  • I modified a parametric box from Thingiverse so I could print in 2 colors on my Flasforge Creator Pro. I used OpenSCAD to do the modifications, and Simplify3D to slice everything. The boxes turned out incredible!

    Quick tip for you Joel. If you double click on an object in Simplify3D it will bring up a menu with numbers for you to adjust position, scale, and rotation. Much easier to align things.

    I got a hulk model from thingiverse, used the laso in meshmixer to 'cut' the legs and torso off so i could do him in green and pants in blue. As for joining, i just printed the two models overlaying, green on right blue on left tool heads, and then let the slicer sort it out.
    Print came out perfect and as strong as if it had been a single part.

    it is called a finger joint. Dovetail is different shape. This finger joint is really strong because the layers are a few dozen microns off of each other(unlike wood where you need more space to slide pieces together). They also are also milted together in some parts most likely.

  • @AndrewHelgeCox
    @AndrewHelgeCox 8 лет назад

    More like this please. Techniques, tools. You could go deeper with OpenSCAD and screencast for example. Could try a number of joining designs and strength test them to failure. Better than just unboxing another printer or printing something massive.

      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад

      +Andrew Cox YES! I love doing these sorts of videos. I still need to do unboxing and massive print videos because those are quite popular on the channel. However, I'm going to prioritize technical videos higher and try to get more of them out. That's the goal!

    I don't know if you can do this in S3D. In Marlin I enter object position manually and since you're using single object that was split in halves, entering the same numbers for both halves would result in them being perfectly aligned.

    Cool tongue and grove joint. Maybe you could print and impossible dovetail joint ie a box made from two pieces but joint by dovetails on each side such that you could never put it together except by 3D printing it. If you made the space between the models just right the parts could be separated so they would wiggle and appear to have been assemble. It would be cool in two colours as we'll to heigh light the different parts.

    You can use edit to align two objects for dual extrusion is step of doing the sketchy pick and place technique. Simplify has a tutorial going over how.

  • @the-xack
    @the-xack 8 лет назад +1

    Just a hint: There is a dual extrusion assistent in Simplify3d under extras. That makes life much easyer ;) (and more precise prints)

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад

      +The Xack Hey! Oh, I know about that thing, it's SO cool. Unfortunately, for this, the Dual Extrusion assistant doesn't work. The dual extrusion assistant is assuming to the two parts to be printed are going to be on top of one another. These were side by side.

    • @the-xack
      @the-xack 8 лет назад

      +3D Printing Nerd Hm... I think it uses the Origin of the model for positioning on dual extrusion, maybe somethings wrong with that... could you upload the files? I'm curious what could be the reason ;) one more thing (you probably know that but maybe it helps someone reading this comment): if you double click the object in the simplify3D build space you can move it by editing the x,y,z coordinates. BTW Sub ;)

    If you are somehow able to export it from OpenSCAD where the models are together in 1 STL file or have geometry indicating that they are together then you don't need to line them up. I printed a butterfly -- actually in 4 colors, I had the butterfly body with holes for where the colored dots in the wings were, then the dots had positions so that they line up with the holes. Then if you tell S3D not to move your models on insert and import all the models together, then you get them orientated together. Then you can group them and position them on the bed -- I did that with the butterfly body, the dots, and then using your trick of color layering, I added the outline and some more detail in 2 more colors. Really fun print -- time consuming as I had to setup 2 colors first then again with 2 more colors. I'm surprised you could print without the ooze shield, I get a lot of color bleed, maybe need more retraction on extruder change.

    Hey! I bought that Simplify3D program, because it is so much lauded. I think a great program, but there are small flaws.
    What should not be 150 € in the program.
    On the exterior dimensions and in recitals holes do not stay down in dimensions.
    And for that defect, is not able to correct the settings. I do not think that is due to my printer.
    Of that there is no harm if I printed out only decorative objects. In fact, I printed out the mechanical parts, so there is at least to me of great importance.
    Thank you for outstanding videos !! HighFive!!

    That was a nice video. As I have a little experience with dual extruders, might I add some suggestions? It makes for better (harder) parts if you insert one material part into the other a little more - say, 0.4mm or 0.8mm inside. This way it won't bulge too much and the fused materials will stick with much more force. This is specially important for articulated parts (e.g one part rigid material, other part flexible material). This can be done in the slicer as you did, but is more robust if done in the model and leads to more exact parts.
    Also, I noticed that you had to manually align the different materials (let's not say just "colors" - dual extruders are sooo more capable than that!). Is this really necessary? When you design the parts in openscad, it automatically export them to STL using proper coordinates. I understand that as you loaded them as STLs simplify3d would never guess they are part of the same object, but you can get the STLs and join then in an AMF file (which is a format accepted in most slicers for double extrusion) and this problem would never ensue. One way to join the two STL files, since they will be under the proper coordinates, is installing slic3r - which I highly recommend as an alternative, since I am concerned that the 3d printing ecosystem is becoming increasingly "monocultural" due to simplify3d - and use its command-line utility stl-to-amf to convert your stl files to AMF, or doing it inside its interface ( manual.slic3r.org/expert-mode/multiple-extruders ).
    Also, if one is interested in dual-extrusion models, I highly recommend this 3ders article: www.3ders.org/articles/20160310-top-30-best-dual-extruder-multicolor-3d-prints.html

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 лет назад

      +Malcolm Hunter I had to the that because the models would just be printing next to each other, and the horizontal adherence at the point would be almost nonexistent.

    • @MrDorkLard
