Not sure if you knew this based on how you worded it in your video, but there is a physical off switch for vertical shutter & vertical controls. I mostly shoot stills but run into the same problem of accidentally pressing vertical shutter & dials, especially when cradling the camera to shoot low angles (I'm a longtime Nikon shooter, lucky to have had the Z9 since first batch delivery). The SWITCH around the vertical shutter button (same as the on/off/light switch around horizontal/normal shutter button) is a locking switch that deactivates all the vertical controls including the shutter button. When on the "L" function, it's in lock mode. This should solve those ergonomics. As for the focus modes button (left hand side), I think Nikon is fighting hard to have an always available focus mode button as they did on their pro DSLR bodies as a fail safe. Unsure if they'll budge on that over time. Cheers! Thanks for the great reviews.

    • @patricksmith2553
      @patricksmith2553 2 года назад +8

Agree! All professional video camera's are heavy and I don't see weight as being a factor, like he said, it helps stabilize the camera. I don't think it's fair to knock the Z9 for being heavy or heavier than other camera's. The RED 8K is heavy, the Canon C500 Mark II is heavy, etc., etc. I live in Los Angeles and I see movies and commercials being shot here all of the time. Arri's Alexa LF is often the camera of choice here for those purposes and the setups being used, in the streets (not in studio) are huge! I can't imagine what they weigh, it must be 15-20lbs easily. People literally add rails, monitors or even multiple monitors and you name it, to make their camera's heavier, lol. So saying the 3lb Nikon Z9 is heavy, really does not sit right with me. It's designed first and foremost to replace the Nikon D6 or flagship camera's and most of the users who the Z9 is targeted at, are used to and even prefer a heavy, well built camera with integrated vertical grip. Plus if you're an adult, especially an adult male, you should be able to easily carry 6lbs all day, without whining about it. The Nikon does not overheat and it shoots for hours and hours, plus it has a huge long lasting battery, which you wouldn't get with a smaller, lighter camera!

Ha, Z9 wins in the video category vs a1. As to 8k, Sony can only guarantee 30 minutes of recording but apparently some can shoot even longer according to what I read on interenet. So Nikon's more than 2 hours of recording (without) overheating is a major plus when stacking up against competitions. I think Z9 also wins in the still photos department. Z9 is going to be a great hit - the only thing stopping it now is the supply side issue - that should eventually get solved soon.

Thanks for the review. ProRes Raw internal coming this year. So, as you pointed out, and I have also, the only reason, unless you must go beyond 2hrs 10min, to record externally would be to save on media costs (those big, fast CFExpress are expensive!) ... and have access to exposure tools currently lacking in the Z9. However, I've requested those and Nikon indicates we can expect improvements in that area. I hope so.
I thought the rattling strap rings was a bit of a stretch among more legitimate minor complaints. If a cage is installed, those go. The menus are personal. As a long-term Nikon user, they're familiar to me and the least labyrinthian among brands, in my opinion.
Now if my early order would just arrive at my retailer!

I almost pulled the trigger on the Z6 but the lack of second slot held me back, now I want the Z9 and is either out of stock or the scalpers at eBay wanting 10k for it. I guess it'll be best for us now that there's more options so brands don't get too comfy.

I had been waffling on a new Nikon for years. this video for someone like me who wants a great still and good raw video camera, gave me pause.. I ended up upgrading to a great condition Nikon D700 for stills for another year. (wanted full frame to work with vintage lenses for some projects) and the huge improvements to video with Z9..gives me hope Z8, Z6III will have some internal raw video recording options. Until I switch things up,I'm shooting BMPCC4K in BRAW with satisfactory results for my projects... looking forward to a modern Nikon at some point however.

Inconsistency in lens performance seems to be a factor with many new cameras. As bodies get smarter they outrun the focus capabilities of older glass, meaning only the latest lenses match optimal specs. So everyone has to buy again, to get the performance they originally bought the camera for.

i guess the recording limit is most likely for customs duty. For example in Germany you´d have to pay a higher customs duty for a "video camera" without a record limit than for a photo camera with a record limit

It’s great to see Nikon getting some love although Gerald didn’t have the same enthusiasm reviewing this as with his Sony cams and I think this is probably generally true across the film community. Nikon has a lot of work to do if it wants to win the community over in order to increase market share and survive. I say this as a long time Nikon d800 user looking to get into mirrorless video.

I always enjoy listening to your videos, but I have to ask a silly question because video (Nikon shooter) is new to me. I appreciate the content you pack into each video and I know why you move through the review as quickly as you do. That said, do you have a "Video basics" discussion where you slowly break down the terms you're using and the relevance of why things like this are important? Experience videographers will follow your review details easily, but for us novice folks it's a bit overwhelming (but still love hearing about it). If you know of a good place to start (other than getting the camera in hand and messing with it) I'd love a link. I would make UNDOING your details all the more worth while. Have a great New Year.

Great video! This flagship of a camera needs to record video to both cards! Such a shame it doesn't.

  • @brucesummers7448

Autofocus performance will always be degraded when using a shorter than normal focal length lens. Much as one knows that a 200mm will magnify the image, a 35mm lens will in turn demagnify objects in a scene. It turns background mountains into mole hills. The autofocus system works by detecting areas of contrast and a wide angle lenses reduces the area and hampers AF performance. Try using a 24mm f/1.4 and getting sharp focused images, especially when shooting in low light, with any camera's autofocus system.
The video file limitation when recording is not an issue with the use of an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja that was mentioned in the video. Recording time limitations in the camera is only a concern if doing time lapse recording.

  • @cinematools

The problem with the LUT that Nikon provides is that it makes the image very saturated and adds a lot of contrast that it ruins the point of shooting LOG in the first place. I'm yet to test it with Z9 but it was the case with Z6 and Z6II.

Normal people : How about cut off the 8k part, cut off the 60 fps video for 1000 usd, cut off the little bit of ISO/dynamic rang handling for 500 usd. Remove grip, we can buy battery later, that part 500 usd. That mean it same price of z7ii and you can call it z8. It for people want better IQ/AF from z7ii and not interesting with video. And u can make another vesion with give us back 60 fps video, some one will happy pay about 3500 usd for that and u can call it z8 ii

    • @JesseStarrPhoto

There are trade offs to doing a flip out screen. For still shooters, it is a slower, multi step process to use the screen when it is the Canon r5 style screen compared to what the z9 has
