The issue that keeps it A for me over S tier is size and weight, despite how good it is for performance. Great screen, great software overall, good haptics but I wouldn't want to carry it with me. I'm excited by AYN's Loki and Odin because they have enough performance at smaller sizes, and can't wait to see what handhelds with the i3-1215u or Mendocino can offer in terms of battery life and playability.

So you included the Playdate but forgot the Atari Lynx? The Lynx was the first back-lit color handheld coming out in 1989 and had ports of some of atari's 80's arcade hits like APB, Hard Drivin, Rampage, Roadblasters, and others
OMG thank you. This list is pretty horrible, it's like he's based it off the Number of Sales. If we measure Quality based on Quantity, it's akin to saying the best food in the world is McDonalds. I think a MORE interesting way to compare Handheld Consoles, is to quantify their hardware capabilities compared to their Home Consoles. The shorter the gap, the more graphics you're getting for your dollar. And if there's a huge gap you could argue you're getting ripped-off.

I graded them based on the match-up, and tried to use my best unbiased judgement. We need to PREFACE this with the fact that the processor alone does not make a handheld great, but it is one of the primary components of the experience. Nintendo/Bandai/SNK showed consistently low scores which indicates they release under-powered handhelds. Whilst GPD/Sony/Sega consistently released high scores that indicates they release over-powered handhelds. The likes of the 1992 PC EngineGT had the highest S score for being almost on-parity for Graphical Fidelity with the Home Consoles of its period. Contrast that with the 2000 SNK NeoGeo Color which scored the lowest D- score for being grossly under-powered compared to its peers, those Home Consoles had seen big technological leap.
@@ekinteko Clearly the list is based of the toys they've owned and how much nostalgia they have for them. "it's best because I had it and played it all the time"
I've owned the OG, the Virtual, the Advance, SP, 3DS and Switch. OG with Tetris and fresh batteries will always be my favorite. It made interstate car trips bearable for me, and unbearable for my sister, haha!
New 3DS line deserves an A, I'd say. It improved the original in performance and loading times, and it had eye tracking to keep the 3D effect by adjusting to your eyes' position.
Oh God the PSP Go is literally a brick unless you hack it. So officially speaking, it's an F but you could add some points for the implementation of the hardware, maybe? I wouldn't give it more than a D.
@@bloodbond3 I would give it a C tier because one whilst it’s a useless console if you don’t have games installed but if you mod it then there you go also the screen is unbelievably bright and the design was so good. The PSP Go just wasn’t to advantage of an all digital version of PSP so for all of that it pushes up to C tier in my opinion
I'd 100% put the Switch in the S tier. Not only does it have an incredible lineup of games, it's basically my dream device in how flexible it is. especially being able to do multiplayer on the go with just one console. 5 years later and I'm still loving it, and even though it is far less powerful than my PS5, I almost might like it more. The OLED model specifically is basically one of my favourite consoles of all-time. Also the Nintendo DS Lite, DSi XL, and especially 3DS were my childhood! Played so many Nintendo series, like Zelda, for the first time on my original 3DS!
The oled is clearly the best switch. And I love it.....but the joycons are trash....so it gets a A. But I will say these fools are clearly being stupid blinded by nostalgia. Ranking the new 3ds xl so low is just dumb.
@@packers12to80 I agree! The New 3DS XL was great and played so many amazing games! Love my red one. @Caden Churchill yeah I agree. These dudes made a horrible list....screamed about how amazing the gba was and praised it for it's backwards compatibility to Gameboy yet the 3ds played ds games lol. How do you miss the Lynx!!!! Atari lynx was the first color handheld. I bought it when it first came out for 299. Great handheld plus the lynx 2 was even better. Also the NEC Turbo Express was awesome.
No mention of Wonderswan or Neo Geo Pocket? Though I was a late owner of both, they have something to offer in 2022. The Neo Geo Pocket has probably the best feeling analog stick out of anything 1980s to 2010s (the recent Hall Effect stick modules might be a strong contender). As my personal favourite handhelds, I cannot rank them but I will group my "must always have" handhelds: GBA (an OG unmodded GBA and a IPS backlit GBA), DS Lite, 3DS (I have a new 3DS), PSP 3000 (CFW) and a Vita 1000 (I have an unmodded one and a CFW one), and a Switch Lite. That has some overlap for game capability, so its a bit overkill, but its my ideal set of handhelds to keep around to play anything portable. With Nintendo likely never going to regularly sell any old retro game, and opt to only have their older games on the Online Pass, having older hardware is one way to play the old games (or emulate on a Steam Deck, Ayaneo, etc).
I was living in a car as a teen for a few years and my buddy gave me a psp. That was my communication tool with the world. I would drive around neighborhoods looking for open wifi so I can surf the web and check email and what not. That thing has a special place in my heart.
As an owner of a sega Nomad, I am offended that it was put in F tier. I love my sega nomad to death. Nowadays you can get a better battery pack that has a lot more battery life than the 6 AA batteries that drained in 3 hours
Well yeah but you don't release a handheld console with the thought of "in 20 years batteries will be much better". Even normal AA batteries are better now and will probably last double on what 6 AA will have lasted then but that is not an excuse.
Yeah but the screen is tiny, it’s super bulky, back when it was relevant battery was ass and the screen got super blurry whenever there was a bunch of movement so stuff like Sonic wasn’t really playable Def not an F especially for the time but I’d say C or D
Kind of surprised you thought the Steamdeck was a bit outdated but considered the Switch OLED and Lite so good. Because those are practically ancient compared to the Steamdeck. Otherwise glad to see you guys were fair in it all. Though I also agree that the Playdate is a handheld console - it has a large amount of games, new user created games every day, and is available. And, yeah - Atari Lynx? ^_^
The Sega Game Gear also had a TV tuner. I thought that was so cool. You didn't have to have a big tube television but watch your favorite shows on a color handheld screen along with your games.
@@NoName-nb9qiI had the rechargeable battery accessory, as much as I loved my game gear, this battery was basically a soap on a rope style thing you plugged externally on the game gear. But if I was taking my game gear on the bus, I just had it in my backpack and wired it our to my game gear. I watched so much TV on my bus trip home, it was great. But not as smooth easy as just pulling out a cellphone in the today times.
The Nomad is way better than an F. The battery life wasn't that bad. About on par with a Game Gear and it played Genesis games flawlessly. Not to mention it has 6 buttons and you can hook it up to a TV and plug in a 2nd player controller so you can play with a friend on the go heh.
Yeah for a guy that had such a hardon for the gamegear I was also surprised by the F rating considering it had all the downfalls of the gamegear, but all the game library of the Sega Genesis which automatically puts it way ahead.
@@richardg5301 They also think the Game Gear was the first color handheld, and not being able to see Circle of the Moon anywhere darker than the surface of the sun is A tier. The entire list was made by puppydog fanwank.
I’m one of those “weird guys” like Austin. To me, the switch feels like it is primarily a docked console, and because of that I like my switch lite. Yes you can bring the switch on the go, but from using a friend’s switch to help prepare for raids in Pokémon, I can tell that the lite feels better handheld despite having a smaller screen….and I have bad vision and normally prefer a bigger screen.
The whole DS/3DS line got done dirty. Unique hardware that made for some games that you just cant replicate via emulation, a decent digital library once you get to the DSI and beyond, even better if you mod the things. Very good form factor with the clamshell design that made them so durable but always fit in your pocket. The New 3DS/2DS lines feel like Nintendo's most premium and well engineered handhelds imo. The pricing was reasonable by the time they were out, and the system actually had killer apps by then. 3D was fixed and now worked with head tracking. The new hardware made games like Xenoblade run which is a technical marvel. But most importantly some of the GOAT game libraries. The 3DS line has backwards compatability with all the DS games, and the DS lite gives you acess to all your gameboy Advance Games. The vita was technically an amazing system, but that game library was ass, and it was dissapointing to see Sony give up. Nintendo saved the 3DS, cutting the price, pumping out games everyone wanted, and continuing to refine the hardware with each iteration.
My opinion at the time about the DSi was the same as Austin's. I told my parents I specifically wanted a DS Lite. In retrospect, the DSi would've been a better choice by the simple fact of being an actual smart device.
as a kid my mom was going to buy me a ds lite right around the dsi was launched so i asked her for the new one instead. once i got it and learned i couldnt play game boy games i started to regret it a little bit
A for the SEGA Game Gear is spot on. I had one when I was in the British Army. Able to play Master system games with an adapter, you could also in the UK get a TV tuner adapter turning it into a portable TV. Perfect for those Training Exercises.😎😁
The thing is so many of these as they were when they first released would be at least sort of in the tiers we have here but with a little tinkering and all the cool upgrades you can add like better screens you can really make an ultimate version of an already great thing.
Did you guys miss the TurboExpress? It was a TurboGrafX portable. That thing was really interesting, it was the first portable console that had the same specs as the full sized system. It was a weird dual 8 bit chip that they called 16 bit but it wasn't really
Steam Deck is absolutely S tier. I was so blown away by it that I play it more sometimes than my PC (4090) and I gave my wife my Switch OLED because I just didn’t see myself touching that console ever again. The fact that I can play my steam/epic games AND emulate anything I want is unmatched.
Tbh i dont really like the steam deck for what its worth is. I got nintendo switch instead because of it being absolutely small that it can fit in my pocket (albeit a bit too big but can fit) and i take it anywhere for me to play with my sister or friends. And another big reason for me is Joycons since the fact you can detach them and stuff and play 2 player is kewl. Altough they missed out on the oppurtunity to make it VR (they did but wasn't good). But tbh i would agree that steam deck in terms of games and emulation capabilites but to be fair i would prefer the switch for its feeling and stuff. Sure i could emulate but as one person said "Optimization is king" - Linus. But hey i wouldn't deny a steamdeck! I think steamdeck is a fair competition for nintendo and stuff.

Completely ignoring the homebrew on the 3ds is a huge disservice to the console. The console can play nintendos entire handheld library pre switch and most of the home consoles before gamecube with a few wii/gamecube remakes done aswell. It is THE premier on the go emulation device
I agree with most of this, but I think one that was left out is a solid A or even S and that’s the new 3ds normal size. The 3D looked so much better especially if you got one with the ips screen and it played the full ds library minus a few games with specific peripherals, and did it comfortably with the best image.
How is the steam deck A when it can run on games and can be used as a laptop? I bought a steam deck to play mmos. And it works perfectly at max graphics and its only getting better. It would have cost me twice as much to get a laptop or pc in which both of those can’t be played on a plane or bus comfortably. I can play my mmo, with a monitor or the screen itself. I’m not even a huge steam deck guy who doubles the fps and emulates every possible thing, I just use it as a laptop with a controller integrated, mind blowing they put it in A I think Some side notes: It plays Xbox games PlayStation games Pc games Nintendo games with some hassle Game boy and old school games etc. it is a big game boy, a portable low powered ps and Xbox, a powerful switch and a pc. How can anything even come close?
Battery life on the Game Gear should put it down a notch. It's a great little console, but I never met anyone who used it on batteries, always had it plugged in.
Steam deck has to be an S with the emulation, easy repairability, being able to play PS4 games or PC exclusives and the overall consumer friendly practices
This is really good, thank's for the video, . The consoles that were around didn't have certain perform related job, but in saying that, there was no sequel(1) to relate efficiently of. The gameboy was popular anyway.
DS lite is criminally low. How is the sp so high? The 101 is only version that is worth playing and most on the market are 001's... I smell nostalgia stinking up this room.
The vita has to be the saddest handheld. It had so much potential. But Sony dropped the ball HARD. I remember playing my playstation games remotely without lugging around the full console.
The vita with updated specs would fit right in with the craze of handheld pcs and portable gaming devices on the market right now. Even back in the day it had some nice console ports like the switch does. Too bad the memory card held it back.
I can agree with most of your list but I would have to put the PSP at S tier. When it came out it was an amazing counsel The graphics were great The games were fun. And then you got homebrew which just opened up what you could do with the console. I literally carried my PSP around until I got my first good Android phone the Galaxy S3.
Definitely not s, they messed up the product to much and split features that should have been in all of them. The 1000 had to little ram and the 2000 and 3000 were the best but with them not having Bluetooth like the psp go it gimped them. You can hook the 2/3000 series up to a TV but you can't use a external controller. The psp go could be hooked up to a TV and use a ps3 six axis controller which is great but the no drive kinda sucks.
I feel like at the time it came out, gamegear was revolutionary and the oldest/closest handheld to the Switch today being as close to a portable home console as you could get if you intend to spend your life savings on batteries.
I agree with you that the 2ds was pretty good I still use it for my 3ds games I usually play with the screen all the way up so eliminating the hinge joint was a plus
Random facts : some of the nintendo games and watch from the 80's had dual screen and the original Zelda games and watch (not the 35th anniversary) had a dual screen setup very similar to the DS.
The oled display actually made me use my switch a lot more in handheld than docked. I owned the original since its release and almost always played in docked but now it´s the other way around. The display is just much better in any way
I guess a good way to get me to watch the whole video is constant hot takes. Nomad an F? Game Boy Color a B? You've got so many things underrated it's not even funny. We are spoiled way too much in 2022
Its kinda weird seeing the switch/lite/oled being ranked so highly. It just seems like its criticized so harshly these days and like no one is saying anything good about it. Kinda refreshing ngl. Also psp was robbed, it absolutely deserves s tier. much more than the gba sp imo lol.
I think PSP is between A and S tier. Great little device for it's time but it still came second. As about the Switch, i actually thing is kind of low and it should be S tier and this from a person that thinks is not that great as trying to be a console instead of a handheld. But since we are looking for handhelds then it deserves top status. It is really the best handheld device Nintendo ever made. As a console it may seem kind of weak but as a handheld it is the most powerful thing Nintendo ever released and i don't mean it just because it is newer tech and is obviously stronger but in comparison with it's time. I guess this happened because they tried to make a hybrid and they had to put the minimum power to excuse it as serving as a normal console as well. The DS or 3DS or the Game Boy's before them had no chance on playing any title that looked anything close to their big console brothers. But the Switch actually has many big titles etc that they have and on top of that many interested indie titles. If you also account the amazing support and success how can it not be high no matter what complains ones has. It has the games and it has the success and feels great to play. All other deficiencies aren't enough to take from that.
As a handheld, Switch OLED is S tier. The screen is so nice. As a home console, the Switch is D tier at best. The joycons are bad for standalone use. The performance is bad. I’d rather have a Switch Lite with a beautiful 7” OLED screen.
@@itsmoses7973 Personally i think it depends on your expirience, but i have a normal switch and tbh i would prefer the Switch OLED but i could also buy the steamdeck though i would also like to have seperate joycons!
PSP Go was my go to for the longest time, It was easily modded and could fit in your pocket without damaging the joystick. I would have ranked it B ~ A easily.
The GBA SP goes in S tear and someone is arguing against it? How? It even has a better screen than the original DS. Edit: After watching more of the video I have to say that this is kinda tuff decided where things should go. What I would have done would have been to rank every system that goes together and then ranked each of the groups together so for example all the 3DS and 2DS's would be ranked but then combined they would be ranked against say the Game boy rankings and the Game boy advance rankings and DS rankings and etc. Edit again. The micro had a headphone jack it was the SP that did not. However the micro was to small so F tear. Just like all the other weird version of systems (2ds and PSP go)
Yeah,no Atari Lynx because they would put that piece of crap in F tier because of the horrific battery life and crappy design which made the Game Boy so much better the only thing they did good was the graphics and backlight and they even decreased battery life
the switch is absolutely garbage compared to the 3DS - you can play so many more games on the 3DS than you can the Switch. On top of that, the Wii U had more titles that were worth your time.
Do you omit consoles like TurboExpress, WonderSwan, NeoGeo Pocket because neither of you owned them? I find it hard to believe you owned every single one of the ones on the board. You must have played other handheld consoles, right?
Personally I would say the Sega Game Gear is s tier for the fact that not only did have a color screen but you had the option of using the double a batteries or buying a giant battery that you can recharge.
The Vita to thus day is still my favorite console in general and is the last gaming device I've felt an attachment to. My Steam Deck is awesome but my excitement level isn't there... yet.
The vita was really slept on. It has a decent selection of games but for me it was my first "smart" device, which I used for years until i got my first smartphone. Matt was wrong and you missed one. the Atari lynx was the first handheld commercially released with a color screen and had two versions.
Was it a commercial success?
@@agenericaccount3935 unfortunately it was about as unsuccessful as the game gear

I still have my lynx, and i just commented that they missed it too, how dare they!
And if there's a huge gap you could argue you're getting ripped-off.

...i took some liberty with the years and the match-ups, but overall they're pretty well aligned and gives a good idea to the reader.
The moment he says the game gear was the first color handheld I was like: nope. Atari lynx.
@@ekinteko Clearly the list is based of the toys they've owned and how much nostalgia they have for them. "it's best because I had it and played it all the time"
14:25 - "I WOULD HAVE BEEN RICH..." -Austin Evans, successful RUclipsr 🤨
Honestly, if Nintendo were to finally fix drifting issue with the Joy-Con then that would fix pretty much all the issues I have with them. @Caden Churchill yeah I agree. These dudes made a horrible list....screamed about how amazing the gba was and praised it for it's backwards compatibility to Gameboy yet the 3ds played ds games lol. And the only thing keeping switch out of s was the joy cons for me.....which they praised lmao.....just bad biased takes that made 0 sense. But whatever I guess...their list lol

How do you miss the Lynx!!!! Atari lynx was the first color handheld. I bought it when it first came out for 299. Great handheld plus the lynx 2 was even better. Also the NEC Turbo Express was awesome.
I still have mine! I cant believe they didnt have it. This isnt a true handheld tier list without it
No mention of Wonderswan or Neo Geo Pocket?
With Nintendo likely never going to regularly sell any old retro game, and opt to only have their older games on the Online Pass, having older hardware is one way to play the old games (or emulate on a Steam Deck, Ayaneo, etc).
what if we were both Game Boys and we held each others Handhelds
I was living in a car as a teen for a few years and my buddy gave me a psp. That was my communication tool with the world. I would drive around neighborhoods looking for open wifi so I can surf the web and check email and what not. That thing has a special place in my heart.
I recall playing with the PSP on many road trips back in 2006. Actually got me promoted because my boss, Michael, knew how tech savvy I was.

Yeah but the screen is tiny, it’s super bulky, back when it was relevant battery was ass and the screen got super blurry whenever there was a bunch of movement so stuff like Sonic wasn’t really playable
Def not an F especially for the time but I’d say C or D
Where's the N-Gage where's the Wonderswan where's the Neo-Geo Pocket where's the TurboExpress
Atari Lynx, Neo Geo Pocket & Neo Geo Pocket Color, TurboExpress?
The Sega Game Gear also had a TV tuner. I thought that was so cool. You didn't have to have a big tube television but watch your favorite shows on a color handheld screen along with your games.
My main problem was having to keep asking my parents to buy me more AA batteries 🤣🤣🤣🤣

They also think the Game Gear was the first color handheld, and not being able to see Circle of the Moon anywhere darker than the surface of the sun is A tier.
The entire list was made by puppydog fanwank.
I bought a 3DS for my then spouse. It induced as many headaches as the spouse did. I have neither these days, nor any headaches.
I love this comment!
No TurboGrafx-16 portable or Atari Lynx included? Shame.
Also not impressed with those omissions. Add NeoGeo Pocket (Color) and WonderSwan to that list. At least they remembered the Micro this time.
They would’ve put them in ether D tier or F tier
What about the Atari Lynx, Turbografx Express, & Neo Geo Pocket Color?
Or, Wonderswan...

Completely ignoring the homebrew on the 3ds is a huge disservice to the console. The console can play nintendos entire handheld library pre switch and most of the home consoles before gamecube with a few wii/gamecube remakes done aswell. It is THE premier on the go emulation device
That, and the Vita
@@d4nyll Vita has so many homebrew projects that it's dumb to not consider it
Any handheld can be s tier with the right mods
I’m not even a huge steam deck guy who doubles the fps and emulates every possible thing, I just use it as a laptop with a controller integrated, mind blowing they put it in A I think
Some side notes:
It plays Xbox games
PlayStation games
Pc games
Nintendo games with some hassle
Game boy and old school games etc.
it is a big game boy, a portable low powered ps and Xbox, a powerful switch and a pc.
How can anything even come close?
For me, I have massive hands and all of the portable consoles that you knocked for being clunky or too big, I found felt the best in my hands.
Matt, king of the intro!!
Not gonna lie, the way Matt hollered at the start of the video(OOO), he'd make a killer metal singer.
Battery life on the Game Gear should put it down a notch. It's a great little console, but I never met anyone who used it on batteries, always had it plugged in.
Get rechargeable AA's
@@jimmymyers Convincing your parents to get rechargable batteries and a charger back then was pretty tricky. And the batteries weren't very good.
The whole DS line is way too low. No DS family member in A or S despite being the best selling handheld ever by far is absurd 😐
Steam deck has to be an S with the emulation, easy repairability, being able to play PS4 games or PC exclusives and the overall consumer friendly practices
Definitely do more of these ! 💪
This is really good, thank's for the video,
. The consoles that were around didn't have certain perform related job, but in saying that, there was no sequel(1) to relate efficiently of. The gameboy was popular anyway.
Original game boy does not deserve s tier, if this was game boy light however, i would not be suprised
Matt should be yelling like that more often 😂😂😂 my daughter loved it!
@@billy-waynejeffcoat4828 But the community literally improved it soo much even though i have a switch, it is cool to see the community fixing the psp

I agree with you that the 2ds was pretty good I still use it for my 3ds games
I usually play with the screen all the way up so eliminating the hinge joint was a plus

Keep it up boyz
I would have ranked it B ~ A easily.
it was said that Matt reached a new level of super saiyan no entity ever reached.
I only had two handhelds. Nintendo DS and I pretty much only played Scribblenauts, and PSP and I pretty much only played Hotshots Golf.
The 2ds xl should be a high B or low A, a great system once you homebrew it
even without homebrew, it is great. it should be higher than the gamegear.
Just like all the other weird version of systems (2ds and PSP go)
The game boy advance is still near and dear to me, it officially started my love for handheld systems.
No Atari Lynx?
Yeah,no Atari Lynx because they would put that piece of crap in F tier because of the horrific battery life and crappy design which made the Game Boy so much better the only thing they did good was the graphics and backlight and they even decreased battery life
the switch is absolutely garbage compared to the 3DS - you can play so many more games on the 3DS than you can the Switch. On top of that, the Wii U had more titles that were worth your time.
I think the switch lite is probably B tier too, the switch oled completely surpasses the switch and switch lite.
This review is good other than missing quite a few other handhelds like the Atari Lynx, Neo Geo pocket and the wonder swan.
Awesome video. Where's the Lynx or Neo Geo Pocket/Color? Long live the Game Gear!!!!!

The vita was really slept on. It has a decent selection of games but for me it was my first "smart" device, which I used for years until i got my first smartphone.
