16" Macbook Pro due to the size of the screen, bigger area for palm resting, easier on the eyes, and larger track pad. I use my Ipad for traveling and watching movies on the plane. In class I prefer an Ipad and apple pencil for note taking rather than any laptop. My next laptop is likely the 15" air, perfect size and weight.
The 16 inch model is portable and the 14 inch model is not portable. When you need to move around a lot, it's more convenient to work with a larger monitor, and when you have an external monitor connected to your macbook all the time, it's more convenient to have a smaller macbook.
Another issue with the 16 inch MB Pro is the edge of the front of the notebook will generally rub against the wrists as the distance from the keyboard and front edge for the 16 inch notebook is much larger than the distance for the 14 inch notebook even when typing in the correct position. However, if the notebook is in fact being used as an actual laptop rather than desktop, this is not an issue since the elbows are at or above the notebook surface.
I am also concerned about this… I thought it was my idea after typing a bit with it at the store I visited couple of times. But something doesn’t feel right I don’t know. I want to use it mostly placed on my desk with no external monitor or keyboard
I got the 16 inch and this is my first mac, was expecting light weight, but heavier than expected. Overall performance im satisfied though. Still learning MAC
Hey CJ, I was on the fence about this very subject... in fact I'm sitting here on the Apple store app trying to figure out which Mac Pro I want to spec out. I decided to watch some comparison videos and I so happy I came across yours. Your video plus reading the comments helped a lot. I will be going with the 16" mainly because I don't travel a lot and I prefer the screen real-estate for photo / video editing over the portability of the 14". My last two MBP (Intel) have been 16”, but these days I link them to a 32” monitor for photo Lightroom and Da Vinci resolve video editing so I don’t need that 16 inch screen any more. I’m gonna get the 14 inch which for portability is only 40 g heavier than the 15 inch MacBook Air. True
For me it is neither. Getting the next refresh of the Studio and using my base MacBook Air M1 for traveling. I don’t want to carry around an expensive laptop outside that can break or get stolen. Plus the studio gives more ports.
How about 14” MacBook Pro vs 15” MacBook Air? One gives you higher refresh rate and brightness, the other a larger screen…and price likely close if the 14” goes on sale…hmmm
I'd say cost would be another factor in deciding your screen size. I went for the 14", mainly for portability reasons. Went with the fully specced out M3 Pro with 36GB of RAM and the 4TB HD. I configured both the 16" and the 14" MacBook Pros, and there was a $300 (CAD) difference between the 16 and 14" models with the same exact specs. These MacBook Pros are no doubt expensive, so if you're looking so save a bit of money that would also be something to consider as well.
@@piki0126 You mean the binned M3 Max? I seriously thought about it, but I think the M3 Pro will more than suit my needs especialy considering i'm coming from an older Intel MacBook from 2017. I'm not really going to be using it for anything too extensive -- the M3 Pro should be more than enough despite the lesser number of GPUs and CPUs. I'd much rather save the $600 tbh.
@@high_fructose_cornsyrup wouldn’t it cost the same if u went down to the 2TB option, it just seems more cost efficient than more storage to me personally
@@piki0126 That's exactly what I did. Changed my order and ended up with the Max... I think it actually is the better machine to get, and 2TB should still be more than enough. Well played Apple... well played.
The tricky thing is, if you beef up the 14” and get more performance, you also get more heat…. Which if worse enough, will slow down the processing of the 14” due to the smaller fan. But I like the portability of the 14” ahh haha but screen realestate is also good. My head hurts :(
I had the old dell xps 15 (which is as big as the 16"MBP) as soon as i used the 13" xps I stopped going out with the 15". Trust me if you go out a lot with the laptop then that portability is a huge factor
I'm in that conundrum for the MBP - 16" or 14". I work on data and am on Client sites at least 3 (maybe 4) times a week. Clients don't have monitors spare for me to use since I am a consultant so need to haul my own equipment about which is counterintuitive. Apart from hogging one of their meeting rooms which has a projector or large TV/monitor, or using a mini-projector (which I use now but need to find a wall! :)) it is not ideal, either way. I have the 14" M1 which is time for a replacement, and I'm thinking of the M3 Pro which is more than adequate.
right now apples return policy is 1-2 months not just 14 days. anything you order before 25th Dec you can return by 8th... so can get both an try them out
Really good video! I have the 16" MBP M1 and it's great but I do travel some and like going to coffee shops. I am seriously thinking about the 14". Thanks for your thoughts!

if you get the 14 inch, the pro is the max without thermal throttling as far as I can see. For me I'll return the base M3 14 inch and get a Max 16 inch 14/30, 36gb ram, 1tb SSD. also space black is too dark, I liked space grey, but instead I'll get silver.
Great video, terrific job. Kudos. As a music producer, maybe you can do some performance tests with Logic Pro. The reason this would be valuable is bc GPU, efficiency cores, graphics performance, ray tracing, Mesh, dynamic caching, and all the other bells and whistles of M3 variants have no value at all in Logic and Ableton and other DAWs. That's all just eyewash for music production. In music, it really is all about the sheer number of performance cores, and to a lesser extent how fast they are (all M3 P-cores are the same, from M3 to Max and beyond). And currently, 6 is the highest M3 P-core count. But how would the 8-core option (4 P-cores), 11-core option (5 P-cores) and the 12-core (6 P-cores) compare? That would help music producers make the better choice, where all the other differences between 14" and 16" don't really impact performance all that much, other than thermals, and that the base 14 has but one fan. And as a music producer, I hope you find this interesting: It's not an empirical test, but I took your audio samples and did a Match EQ in Logic Pro. The 14 and 16 do sound about the same, but they are not the same. There are a few little peaks and valleys in the freq response that stand out. At certain frequencies, the 16 is 5-7 dB louder than the 14, seven instances: 80, 190, 800, 2.3K, 2.5K, 3.3K, and 10K. At other frequencies, the 14 is 5-7 dB louder than the 16, also seven instances: 240, 350, 500, 1.3K, 5K, 8K, and 16K. That was not quite what I expected. If anything, I expected maybe a smooth rolloff or increase at maybe high end or low end. But that revelation notwithstanding, bottom line, in your full mix, they do sound pretty identical other than what you pointed out, and that is likely bc the peaks in the 14 spectrum analysis happen at higher frequencies than those in the 16 analysis. And that is of course with actual music and a smoothing factor of 4. Increase that to 24, and it's a bit more revealing, in that the 16 is about 2 dB louder below 700 Hz, while the 14 is about 2 dB louder above 700. I'm not sure why you compared the 11-core to the 12-core. Obviously they will perform differently, and typical stress tests include those bells and whistles I mentioned, which have no bearing on music production other than mudying the waters. The 14" can be configured as 12, identically to the 16". In fact, those are the two I am considering. One surprising thing is that due to the way Sonoma is configured, in tests with otherwise-identical configuration where one has a 1TB SSD and the other has a 512, where both have two nand chips and therefore the same I/O bandwidth, the 1TB slightly outperforms the 512. I consider the term 'binned' to be a misnomer, which implies that unbinned is somehow superior to binned. In reality, all chips are binned. The 12-core is likely designed with more than 12 cores, bc that will increase the yield without increasing the cost. Assume it is actually designed with maybe 14 cores, and one may yield 14, another 13, another 12, another 11, and another 10. That's just the reality of yield. They would take the 14 and 13 and disable the extra cores, then 'bin' that as a 12. The 12, they'd disable the two that didn't cut the mustard. It has 2 cores that didn't make the grade, yet 12 cores did. The 11, they'd disable the extra core and bin that as an 11. The 10, they'd toss. That gives them a yield of 4 out of 5. Yield would be lower if they designed the chip with only 12 cores. And who knows? Maybe those that yield at 14 will appear as a 2024 option? The exact same structure, the exact same chip, but 'binned' as a 14. That would fit Apple's typical marketing strategy like a glove, without the cost of designing an entirely new M3 chip.
Thanks for the detailed post and test! As a beat maker myself I am planning on getting a Macbook M3 Max (been on windows for over 20 years haha). Regarding more power I do think that the M3 Max definitely has more to offer than the M3 Pro, that's why I'm going for that one.
16 inch for me. My laptop is pretty much a 95% home machine that i mostly only move between rooms and the screen is stunning and the speakers are the best you're going to get on any laptop. The difficulty is you can't get the base M3 and the Pro M3 chip is no longer very compelling compared to the M3 base or M2 pro - which leaves you spending 3-4k on a Max! Well played Apple. I think I just talked myself into a 4k laptop!
I bought a 14" MBP M1 Max and love it except for the 14" screen. I am old so eyes aren't what they used to be and recording music with Ableton that has a lot of little things on screen it get hard for me to read even with the excellent screen on the MBP. So my issue now is sell the 14" and buy a 16" or just buy a external monitor to use with the 14".
monitor completely changes the experience for the better but ONLY at the desk so its up to you on the trade off cause the 16 also is annoyingly big and heavy to move around with but provides such a better experience out and about
6:53 - I think the size of the palm rest is the same. The trackpad is smaller in the 14 inch, but the palm rest looks the same if we align the edges of the trackpad.
I have the 16 inch pro M1Max! and I love it, yes it is a lil heavier & not as portable friendly like the 14 inch! but if you get the right carrying bag, you should have no problem, I use the MONO M80 Classic FlyBy Ultra Backpack which splits in half to carry just your laptop!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT

You know what's crazy? HP used to have the laptop sound game on lockdown until apple bought "beats by dre." After they bought that brand, their laptop sound quality dramatically increased. Their phone speakers probably did too. MBP 16" and iphone pro maxes are loud enough that you don't really need a portable speaker unless it's party time. I was on android at that time, and and every android phone sounds like shit coming out of the speakers. Sure it's usable, but it sucks.
As a video editor I always choose the option with more screen real estate. Sure it’s heavier and takes up more space but it’s still very portable, especially when you think about what these new laptops are capable of. This thing crushes my massive PC I built in 2017 in all ways. To have something under 5 lbs that can do anything I could ever ask of it is incredible, STOKED to upgrade. Thanks for the great video Chris Rock of tech reviews!! 😎
Well, of course it is going to beat your 2017 PC built. If you are comparing this with 2017 processor. If it comes to being close to Macbook as you are comparing it, then you agree that Apple products are just a fetish and trends that caters to the mass consumer, not true computer scientists or enthusiasts.

You can also save more with a cheap Samsung A25 etc device so believe me it will be more profitable! I have always preferred buying a Macbook or iPad instead of iPhone all my life! iPhone is just a toy when u compare it to these devices!
I've been watching a bunch of videos regarding the differences between the 16-inch and 14-inch Pro and Max since I have the opportunity to get a laptop (my first MacBook ever) but I still haven't made up my mind.
Just ordered a 14 inch with the same chip as the 16 inch and 1tb of storage. So hyped
unbelievable comparison touched on every point i was looking for, keep it up man well done
I prefer the 16" because of the larger screen, better battery, better sound, larger trackpad and better performance.
Thank you and everyone in the comment section.
unique melody vs ultimate ears is indeed tough decision, all depends on your usage and which specific type youre aiming
but if you want my advice grab jh7 instead, but your choice
I utilize both lol. My 13" inch M1 for my guest to use and when I travel. My 16" M3 stays at home and doesn't leave the house.
@@TheAscendedHuman My 13” M1 was a birthday gift and I got it on release day. It was amazing but the screen was small so I waited for the M3 16”. Once I got it was too heavy to carry around so I decided to keep my 13” The joys of having both.
@@TheAscendedHuman I have a gaming PC too. I’m a tech nerd bro…
@@TheAscendedHuman They get use almost everyday. My gf and my guest use the M1 around the house. The M3 is always in my bed, and I game every chance I get.
@@TheAscendedHuman 1st off… My parents and sister come to visit me all the time. If they need to use my M1, I always have it available for anyone who wants to use it. My M3 is not for gaming. Why would I game on a MacBook lol. I bought the M3 because I wanted a bigger screen and liked it when I went to the Apple Store. Yes I also have a Gaming PC and every console in my game room. Whats the problem?
My last two MBP (Intel) have been 16”, but these days I link them to a 32” monitor for photo Lightroom and Da Vinci resolve video editing so I don’t need that 16 inch screen any more. I’m gonna get the 14 inch which for portability is only 40 g heavier than the 15 inch MacBook Air. True
I had a 17 inch older gen and that was goofy big pause took up too much space
For me it is neither. Getting the next refresh of the Studio and using my base MacBook Air M1 for traveling. I don’t want to carry around an expensive laptop outside that can break or get stolen. Plus the studio gives more ports.
Have both the 16in M1 Pro MBP and 14in M3 Pro MBP. Honestly, if you could only have one then I would go with the 14in because of the portability.
How about 14” MacBook Pro vs 15” MacBook Air? One gives you higher refresh rate and brightness, the other a larger screen…and price likely close if the 14” goes on sale…hmmm
Best comparison I could find on RUclips. Thank you and well done!
Love the side by side comparisons
I'd say cost would be another factor in deciding your screen size. I went for the 14", mainly for portability reasons. Went with the fully specced out M3 Pro with 36GB of RAM and the 4TB HD. I configured both the 16" and the 14" MacBook Pros, and there was a $300 (CAD) difference between the 16 and 14" models with the same exact specs. These MacBook Pros are no doubt expensive, so if you're looking so save a bit of money that would also be something to consider as well.
you should look into the M3 Max with what you are paying it might be a tiny price difference for a much better laptop.
@@high_fructose_cornsyrup same thing happened to me. I upgraded the m3 pro slightly and ended up with a base m3 max 😭
Please measure the thermals. Put them under heavy load. Nobody has both the 14 and 16 macbook pro m3 pro. Thank you
That is the EXACT video in my mind when i was searching, thank you bro! Appreciate your work!
I’m glad it delivered. Thanks
nah literally!
The tricky thing is, if you beef up the 14” and get more performance, you also get more heat…. Which if worse enough, will slow down the processing of the 14” due to the smaller fan. But I like the portability of the 14” ahh haha but screen realestate is also good. My head hurts :(
same dilemma, what did you choose? @AlexNelson-jo5qv
@@oceanelucas6469 I found a MacBook m1 with 32gb haha works a treat
You should not choose the 14" with the max chip
I always go for the bigger screen and maxed out on everything.
Cool story. Thank you for sharing.
i appreciate this story as well. Excellent
I had the old dell xps 15 (which is as big as the 16"MBP) as soon as i used the 13" xps I stopped going out with the 15". Trust me if you go out a lot with the laptop then that portability is a huge factor
How does the new black color space compare? Some RUclipsrs are claiming it scratches and smudges easily compared to the silver color.
They definitely have different sound profiles I thought the 14 M3 sounded clearer but like you say the 16 has a bigger lower end soundstage.
Get my sub for the fact that you covered all the info I was looking for
I got the 16 with M3 Max coming on the 16th of Nov, This is my first Apple silicon coming from a intel base Mac Pro 7,1
A wise man.
How you like it bro bro I’m thinking about 16 m3 mac 36gb ram and 2tb ssd
right now apples return policy is 1-2 months not just 14 days. anything you order before 25th Dec you can return by 8th... so can get both an try them out
Great review. And you talked about thermals & physics!
Just copped the 16. I carry so much gear on the daily, I’m good
I went 14” but it runs on my 42” LG C3 Oled display

Hi, I would buy your setup, all goes well ?
In spain I can only seem to get 16" if i order it with the M4 pro not with just M4
For coders I recommend 16 inch.
This is the comment I needed
Just what I was looking for!
Really good video! I have the 16" MBP M1 and it's great but I do travel some and like going to coffee shops. I am seriously thinking about the 14". Thanks for your thoughts!
I love travelling, and, sometimes, I need to carry my laptop with me. I also carry it to work in cafés somedays. But I really like the larger screen and longer battery life of the 16". What would you advise me to do? Thank you.
My favorite RUclipsr thank you again, I am buying the 16” M3 Max, Keeping my M1 13” Pro mit Touch Bar🥰 for when I travel, I can’t lie love my Touch Bar❤️🤗😉.
I got the 15 inch M3 love it perfect size
Does M3 Max 16'
40 core, 64gb ram and 2TB draining the battery faster?
if you get the 14 inch, the pro is the max without thermal throttling as far as I can see.
Bro i think for Logic even m1 with enough ram will handle anything you throw at it.
If its a home machine you can plug it in screens and have a 14…
I bought a 14" MBP M1 Max and love it except for the 14" screen. I am old so eyes aren't what they used to be and recording music with Ableton that has a lot of little things on screen it get hard for me to read even with the excellent screen on the MBP. So my issue now is sell the 14" and buy a 16" or just buy a external monitor to use with the 14".
monitor completely changes the experience for the better but ONLY at the desk so its up to you on the trade off cause the 16 also is annoyingly big and heavy to move around with but provides such a better experience out and about
just get external displays. so you have big displays and portability with the 14 inch :)
Not the best choice with the Max chip
The memory difference is the main reason for 16". 8GB isn't really pro level. Fast processors mean nothing without proper memory.
6:53 - I think the size of the palm rest is the same. The trackpad is smaller in the 14 inch, but the palm rest looks the same if we align the edges of the trackpad.
This definitely helped in my choice bro. 16 is for me 📌 great comparison
Glad it helped
I have the 16 inch pro M1Max! and I love it, yes it is a lil heavier & not as portable friendly like the 14 inch! but if you get the right carrying bag, you should have no problem, I use the MONO M80 Classic FlyBy Ultra Backpack which splits in half to carry just your laptop!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT
Good vid, I would go with the 16 but might as well wait an see how the m4s look like.
I went with both so i can compare and contrast on them. Whichever one i don’t like i will give to my brother.
Somebody’s loaded…

Summary: just buy whatever and try it for three years, after that you will know what you really need and want.
true, mastering audio is really long, long process
Love the bigger screen for photo editing
Every time I tune into CJ's RUclips channel, I can't shake off the feeling that it echoes the style of Chris Rock. It’s as if there’s a subtle yet undeniable parallel in their approaches. Now, imagine the possibilities if CJ were to host an interview with Chris Rock, especially focusing on his use of Mac and iPhone. Such a session wouldn't just be informative, entertaining, but potentially groundbreaking in its appeal. The prospect itself is quite exciting! 🔥😂
I just bought an M3 Pro with 36 GB of RAM and 1T SSD. My old Macbook lasted 10 years. So, I think this new Macbook will be good for another 5 or 10 years. 16" screeens does not appeal to me. I have a 32" monitor for more real estate for work. I am going to do a lot of travel this Summer and the portability of the 14" Mac will suit me better.

First time I rolled in, CJ, and I’m smiling happy that I did! What a wonderful, balanced and well paced presentation…whew, quite a bit of surely felt but unseen skill behind its making. Thank you, sir-you’ve certainly got the goods. Being a seniorish citizen and mostly a castle-bound worker now, I’m thinking 16s my number.
As for the set-up, if I will be using this device to edit photos…Photoshop-Lightroom-Luminar, as well as do simple research in the Web and enjoy movies and videos, what would your recommendations be? I really, and I mean really am looking forward to your reply. So thanks for it! Hi CJ, thanks for this informative video. Could you help me decide between 16" M3 Pro/36GB/1TB in $2850 and 14" M3 Max/36GB/1TB in $3050. My main work is Programming, Medium Heavy Video editing, Graphic Design and some animation. I'm looking for a model that's future proof. I heard max consume more battery than Pro version?
You know what's crazy?
HP used to have the laptop sound game on lockdown until apple bought "beats by dre."
After they bought that brand, their laptop sound quality dramatically increased.
Right! especially for that video editing timeline space. Lol😂
Well, of course it is going to beat your 2017 PC built. If you are comparing this with 2017 processor. If it comes to being close to Macbook as you are comparing it, then you agree that Apple products are just a fetish and trends that caters to the mass consumer, not true computer scientists or enthusiasts.
I picked wrong but I haven’t got it yet so I’m taking it back to the store to swap it out for a different one for about £330 more

Good info!!!. Another consideration is many ppl have another monitor and keyboard/mouse. So for me weight is the only consideration.
Good video!
I really don’t mind the weight of the 16”…. For portability I understand those that go smaller. But then it would have to be a MBA. The 14” has always been a weird product IMO after they offered the air.
True, though with the MBP you also get additional external display capability compared to the MBA.
depends. the air is not as specced out and sn't ideal for people that need portable performance. ie video editing, game dev, serious software dev, etc. Also video/photography and graphics professionals prefer the screen quality and peripherals in the 14" vs Air.
Thank you!!
Let me compare the sound! I have an M3 MacBook Air 13 with Boom2 software on! Guys next door warn me of the loudness when I play music with full sound lol Guys believe me there is nothing like an Apple device when it comes to sound quality! My advice would be buying a 16 inch basic M3 Max version besides a MacBook Air 13 basic for home and travel use!
I'm rarely traveling far from my home (mostly to school, cafes, or other nearby cities). I’d use this laptop for school and editing; PPT presentations, documents, writing essays, editing photos, watching videos, (sometimes playing minecraft or roblox)…etc. Could anyone help me decide what to get? I still have 2 weeks time before I get it. 😁
What size are you leaning towards and why? (always follow your gut)
I like mini led more than oled
I wish I would have gone with the 16 over the 14. I use to have the 16 and it was too big but the 14 has a scene comparable to my iPad Pro 12.9..... so I have a very powerful iPad now lol. but I do have it set up with 3 monitors so that's nice...

Your question shows that you truly do not know much of computers. Hence, why Macbook users buy premium laptops that they underutilize and only use for browsing the web. That is probably 99% of Apple consumers are using a Macbook for. Might as well just get a Chromebook.
