  • Trying to get this silversides bus back in the road for the first time in decades. This bus took a couple of weeks to get it to this point. Hard work is starting to pay off. It’s almost ready to get back on the highway.

Tubmaster 5000 I rode on a Greyhound(Silversides) with my Mom and baby Brother, down to San Bernardino, and on the way back to Portland, we were on 101 in the winding Redwoods highway, and the clutch went out. So we were transferred to a newer Greyhound, a 4104, I suppose. This was in 1952. My Brother cried a lot, I mainly remember. I loved riding in the old Silversides, and that was the last time, for Greyhound retired them, shortly thereafter.

What a great looking bus, my kind of vehicle, another bit of history saved. Well done all.In all the videos I have watched of yours, there is one part of the buses that has never been worked on, the lever mechanism for closing the passenger door. It looks an all manual operation and is in constant use,the doors are heavy and lots of linkage to wear. For some reason they fascinate me.

You can check the alternator quickly with an ohmmeter to see if it is setup for positive or negative ground. With the alternator output wire disconnected, connect the meter positive lead to the output terminal and negative lead to ground; if it is negative ground you will read OL or what your meter reads for an open circuit. If it reads a low number, it is positive ground. Hook it up the wrong way and the diodes are toast.
