  • On tales from the booth (day 3), Gill Gross discusses his pick for the final, Daniil Medvedev, going out in the first round at the hands of Thiago Seyboth Wild. Also, Diane Parry brings an awesome play style to the WTA. And Alexander Zverev beat Lloyd Harris, but his level did not inspire confidence.

I know it's because you don't like a player like Karatsev (quite obvious from some of your videos), but give credit where credit due. I wonder if he gone far in this RG, would you still ignore him ? Hey Gill got a question, half not serious. What do you think of players who wear caps 🧢 I don’t mean ones who wear it for functional purposes ie sun, but ones who wear them as accessories and there ability to win grand slams it seems there’s been seldom grand slam winners in the last 20 years who have been consistent in big titles (grand slams) that have won who wear caps. The half serious side would be does it actually hinder performance at times/or distract I noticed this recently when I had to wear a hat playing tennis it was so unusual. I can’t help but think there’s been very few grand slam winners who wear hats even the top 10 now apart from Rune don’t wear hats aha kind of a funny mailbag to include 😂

Meddy did improve massively this season on clay. However, best of 5 at the french is a completely different ball game. Court speed is lower, ball is fluffier, courts are bigger. Gill seems to be full of praise for Wild and focusing on the negative aspects of Meddy, but Medvedev wasn't that much worse than Wild, sine it was a fairly close 5-setter in which Medvedev broke his serve a good number of times. In a parallel universe Meddy would've gotten a little bit luckier in crucial moments and would've won this match.

I subscribed a couple of months ago because they were offering a discount. It's normally around $109, and I paid $89. It's for the whole year. I subscribed because I wanted to watch some matches that TC wasn't showing. TC Plus also has tournaments that go back years with each match that you can pick to watch. The worse thing about it that I found is that on most matches there is no commentary on the recorded matches. It's the entire tennis match as you would watch, the sound of the crowd, chair umpire calling scores, or players talking, but no commercials, and no one doing commentary.

Can't say I'm not feeling the same. I want to look to see his results, and it just shows the score from this last match. So, I'm hoping this is only a 2 week vacation from tennis when he starts his first grass tournament. He reached the final in those 2 from last year, and I'm hoping for a win or two this year.

@@sandranastia If you look at his record, this is his best year yet. 4 titles a year in 2019 and 2021. 5 so far in 2023, and we're not even half way through. Odd years seem to be his best years. I'm hoping for at least 2/3 more trophies, and maybe 1 a repeat slam. If he's going to get a repeat trophy win, let it be this one.

Seriously interested to know how ANY coach can call themselves a coach and get paid for it and yet not teach their clients basic tennis shots like volley and slice or kick serve? I mean, how do you reach 19/20 yo without these shots?
Players like Zverev (volleys) & Stef (bh slice) dont count cos their coaches are parents which only shows what a bad idea this arrangement is, but then (whatshisname) doesnt have a kick serve and so many players have no net game at all and with Wimby around the corner, how can you not have a slice?
Im baffled by the Coaching profession

Meddy deserved this loss. He didn't play well (lot of double faults, unforced errors) and/or played wrong tactically (lot of short ball returns, not enough angled short making, stayed too far from the baseline, rarely attacked Wild's slow second serve). Meddy was too deffensive in this match, thus he played to Wild's strength, allowing long rally games that he would lose eventually on this super slow court.

Luck can always be a factor to an extent but Med is not the greatest player on clay especially at RG he's never played that well. He's improved on clay somewhat but the result in Rome was mostly due to the conditions favoring him heavily imo. After Rome I thought he was being overhyped as a contender for reaching RG final.
