    In today's video, Shaun Webb and Mike Granato show you the exact downswing sequence you need for more distance and consistency. Many golfers start their downswings on the wrong foot (literally). That not only robs you of speed but makes moving the club properly nearly impossible. Instead, incorporate this downswing sequence into your swing and enjoy the results.

    I never knew the re-centering and weight shift back to the left side happened in the back swing until I watched this video. I worked on this extensively at home and took it to the range today. It was a game changing movement that created consistent ball striking I’ve never really had before. Thank you so much.

    I like that this channel isn't all about drills. The 3D golfer in slow motion is really helpful to see what the body should be doing and in the end I find it more helpful (at least as far as youtube goes) than drills that may or may not be the right fix for me. Drills help, but there are so many and knowing the right ones to take the driving range can be difficult, and I'd bet most are watching several different instructors on youtube, so that complicates matters more.

      Totally agree with you mate. Seeing a video like this and others on this channel with the 3D model swings of successful pros and explaining it is better than watching lots of random golf instruction videos on RUclips. Sometimes our brains need to see the proof to understand - learn the philosophy of a successful swing before we physically rehearse and practice.

    I can’t tell you how happy I am that I found your pro vs am series. I’ve played golf for nearly 20 years and have been so frustrated with my swing for the last 5 years or so. I was at the range today and finally felt exactly what you’re talking about in this video. Felt amazing. I feel like I found my swing with this lesson today.

    This channel is by far the best at utilizing technology to communicate feel. Most others either use tech to merely show positions, or show disdain for tech entirely, and try to communicate feel with vague language. AMG is in a class by itself.

    This is rreally about a video I saw yesterday about set up and keeping your hip joint overs your ankle. I/m 75 and suffering ffrom old man syndrome of lack of mobility. That being said I coupled the address position with a pause at the top and the thought of turning my chest and dropping my hands. OMG, what a difference and the others in my ggroup definatly noticed and commented. At least a 20 yard difference and in the middle. Thank you!

    The gears guy said it all and never opened his mouth. To separate the back and down just call it swing... although the feelings are distinctly different. We could of course start our swing like the baseball player club on shoulder or close to. The ball isn’t moving, smash away! I've literally watched thousands of golf videos from the top teachers in golf on You Tube and none of them ever talk about the weight shift back to the ball happening before the backswing is complete. They all talk about that it is the first part of the downswing and crucial for good ball striking. As you so clearly stated, by then it is too late! You are dead in the water! It happens in the backswing, not the downswing. This is very easy to see in a slow motion shot of Ben Hogan's swing. Thank you for focusing this well instructed video on this key aspect of forward weight shift. That being, when it is supposed to happen! Awesome stuff!

    Great vid as ever. I think it’s something to do with having a stationary target which makes us think we need to keep everything as still as possible. Added to that nobody wants to miss the ball in practice, so even on the range we’re not practicing more dynamic actions for fear of looking stupid. If you were swinging at a baseball you’d accept you’ll miss some and swing freer.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf

    Hi guys this is some phenomenal instruction. I have seen some video of Rory at the players recently. Interestingly it looks as though his weight is shifting prior to the club moving at all in the back swing, so you will need to change your perimeters for shifting weight in future videos given that he won!! Many 🙏

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад

      Haha he's actually a great example of why that shift should happen early (Stenson too). We see that same shift in ams with the only difference being it happens around the top of the swing. Rory is already back to centered by that point.

    You've done a video addressing this before and I like them all. It seems to me, thanks to you guys, that the swing boils down to the basic motion described in this video then getting the arms, hands and club into a position to produce the desired ball flight. Again, it boils down to the two ends; the feet and the hands. It's really comforting to know that this motion you're describing here is it...that's the body motion all the best players in the world make and have made throughout golf history. You really see this in Ben Hogan's swing. The motion you describe is there...the angle of his right leg at the top of the swing makes it clear he's positioning himself to be in front of the ball at impact. His arms and hands get the club in a position to hit the ball where he wanted it to go. One swing but two separate considerations. One is relatively constant player to player and the other depends upon the natural, albeit somewhat undesirable, swing fault producing a ball flight that's other than intended. Hogan's head moved down and left coming into the ball..he was getting in front of it to prevent the hook then rolled the back of the left wrist through the ball to prevent a push due to the cupped left wrist at the top of the swing. A combo of compensations that worked amazingly well. My fault is thinking that an uncompensated swing is actually possible aside from the theory of it LOL! Thanks for the vids guys..I've been at this a long time and you still teach me something every video. Thank you.

    OMG I just tried this move on Sunday, wow what difference, first time I broke 90 for years! I got it wrong a few times (I found myself sliding forward in the backswing and a bit reverse pivoting) but when I got the timing right I felt the contact was much more solid than before.
    I never really got the hip "bump" transition that some instructional videos mention at the start of the downswing (it just makes me swing outside the the plane)
    great video guys, thanks a lot

    This move back to the target with the weight before (and sometimes well before) the top of the back swing is counter intuitive to sequence so I developed a little drill I called 'spreading the butter' which gives you a great feeling for the move. You don't need a club, just get in posture but stretch your right hand out in front of you then start making lateral movements with your arm. Imagine you are spreading butter on a window in front of you with the back of your hand going right and the palm going left. Then start to synchronise lateral hip motion, first in the same directions as your arm then do them in opposite directions. This gives a great feeling of what it should feel like in the swing.

    Thanks so much for reminding me of this essential move! Lately, I’ve been struggling with the weight shift, which was happening after I reached the top of the swing. Tough to time it perfectly from there. Sometimes I would pull it off and all was fine, but often the shift wouldn’t happen which would result in a flat-footed swing. Ugly! After watching this video, I realized I used to shift on the upswing, but somehow that move was lost in one of our winter layoffs. Can’t wait to get back on track.

    Here's my 2-bobs worth. Its about sequencing. The sequence does not change. What triggers the downward swing also depends on body type. Guys/gals with stronger upper or lower body will trigger the downswing differently. But however they do it - the sequencing has to be in sync to deliver the club face to the ball square
    There are always exception to the rule where someone simply has so much athletic abilities that their initial sequence might be out but they usually get the club face square.

    The 3D model looks like JR himself! The head dipping is happening because it sits in the middle of the he tilting of the hips and shoulders. The dipping of the head will follow on both ends of the swing according to hip and shoulder tilts on either end. Think of how the the bars of someone swinging on the uneven bars dips in gynastics everytime the gymnast swings on them. To maximize this, have more flexed lead wrist with a steep shoulder turn i.e., Dustin Johnson., and the body will be more inclined to work downward therefore creating a bigger dip of the head in transition of the downing... cheers.

    I disagree with what the initial lateral movement is. It’s not a shift IMO.
    It’s a stretch of the left leg externally with the lead pelvis low, which will move you laterally a little bit. Not any kind of push off the back foot or bumping of the hips: it sure does look like it.
    Then all you do is get he right elbow externally in front of your body a little with some separation of the upper and lower body.
    All of a sudden you’re shallowed out like crazy as long you’re not pulling on the handle.
    Then it’s just a rotation to impact and not an arm swing.
    Gets me super open at impact!
    👌🏻

      Texas Golfer how much lateral movement of the body would you like to see from top of backswing to impact?

    • @ShallowedOutGolf
      @ShallowedOutGolf 5 лет назад

      Shaun Webb Golf I suppose it depends on whether you’re centered or if you come off the ball in the backswing.
      But definitely some lateral movement while the right arm starts going external.

    • @ShaunWebbGolf
      @ShaunWebbGolf 5 лет назад

      Texas Golfer how much from “zero” let’s say. ? Curious to hear your thoughts.

    • @ShallowedOutGolf
      @ShallowedOutGolf 5 лет назад

      Shaun Webb Golf Not sure the number but quite a bit. It feels like a fall laterally to me, not a Drive off the back foot. I just let the stretch and small external movement of the left leg to initiate the fall, it doesn’t take much.

    • @ShaunWebbGolf
      @ShaunWebbGolf 5 лет назад

      Texas Golfer wait so I’m confused. You say you disagree that there is no shift, but there is “quite a bit “ of lateral movement? Just trying to understand what you’re saying. Also, how long have you been teaching golf? Always nice to have discussions with fellow instructors.

    I like these videos a lot. I am trying to not let my shoulders fly out when making the first move. This will be done with some extra flexibility drills and reps at the range. Do you have any drills good for not letting shoulder spin out.

    Another great video. When the torso is raising and the head is lowering through impact, is that because the butt is moving away from the ball i.e. anti-goat humping?

    Love the channel and all the tutorials guys. Keep up the great work.
    My problem is on my transition and downswing with driver I have a tendency for my arms to extend away from my body which is causing heel shots. My miss has been hooks in the past so I was taught to try and hit closer to the heel to promote delay in face closure. Not sure if that was correct but it did help to prevent hooks but now I find my ball contact is always to the heel on driver and so I find I line up the ball with the toe of the driver.
    I’m not sure if this prob has to do w my transition or turn at impact.
    This doesn’t seem to happen with my irons.
    I know that there are lots of things to consider and the prob may not have 1 solution but any ideas why this could be happening.
    Thanks guys

    As always great video and great discussion regarding what's " actually" happening in the swing. I know you guys have some special equipment and software to assist you in your analysis, do you have any way of demonstrating, measuring, or any insight on some subtleties of grip, palm or finger pressure amongst the pros vs ametuers?.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад

      Not really, unfortunately. We have some "guesses" but nothing that can actually be measured. I did see something posted months back about an instrumented grip from a university lab, but that seems quite a ways off to become something practical to use in lessons.

    I'm working on shifting my centre of gravity to the left early in the downswing at the moment. But I'm not sure if I should be rotating hard simultaneously or if it's more of a shift then turn move? Could be a good separate video..

    Love this video! It really helped me to slow down, visualize and practice the movements with and without a club in my hands. I will apply all of this video to my swing. Question - How much of a golfer's power comes from physical strength (abdominal, chest, arms, legs) to generate club head speed? Do you have any videos on increasing club head speed?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад

      It's the sum of all the of sources the golfer has available to them. The trick is understanding which ones are produce more than the others and yield the highest ROI so to speak. Here's our latest video just on the subject of speed: freedrivedistance.com/

    I’ve heard some instructors describe this dipping motion as the “trampoline” effect. Apparently it’s meant to build momentum. Thoughts??

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад

      There's VERY little momentum from the dip. Just using the pro in this video for example, his dip from the top is only .17" with the ribcage and doesn't have any dip with his hips. The momentum comes from the lift/rising of the body, not the dipping.

    You mentioned in this video and have shown a Pro in another video getting weight shift when club parallel on backswing. Since weight shift is such a major issue with us amateurs, why not start with a reverse K at set up by slight bumping hip over left knee, ankle and then start backswing. I understand it may limit the back turn but may gain on consistency, No?

  • @wgb8210
    @wgb8210 5 лет назад +1

    Fantastic video as always. While playing, I try to squeeze everything you talked about here into three swings thoughts: 1) keep the spine erect throughout the swing; while starting the downswing by 2) rotating the hips; and 3) dropping primarily the left shoulder but also the right shoulder. These swing thoughts have never failed me, but if something goes wrong with another part of my swing that requires some attention, I often feel like an amateur juggler who can pretty comfortably juggle three balls but starts dropping some of the balls when a fourth ball is thrown to him. Have you guys ever done any videos on the best techniques for grooving certain moves into your swing so that while out on the course the juggling can be kept to a manageable minimum of preferably two or three balls but ideally zero?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад +1

      Love this question! Trying to execute 3 swing thoughts is a very tall task to ask of yourself... especially while out playing. Try instead to get really good at one of those at a time. That'll narrow you focus while placing more of the load on your athleticism (always more reliable than your thinking). You can take turns alternating between those thoughts for days at a time, but really try to limit the effort to one. With time, they will become less and less of a conscious thought for executing the motions. No one is going to be very good at keeping all the balls in the air when you start with 3 and get a 4th one thrown in. The idea is not to be a juggler😉

      @wgb8210 5 лет назад

      Athletic Motion Golf Thank you, I knew serious golfers would go to the range often with a single purpose or a single swing thought they wanted to ingrain in their swings, but I never took this advice because I was always working on so many things at once. But that is now going to change. Thank you!

    • @wgb8210
      @wgb8210 5 лет назад

      Athletic Motion Golf I have now taken this game to the next level (very close to playing par golf) because I am working on one move at a time (mostly). Ingraining certain moves into my swing, one move at a time, is taking most of the juggling out of my game, and is freeing up my mind, thus enabling me to manage the course better and swing with more athleticism. Not having to remind myself whenever I am in my set up to start the downswing by rotating my hips, keeping my spine vertical, dropping my left shoulder, and extending my right wrist, as well as a few other thoughts has also made playing much more pleasurable and much less mentally exhausting. Learning about the biomechanics of the golf swing is of course important, but I now realize that golf is a much better game when your body knows what to do rather than you having to constantly remind your body about certain moves on nearly every swing. Thank you!

    Great video, nice change of scenery from previous. Here is an unrelated thought. What I really enjoy about your videos is that they give me a much better understanding of how the different parts move relative to each other. Does GEARS have the potential to take that to the extreme? Can the "camera" be fixed to the torso so that the arm/wrist movement relative to it be seen? Imagine a real world camera rig strapped to your torso, with view that remains centered on the sternum as you turn back and through.

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 лет назад

      No, it can't do that but what a great idea!!! So more from the golfer's (or body segments) POV than from the typical viewer's POV? Love it!

    • @morini05
      @morini05 5 лет назад

      Yes, either the golfers point of view, or the "selfie sticks" point of view. From the face on view (for example) there is a bit of an optical illusion that the arms move away to the right side of the body. By switching to the down the line view halfway through the backswing, I can work out the movement, but it would be enlightening to see it from a straight on sternum fixed point of view. There are probably a few other views that would be interesting such as torso movement relative to pelvis.
