It’s because of social media. Smh 🤦🏽♀️ i noticed it’s been viral over the last year or so and now people who don’t have a history eating it are now into it.
@zl6198 that is true. A few groups but as usual, it's black vs white. Understandable, it is a huge part if our culture. Most of it, not positive and forced on EVERYONE
I distinctly remember as a child growing up, going to the store and picking it up $.48 a pound $14 a pound in some places outrageous and that was back in the 70s
Brisket and any BBQ meats. Basically any "weird" parts or things that took along time too cook were cheap. Than once the rich folk got a taste for them the prices jacked up
It's called "selling for what the market will bear" and I would hardly call your local butcher "rich" if you have one. Perfect example of mass immigration sucking up the resources and driving up the prices. Notice I didn't say cost. Not that you would understand the difference between the two. Can't even make a simple potato and oxtail stew anymore. Yeah, keep voting democrat.
Black culture is gentrified because those people producers are always looking for the next big investment opportunity and their consumers are always looking for the next big cool thing to chase after
Pork shoulder now, too. All our ‘ethnic/immigrant/visible minority’ economic cuts of meat and poultry that our moms bought for our meals are snapped up by bougie chefs driving up demand.
There is a missing factor here. Ox tail has been popular and frequently prized with historic American cuisine (and French/Italian/British/etc...) - for those who understand how to prepare it. But it lost popularity (and faded from memory) in American kitchens as it became uncommon to in the grocery store. The modern grocery store does not want to sell dozens of cuts of meat. They are going to sell a few and toss the rest into the grinder to keep things simple (we lost the skilled butcher). This has been an issue with many other cuts that could be prepared into amazing dishes. Economics can really damage culture and society when something is not practical. Yes, ox tail is one of my favorite cuts.
I"m 60 and I've been eating oxtail for as long as I remember. But here in Canada I've noticed that oxtail has been going up in price way before covid . It's been at least 10 years since I last bought it so I'm not blaming it all on covid. IT'S DAM DELICIOUS
What the hell?! Oxtail was supposed to be cheap throwaway meat that’s great for stews and “poor people food” now it’s expensive?! At this point to save on food prices, the homeless will be eating filet mignon.
Supply and demand is what makes the price. as the video stated oxtail is just a "tiny" section of the butcher meat of the animal its practically a rare delicacy of the animal. you cannot simply make it cheap so who gonna get it? the one who wants it cheap? or the one who wants it now?
If you hate hikes in oxtail prices, you hate capitalism. This is the process, value is found, and extracted. ESPECIALLY if it targets the poor and the few luxuries they have/had.
All of these people complaining about the prices of oxtail… Hope they didn’t vote for Trump bc you sure as hell aren’t going to see prices for ANYTHING to go down.
All good things become a trend and ruin the price. Ox tail made from real Jamaicans cannot be best. Imo. I've been lucky enough to work with a woman who was an amazing home cook.
If people are forced to buy a cheaper inferior product, then you say put the prices up as there is more demand... Capitalism is disgusting. No more CEOs.

This was throwaway meat back when I was a kid in the 80's. Some local butchers even gave it away for free.
Like some houses ;)
Well, Americans being Americans
Lobster was the same way
I was going to make my grandmother's oxtail soup- I passed on it! It would have been a $100 pot of poor man's soup!
Bitcoin too
The next chicken wing!
already there
one day maybe poop or anything disgusting if went viral on social media
It’s because of social media. Smh 🤦🏽♀️ i noticed it’s been viral over the last year or so and now people who don’t have a history eating it are now into it.
Asians have been eating it forever
It's been longer than that but yes social media. We are getting to the point where, 90% of trends or anything newly popular is due to media.
@zl6198 that is true. A few groups but as usual, it's black vs white. Understandable, it is a huge part if our culture. Most of it, not positive and forced on EVERYONE
Everyone has a history what are you on about
capitalism baby, extract the value. If you found something cheap and good, stfu, that's the only chance you have of keeping it.
Another poor people's food became luxury food.
I distinctly remember as a child growing up, going to the store and picking it up $.48 a pound $14 a pound in some places outrageous and that was back in the 70s
example of rich stealing from the poor kind of food like lobster and ribs
Shrimp too
Brisket and any BBQ meats. Basically any "weird" parts or things that took along time too cook were cheap. Than once the rich folk got a taste for them the prices jacked up
but lobster and ribs taste good and dont feel like beef jello in your mouth...

That's everything nowadays...
Not only black cultures eat oxtails. Many Europeans traditionaly have eaten it. Nothing new.
Yeah it’s because it’s in high demand and people love it, In America if it’s liked a lot the prices go up every time
Just like chicken wings. Was very cheap and nobody ate it then it exploded in price.
dollar a pound near me at the moment elsewhere i have seen it go for insane prices
Oxtail soup is delicious
This is the same thing that happened to chicken wings and beef rib tips.
Pork shoulder now, too. All our ‘ethnic/immigrant/visible minority’ economic cuts of meat and poultry that our moms bought for our meals are snapped up by bougie chefs driving up demand.
Used to be worthless 10-15yrs ago. Thanks to amazing Jamaican food 😂. Being that it now costs more than steak, I’ll take the ribeye over oxtail
Problem is the rib eye price ain't going down
@ neither is oxtail prices
Just waiting for chicken gizzards prices to skyrocket.
And intestines. Jamaicans love liver and tripe.
Hey ,don't advertise
Oxtail is the best. Its always been a SPECIAL AND COSTLY treat where i am from in Africa.

The funny thing is make oxtail cheap again will probably make it more expensive
Same issue in the UK. It used to be the most affordable of soups and now it's a luxury' meal.
such a great doc on this!
lets just go back to gatekeeping things
Chefs, started cooking oxtails on TV, prices went up. You're paying mostly for bone.
For taste. But prices are really wierd.
Go back to eating ground meat so we can eat our food affordable again. all of a sudden everyone wanna eat ox tails
Gatekeeping how to cook something is stupid AF
Amazing work. Now I want Oxtail❤
What the hell?! Oxtail was supposed to be cheap throwaway meat that’s great for stews and “poor people food” now it’s expensive?! At this point to save on food prices, the homeless will be eating filet mignon.
at one point lobsters used to be pig feed...
Pigeons need to be back on menu
It’s just trends around the world with different dishes and coupled with how available it is???
@@kalashydra9016they used to served it to prisoners too
@@kalashydra9016it was a lot grosser, it was basically crushed whole shell and all. the same with how prisoners ate it
Even at costco its ridiculously expensive
JRK in Miami makes an excellent oxtail bowl. $25.00 for two people to share a bowl. 😍
Tell Judith to try the beef shank.
Lengua 😍🥰
Oxtail is big in South Africa. Traditional food.
Just like Skirt Steak! It used to be one of the cheapest cuts of meat until the big Fajita craze!
I’ve been cooking with oxtails for 20 years. It’s my favourite cut of meat alongside tongue.
Tongue is underrate organ. It's great
Oxtail used for broth. Yummy
Love the taste, ive had it in one of my favorite stews from senegal, the smell can be a turnaway but its very tender
what are you talking about? oxtail smells amazing.
Question: what about eating other part of the ox?????
Oxtail used to be a staple in my country. Nowhere to be found now that I went again.
had oxtail for the first time this year in a while becuase it is expensive been a while since i had it tasted so good
Have actually had to pull these out of toilets lol
Supply and demand is what makes the price. as the video stated oxtail is just a "tiny" section of the butcher meat of the animal its practically a rare delicacy of the animal. you cannot simply make it cheap so who gonna get it? the one who wants it cheap? or the one who wants it now?
I love oxtails stews
This was comfort food for Jamaicans now it’s luxury food.
MEAT PRICES ARE TOO DAMM HIGH
sometimes i think about going vegetarian bc of it
If you hate hikes in oxtail prices, you hate capitalism. This is the process, value is found, and extracted. ESPECIALLY if it targets the poor and the few luxuries they have/had.
Woman has a brilliant recipe. Damn.
As a 1st generation American with Jamaican background I can say that oxtails is overrated
Yes it taste good but not damn near $20 good
because the demand for it is high
jamaican tonkotsu ramen sounds fire ngl. MAKE IT HAPPEN
it's so goddamn delicious it always felt like mismatch of how cheap it always been
Need to GMO some two tailed cows.
btw, the US dollar is worth 33% less than it was in 2015
All of these people complaining about the prices of oxtail… Hope they didn’t vote for Trump bc you sure as hell aren’t going to see prices for ANYTHING to go down.
Yeah and wish people would stop looking at stuff we southerners eat, y'all have caused prices to soar.
Just like a lobster was once considered a poor man's food
MOCA - make oxtail cheap again
Kare kare just got expensive.
Ox tail meat is the most powerful meat in the ox. The butchers keep it for their own family. That's a known secret
Just had oxtail pho last night. Yum
I miss hearing the original narrator's voice of Business Insider.
not the first time food for the poor became expensive
Literal unsub
Seen the price for chicken feet?
still cheap...for now
Make Oxtail Great Again!
Another horrible case of that was then this is now what was something common and established in the past now is changed
Oxtail ravioli? 😩🥴🚫
All your masterchef bs made it expensive, cos they alleviated it to something exotic, making it to high end restaurants
Us Jamaicans know why 🤨
All good things become a trend and ruin the price. Ox tail made from real Jamaicans cannot be best. Imo. I've been lucky enough to work with a woman who was an amazing home cook.
😠This just goes to show, BPCHS!!
YT PEPO
Because people hype it up everytime. When something low best believe someone made it great and expensive

Bloodclot!
Food is food bro

If people are forced to buy a cheaper inferior product, then you say put the prices up as there is more demand... Capitalism is disgusting. No more CEOs.
