You forget that silence at the end of stacks is him putting down his guitar, getting up, and plugging the phone back in. It’s a symbolic representation of ending self induced isolation. The end of a season
So glad this was recommended in my feed. Not only a masterful deep dive into the works Bon Iver, but a true ode and love letter to all things Bon Iver. Amazing narration and well-produced. I am grateful and wishful for this video to reach far into the community. Thank you for making this.

@@alexs_headNo, thank you! It's hard to describe to others/my friends how meaningful Bon Iver is to me but I can find solace in knowing there are other Bon Iver stans amongst us.
I‘ve listened to the 2015 live version of 89 so many times that if it ever comes out officially I’m gonna miss the guy going WOOOO as the final chorus kicks in
For those who haven't listened to "Ceiling In Our Garden: A Bon Iver Mashup Project", you must check it out. A fan project Justin Vernon let them sell casettes with the mix on after hearing it. (Haven't finished the vid yet so no idea if this got mentioned, but if you like Bon Iver, it's phenomenal listening.)
This video not only made the wait for Sable, any shorter. But it helped me with rediscovering unrealeased songs or songs released outside of the albums and ep... I feel this video also really capture what is so amazing about Bon Iver. For every song, you can dive deep into the water and discover the iceberg of words, lyrics, symbols and instruments. Thank you for showing whats behind everything that is Bon Iver, and thank you for the chills and tears of me hearing 89 for the first time.
I've been a fan of Bon Iver since 2007. The different albums came at such huge changes in my life I will always look back on the discography with happy, and sometimes painful, memories. My favorite artist by far, and can't wait for what he does next. I noticed you're also in Vancouver, where I'm based, so I'm praying we get some tour dates here soon. What a fantastic video.
Ohhh yeah - I've only seen him once in 2019 and I'll be disappointed if they never come back. I'm hoping this new release cycle will have some tour dates
The JV solo albums were briefly mentioned but you're definitely right - lots of people have commented that the other bands in the Bon Iverse should have had a little spotlight. I tried to focus only on Bon Iver, but Gayngs, DeYarmond Edison, Volcano Choir, Marijuana Deathsquads, etc. are all significant to the history as well. If I make a sequel they will be included :D
Thanks for making this. I’m from Eau Claire and delighted to feel connected to the band and Justin and Sean in that way. I definitely learned a thing or two from this video! A sequel would be epic! Maybe plug S. Carey too :) Have a nice day.
Also, thank you so much for this video, I got until Level 4 proudly! One thing to add: Justin Vernons feature on Hadestown with Anais Mitchell that turned out to be a very succesful musical theatre piece, where he sings as the main character Orpheus and uses vocal effects to mimic a "godly" effect :)
That was such a cool video!! I new a lot of those appart from Brackett (weirdly) and some of the unreleased songs at the end. Thank you! (also, i'm the 22nd like)
Well this document deserves much more views, thank you for this. Happy to agree that For Emma Take Away Show is one of the best live version of any music ever recorded.
This is an amazing video, thank you so much for all your work and research. I thoroughly enjoyed my rabbit hole as a massive Bon Iver fan. I have like 10 tabs open to watch/listen to after this video. My only feedback, as a Scottish person, is that Glenlivet is pronounced like "Glen Live et" -live as in To live, not live, like a live performance.
Flume on the radio sitting in traffic coming home from work (in 2007 probably thanks npr!) and been hooked ever sense , if any musicians are curious there are two piano arrangement books for eponymous and and 22 a million and the arrangements are very good. Worth it.
Great video man. Can't help but feel that Emma Jensen, in light of her place in Bon Iver lore, deserves her own spot. You could've probably went with Volcano Choir, Sam and Phil Cook, Deyarmond Edison and even 'Lip Parade/Amateur Love' (Josh Scott/Aero Flynn) as separate entities.
Yeah I’ve gotten a ton of suggestions of topics I missed. This comment alone contains a whole video’s worth in the history of the band. I’m debating if I should make a sort of sequel that includes all these suggestions

Epic video, hadn’t actually heard the Hayward track either and I felt like I knew it all! Would’ve been a cool nugget to include the moment Justin sand and maybe even cried with Fionn Regan, and also used the hook from an early regan song on 22amillion.
didnt consider myself the biggest fan, but i recognised maybe 95% of the things here. guess i am Just a correction, on the end or Re:stacks, its not 50 seconds of silence, if you turn the volume up higher, you can hear Justin standing up and putting down his guitar and turning on a landline. I'm guessing its symbolic of him rejoining the world after the isolation that For Emma is based on. awesome vid btw, love to see more of this
I really like that thought - now I gotta listen to re: stacks again… You’re right though, I am wrong in saying it’s “complete” silence 🤫 everything has meaning in the Bon Iverse
My introduction to Bon Iver was through the Twilight soundtrack. Though the twilight franchise is infamous, I loved the soundtrack to it to the point where I followed the bands/artists after it. Bon Iver stood out, I've been hooked to the band ever since. Not a year goes by that they are not in my spotify wrapped top 5 most played. I listen to the band religiously. My dream is to hear them live, whether they come to South Africa or I make my way to the US. Thanks for making this video, I thoroughly enjoyed it
36:36 actually not true. There’s a sound on sound article with Messina describing the EXACT gear used. They’re running Antares Auto-Tune snapping to the nearest octave into the MIDI Harmony preset on the Eventide H8000. You can do it with any DAW and the Eventide Octavox plugin.
Your comments on Re: Stacks were interesting to me because I've always thought of it as more of a reflective closure song. Sad or tragic feel like the wrong words to me, especially with the more hopeful ending. Its like a peaceful reflection and coming to terms then moving on which to me is why you can hear him put the guitar down and walk away.
The dark was the night album started it all for me. Along with several other discoveries like dirty protectors. Not sure how his volcano choir participation would fit in, but it's not a part of the bon over universe, I guess. Thoroughly enjoyed it all, surprised I had already seen a lot of the ice berg after all. He also even corrected lyrics online under his blobtower nick. What a completely different type of guy. Like when Springsteen comes to contribute Justin just puts him in the background!? I was very surprised to not see a "k" behind your subscriber counter.
wow... so much information... I was trying to came out myself with explainations about things and... I end up wrapped up in their music and I forgot about everything... the "over soon" for me was like "where the hell am I? So hot. So crowded. So dissociative." it was like me hating summer but having decided to go on holiday in a hot and sunny island...
I believe it. I have only done some cursory listening but I definitely want to do a deeper dive (especially on Collapse List - haven't even listened yet!)

Speyside creation date has been confirmed!
