- ZZ Top at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, Hollywood 8.21.09. This was an awesome show seen from the edge of the stage with Slash and John Mayer joining the boys for the encore "La Grange" - and they were Really Rocking from just 6 feet away!!!!!

He probably knew he needed to bring his A game considering he’s playing with some of the biggest names in rock and roll history and he’s more of a pop and soft rock kind of guy.
Why all the hate towards Slash? Like we all know how talented JM is but for goodness sake these guys are simply having a fun jam session.

Because slash’s phrasing was off, went out of key at one point, went for a big bend for a note that was definitely not a target note. If he was in the studio he would want another take on it and so would everyone else

I would agree John has a better sound because he crafted it as the perfect mix of Stevie and Hendrix, but you’ve gotta remember everything he’s learned those 2 created

you don't know how to play a guitar
Don't even particularly like John Mayer as a songwriter but this will always be one of my favorite videos on youtube. The sheer LOLs you get out of slash just trying to shred and get as many notes into a run with little melody or timing, and then you get Mayer who's got the grove and rhythm of a funk player from the 70s and the melodic ear of a young Chuck Berry. So fucking sweet. Just shows how important that right hand is. If you don't got it, you're only playing half as good as you could be. Props to the funkiest white boy on that stage.
Its all about the timing for the song. Mayer's solo is spot on whereas Slash's is slightly off beat. Both incredible guitar players but Mayer wins hands down.

Yeah everyone's saying Mayer's was so much better and it was, but Idk if that would or wouldn't be the case of slash was more on time. Idk

That's because Slash is not the best when it comes to blues, Its his weak point, But when it comes to Rock or Metal he is the best in the room.. For sure...While on the other hand John is a good and his only strength a Blues guitarist and the rhythm section in this video was playing 2/4 timed blues rock and about the "Eric Clapton" comment He is also basically a blues guitarist.....

I gotta say, while not a big fan of his songs, John Mayer really brought another dimension to the solo of this song. He knows how to add to the emotion and elevate it without over playing. Its a fine line, as others may disagree.

Slash, has through the hole of his career been a blues- or blues-inspired guitarist. Listen to every solo of his and you can tell. With that said, John is a beast!
John Mayer plays Pop, Blues, Funk, Jazz, Rock, Country and Many more. A true virtuoso. I love it when he plays with People he would probably consider his idols. He deserves it.

I think Slash lives comfortably in his own pocket with his music and his bands.. doesn't make him any less great..he did put out some legendary guitar work but impromtly especially on a song like this the guy with the bluesier background will stand out.. John is underrated..
I saw ZZ top here in Norway last summer and it was amazing, they are legends!

Two different players with entirely different styles. John was more experienced in this type of music. Slash was trying his hardest to play along. I don't think it was a competition but John played a lot nicer and it just went with the song better
John Mayer is just a fucking virtuoso. Slash plays the best in his style and nobody else plays that slithery, greasy, blues. But you're right, that's not what this song is.
Slash has done this kind of blues-rock plenty of times before... look at Slash's Snakepit and Slash's Blues Ball. This is hardly out of Slash's wheel-house.
The truth is that Slash just became a sloppy live guitarist from around the late 90s up until pretty recently. He's improved since putting out his latest album though.

The song itself is rock. And the licks that Slash does is more of a metal/rock thing, while John has a more bluesy kind of lick which I absolutely love! :)

I think John knows his theory better and is obviously better at blues by miles. Slash is good, but when it comes to musical creativity I have to give it to Mayer

It’s not about theory is about talent and authenticity , John is one of those born every 100 years.

Andrew Boysen agree 100% with you , ya both talent and practice make perfection , John has both , talent and you can clearly see that he knows how to play basically everything , and he has been playing for a long time , and he has practiced a lot since he was little
he barely knows any theory tho hes admitted several times that he has no idea how to play like a locrian or ionian scale and stuff. he just has a really good sense for what people like hearing and used a really good ear for it. studying or talent can both be argued but i think its just a big mix of both and not being afraid to try whatever he thinks sounds good

i agree. John played this solo better. but you can't say he is a better guitarist then slash. you can just take a look at what slash has written back in the days. there are many better and faster playing guitarists then slash but the creativity and the melody in his riffs and solos... they are fucking mind-blowing
+Jacob Anfinnsen Thon True, he had some really great stuff back in the day, however, I strongly encourage you to check out the things that John Mayer has done. I highly recommend listening to the Where the Light Is concert (or the track Out of My Mind from said concert) or even check out what he has done in the John Mayer Trio. I think that he is getting better and better with each passing day with the things he's doing with The Greatful Dead and his more recent performances. These are true tellings of a guitar virtuoso. The soul that he brings out in that guitar is breathtaking and is rare among guitarists even as great as Slash. I can't force you to appreciate his music, but I really, really hope that you can see why Mayer really is a guitar Great.
John Mayer has many more accolades in his career than does Slash. I thoroughly enjoy Slash's music, but John Mayer is a grammy award winning artist. Slash talented sure, but it is very easy to rate John Mayer as a better guitarist than Slash.
Totally agree, I think Slash is really really good when he has time to create his own solos and melodies, but when he has to improvise (especially on someone else's song) he kinda falls in the same licks

abels121 That's the problem, some people look at music or different types of art like some kind of sport. Music is about expressing feelings throgh an instrument, no competion. I've been playing guitar since I was 6 and there is technique and all that stuff but I don't consider myself better or worse than other guitar players.I play my own way, but these kinds of tv programs ruin everything about it, Was Picasso better than Dali? Nop, they were both DIFFERENT! You may like one or another, or maybe both, but that's an opinion, not a fact
