- Jon Anderson's synth-folk masterpiece "OLIAS of SUNHILLOW" performed live and complete at UMASS LOWELL on April 22nd, 2013. Jon was with us via SKYPE to open the concert, and a powerful night of music was enjoyed by all. Musicians included special guest Thomas Deis of 'Project Moorglade' as well as a 60 voice choir and live synth, percussion, mandolin, and more all played by college students from the University.
The UMass Lowell Choral Union is directed by Dr. Tom Malone.

This has to be the most Jon Anderson could every dream of as a great compliment to his music! He should feel very happy and proud as well as blessed as his music touched people in such a way! His Music is and always shall be great as I'm a loyal fan since 1972. This performance is fantastic!
A wonderful tribute to the greatest album that was ever recorded.
There is no doubt in this 👍
I am so happy I was given an original album by a very sweet old hippy. The original buyer. We used to bum around when I was in my teens. I am up to age 46 now, with a grandson of my own. This still reconnects me to the spirit of the earth and it's gifts. After a lifetime I have found eating organic from the earth, not chemically grown, and eating a large variety of fruits, vegetables, tubers, and mushrooms, helps. When you are healing what man has destroyed however, to do it quickly, try a liquid organic juice 3 day. I add liquid kefir at first. Fruits early, veggies later in the day. After 3 days add, organic cheeses, organic yogurt, organic oatmeal in the am. Perhaps a hard boiled egg for breakfast or lunch. Work your way up to hard greasy foods. Don't go crazy cleaning your food at first. I think we need the soil bacteria and fungus in our track. I think we need to eat the bruised or damaged stuff. Obviously cut off what is rotten of too bruised, but just don't be as picky. Pick the one's about to go, not the freshest. Soon you can listen to your body, not mind, then you can listen to the earth once more, as intended. Blessings to you Jon Anderson.
my jaw dropped when I saw this masterpiece performed. everyone involved should be ecstatic for being involved in such a breathtaking piece of , unfortunately, little-heard gem from the co-founder of one of the greatest bands of the 20th century. kudos to all involved and I bow deeply to your rendition. thank you for making my day...
So happy they did this! Best trip to Boston ever!
carl sedon I bought the album (original cover art, etc.) in 1976. I immediately fell in love with it. Unfortunately it was stolen in a 1979 burglary. To me, at least, this will always be my favorite Jon Anderson solo work. I did replace it with a CD, but still, nothing can replace the original vinyl.
+highlife0586 I too, bought the vinyl disc back in the day and I am pleased to still have it. It is in great condition too. I always loved Jon Anderson's stuff and OOS was, and is, a masterpiece.
@@John42ification It was Lowell ;) Glad you could make it!
@@maryt6426 They did three shows of this. I went to all three. Two of the three were in Boston ... :)
im an old prog rock fan
and this is really amazing !
its great to see the kids of our time exposed to these masterpiece !
bravo !
In 1976 I was just about 2 years into Yes. I was finding solo efforts by various band members and wanted it all. At the time, I had just completed my first reading of "The Hobbit" and thought this would be a fine musical addition to my library. After the first time through it, I went back and bought another album so I could have one to wear the tracks off of and another to keep. I still have that second purchase. The only thing I did was to take the plastic off so it didn't warp the vinyl. I can't get enough of Yes.
A lucky man (your second copy)
Also, Jon, I don't know if you'll look at this, but I'd like to thank you for your work over the last 40 years; it has been a huge pleasure and inspiration to me, and I'd love for you to know how much it's appreciated!

Breathtaking ambition to attempt this work, amazingly good performance!
Amazing that you could get a choir interested in this today! Dr. Malone must be a Yes fan from way back (like me!) You may not get many hits, but thank you for creating this wonderful tribute to Jon and his spirit of peace and love. Long live Olias!
It doesn't hurt that this is such an accomplished choit and director in such a superb college of music! Bravissimo!
Jon's "Olias Of Sunhillow" is one of my all-time faves...i rank it above 90% of all Yes music, in fact. i've spent decades gliding on the Moorglade, and i'm so, so very happy that someone has *finally* stepped up to do a performance of this awesome work! thank-you UMASS and Dr. Malone and Thomas Deis and everyone else associated with this performance...and, of *course* a special thank-you to *Jon Anderson* who has truly answered the question, "where does music come from?" (^.^)
Overall, very, VERY impressive. You can tell that they believed in themselves & put their hearts & souls into the the performance. I'd be very interested to hear Jon's reaction to it!
Like someone said in Progressive Ears: Seeing Live a rendition of Olias of Sunhillow is like a moon landing! OMG is he so right, this is totally unique and a once in a lifetime event. Sadly this was not professionally recorded or was never supported by greedy corporate America who saw no commercial success in it. But thanks to UMass Choral union, Dr. Malone and Thomas Deis, exceptional indeed!
Amazing job guy's, well done ,Jon will be proud
Timeless !
my faith in the future restored well done , superb
Yes!
Yessssssss! That's positivity my friend.
Outstanding Effort. Cheers.
Decided to listen again, hss been performed any where else since then? If so where. I just cant hold back tears of joy. 😁
I was given a copy of OofSH in 1977 by a friend, never knowing how deeply it would go on to effect my life... All Jon's music has. for those of us who are affected thus it is hard to explain the perfect fit it has made with my soul. As a mathematician I would describe it as congruent with my sense of being. Entangled at a heart felt level. There is a religous feel definitely, and I don't know why but to the runner always brings me tears of joy.
They performed it three nights, got better each night!
William Ackley
You just described 100 other Yes/Jon songs. Especially the tears.
This album came out when my parents had just bought a new, really good stereo-- the first that wasn't a single heavy piece of furniture, but one with two separate speakers, receiver/amp. Set a chair between those separated speakers, turned the volume up, and Olias of Sunhillow was just absolutely glorious.
I was there, and it was incredible!
You were at that performance?! Tell us about it, man. Come On! What was it like?
Steve Hill
It was the last of the three performances, and the best! First night was the night that Boston was shut down, hunting for the Boston Marathon terrorists. We were in a church, at one point heard sirens go by, and I was wondering if the police were chasing them past the church! Anyway, I wish all three nights could be made available on DVD! For those of us who dreamed for years that the whole "Olias" would be performed live start-to-finish, this was truly a dream come true! Three magical nights celebrating Jon Anderson's best album!
John42ification that must have been so surreal- that suddenly during this ethereal concert you hear sirens during such a blissful time. I would have been stunned, not knowing what happened.
The sirens caught me off guard, but I tuned back in to the performance because it was so amazing!
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I went to America's Stonehenge before going to the concert ... :)
I remember the speakers of my old stereo rattling during the start of this album! ;)
Transcriptions were done directly from the record, and arranged for SATB. It is not commercially available, but if other groups wanted to perform it, I could provide the notation - with Jon's permission of course.
If you ever do it again, I'll get on a plane again to go to it! Just let me know, please! ... :)
1minute n..and tears. so much love for/in/from this music.
blessings to all
Wow! I'm stunned,,,from such an obscure album...this was a favorite of mine in high school...who would even attempt such an endeavor? Great music lives on for another generation to discover.
I'm so glad Naon is the best rendition so far. Def my favorite section of that album :D
For the love of god I wish I had known about this...., I would have been there. This gave me freakin' goosebumps - so awesome - what a great job!!!! Bravo Dr. Malone and all the fabulous performers. I love this album. Spent hours and hours singing and playing my guitar to this over the years. What a thrill it must have been to perform live... I'm sure it wasn't easy!!!
the tears came pouring out as soon as sound out the galleon started, what a masterpiece!
This musical expression is best, and I mean at its ultimate best, is not to be ignored.
Blown away. I would have never guessed in a million years that anyone would perform this album. The choir was perfect for this piece of music.
What a surprise, I love it my favorite.
And to think, Jon basically created this music in his garage... by himself
I simply never thought I'd hear or see this done live. Thank you so much UMass Lowell. Such a treat.
Just discovered this jewel! Thank you to the director, all the kids and all of the musicians! May Jon's music live on in young performers! Mozart does, so will Jon Anderson! Great inspiration! May there be more of such wonderful projects!
... Thx Jon ...
From Argentina, Buenos Aires. Many years loving this masterpiece of Jon Anderson. If I close my eyes, I could easily be transported to a fantastic animation sci-fi poetic movie, it is a very inspiring work. Applause for those who play this magnific interpretation. It's almost a kind of spiritual futuristc ritual. Thanks!
Huh? (in tears). OMG I so love this album. Never heard it done live until now.
It gave me chills sitting there witnessing it!
This is a trip even before I start the first note
It was definitely a trip for me before the first note started. I flew in from Minneapolis to Baltimore, then drove up to Boston. After this, drove back to Baltimore for the first and last time I ever saw and heard the band U.K. in concert! R.I.P. John Wetton.
Thank you friend
Even though it was not a Yes album,I think Olias was the best. Better then Close to the Edge, Relayer etc. Fantastic record. Congrats to UMass Lowell Choral Union for performing this masterpiece. Goosebumps!
Tales beats this 😂
Tearing up and getting goose bumps!
One of my favorite albums of all time. It's a brilliant masterpiece... Wonderful performance! I was moved to tears watching this.
I live in Portland, Maine and I seriously considered coming down for this performance, but unfortunately I couldn't swing it on a weekday. Great work!
I went to America's Stonehenge before going to this! Best Earth Day ever!
Excellent Job!
What an ambitious effort. Congratulations.
Very ambitious.. Great work. To all involved.. I'm currently working with Jon on the new project and I look forward to mentioning this to him. Well done
Did the new project ever get released? Is it still coming?
I miss you Michael!
Shivers! Tears.
Amazing, very good job. Is a pleasure to me, find so many people around the world in resonance with this masterpiece. Thanks John for to be a light being !
I came here by accident, I was just scrolling through some music. What a nice surprise, I like it. This is really well done.
Congratulations to your amazing performance!
Peter Kroll, Singapore
EXCELLENT! I loved it!
I'm getting shivers...so beautiful!
Wow who would've thought of making this a choral piece !!!!!!!Bravo how cool what a cool idea, the entire cd, man very cool. Thanx Doug for the post on your channel.
Wow amazing. :D Out of that solo period Jon and Chris were the most triumphant for sure! This is a great rendition of this, it's nice to hear it differently after wearing out the original so hard over the years.
No way you can omit Steve Howe's solo efforts...Beginnings and The Steve Howe Album both are AWESOME !!!
Truly wonderful effort, so glad I stumbled across a piece of pure magic. Well done to all involved, I'm sure the great man was thrilled.
Studying his facial expressions from the Skype feed, I could tell that he was!
...absolument génial! Breathtaking, amazing, what a job it is to play such a piece of music, bravo and chapeau to all .... for me this is also a very profond hommage to Jon Anderson, whose music (with Yes) always accompagnied during my life .... Bless you all

Superb, one of my favourite albums it was never off my turntable in 1976, congratulations to all involved, you should all be proud of yourselves
Wow. I love the orchestration. I have often thought I'd love to see this done as a ballet but this made me realize what a great concert it is too. Well done UMass Lowell. Loved Jon's original album from a first hearing and I love this too.
Beautiful
Super project, excellent choice :-)
This will still be sung in 100 years , when the Yes songs of the 1980's will have faded like a bad dream .
Tears welling.......
I am crying!! This is beautiful
Applause to whomever came up with the crazy brilliant idea of doing Olias of Sunhillow live in 2013. I wish I could have been there. Special thanks to Rebecca Hansen for the goosebumps, and to Thomas D for Project Moorglade. I would love to hear a live version with a proper soundboard mix.
Un pur chef d'oeuvre inaltérable avec les ans !
Jon must've been proud, this is truly a great performance of a awesome piece of music!!!
Jon briefly Skyped with us right before the last of the three performances!
thats awesome
I love this arrangement. It goes so well with a small ensemble plus choir. Of course the music is pure magic.
OMG! This is amazing!
Yes, Tyler, Yes it is!
Fabulous. Naon, live!
This is just awesome. Loved it. Glad someone had the idea to do this.
Ditto.
Kudos to UMASS LOWELL!!!!!!!!
Truly amazing
I would have LOVED TO BE THERE for this!!!
It was incredible to be there! I wish someone would do it again!
WOW. Extraordinary. What a project to base a live concert on. Am an avid fan of all things prog and Yes related, but you guys really worked to the bone to do this "oft forgot" opus justice. Beautifully projected. Wish I was there.
Pretty impressive! I never thought I get to see this performed live, but then you never know what strange things are going to happen in this life. Special shoutout to the solo vocalist Rebecca Hansen on "Quoqac en Transic"!
Masterpiece!!!
It brings me joy to think that this wonderful piece of music will live on even longer now that it is in the memories of these young people. VERY nicely played all. Thank you so much.
WOW! What have I just found? Wonderful!
XI: CHORDS is my favorite passage in this work... You nailed it!
I love this album and also this live performance. I have listened to this so many times I can't estimate the number. It's amazing how true to the original you got it! If you ever do it again, I would like to see some closer camera shots of the musicians and the singers.
a terrific well done to everybody involved in this!!
Absolutely splendid work. Well done to everyone involved!
This is really, really lovely.
Yes it is!
How wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never thought this could be re-performed!
Just beautiful! Chills and tears...
How wonderful! Thanks for doing this! I hope maybe Jon will do it with an orchestra or a rock band on tour. It is the most exquisitely beautiful thing!
Jon has promised that he would. I hope that he can keep that promise!
Jon did Moorglade and Runner on his recent 1000 hands your
@@spewgilist I know, but he's also promised to do the whole thing, with a band, an orchestra or both. Still hoping that he will still do that!
It'd be even more tear-taking
I remember when he made the album he said "nearly brought him to his knees, as it truly was a solo album. I think he did every track on the album.
Truly a fantastic listen. I share thoughts with others...wish I had known about this performance. It is one of my favorite pieces if music and this gave me chills. Great work. Do it again.
Please come to Argentina Jon NOW , I beg you, since ND Ateneo I cant see you , GBY JON

Beautiful! Great work!!!!
FairPlay absolutely brilliant good to see still so many hippies about😊❤️
Cómo me hubiera gustado que hubiera quedado registrado un video completo de esta obra de arte…pero de 1976 cuando se la grabó !!!😢❤
This should have been recorded professionally with better video. So much work went into this!
Wow sorry for over-commenting but Naon almost had me crying at the end. That was fucking fantastic.
Kudos! Great job.
Glorious !!!! Annoying Music !!! Jon Anderson win the heaven with this masterwork !!!
+Ramon Campos :)
Annoying?
Fantastic. I bought this when it came out, when I was 14. The long, hot Summer of '76, _"Hot colour, melting the anger to stone."_
