- In October of 2002, Gwen Araujo, a transgender teen in California's east bay was killed at a party by several of her friends who were unaware she was born male after these friends had sexual relations with her. Andrew talks about the case, Gwen's life, the trial of the perpetrators ( who have since been convicted of her murder ), and issues facing transgender teens today.

I have great compassion for this mother! I have 3 grown children, none of which are transgender, or homosexual, however, I am still able to empathize, and feel her pain. It's hard enough to raise children without having to deal with a child who believes they are one gender, but their body says something else. Sylvia, if you happen to read this, please know that, Gwen really did touch the hearts of many. I don't feel sorry for you, I feel sorry for what happened to Gwen... RIP Gwen Eddie Araujo!

I have a problem with the 4 people who were charged with Gwen's death. The girl she had the argument with i think her name is Nicole. This Nicole IS guilty also of Gwen's death. I don't respect lying rapists regardless of orientation. Araujo in no way deserved to be killed, just to face the same consequences other rapists face through the legal system.

I do not think it was wrong that she did not tell the truth. Not really. Because in such a hypocratic society we live in it is very hard to be completely honest. Look around the world, anything different from what is generally considered to be "normal" is taken as something dangerous, strange, unnatural etc. I think being transgender is a very difficult thing even in the 21st century. She could have been honest if people were more open and tolerant.
I do not care whether the person is black, white, yellow, gay, transgender, fat, thin or dissabled, even not very clever, as long as it is a good person with a good heart. But my attitude is not a general attitude, there are so many hateful people in this world, even in your surroundings.
If all people were wise, she should have lived a happy life as a woman.
But so many people are far from wise. They are blind and stupid, materialistic, egoistic, full of hatred and prejudices.

Jana, I can understand your point but too many people biological sex wins out. Many straight people don't like being "fooled" but not all of us go to the extreme these men did and straight up murder someone for being transgender. Sex is an intimate part of a relationship.
This reminds me of the Brandon Teena story. Brandon was a trans man he dated girls throughout the early 90s. He grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska where people weren’t keen of trans people. His girlfriends later found out he was born female at birth. He later moved to Humboldt, Nebraska where it was even worse. He used to visit a town called Falls City, he made friends with ex convicts called John Lotter and Tom Nissen. He met a beautiful strawberry blonde haired girl called Lana Tisdel, they both started dating in early December 1993. Before Brandon moved to Humboldt he was commonly known to forge checks to get gifts for his girlfriends. So he missed his court date and so his birth name was put in the local newspaper and John and Tom saw and got suspicious about it. Brandon handed himself in on 15th December 1993 because he felt guilty. Lana found out ask her dad for money so she “could get a perm” but she needed the money so she could bail Brandon out. So she got the check off her dad and wrote out $250 and got Tom to bail Brandon out because she was 18 and Tom was 21. After he was bailed out he went to a house Christmas Eve party at Tom’s house with Lana. Tom and John grabbed Brandon took him to the bathroom punched him and kicked him a few times and stripped him to reveal his genitals and forced Lana to look. Later they took Brandon after when Lana’s mother need Lana to go home for something and John and Tom beat Brandon up and raped him in a remote location. Then went to back to Toms and they both forced Brandon to get a shower to get rid of evidence. Brandon jumped out of the window and ran to Lana’s house. He had a raped kit done but was later “lost” by authorities. He reported the rape but the sheriff was getting off on it throughout the rape interview. John and Tom found out that Brandon went to the police and ended up murdering Brandon, Lisa Lambert and Philip Devine and spared Lisa’s toddler son. The homicide happened on New Year’s Eve.

This interviewer was so inconsiderate of Ms. Guerrero’s feelings & answers to his questions. I feel he just wanted all of HIS questions answered, kept interrupting, responded with “uh huh” “mmmhm” & “yea”. Not to mention it looks like he hit the pipe a few times before this time interview.
I watched the movie too but that was just a actor playing her.. I think from the pics I saw she was prettier then the actor & looked more girly.

I just saw the movie and was so incredibly touched by this story. My heart is breaking into a million pieces. I will forever have Sylvia and Gwen in my prayers. What they both went and go through is unimaginable. Sylvia I know you did the best you could for Gwen, you are a loving mother. It's so unfortunate that it had to end this way.

Gwen was a beautiful, young, and brave transgendered woman, who by all that is good should be here with us today!! Living her best life !! That didn't happen , because these cruel, ignorant, hate filled , young guys that knew exactly what was up, took advantage of her, raped her, then savagely killed her!!! They took Her breathing, beautiful body away from people that loved her so very much, but they did not take Her spirit from us !! It is something we like to believe it is biologically fixed like the eye colour or height. It is very threatening to think that might be in question. You don't have the right to know anyone's medical condition unless it is a danger to your own health" So no! people can demand nothing, it does not work like that. I don't see people asking around medical history before making friends or interacting socially, etc. Why is it okay for someone to ask if they are transgender or not? BTW, nothing justifies murder! Wrong! Before having any kind of sex with the person, Gwen should have been honest about being transsexual. This is the difference. I agree you don’t have to disclose it in general but when it comes to dating and sex, honesty is important. Gwen deceived these man!!
I wish that I could have the opportunity to meet this amazing mother. I am also transgender and I was assaulted recently. I was living in a motel in the night shift employee tried to burn me up in the room poor gasoline on my door it was a big mess the police would not do anything they did not even arrest him now he has five counts of hate crimes but that was only because an attorney friend of mine called the DA in the city where I'm at. I'm still struggling trying to find an attorney no one will help me. I would like to just tell her thank you for being an advocate and being supportive

Actually I'm pretty sure Sylvia did tell her that. I saw an episode of a show about Gwen's story and they interviewed Sylvia & Gwen's best friend who both mentioned that the night Gwen got killed, they had suggested to her before going out to change her outfit because she was wearing a skirt and a small top. They were worried for her because usually she wore jeans, shirts that covered her more manly shoulders, scarfs or choker necklaces, etc. Obviously they told her this because they knew it could be a risk of her being harrassed, or worse, on the basis of her being trans. Her mom had seen her hurt before (bullied at school, ppl on street, etc) and hated her child having to go through that so she tried to protect her, and educate her on what could happen. They knew as a 17yr old pre op transgender that if she wore a skirt & tank top she would be much more recognizable as not a biological female. She cared, she tried telling Gwen. Not all 17 year old listen to their parents, especially when they're going thru a major coming of age time. Add to that the confusion she was going thru then top it off with her wanting to validate her gender identity and explore her sexuality. It can be a deadly combo, unfortunately. However we can't just accept or excuse these guys by saying ' I see how they'd freak the fuck out finding out she was trans' or somehow saying that because she lied to them, and technically committed rape according to some laws, there's no wiggle room to really blame her. There's been plenty of men that have been tricked and they don't commit murder. Especially premeditated murder, as a group. That is so much brutality, so no I'm sorry, in these cases the punishment doesn't fit the crime. And I do not understand it. I used to think that since she tricked them she was putting herself at such risk, although I didn't think she deserved to die. But I've re-evaluated my stance on that because it's similar to saying if a women is walking home alone at night she's putting herself at risk to be raped. No, I'm sorry, it falls on the person committing the violent act. Not the victim at fault for being in a vulnerable or at risk situation that may have contributed to providing easier access for someone to assault them.
Jo Molly I don't think the comparison with someone who gets raped or robbed while minding their own business in a risky situation is a good one. There's often a risk if you deceive or cheat someone that they'll take the situation into their own hands. Street justice is harsh. You can get killed over a a thousand bucks or less if you're tangled up with the wrong people. Another way to look at it is what used to happen when a woman with male relatives to defend her honor would get raped. The rapist could be beaten, driven out of town, or even killed. It was not an uncommon type of response. Today of course that sort of revenge is a crime, but it was still a situation that a rapist could bring upon himself. A severe response to someone deceiving or cheating you out of your honor, particularly in the heat of the moment, is instinctive. When trans men play with that fire they sometimes pay with their lives. I'm not saying that's right. I'm saying it's understandable in the same way as some women who want to kill their rapists.
According to the movie and the mom's interview that is totally different how she accepted her son / daughter and by her recapping how she was really beating her face had to be reconstructed nobody move me change no tear she's just cold I really can't understand her interview
I feel bad for Gwen. Just because she was transgender doesn't mean she should of died. Transgender people have rights just like everyone else and should be treated with respect and not be discriminated for who they are. I have friends who are transgender and I treat them like family.

The whole murder was a set up because dude felt some type of way of gwen being a guy when in reality he knew he had a girlfriend cheated on her in front of her with gwen. The murderers got caught and the people who set it up need to do time too Instead of just live life normally and gwen didnt get the right to live.

Gwen was playing with fire by kissing straight males without telling them but if the movie was close to what she was like THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THEY COULD NOT TELL SHE WAS A HE.
