Please keep showing training for separation anxiety. There are so many going through this.

Separation anxiety is no joke, I rescued a 3yr old Shepherd husky mix. His separation anxiety was really bad, I felt prisoned in my own home because he never felt safe or comfortable being alone. Even if I was in the next room (for crate training or cleaning the house) he would then bite doors and try to break them down to get to me along with whining, howling, and barking. He even knows how to open doors and unlock doors/crates. It was like living with a velociraptor. Though over time with training/conditioning he finally sees his crate as a safe space to be in when we have to leave the house. He even puts himself in the crate when he is tired over the other dog beds. It took a few months but im glad we didn't give up on him he is a wonderful part of our family.

I just took in a 17 week old English Cocker Spaniel pup that spent all of her life in a shed. It's been five days now and thanks to your work, we had the best time. She might be tiny, she was the runt of the litter, but she's brave and sweet. She picks up really fast and she even teaches me about how she works. She is the single best decision I made in my life. Thank you

This brings me back to last fall when I got my Whippet puppy. She cried so hard if I took as much as a step away from her that I was at one point convinced I'd never be able to leave her home alone.
Now she runs into the crate if she sees me with her Kong and sleeps quietly while waiting for us to get back.

I am certainly no expert by any means, but when we were crate training the game-changer was actually covering the crate with a blanket. Our dog much preferred it feeling "den-like" to being stuck but still seeing all of the stimuli. We leave one side uncovered where the door is, so she can look out but she seems to feel safer with the covering. She even goes in for naps on her own!
Edit: I typed this up before you tried and saw success with the blanket. Awesome!!

When our dogs were first with us we started the kennel right next to the bed, and if they'd get whimpery I could put my hand down so they knew I was there. Then every night we moved it a little further away until it was down the hall and in our main living space. We also would put them in the kennel even when we were home and used kongs with frozen peanut butter or long lasting chews. We also practiced and don't open the kennel door until they're laying down. After time they don't really get too excited in there at all when we come back to let them out. I think the most important thing to remember is all these things will take time, and takes some endurance.

Using your videos, my 18-month-old pup now heads to his crate on cue when we say “Go to bed!” He lays down and waits for his nighttime biscuits (3 small Teddy Bear shaped biscuits) and nearly always sleeps all night! If he barks, we know it’s time for a quick bathroom break but he goes back in and goes to sleep afterwards. We always keep one of his indestructible toys in the crate with him and sometimes you can even tell that he’s awake and chewing without any distress. Daytime is a bit more challenging but he’s getting better about being left alone in the daytime. Love this series and you guys! 💜

Hang in there with crate training! I had never had any issues crate training a dog until I got one of the ones I have now. I thought she just wasn't going to be a dog you could not crate. But I kept at it and she now tolerates her crate quite well. She doesn't go in on her own accord, but will go in and lie down and relax on cue. While she doesn't "love" it, she isn't stressed about it and will happily go in with a nice lick mat. When we get home, she's still relaxing in the crate. (BTW, we had an Irish Wolfhound who had figured out how to open her crate and if we left her in the crate, she'd open it and come out on her own. The first time we returned home to her out of her crate, we figured we hadn't closed it properly. Next time we left, we made sure it was properly closed. Got home, she's at the door to greet us. So we taped it. Yep, she was opening the crate herself). And leave it is such an important lesson! We were out on a walk the other day and someone had thrown out some french fries from McDonald's. Really tempting, but all I had to say was "leave it" and they happily left the french fries alone.

@@messymarcywright6442Thank you 🙏🧡 it could be excess energy as I'm 45 and she's faster than me. It can't be boredom surely? I do play with toys in the garden with her. Which I replace and rotate regularly. We race for the toy, play fetch and wrestle with the toys, and I let her win half the time and we take regular breaks but she will sit down or wonder off and start sniffing the garden and start digging. Now when I stop her or tell her to leave it she gets annoyed and bites.
I do training with her too, and she sit, lays down, stands and high fives and she comes when called, house toilet trained, she is also crate trained and sleeps through the night til 7am with two (2 hour) sleeps during the day. I love her so much and she's clever and amazing but she my first dog and I'm struggling with the biting, the digging and leash training.
I know she loves me back but I really don't think she respects me and I'm worried that she is taking charge, especially when she runs off with the toy into the house and sit on my spot on the sofa.
Anyway sorry to go on. Thank you for your comments it probably is too much energy for an old lady like me.

Thought I would tell you about something that happened the other day with Lily, 6-month-old Shih Tzu. We are on the porch and there are all kinds of helicopters on the porch. I don't want her to eat them because they may hurt her tummy. She picks one up, I say leave it, and she puts it down. She goes to the next one I say leave it, and she walks away. Great right lol. I had to sweep the porch off because leave it for the first 12 didn't stop her from going to the next 12 to pick them up lol. She didn't pick one up after the first one but only because I said leave it for each and everyone before she picked it up lol. She is coming along so well, still working on coming if she is the least bit distracted. Thank you for all the help you have given me with the videos.

Don't give up on the crate training. You never know when they are going to have to be in a crate without you there and they need to be able to handle that situation calmly. If she goes to the vet for an overnight procedure or if you go on vacation and have to leave her with a boarder, the crate training comes into play. All four of our dogs love their crates!

Make the crate more cosy inside it.. a tiny little bed she can climb in to within it.. make half of the floor newspaper... so she then looks for the nice bed, and not the newspaper. The cage doesn't look that comforting for a young pup.. (just some suggestions.). also a marrow bone will help her settle in there.. been there with small dogs.. they are different in my opinion to bigger dogs to train!.

Hi Zak. I just got a 3 month old puppy 3 weeks ago. He is very smart and energetic puppy. So far he has learned Sit and lie down. And he can do it well. He is currently learning Look and me. He is good at come when called. I just taught him how to stay when the crate opens. And he won't do his 1+1s in the crate. He only does it on the grass. He is very well in sleeping in the crate by himself!!! He might do his 1s in the crate. But mostly it is in his water bowl. He is "trustworthy" enough to be off leash outside the house, and it is not fenced. He came to me when I called. And he chases me around so that's how I know that my puppy (Pax) is reliable enough. Zak, please tell me if I need to "fix up" a bit more or what else he needs to learn. But leave it.. Don't ask.

@Blond_bowie has been with me since last monday and she has the same issue with the crate as the pulpy in this video. I made a video of our first attempt, which is really funny. My second attempt last night was horror. Even gave me nightmares, the poor boy. I have tried too long and he was really anxious. This video makes me hopefully. I have watched many of your videos and love you guys! Thank you! He is perfect in all the other exercises.

I'm trying to find a video of a little terrier dogs being trained to leave cats alone. We adopted an amazing 1 yr old jack russell (still intact) who was great with previous owner's cats but if given the chance, he's going after mine like they're stuffed animals. We already booked his surgery and been clicker training him, exercise, play, etc, but please tell me the neuter surgery will do the trick! 😥

My rescue dog has separation anxiety. It we don’t know where loyalty takes over. When we first got him, we would leave the house and it was non stop barking. Now he settles after 15-20mins so it’s progress but still…!

Question for you: our 8 mo old pup was previously sleeping through the night but now starts crying halfway through like Veronica did. We make sure she has all her needs taken care of (energy, pee/poo, water, food etc), but she seems to have started a negative association with the crate because she’s kept in there at night. During these periods when we are working to regain the positive association, how should we let her sleep? Outside of the crate?

Can you let me know how big the crate and controlled area should be? Veronica's area looks very large. Does she hace accidents in there?

I just adopted a rescue Pug, but he’s not a puppy. He’s about 2 yrs old according to the vet. His foster taught him to sit and be comfortable with the crate, but not much else. Should I start with ‘leave it’?

Hey Zak, do you have advice for someone getting a new puppy who can’t take time off work to slowly ease them into being alone? I don’t work super long hours, only about 6 hours a day Monday - Friday. I’m worried about leaving her in her crate all day and what kind of anxiety will develop from it

Thank you for these videos! I love your positive and loving training style. How do I train two puppy siblings? Do I lock one away while training the other? Or try training them together?
The first seems cruel, either if they are in another room or in a crate watching. The latter seems like a recipe for disaster!
    Grateful for your guidance 🙏

    • @kaclama
      @kaclama 2 года назад +2

Not cruel if they're comfortable in that spot. It's good for them to learn to be away from each other sometimes, so that they don't get anxious if one has to go to the vet, etc. or if one needs to work on different training than the other one does.

@@Nessa2Bea Yes, at first, it's a really good idea to train them separately. You can train them together once they've started to "get" the lessons. Then you've got the whole "litter mate syndrome" thing. Some people say you shouldn't have litter mates--that they won't bond with you, just be bonded to each other. I've had litter mates sand did not find that to hold water, but it is good for them to be apart for a little time each day. And you're going to make mistakes along the way. But I can almost guarantee you're aren't going to "mess them up for life"! Stick with positive methods and you'll have a great relationship with your dogs, even if you make some mistakes along the way.

@@janhankins911 Thank you for the encouragement 🙏. I look forward to the point when I can train them together, but you're right, I do want them to have a healthy independence from one another.

I love all of these videos and feel that I have learned an enormous amount. But I do wonder about the criticisms from other dog trainers that these methods won't work with dogs that have aggression issues with other dogs or humans. I am hoping that Zak can demonstrate that positive methods work even with dogs that have these issues.

I have an 8 year old German Shepherd she is a guard dog but at times especially at night she barks alot. She barks at moon light, rain, maybe annoying birds and boredom. I tell her to be quiet ( only lasts 5 minutes sometimes) and alot of times it frustrates me as I like to get some sleep too. I can't win when I have a cat waking me up 2am for attention or for food ( she gets fed around 4 am)
