Awesome Machine, Ive got an 05 Wildcat with the clamshell bagger and it is an amazing machine, 3200 hours on the kohler command pro 27hp and still runnin, Very well done on the purchase and rebuild on it, Looks like a brand new machine
Its too bad the seller lied. And that a few random commenters think they know what happened better than the person who actually bought the mower and actually spoke to and interacted with the seller. Nice to see things repaired and brought back to life. Too many just throw things away and buy something new nowadays when there are issues. Great job. A lot of work but looks great.
Awesome work on the scag looks great and nice to see that you took the time to fully service it! I love my scag mowers they work great and most of the parts are all serviceable on them rather than replacement parts.
This one took a little longer than you expected but in the end your patients paid off and you have a really nice riding mower worth much more than you paid for it. I have really come to enjoy this channel especially the ones where you find and fix what others have given up on. Not only entertaining but very educational for someone like me who knows very little when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next project.
This was the video I have been waiting for and it did not disappoint me at all, another great video. I have a Turf Tiger and it is 25 years old and still runs great and I have had almost no problems with it. I am looking forward to seeing the restoration of the turf tiger just as much as I was this wildcat. Wish I had the knowledge to do something like this but I can see you are a pro. Also love the accent.
I would have taken all the tins off the new engine and checked and cleaned it out of any dirt and debris. Keep the old engine for some spare parts, if you need to get rid of it, keep the valve train, coils, exhaust. Great job and I look forward to more videos. Be blessed.
Thank you! I made sure to clean everything and when I was fully done I pressure washed under all the tins just in case! The other motor I assembled back and will definitely save it for parts!
Certainly a good deal in spite of the bad motor. That sized exhaust valve condition is caused by hours of running overhead. It’s important to keep grass out from around the cylinders and heads. I always blow compressed air back around the spark plug openings and up the bottom of the cylinder fins when I put my Scag and other gas engine lawn equipment away after I’m finished with my lawn.
Enjoyed watching your good work. A suggestion for you. If you are going to continue to lift heavy stuff like that engine, you should invest in steel toed boots or shoes. I would also suggest you build a lifting device or buy one. One slip could bring on a disaster. I have seen it happen.
Was the oil drain back hole in the head full of oil plugged up? If it is, then the breather tube would suck oil and cause the excessive smoking you were seeing. If the push rods are hollow, then they get pressurized oil, which would fill up behind the valve cover and explain the excess oil, along with the plugged drain, versus blaming the piston rings.
THIS is probably the issue, if the oil can't get out of the valve cover and head it will find its way past the valve guides or thru the breather and into the combustion chamber . Probably a plugged passage that wont let the oil back into the crankcase.
Seller didn't lie to you. He sold you a ztr for next to nothing. I go through the same thing the aggravation of selling off worn out older an equipment is a fact of life and part of the landscaping trade. The tires on your mower have the tread still so thats worth $250. You got a decent mower frame deck and seat thats worth $500. The hydro's work thats 2 pumps and 2 wheel motors thats another $2000. The blades work so that means the pto and pto switch works thats another $400. Muffler on these things are surprisingly expensive another $250. So the engine was worn out did you really think he just retired the mower for no reason. No we run them 3000-5000 hours at that point the repairs are so frequent they have lost their economic usefulness and we replace them. As someone that mows for a living and does it solo I am cutting $3200 a week in lawns so I see this through the eyes of 1 weeks cuts with a 30 week season. Don't dwell on the little repairs its cost of business,
Thumbs up on this one! Sorry about my negative comment a couple videos before - changed my mind to give you another chance and glad I did! I'm also glad you finally heard me when I was yelling, "Seat switch, seat switch!!!". ;-) I have a ruptured L5-S1 spinal disc from lifting a marine battery off a boat up onto a dock over my chest height 20 years ago. Once you've damaged your spine no matter what kind of operation you get you'll never be the same. Protect your back! Maybe build a wooden gantry to do some of the heavy lifting from time to time?
Where would I do it if I didn't do it home. I removed the engine on my zero turn and replaced the crankcase gasket, it was leaking oil, Briggs and Stratton engine 25hp twin
Love how on your thumbnail you claim the seller lied to you. When the seller probably didn’t know the extent of the mechanical damage to the engine. Maybe just maybe they are not mechanical experts and don’t know how to fix an engine, especially if it has extensive damage, and it appears that you still got a good machine for cheap even with the repairs so why complain?
I’m not mad at all 🙂 I still got a super good deal. There’s just no way they didn’t know that it smokes so much on warm up. My only complain is if they were honest with me from the start I would right away replace the engine but I spend money and time repairing it which was a waste. If they told me that it smokes like that I would still buy it.
Great job on the transfer. You have a hell of a memory. You have a good little helper there too. Maybe they could help you on your next motor pull out. Stay safe.
I don’t know but I’ve had alot of success with scag as long as you keep it maintained like any engine yes I do like a Kawasaki engine but scag has done me good
I was thinking similar. If the one head was bad and the engine was running on the original engine chances are the other engine needed a head gasket I. The other side. It would be interesting to see if you could replace the head gasket and see if it runs without smoking on an engine stand. Might make for good content.
When I was replacing the head I also replaced both headgaskets, I’m thinking more the oil rings were stuck unless I got a defective head gasket that’s always a possibility 😬
That stored-up oil in the valve most likely is your smoke problem, Why was the oil not draining back to the crankcase? If you can solve this problem the old motor may be reusable with a new set of rings etc.
Surely five minutes and a coat of paint on the flywheel would have protected it from rusting like it already has and made it last a little longer. Being American made it won't last very long anyway, but you could try to help it a bit.

Good impressive jpb but boy my back and legs hurt watching you powerlift that engine should called a buddy over or buy cheap engine hoist.....dont do stuff like this again your back gotta last you your lifetime.....amazing skills here while most guys your age cant even change a flat tire.
Great job, good video but why bash the seller so many times, you bought a used forgotten mower a blown motor would have been on top of your list of things wrong with it
I’m sorry you got a lemon. It’s hard to believe anything people say nowadays especially if you buy something on Facebook by selling trade or Facebook marketplace if something wrong with it, just be straight up, honest about it from the get-go but when it said and done, you’ll have a good lawnmower you gonna put the new heads on it as well
Yes for sure, I’m not mad about it, it would just be nice to know it from the start so I didn’t have to spend time and money repairing the original motor but go straight for replacing it.
What did you expect for $400 dollars. The deck was worth that! Nice rebuild, but something tells me you made this video to play victim for more views(just my opinion)…
Kawasaki is the bees knees. Keep the valves adjusted, the oil and the engine/oil cooler clean, and you'll be happy owner. Quiet, more efficient, and more responsive. Skip the valve adjustments, or let it get too dirty, and you're gonna be upset.

Great job sir, keep on what you do
While he had the blower shroud off he should have tightened the sump bolts as these always leak unless you tighten them each time it's open.
Looks like new, good job
Should have checked the valve lash on the "new" engine. You had the covers off.

Where did you find a used engine ?
Hello great work , just wondering , on the engine mounting bolts what did you use , locktite, or anti size compound?
you can put a new head on that side and the motor is good
I did put new head and head gasket but it did not help 😕
What I’d like to know is…

How many hours did it have on it ?😮

That might be a drain back issue and could be the reason that last motor failed.
May I buy some parts from scrap mower
Why didn't you do a rebuild?
I wish I could buy that mower from you !
