I've had both and prefer the 14" for its superior portability. Better in tight spaces like air travel or the 4 wheel office and for just packing around. At home I use a couple external monitors and use it in clam shell. If you have an iPad with usb-c you can tether the 2 and the iPad can be a second monitor. I've done that out of my home office with an 11" iPad Pro and it's a very nice solution vs the larger screen on the 16. Great comparison video.

I have the 16" M2 Pro and I constantly find myself looking at 14" Pros. the screen real estate is nice on the 16", but it is so cumbersome and it really isn't a LAPtop because it is too big and heavy on the lap. On the plus side: the cooling is better when I am running a lot of code, Lightroom, the odd bit of gaming... so the performance is quite a bit better if you need to push it. If it wasn't for the performance requirements I have, I would go for the 14" everyday.

Ever since I bought my very first laptop, a 17 inch Dell desktop replacement, I've never bought any laptop over 14 inches. Laptops are meant to be lightweight, comfortable to use, and portable. Unless of course, you need a machine that is both a laptop and desktop all-in-one. But I promise you'll regret it once it leaves your desk.
I think this video showed me that the 14 is the way to go. For a $100 less than a 16inch with nearly identical specs, I can get 1TB of space where I’d need to give an additional $200 for that TB on a 16 inch. I usually use an external monitor for my art already, so a 14 should be fine. Thank you!!!
For me, the 14" is really the sweet spot because most of my work is always done on my monitor with the laptop docked. But, if I ever need to do something on the laptop screen, I'll always use 1 window maximum. The 16" just adds extra heft and cost to something you probably also need to use docked with a monitor to get the full benefit from the more powerful CPU. Just my take.
1) I have been taking the commuter rail to my office. I tried using both a 15 inch 2018 MB Pro and a 13 inch HP Elitebook while riding on the train. It is necessary for both notebooks to be angled downward on my lap such that the edge of the top of the screen just rests on the back of the seat in front of me. This allows for the screen to be perpendicular to my line of sight. The seat in front of me angles towards me. In these scenarios, neither notebook is comfortable to use. 2) The distance from the front edge of the notebook to the keyboard is a definite ergonomic issue when the notebook is used on a desk. However, angling the notebook by about 10 degrees or so helps dramatically in this regard.
I had a 16" and went to 14" because of portability. I rarely, and I mean RARELY took it out of the house, it was too hard to move, tougher to one hand, awkward on the couch or in tight spaces. So I went with an iMac as a home computer and a 14". Go 14" and studio display or an iMac.
My point is that it depends on how frequently you carry a laptop. If you carry it every day or a couple of times per two to three days, then buy a 14-inch. If it stays in one place, then go for a 16-inch
Wow, such a thorough review with attention to the features that really matter to people. Love the weighing of pros and cons and the really good look we get at these two laptops. I just want to be as productive while traveling as I am at my desk at work. This has helped me in a big way toward making a good choice. Also, video very well done and my mind never wandered. Time well spent. Thank you, Tech Guy!
Hi Tech Guy Beau, thanks for such a practical video on suitable size of MBP. I have gone through tones of video on this topic but I was never sure what they wanted to say finally. The ergonomics associated with keyboard and the situation where we find ourselves using a laptop is very well demonstrated here. It helped me finalise the size for my new MBP. Thanks bro.😊
14” had a lot of appeal. Because I’m video editing I prefer larger from a pure work standpoint, but I feel like many people don’t do video editing, so the typical “RUclipsr” or “creator” narrative is irrelevant
Tried them both at the Apple store and had the exact same feeling about my hands trying to wrap around the laptop. I thought maybe it was because I was trying to avoid my palms resting on the gigantic trackpad. The 14 felt much more normal in terms of ergonomics. Still haven't decided though because I kinda like the huge screen.
You crushed it with that comparison, seriously good stuff! For me, though, I gotta say, I’m not big on the whole multitasking and having a bunch of windows open at the same time - at least not ones I need to see side by side. I mean, I do have apps running in the background, but it’s rare that I actually need multiple windows on display. Right now, I’m in the evaluation stage for buying a new laptop, and I think I’m leaning towards a 14-inch model, and here’s why: 1. The size feels just right for portability, perfect for meetings, and easy to set on the table when I’ve got coworkers sitting next to me on both sides. 2. If I need a bigger screen for certain tasks, I can always hook it up to an external monitor at the office. These are just my initial thoughts for now.
Great video! Gotta love window management on MacOS lol. Magnet app works for this but it is not free. I still can't believe apple hasn't made their own snappy window manager so you can easily split windows. If Apple wasn't as limiting as it is today, I might have considered these new MB Pro's. Not to mention the constant anti-consumerism. Im still looking for a decent dev laptop thats not too heavy and has a decent screen size, being premium and all and that works with linux because I use both linux and windows. Any thoughts on the Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8 with 7840S?

Magnificent video. Exhaustive, informative and practical. Thank you. I wonder if you recommend 18gb ram for the MBP 14? I’m going from the 15in MBP (10 years old) and still working and will try the 14in for portability. I’ll eventually get the 16in since im getting older (mid 50s). But for now I’ll have the more agile 14 and the older 15 in model. I have always preferred the MacBook Pros over the airs because they are noticeably brighter and have other strengths visually over the airs. Thank you again for this video!
@@TechGuyBeau Thank you again. i'll let you know how it goes with the 14in. I bet i'll really like it and welcome the portabilitty as i hope to do more traveling. I'll still have that aging 15in Pro and maybe, when ready, will go for the pricier 16in unit. Again, great, methodical and useful video. All the best!
@@TechGuyBeau Thanks again. I got the 14inch MBP today; it feels smaller than the 15inch one i've had for 10 years. Hoping i'll get used to it and not regret getting the larger, 16in model. I guess it takes time to get used to new things. Best!
If the laptop screen was going to be my primary monitor, I would take the 16". But at my desk I can use my main 40" 5k monitor for demanding tasks so the 14" for travel is better as I will also need to bring a work laptop as well.
This is the absolute BEST VIDEO for anyone debating on which size to get. No one else has done such a good comparison and provided very well thought out reasons between 16 and 14. I was thinking the 16 would suit my needs, but after listening to your reasoning, 14 will be the one for me, perfect size to carry, and can be docked with a monitor when needed. 16 is good for someone who wants an all in one without an external monitor option.
I've always got the smaller size because I always used to tell myself portability is better, but no it isn't. I recently upgraded from an 11-inch iPad Pro to the 13-inch iPad Pro and would wait for an OLED 16-inch Macbook Pro.
For me I had the 16" for 3 years and now downsized to the 14" M4 Pro MacBook Pro for portability and it's perfect. I can still fit everything I use it for on the go and still code just fine. Now I can carry it around the house and outside where I hardly did with my 16". If I want to work at the desk, just dock it to my monitors. Also, every time I use my 16" on my lap away from the desk and if I have to do work that took longer than an hour, I always went back to the desk on my 27" monitor anyway. Even the 16" wasn't big enough for me so 14" isn't all that different but at least you get the portability.
@@TechGuyBeau I actually returned the 14" for the 16" M4 Pro MacBook Pro lol. After a while, the bigger screen was just worth it to me with the louder speakers as well. I'm a software engineer and use it away from my desk for few hours a day and the 14" was getting a bit too small for me and that big gorgeous 16" was missed! Surprisingly carrying it around the weight doesn't seem that different although the 16" foot print is much bigger I still find it feel like a good laptop sleek size where its small enough to carry around. If I was traveling everywhere all day for work then 14" would be the one to carry but 95% of the time the 16" is at home just carried around the house in different places to work.
@@TechGuyBeau are u being sarcastic, we know what the 16 looks on apples site , ps love ur take on laptops keep Making videos not only smart but hot too
Really good comparison. generally most people just make it binary comparison, There is more to it. I personally played with scaling in macbook air 13 and to my surprise I found, a setting where everything is legible, and yet I get same space on screen almost same as 16 inch macbook.
I recently got the 14" and I regret it. I got the upgraded one but I still feel like I'm missing something with the extra 2 inches. I'm doing a lot more traveling so I forced myself to get the smaller version. I also have an iPad pro so I can use it as a second screen (somehow, still trying to sort that one out). I still have a few more days to return it and swap it out, but I think if I force myself to get used to it I won't notice.
To be honest you kind of get used to it. I do swap between 14 and 16 quite a bit With 16 I always miss the portability, with 14 I always miss the extra screen size. Realistically 15 inches is perfect, but they don’t offer a pro model in that size
I have been trialling both sizes and agonising over it for weeks; one has to go back! I have watched countless videos and finally I have found one which is for 'normal' people, thank you! It is going to be my only computer without an external monitor but the big chin is so annoying .. the 16 inch is going back!
Thanks. I wouldn’t call myself normal, maybe a bit of a weirdo… but I do like to approach my video for human beings, not algorithms Thanks for watching :)
This is the best video I have ever watched about the size dilemma. I also use an 14 inch, with the same portable external screens. I actually have two portable external screens, and with those, I can go anywhere, and be 90% productive. At home, I plug it to high res dual external 27 inch monitors anyways and use it in clamshell mode. In that front, 14 inch is much better because it takes less space on my desk. But… Apple displays are so good.. and just having a bigger version of that mini led display alone could justify a 16 inch. But in all other aspects, 14 inch is fine. Personally, I also find the empty space on the deck of 16 inch somewhat unpleasing for the eye as well.. Design of 14 inch is so much more complete and coherent. No wasted spaces around the keyboard. And the trackpad on 14 inch is already larger than most of the other laptops. I am a software engineer who wants snappy performance, and who likes to work with multiple desktops. When I would do something computationally intensive, I would use a cloud machine for that anyways. So, I guess 14 inch ticks all my boxes. But, if I was someone who has to run multiple virtual machines, or train some AI models, or do some heavy photo/video editing, I would just go with the 16 inch. Because of better thermal management potential, I could spec it with higher cpu/gpu. But for my needs, all I would need can be satisfied with an 14 inch entry level processor, and enough RAM. I do not need more GPU performance. So.. the only thing I could miss from the 16 inch form me, is the bigger screen.
That’s my biggest reason for getting the 16” the screen. I exchanged the m4 pro 14” mbp for the 16” as I am also a software engineer and it is just so much easier to read text comfortably. I tried the resolutions and changing the text size on the browser etc just not as comfortable as the 16” and coding for hours away from the desktop is so much nicer and comfortable on the 16”. To be honest the 16” isn’t that much heavier than the 14” but the footprint is definitely bigger which isn’t too bad either. Also on your lap feels more natural than the 14” where it’s a little too small. When I had the 14” the idea of carrying around was nice but I actually hardly still did it and I normally just carry my laptops around the house just away from the desk so to have a big display and amazing screen and sound all in one anywhere I go for a desktop experience in still in a sleek laptop is amazing. Also I don’t hear the fans at all on the 16” where the 14” I can hear it and playing steam the 14” felt noticeably warm almost hot in the bottom instantly where the 16” barely felt anything.
i have a huuuuuuge Q for u, what is happending with your 16 inch!!!! Is this some kind of Chinese version? the 16 one has the same screen framework, the same bezels, and the same notch! The only difference is the screen real estate. i have both 16 and 14...
If you need a portable laptop, go smaller. Anything above 15" is probably too big. Having had a 15" for many years, I would say that it was too chunky for a coffee shop, flight or a nightclub. It's hard to get out of the mindset that bigger is better, especially with the greater power available in larger models but if you're on the move and space and weight are important, trust me, you're not going to want to use that 16" nearly as often. If you use a computer mainly at home but sometimes go abroad etc, you're far better off getting a desktop and monitor for home use and adding something like a standard Macbook air, which are incredibly powerful and more than enough for most jobs you'll encounter on the road.
greatest review in this subject. please add 13 and 15 air to the comparison. You said your partner has 13. I really want to compare how windows look on display and how scaling will look.
Not sure. Haven’t heard anything from Lenovo yet regarding it. If it drops in price I might get one to review, otherwise I’ll wait on a possible review unit :)
I had 16" and switched to 14" for portability. 16" inch forced me to purchase a $650 Tumi backpack because it's so large. As a big dude with big hands I prefer the 14 inch. 16 inch was a monster but monsters come with their disadvantages. Don't really miss the 16 inch because I still have a decent laptop and it feels like half the weight (probably wrong on that but it just feels incredibly light). I bought the 16" because of the bigger is better idea, and it had better speakers, insane battery, but I don't want to pull it out without a desk... Can't really Lap the 16". Kind of indifferent. Don't feel like I made a mistake.
That’s where the 12.9 iPad comes in on travel, keep the Mac in your bag … that’s about perfect setup 🤷♂️ Ultra Portable and excessive workload ability same time 🎉
both are heavy. i have the 14 and although I love it i wish I had more screen. I do not like to travel with my 14 inch. it's heavy and I rather bring my Ipad. I would say go with the 16 inch because it's not a light laptop either way.

@@TechGuyBeau I agree if you’re doing a lot of editing the 16inch definitely the one to go.
Same. I’m still on the fence
What did you get
You crushed it with that comparison, seriously good stuff!
For me, though, I gotta say, I’m not big on the whole multitasking and having a bunch of windows open at the same time - at least not ones I need to see side by side. I mean, I do have apps running in the background, but it’s rare that I actually need multiple windows on display.
Right now, I’m in the evaluation stage for buying a new laptop, and I think I’m leaning towards a 14-inch model, and here’s why:
1. The size feels just right for portability, perfect for meetings, and easy to set on the table when I’ve got coworkers sitting next to me on both sides.
2. If I need a bigger screen for certain tasks, I can always hook it up to an external monitor at the office.
These are just my initial thoughts for now.
I have a question... why is your 16 inch doesn't have a notch?
Yeah I was also wondering
He might be using the app top notch.
IS that even a 16"? I'm wondering because I don't see a notch and those bezels look THICK!
Still using my 14" M1 Pro '21. Hasn't let me down yet, this is the perfect screen size for a laptop IMO. Great video pal.
Thanks. And for general mixed use 14” is still probably the best
probably one of the realest review for size comparison out there!
The yoga you mentioned is a superb laptop. One of my favourites
@@TechGuyBeau Is the fan profile good on it? Because there are almost 0 reviews on it besides a sponsored promo on youtube on another channel. Im not sure if it gets hot to the touch and loud. If you do, could you please tell me?
great video, i got my 1st MBP M3 14" i might want the 16 MBP M3 pro, but it is like 700 bucks more, not sure if its wort it... thanks for the comparison.
If you want to keep it for a long period of time. And increase its resale value should you want to do that. More RAM is always better
I'm glad it was useful
I've always got the smaller size because I always used to tell myself portability is better, but no it isn't. I recently upgraded from an 11-inch iPad Pro to the 13-inch iPad Pro and would wait for an OLED 16-inch Macbook Pro.
I've decided to go with the 16" this time because of the extra screen size. I do a lot of side by side stock comparisons and could use the space.
Thanks.Great Detail Video. What I wanted to Know you covered that.
Thanks, I agree and that's my plan, to get a 16 inch for video editing. :)
In actually revisiting this video now with m4 14 and 16.
I’ve been loving the 14”….
I don't get it lol why do u have that big of a bezel on the 16 ? did u change that cause it definitely looks worse
That’s just how the machine is
@@TechGuyBeau are u being sarcastic, we know what the 16 looks on apples site , ps love ur take on laptops keep
Making videos not only smart but hot too
He’s using an app to hide the notch.
@@JimmyInTheROC Ik but he kept saying in the video how it looks bad with a big bezel. He should tone down the sarcasm
@@JimmyInTheROC he’s hot 🥵
Really good comparison. generally most people just make it binary comparison, There is more to it. I personally played with scaling in macbook air 13 and to my surprise I found, a setting where everything is legible, and yet I get same space on screen almost same as 16 inch macbook.
Thanks for all lf the practical info
I recently got the 14" and I regret it. I got the upgraded one but I still feel like I'm missing something with the extra 2 inches. I'm doing a lot more traveling so I forced myself to get the smaller version. I also have an iPad pro so I can use it as a second screen (somehow, still trying to sort that one out).
I still have a few more days to return it and swap it out, but I think if I force myself to get used to it I won't notice.
To be honest you kind of get used to it. I do swap between 14 and 16 quite a bit
With 16 I always miss the portability, with 14 I always miss the extra screen size. Realistically 15 inches is perfect, but they don’t offer a pro model in that size
16” for desktop if you don’t want a mini and M4 iPad for travelling and use it as a second display on your desk. Otherwise a 14” as a single device.
I have been trialling both sizes and agonising over it for weeks; one has to go back! I have watched countless videos and finally I have found one which is for 'normal' people, thank you! It is going to be my only computer without an external monitor but the big chin is so annoying .. the 16 inch is going back!
Thanks. I wouldn’t call myself normal, maybe a bit of a weirdo… but I do like to approach my video for human beings, not algorithms
Thanks for watching :)
@@TechGuyBeau Which one do you have / use the most?
Excellent talk on the details.
I already have an iPad Pro 12.9 which I can use to extend the display so I will just get the 14 inch.
Thank you for this!
Thank you for all the reasoning! It all makes sense, especially getting a 16 inch when you are in a compact environment.
Time for 15 and 17 inch Macbook Pros 😊
18 inch and 20 inch macbook air please.
16” is pretty much the replacement for the old 17”. And 14” is the equivalent of the 15.4”
@@arlencarlson Nope, 16" is the same size as the 15" previously
Literally covered all aspects that a person can think of.
This is such a great video
As a music producer, the 16 might be the best choice

Best video on 14" vs 16"
This was really informative and helped me make decisions between a 16" or 14". 14" it is then
greatest review in this subject. please add 13 and 15 air to the comparison. You said your partner has 13. I really want to compare how windows look on display and how scaling will look.
I think I will go for the 15" Macbook Air
I just scored a brand new M1 Max on ebay totally sealed for 1900$. 16" and its unreal. Linux VMs run flawlessly
16 inch ftw
:O
Thanks so much (also I love me a 16” screen too)
Thanks for the video
Excellent video
just ordered the 14" m3 pro. ty.
Nice! enjoy
When will u get the Legion 5i Gen 9 for Review?
Not sure. Haven’t heard anything from Lenovo yet regarding it. If it drops in price I might get one to review, otherwise I’ll wait on a possible review unit :)
You are a G for this video!!
14 inch and 16inch both should be stopped. 15inch 16:10 is the best size
this is the best answer to the question
best video on that topic
great comparison. your bezel size comparison is inaccurate though. your 16 inch resolution isnt using the entire screen

what happened to the 16 inch display?????
Honestly this is the most helpful comparison video between 14" & 16" ever ever EVER! Thanks & love from Taiwan ❤
Which one did you take?
That’s where the 12.9 iPad comes in on travel, keep the Mac in your bag … that’s about perfect setup 🤷♂️
Ultra Portable and excessive workload ability same time 🎉
Get the 14 and use it with your Vision Pro 👍
Or with Studio Display
for yt and movies 16 duh, for work and moving 14
If you are doing CAD drawings or graphics, the 16” is a no-brainer.
99% of people don’t do that.
both are heavy. i have the 14 and although I love it i wish I had more screen. I do not like to travel with my 14 inch. it's heavy and I rather bring my Ipad. I would say go with the 16 inch because it's not a light laptop either way.
Great great great just great!!!!
That’s a sub!
I love my 16 inch so much!!
14” is the hybrid king, but I always end up with 16” laptops
it’s always the most normal video, no mind twirling b rolls

simple : small pro for coders , big one for artists
I will also go for the extra 2 inches 😅😅😅
size does matter lol

they both have terrible glossy screens
It’s not super slick!!!
