Exactly, and many of these other industries are much more powerful than big tobacco. It amazes me how normalized alcohol is, despite the fact that it's victims are often decades younger than those who die from smoking. I remember being at a sports event where kids with their parents would make some noise to fill up a virtual glass with beer.
d-o-p-a-m-i-n-e. :sip: (as he is taking a literal sip of beer with the vape nearby (though not about to or wanting at all to take a puff) though it usually means something totally non-alcohol-related in my jargon. 😅)
Dear DW, your style of documentary making sets a benchmark. The range of stories you cover is amazingly I appreciate all your talented team members behind documentary making.
DW, as of recently, has become my favourite news and documentary channel. It's not easy with so much competition out there but you really do excel in all areas. I like your unbiased and unaffected approach to different topics. This comment is just to show my appreciation after watching, yet another, fantastic documentary by you.
I was born into a chain smoker family (WWII Pacific Theatre Navy vet)…. and was an occasional smoker in HS and at college. and 2-3 packs a day my junior & senioryears… I quit cold turkey at age 25. Clean since… 46 years this January.
In Brazil I'm seeing kids smoking more and more on recent years. I lost my grandfather to smoking, he died coughing pieces of his melted darkened lungs, a horrible way to die. I'm really worried for the next generations, smoking is becoming one more on the huge amount of issues they will have to deal with.
Download “quit smoking in 2 hr “ by Jason Vale , also look for tablets that’d help you quit( nicotine free ) ! There’s no pleasure in smoking, let’s be honest ❤
You will never get an interview or any correspondence from these cigarette makers. I tried to when I was in college for my journalism program. That was in 2005.
The vape company's as same like McDonald's and others. Get the people addict in the early ages and you will have customers for whole life. Get richer and richer every day.
I worked in tobacco industry for two decades. Since the adverse effects of smoking were publicised, smokers became a tiny fraction of employees (three, maybe four people out of the entire office floor). Nonetheless, even for us - non-smokers, the first prototypes of icos were a big surprise as they coincided with the mass rise of much cheaper vapes. We could not fathom why PMI insisted on the usage of tobacco instead of glycol-based solutions. However, since cigarettes were extremely profitable in certain markets, the company could not simply stop making them. Icos became a "healthier" alternative made of the same/similar materials.
I am almost 67, and both my parents were heavy smokers. Even though I never smoked, I have allergies and asthma as a result. Every time I see young people vaping, it breaks my heart!
That reminds me of a text that I found in a 1970ies staple novel, written as a 'testimony of the friend of someone who decided to stop smoking' in which the ex-smoker was described as formerly agreeable, but after the stop having turned into an unbearable grouch on a mission to make other people stop, too. The poorly hidden message obviously was, don't stop smoking because it will turn you into something miserable. (I hated the text, as a passive smoker with no way to escape)
I was a 2 packeter a day I stopped 10years ago. My lungs are still self cleaning themselves. The body is so unique. I regret ever starting but never will regret stopping.
Yeah sounds impossible, yet with Maria Luisa Clare, I've come to the conclusion that financially anything is possible. I got my self my dream car 🚗 just last weekend and a whooping $320k in savings already, My journey with her started after my best friend came back from New York and saw me suffering in debt then told me about her and how to change my life through her. Maria L. Clare is the kind of person one needs in his or her life! I got a home, a good wife, and a beautiful daughter. Note!:: this is not a promotion but me trying to make a point that no matter what happens, always have faith and keep living!!
Philip Morris offer gaslighting along with their smoke free cigarettes. *For those outside of Australia. A packet of cigarettes is around $50+ AUD. Most of that goes to tax and it hasn't discouraged smokers.
Just remember there's still literally commercials out there floating around from doctors in the 60s recommending cigarettes. Now apply that in today's world just because someone has gone to school for a profession doesn't mean they're doing it for the right reasons. Don't just blindly trust a doctor because they went to school. It took the sixth doctor to find out I had brain tumors.... Everybody else was calling me crazy or hysterical.
All multinational companies around the world have one thing in common, they disregard the consequences of their products for as long as they get rich from the destruction of the environment and deaths of people.😢
As someone from the United States who has traveled to Europe extensively, it bizarre how we are so behind in many ways except when it comes to smoking. At least where I live in California and amongst my demographic, I haven't seen a lit cigarette for a while. I even forgot how it smelled like until I traveled to other countries where it seems at least 25 percent of the population smokes.
I know what you're talking about. Whenever I travel overseas, an evening out automatically guarantees a dry cleaning bill in order to get my clothing fumigated. 🤔
NZ is more strict than the US. The average cost of a pack of marlboro start at 23usd and anyone born after 2009 will never be able to purchase nicotine products amongst other restrictions. Not sure if it's better but coming from NZ, it's been a huge shock living in Germany and Austria these past 15 years and having to combat this normalised addiction. I started smoking the first 5 years in order to socialise and practice my German but gave it up as I ultimately never grew up with it as a norm. Plus I detest the smell. I wore contact lenses when I was young and remember working behind the bar at nightclubs & music festivals in 2000-2005 suffering the inside smoking as I worked. Super glad that ended.
a friend of mine died of throat cancer at the age of 20yo but my uncle whom are 3packs daily smoker lived a healthy life live currently 60yo and still working, never went to hospital or sick. some people are just has good tolerance others are not so fortunate.
29:27 Here the person fell into several logical fallacies, the fallacy of false analogy, and the fallacy of false equality. The difference between smoking and car accidents: Smoking is a harmful, voluntary behavior that has no necessary benefit for daily life, and it harms the smoker and others through passive smoking. Cars and bicycles are not just “personal freedom”, they are essential tools for transportation, work and daily life. Then, the accidents it causes are not the result of its “use itself,” but rather due to (mistakes) in driving or unforeseen circumstances. The comparison here is incorrect for several reasons, because smoking and cars have a completely different nature in terms of purpose, harm, and social role, and banning smoking is not the same as banning cars. Smoking can be restricted or banned because it is inherently harmful, while cars and bicycles cannot be banned because they play an essential role in society. Finally: It must be known that personal freedom does not become (personal) when it harms others, and must be restricted when it harms others.
Great Documentary D W! I could never get pass the smell from the smoke to even consider taking a puff, which i concluded if the smell is that bad, just think of the awful chemicals that are put in this stuff!

I got hooked on cigs around age 16. At that age I was susceptible to peer pressure. I was 45 when I was finally able to quit for good. At age 55 I will probably avoid health problems from the habit, at least that is what the long term health studies show.
I was shocked when I saw German people smoking while walking with their kids, at train stations and bus stops, etc. In general, the Germans are very well-known for their enthusiasm for protecting their rights, but how on earth do people think smoking in the presence of the other in public is the right thing to do. All my friends who visited Germany were very disappointed with the smoking behavior there. It is highly irresponsible and a total lack of self-awareness.
i never understood how tobacco could become so addictive. I would smoke it at parties/social gatherings when invited, then I would buy packs myself when i was depressed, but I could never finish them, and usually threw away the packs with a whoel bunch of cigs left inside. The aftertaste it left in my mouth, the awful smell it left in my fingers and clothes, it was just yuck.
I use the pouches and I'm so glad I switched. Mom died of small cell lung ....you get the jist. We can do better people. We are smarter then this. She even knew when I was a baby BUT STILL SMOKED WITH ME THERE HER ENTIRE LIFE AND....it was stupid. ....senseless....she was a good woman....a selfish woman...but she deserved to see her grandkids...they would of loved her.
this docu forgets tabacco "snus" and all the various pouches of tobacco or other nicotine containing sachets, kept in the mouth. Also extremely addictive and cancer inducing (mouth and throat cancer)
man i am glad i stopped smoking (though it took 3 long but eventually unccessful attempts, all of which were great and insightful though) ... currently i vape, moderately, though at a pretty high dose, and really have been liking it (5th or 6th year or so now? i am in my late 30s. ...). everything about it is better, basically, other than you are not holding a little stick in your hands. i'll still smoke an occasional smoke, but because i am going to thoroughly enjoy it and not anything else... it's such a perverse addiction. yet, one day i literally got distracted from by usual habits and ended up not smoking and afterwards, it's been good vaping years, at least. 😻definitely am against smoking in general though, esp. in people under 16 or even 25, (cigarettes, that is - perhaps vaping could/should be earlier, because of the lack of evidence currently and the fact teens WILL end up doing w/e they want to do ... they're not dumb, and at some point in your teenage life you tend to want to "reject authority" and "claim your freedom" ... until more research is done... at least i started after i was 21, myself (don't remember exactly when, but my mindset was basically "well, all my family from both sides were smokers and i'm a pretty mature person and trust in myself being able to have restrain.). had i started earlier, it might've been an awfully, already awful awful bad time. ... they do have a doctor in the video saying that if you are smoking, then going over to vaping can be a huge help, i can also stand by that as it has helped me a lot. But we are not meant to breath what ever is in vapes, we are meant to breath air, so it issent good to do, but it is a lot better than smoking.

Corporations promote personal choice, which allows people to harm themselves while they profit. Then, governments become addicted to the money.

Nothing normal about candy - also a lethal addiction! Let's face it - convenience stores are not healthy stores.
Convenient stores are the Devil , I’m staying out from now on

7:48 Interesting chewing tobacco/dip arent included in the three types. Are they not popular or not available where this was filmed?
I'm just a chill guy with my $51K biweekly and not bothered about anything else anymore!!!..

Miss Maria Luisa Clare is a remarkable individual whom has brought immense positivity and inspiration into my life.

I was gonna get an ecig but my buddy told me at the first of the year they'll be outlawed in my state,KY,thats so stupid
Smoke inhalation has been a thing ever since we had lungs. It's part of our evolution. Our modern lives are to blame for most illness.
The problem with me is I keeps on relapsing
4 minutes in I know this is staged. I'll watch on but I'm already disappointed.
What about nicotine pouches? Are they dangerous for gums & teeth?
i have always wondered about that. snus is very popular in Sweden
Very addictive and bad for your mouth health
@@JeffBilkinswhere are the studies for this , chewing tobacco is but these little pouches like zyn are too new to the market
Governments need to protect ppl from themselves
Remember, smoking is 100% preventable. Those tell-tale vertical wrinkles on the upper lip always give away a smoker.

nicotine industry is such an easy target to criticise... how about talk about social media or big pharma?
DW does.
Big pharma terrible too
And study on rarely smoking pure Tobacco cigar?
No balls to take on big tobacco?

Thank God people choose e cigarettes over the real ones. The health benefit is insane.
I stopped smoking using snuffs. I'm still nicotine addicted, but i don't smoke.

First 10 minutes really feel like tobacco propaganda.
Business as usual. Hey, "just say no"...
37:26 i would argue that iphones, sugar and alcohol are also drugs.
I smoke 2 grams of tobacco and half gram of weed everyday. I'm using from 20 years i can't quit, but i cut it down a lot.

Well the smokers cant buy it is the companies dont sell it.

Why did you voice over rather than subtitles? 😢
Although I have been a fan of 'foreign' films 🎥 since the 1960s, I for one prefer the voice-over methodology used here very effectively.
Too often subtitles aren't properly contrasted against the background making them difficult to read, especially on smartphones!
