
I was about to ask link for this bag, it looks great..
Brain freeze or what? If you don't want 45mp shots then shoot the Z9 in crop mode. When you need or want 45mp shots then you have it. Sure beats using Gigapixel.
But sees a major dif between 30 fps and 20 fps. Also nikon does 120 fps, at 11 mpx, you know...for instagram.
love this unbiased review. Toney & Tselsea said the AF is better on the z9 lol
They say that here too
Af is better and more sticky on R3 ,
The only thing that Z9 sold to people is internal prores 10 bit 422 and capability to external 12 bit raw.
My pillow is warm on both sides tonight.
If eye autofocus were to trickle down to the lower end models I may switch back to Canon.
