It’s worth noting that since Djokovic won 11 titles in 2015 and Murray won 9 titles in 2016, there have only been two seasons where any player won more than 5 titles (Federer won 7 in 2017 and Zverev won 6 in 2021). Medvedev has already won 5 and we aren’t even close yet to the part of his season where he historically performs the strongest. He may be on track for the winning-est season we’ve seen in a long time
It was during his match against Zapata Miralles that I somehow felt Medvedev could totally win the whole tournament. His level was phenomenal... No one can hit through him without redlining and killing themselves (like Rune did here) as of now, I feel..
Gill Gross Hello, as usual, very good analysis and I can say that I agree with most of it. However, I cannot understand that a super tennis analyst like you misses the biggest reason why Rune lost this tennis match which was his horrible serve. You mentioned that his cardio let him down (which you are absolutely right about) from the baseline Medvedev was also the stronger the safer and above all Medvedev had better length in his strokes than Rune had. All this you mentioned in this analysis. However for some strange reason you didn't mention the biggest reason why Rune lost this final and that was because of his horrible first serve (he lands a horrible 49% of first serves in) certainly the serve is not as important on clay as it is in the faster surfaces. But still, the serve is important even on clay so you can dictate the rallies in the third fifth or seventh stroke. The most important shots in tennis are the third, fifth and seventh strokes. And the player who does the most damage in the third, fifth and seventh strokes in tennis is the player who 99% of the time wins the tennis matches. That’s why the big 3 are so breathtaking good because nobody does a better job than them on this three shots Nadal mostly on clay Federer, and Djokovic on the other surfaces. And for you to have the opportunity to be successful in these very important strokes, you must have a good first serve. Either land a high first serve in or have a good spot serve, which Rune had not achieved either of them. His serve was a completely disastrous he played this final with a second serve and not a first serve. And without a first serve against a quality player like Medvedev, you have no chance. And a great tennis analyst like you to fail to mention this very important part about why Rune lost this final is a huge mystery to me. And last but not least my friend, Medvedev's serve was not broken in the second set at 3-3 due to Rune prolonging the rallies and showing great patience (absolutely not) that game Rune got as a Christmas present from the Russian. That was Medvedev's worst game in the entire final with 3 simple unforced errors. So that's why Rune laughed and couldn't understand that a super consistent Medvedev (who hardly made any mistakes the whole match) was a completely Santa Clause in that 3-3 game in the second set. Watch that game again and you'll see what I mean. Apart from these two things (where you are absolutely not right) I agree with everything else. Cheers😉
@@GillGross Side note: I myself played a match on soggy clay yesterday. I mostly sucked, aside from the first set where I rallied from 1-5 down to force a tiebreak. Hearing your comments on Daniil’s previous struggles and recent improvements gives me hope that soon enough I can do the same.

When he came back out, it was with a renewed determination to go for his shots & was much more aggressive for a while and he was defo troubling Meddy there till he got into too many long rallies. So was the courtside coaching a good thing in the end. Hmmm.
@Gill I feel we should also factor in the fact that it was really Rainy conditions in Rome. Which would mean lower bounce on clay than usual which I feel helped Medvedev and contributed to his success.
Excellent point. Add improved movement and new strings which gave him more depth and spin too. But the cold, damp and rainy conditions definitely contributed to a lower bounce like indoor conditions. He himself said madrid and the French open play more like hard (interesting he didn't mention Rome). So I think he will be very effective at night when the bounce is lower
Four straight 7-5 sets against Tsitsipas and Rune by Meddy. It's as if he coasts until 5-5, then puts his foot on the accelerator to leave his opponents in the dust.
Medvedev has a rare ability to hit attacking shots that put pressure on his opponent even when he himself is in an extreme defensive position. He gets to almost every ball and hardly ever gives the opponent an easy shot. That continuous pressure cracks most opponents.
One of the things the new Gen don't have yet is the endurance for 5 set matches. Med yes, Carlos yes but Rune? I doubt he could last against Med in a 5 setter. IMO. They all are too tall and too thin. Good example was Nadal during the AO in 2022. But Rune is only 20. Long way to go...

For sure - I think you did a nice job using tape to support the case for why the ‘attack’ differences were key, beyond just the initial stat. Nice vid man!
Rune has improved his shot selection but he still has work to do. There were too many unnecessary net approaches and bad drop shots. He should trust his baseline game more even against Medvedev.
Gill earlier in the year you said Medvedev would never retain world #1. With his incredible first half of the season (normally better in 2nd half), and improvements on Clay, have you changed your mind?
IDK where to put a question for Gill's mailbag. Try to start here. It is about the players that ITF/ATP lists as "ambidextrous". Are they really? Because I have a suspicion that they put players who have 2-handed forehand there. But truly ambidextrous shall serve equally good with both hands. Somehow I doubt that there are that many or any at all. Although I have 48 players listed as such in ATP database - from ITF or ATP sources.
Interesting about Rune "not making difficult volleys into successful volleys" - is that because it's just too difficult, or because Rune lacks the skill? I can't say I agree that Medvedev's game is beautiful, but he is dogged. I think, though, Rune does seem to have a problem with running out of gas and needs to work on his cardio, especially with two slams coming up.
Rune will need the whole season for that. Cardio is not going to improve in the next 2 slams. His current cardio level might just about be okay in Wimbledon, although if he plays multiple 5 setters, it is still doubtful.
it always surprises me how analysts and what not tend to over do it. the best player in the world, if he decides, can be a threat and hella dominant in every single tournament. he has by far most wins this year ffs. how can this surprise folk ?

Rune has improved his shot selection but he still has work to do. There were too many unnecessary net approaches and bad drop shots. He should trust his baseline game more even against Medvedev.
I think Meddy needs to start winning in Clay if he wants to reach/sustain n1 position in his career. Although I think we will be good on grass.
One beneath tsitsipas on the power rankings?? 👀
Medvedev, like the big chess players, read Rune like an open book.
Take a look at the stats for Rune's first serve in the final
Gill earlier in the year you said Medvedev would never retain world #1. With his incredible first half of the season (normally better in 2nd half), and improvements on Clay, have you changed your mind?
Gill don't you think that losing the Australian Open finals in 2021 and 2022 negatively affected Medvedevs results on clay?
Robert I definitely don’t think so maybe by USO cardio will be better
@@colethomas903 yes, he has to work on it this whole season and also the upcoming off season to be able to match the top guys in best of five.
it always surprises me how analysts and what not tend to over do it. the best player in the world, if he decides, can be a threat and hella dominant in every single tournament. he has by far most wins this year ffs. how can this surprise folk ?
Doesn't the endurance factor get better with age? Rune is 20. Djokovic used to have similar problems at this age.
YIV it could but here’s the concern for best of 5 for now if some how he had to play back to back best of 5 matches over 2 days if it rain at RG could he survive that physically
Yes, often improves in early 20s.
Just becoz I am curious, can someone tell me alcaraz 's record against top 5 players?
@gilgross u have the # ?
Remember, Gill when you said Medvedev would never become number one again ? Changing that alittle now maybe ?
That day has come. Medvedev won a tournament on clay. Maybe he hates clay a little bit less now.
Andrey Rublev wins monte carlo open
Daniil Medvedev wins Rome open
Russians are ruling the clay court.
This shows if you're in land of grass where cows are there but no clay is there.
Asti Spumante is great!
Earlier in the year, you said you didn’t think Medvedev would be #1 again. And then you double downed on that statement. He is now just a few hundred points from #1. Do you still feel the same way or with this breakthrough on clay, do you think he could now become #1 again?
Looking forward to seeing your power rankings! Nowadays I make my own power rankings as well before the Slams start and then compare it to yours. A lot of times they’re pretty similar! Interested to see what the few differences are this time and your reasonings
Billy can’t wait to see yours
@@colethomas903 already made mine but I’ll wait until Gill releases his video tomorrow before putting it in the comments!
Hi Billy,
I do the same thing. I make my own power rankings too just for the fun.
@@BillyBob-xi9ih 1. alcaraz
2. djokovic (but djoker is still my pick for the title 100%)
3. medvedev
4. tsitsipas (rune would beat him but its due to bo5)
5. rune
6. rublev
7. ruud
8. sinner
9. coric (upset alert)
10. faa (upset alert)
Rune was too passive in the first set. Maybe nerves.
He doesn’t just lead the race lol. He has 39 wins on the season. No one else has over 30. He is smoking everyone!!
MEMEVEDEV, CLAYVEDEV, GOATVEDEV!!!!
Rune always give away the serve right when he wins the draw. I know Gilbert's view, Winning Ugly - but Gilbert didnt have Holger's serve
Thomas draw ha ha
Every player should have right to play under her/his country's flag. One cannot choose the country of one's birth.
WTA/ATP/ITF, stop this nonsense and do not mix sport with politics.
Appointing "flag police" at the AO 2023 was not even childish... it was embarassing and insane...
Wars are run by politicians not sportsmen/sportswomen.
Why during the invasion of Iraq, 20 year bombing of Afghanistan not to mention the genocidal Vietnam war US, Australian, UK... athletes were allowed to compete under their national flag?
USA invaded Iraq in 2003 and yet their flag was still allowed at the World Cup 2006 in Germany and 2010 in South Africa despite the fact they were still in Iraq. Either ban ALL flags of countries who go to war, or don't ban any of them.
Another example; are Israeli (Para-)olympians responsible for the policy of their government towards Palestinians?

All wars are equal, but some wars are more equal than others.
We have only one person who is the King of clay Rafael Nadal.
The match was boring to watch, something that rarely can be said when Alcaraz plays.
You take too long to get to the point.
A 10-15 minute video stretched to 30+ minutes with nothing more to say.
Congrats Meddy..but Alcaraz wins Roland Garros..
Medvedev was being sarcastic. He knew he would do well. You and most tennis pundits don’t appear to have very good insight. You constantly make bad predictions and are not very good at fessing up when you’re wrong.
Simply missing Nadal🥲
Good on Meddy. He worked hard and he won. But his tennis is so boring to watch! A total snooze fest imo. 🥱
A I didn’t mind the match in Rome was ok
