And THIS is why I always error check models I download from the web ;) Great tips!
Love that command to separate multiple parts that are in one file. Nice explanation on the command!
You always have the best tips man. My simplify 3d knowledge is growing fast because of you.
Great video. Your little tips and tricks about S3D are very quickly persuading me to invest in it!
Great tip and great model to print Joel, thanks !!!
Thanks Joel, great tip I bought S3D soon after buying my first 3D printer and it was the best upgrade I have subsequently used it on other machines I have built. I downloaded and printed this model on a newly built delta machine I am currently screwing around with. Dunno what to do with the model but it looks cool.
Thanks for a great education video! Ive learned 2 new things about simplify3d, which i have a great deal of use for! Thanks again Joel!
Love your videos, But will you share or post the corrected .STL file somewhere? Like the facebook group?
Awesome! I did not know you could do this with Simplify3D. And this is why I stared watching you months ago, good solid info. :) [Digital Learning High Five]
I love that shirt! I imagine your closet as a huge walk-in room filled with epic t-shirts. sorta like the bat cave but just t-shirts.
+CJ Printing Um... Sort of :)
Thanks Joel , great tip.
Rock. Paper. Scissors. Lizard. Spock. You had me at Giant Rocket Plane!!!!
Thanks for sharing...
I'm having tremendous problems with my Prusa I3 MK3 with the filament not sticking to the build plate. If I use nothing, it sticks very little or not at all - and I end up with the filament wrapped around the nozzle. I'm currently using Kapton tape, which seems to work pretty well, except for on any model taller than about an inch. I've also used that painter's blue tape - but it seems to sort of "melt" during the print, and it's really hard to get the piece off the build plate.
Is there any other kind of substance / material that I could use to aid in adhesion?
Hi Joel, I came across this video about connected surfaces and used it in another way to save a very cool dragon model. The model is beautifully done, but was put together in sections with overlap. By having S3D separated the connected surfaces, grouping them, and then adding the process, it made it a complete model. Null spaces in the center of the wing/body connected area and the head/neck connected are now slice properly? or infill properly. I have been printing for a 5 days, but watching your channel mostly has shown me enough to know there is almost always a way to fix something and as Thomas Edison said, "genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." I just used some of your work in figuring out settings and identifying where the defect was (the hole) that was causing the gap. Do you have other tips on the software side for fixing models? I have seen your videos on trouble shooting the hardware.
How did you get your logo in SF3D?
Great video Joel ✋🏼
+Anizzy Thank you!
Great video. However, what happens if I click the SCS yet nothing happens?
Ive been using free software for printing for over a year now. It has been a nightmare so I havent done a lot. I recently bought Simplify 3D and it instantly got easy and fun. I recommend it!
Joel, do you use a 3D scanner at all? to make models of real world items? High five for the good work on these videos!
What happens with that last remaining dot at the top of the engine? Where does it connect to and does it affect the continuous spiral? Is there a way to remove it in the model (like delete or erase)?
You always have such amazing background music;) #highfive
Sweet - a quick way to avoid using the MS Model Repair Service website on models with slight issues that I only want to print a single time! (...and that can be fixed this way, of course.) Thanks for showing me this gem of a tool, Joel!
Virtual high 5 bro! Learned something new today plus broke my diet by raiding the pantry for beef jerky!
Interesting video, and an absolutely awesome #highfive inspiring model/print you had there
holy cannolis batman! that filament looks awesome! need me a spool of that
+ToastedBagelBaconJam it's neat stuff. if you can get your hands on it, you'll love it
i think i found it!
www.proto-pasta.com/products/high-temp-pla-v2-0
definately the next spool i get
hi, I had a serious problem, I created support in meshmixer like separate models, I import model and support (model) in simplify3d but where I started to print I don't see nothing like slicing. I tried model separated and works, I tried to separate connected surface, but problem still remains. Can you help me? Please I am going crazy
All I want to do is print 3d buildings. I have these blue ticks on my 3d model in Simplify3d that I have no clue why they are there or what I did to make them appear. Ugh, I am not Simplify3d skilled at all. Any suggestions before I do something else stupid with this program?
If you use 'RocketPlanefor2xScalup' It doesn't have those blobs mate. But excellent to see this tip. I could come in very handy. Thanks ↨5
Now i know how you get sutch good quality prints! SUUUUPER slow! I used to print on 1900mms Now on 800 and 200 .. Amazing
you keep teasing us with that gmax! need a review!
+ms3bani It's coming! I'm being shipped the final stuffs needed to complete my review. I'm serious. It's close!
#highfive nice vid :-)
If you run the command a second time would it find the last bits ?
+Lee Dove Um... Maybe? I didn't think to try that.
thanks Joel !
Good lesson on a powerful feature. A+ Hi5
Hey Joel,
I've always been curious what software you prefer to do desktop captures like in this video?
+Tim Hamerly I use Quicktime on the Mac! If you load Quicktime, under FIle is an option for New Screen Recording.
+3D Printing Nerd Awesome Joel! Thanks much. I assume you have the Pro version to do that?
+Tim Hamerly No! Standard Quicktime!
so could you make one of them old school water rockets ?
+Chi Sty OOHHH maybe! I'll have to look into that
awesome tip Joel. I love Simplify3D. Lets get more tips! #highfive
It's a problem in the source mesh for shure. If you look at it directly on thingiverse (with the model-view) you can position your camera inside the rocket-drives and see that column in the center already. I then tryed to import the STL into my CAD-tool and it never managed to load it in correctly (and I had loaded some pretty badly broken and huge meshes in that same software before without any problems). So something is really terribly wrong with the mesh.
+ExtraBase Oh wow, bad mesh? Crazy. I'm happy mine was able to print at all, then!
i have one im trying down ill try to post pics when its done thanks for all the info #highfive !
thx dude. I opened an stl tonight,, from a folder, and noticed a weird square in the base. Used this tip,, and it was the previous object that I had printed,, but forgot to "remove" it before closing S3D. #highfive
Flash Print didn't find any glitches in the base, Can you do a 2 perimeter vase mode in S3D?
+Mickice No, I don't believe so.
I had overhang issues on the bottom of the top wings, printing a 13cm model only took 40minutes in Vase mode.
Hi Joel, As always I really enjoy your vids. I was aware of this feature but never have I printed anything in vase/spiral mode. I'm going to give it a whirl tonight. I noticed you flipped your model by doing a X rotation -90. Not sure if you are aware of CTRL-L? You hit CTRL-L and click the surface you want to place on the bed. Works quick. Anyhoo. #HighFive
+Army of Colors HOLY COW I did not know that! Thank you! #ReturnFive
Yay, something technical! :)
+Andrew Cox Yes! I try to get technical things in when I can. Shoot. I need more time. Can you find me the model for more time so I can print it? :)
+3D Printing Nerd As long as you print it BIG!
For everyone else not using Simplify3D, most other slicers also have this ability. It'll usually be called Split or Separate Shells, but they function the same. If your slicer doesn't have that ability, Meshmixer also has a separate shells feature you can use!
+Hoffman Engineering Hey, thanks for the tip! I did this in Simplify3D because that's just the slicer I use, and I'm very glad you were able to get some good info out for everyone else that doesn't use it. Right on! #highfive
90th and Aurora checking in. FFCX user here. Thanks neighbor for the great S3D tip.
+Robert Seaton Hey neighbor!
Can't you repair that portion of the model or send it into Sketch-up basic and remove the problem? I didn't know that feature was available in Simplify 3D I've been just reworking issues in Sketch-up basic if I can.
+Paul Muad'Dib Um, maybe? I haven't used Sketch-up yet so I'm not sure.
What do you do with all of these MASSIVE prints :-) Must say I am growing to have GMAX envy :-P
+DIY3DTECH.com I put them on a shelf, or give them to friends!
+3D Printing Nerd if you are willing to send me one of those i will convert into an actual model rocket that flies and post pictures and video. i just printed the very same model last night but only 5 inches tall :-) i love spiral mode. it results in crazy thin light models but also incredibly strong models!
+Nerys in fact you can print it even larger. scale to 400 or 450 % and print the nose as a seperate part :-)
Rub it in even more ;-)
Nicely done! Did you get a letter from me in the mail?
I remember Joel putting up a video about a transparent filament, and putting the finished part into some kind of device that sprayed it with a mist of some kind. Can anyone point me to that video?
Look up the Polysher
Thanks!!
Great video - the Polysher is precisely what I was looking for.
With do think about XYZ Printers and you know its has a Laser to go with now
+ArtofModeling I have a box in my entry way with an XYZ DaVinci Pro in it. That'll be my first experience with an XYZ printer. Just need to get it unboxed. It doesn't come with the laser, though, you can buy is separately.
I was going to buy the Da Vinci Jr. but the cost for the Pro IS so GOOD now I have a DaVinci Pro for my first 3D PRINTER
This is great but there's so many ways to fix a problem like this, you should really try out Meshmixer, for small fixes it's fast and a 5 year old can handle it. Just hit the make solid button and it gets rid of any inner shells or non manifold edges. Give it a go, I think you would like it.
+Dániel Puskás Oh, there are a TON of ways to skin this cat! I know of Meshmixer and what it can do, it's awesome! I just figured this out in Simplify3D so I thought I would share. #highfive
There's something satisfying about hearing an American say "millimeters".
+Tim Lennard Hahahhaha!
Sweet Video! #HighFive
i always play with my printed models flys around going pewpewpew
At first I was wondering what kind of demonically distorted quiet background music you were playing
Jeez...
(In case someone is as daft as I am, it was the sound of a 3d printer in the background...)
+LeiserGeist Hahahahah. yes it was :)
Joel, high five :)
+VLAHECO Return Five!
Hey Joel...did you hear that Solidoodle apparrently announced yesterday that they are shutting their doors? Looks like another 3d printing company shutting down...the phenomenon is starting to look more and more like the dot com bust...more and more 3d printing companies are going under but as of right now there seem to be new companies coming into existence as fast as old ones are going under. Do you think that the world is ready for 3d printing? What do you think about the fate of 3d printing...my suspicion is that 2 or 3 3d printing companies will rise to the top and dominate which has already pretty much happened. Im curious about your take on this new developement.
+Richard Matt Hey, Richard! I addressed this question in my latest video at the Q&A after unboxing the Zortrax. I don't have the time to type the words right now, but, I did have opinions, and I talked about it. Also coined the hashtag #Solidoodoo
I could hear a printer in the background
+Max Shankland Yes, it was printing! I showed a thumbnail of it printing towards the end of the video
You could Probably run the model through : netfabb.azurewebsites.net/ and it will fix the problem.
+Darathh I thought about that after the fact, and, I'm not sure if Netfabb online would have caught it. I don't think it's errors int he geometry. Maybe, though?
Wow, this model is just lousy. I opened it up in blender to explore it and, yeah, it's just got bad geometry all over it.
I'm impressed with this technique to fix it, but making good, clean models should be #1. Standards, people.
+Joe's 3D Workbench Agreed. Good, clean models are the best. Thanks for looking into this!
That is not a great feature that is a shit feature. Other slicers print them allright out of the box without doing all that shit. Simplify3d prints like shit.
