Omg. I'm so happy to have found you. Your videos are exactly what I've been looking for. Finally, someone that actually breaks it down and compares the diff between all the available choices. And talks intelligently and knowledgeably about them. Thank you. You have found a subscriber for life. Keep them coming.
I’m watch all your videos again Dustin, just because of how soothing, informative and just incredibly intelligent and wonderful you are! I feel like I’m sitting down and listening to a really good friend who’s comforting me with a cup of tea. I’ve just missed these so much. Love from Australia! xo
A solution I found to the problem of wasting product with the prolong wear is I squirt 3-4 pumps into a small container, I use an empty gel eyeliner container and that way when I put those 3-4 pumps in, I can ensure I use all of the product
I absolutely adore you. I'm a novice with MAC products but wanting to wear more. I listen to your posts now so thank you for being honest and very informative!!! and you NEVER ramble. Thanks again!!
i cannot express how thankful i am for this video, i'm a new MAC artist n eventhough i have gone through the MAC product handbook, your personal review is so enriching and i feel like you're my trainer (cos my basic school's not until march 2013)
i love how informative and honest ur vids are... it doesn't feel like ur talkin down to anyone it feels more like a one-on-one convo/consultation and u have the most entrancing voice... i cud sit and listen to u talk anytime :D thanks and keep up the great work (p.s i love the glasses - u are jus so cute *wink*) lol
You can also try applying it with a damp sponge or a damp brush (not soaking wet, just lightly damp). The water should evaporate but also act as a thinning agent, giving you sheerer coverage without affecting the wear time as much as moisturizer.
I can't get over this new intro. >.< Every time you put out a video I have to rewind and watch the intro six or seven times before I can get to the actual content. DAMN YOU AND YOUR CATCHY TUNE!
Depends on whether you want a cream or a liquid. Probably Pro Longwear if you want a liquid and need that higher coverage. Studio Finish if you want a cream.
I watch lots of makeup videos on RUclips and must say that he is one of the most detailed and thorough gurus I have seen!! There was So much good info in this video that I'm about to watch it AGAIN to recap what I've learned!! Thank you for what you do!! :-)
You felt like you were rambling? No way! That was an exceptionally clear, informative video. Try a few random "makeup tutorial" videos- most of them feature a host who seems to have turned on the camera as soon as the thought of making a video struck them. (I especially appreciated the info about amount vs. price.) I'll definitely watch your other videos now. Thanks!
Thanks! :) I've never been one to say "use a concealer lighter than your skintone." Use the concealer that most closely matches your skin... if you're only using concealer to highlight then that's one thing - then use your lighter one for highlighting and the one that matches you for concealing. Re: your dilemma, you can use it as an eyeshadow base or a highlighter, lip erase product, anything really :) I often use concealers as eyeshadow bases though. It's old school but it still works.
Dont ever apologize for rambling. That is one of the reasons we come back for more videos. ;) I had heard the same thing about the Studio Finish and Full Coverage. I am glad you put that debate to rest. I have been using that concealer as an eyeshadow base. I got it because the lightest shade was lighter than any of the paint pots they had, and the MUA said that she does it all the time. I honestly cant see a difference when using it vs. the paint pot. Have you got any opinions on that? :)
Hey Dusty... You're kind of a beauty encyclopedia you know that right? It's unreal how much you have stored in your brain about foundations and concealers. I really hope you do a video on must haves from mac pro, I'm too scared to go in there without a list cuz I would just get distracted by all the pretty things and end up buying 8 blue eyeshadows
When I'm running concealer through brows I never use a liquid, I just think it looks funny - if you're trying to cover up your brow color go with Studio Finish or a flesh colored mascara (MAC PRO makes one called MAC PRO Longlash, Barelash).
It's not the most opaque concealer but it's nice for around the eyes because it's so soft... try a skin corrector underneath the concealer (something pale green) to counteract the redness first (IF the concealer alone doesn't do the trick).
omg, i don't know how you do it, but even if you're not crazy about a product you make it sound good, i always watch your vids when i can pay full attention, i swear, you are a freakin' makeup genius. (i can't tell if it's the lighting or you're hair is darker but i love it) and i loved how the lights in front of you were reflecting in your iris.
When I first saw this video was 15:48 minutes, I was like, "hum...I don't know if I wanna see this right now" But you ALWAYS keep me so entertain.... I LOVE your videos and I think you're so AMAZING!!!! Love you Dustin!
I've used 4 out of 5 of these concealers they are all so different from one another with different qualities and finishes. Thanks for this comprehensive guide, I kept coming back to this and your Mac foundation vid for reference! Thumbs up!
Foundation. I have what I consider to be moderate dark circles and I always use foundation to cover them, there's no reason for someting as heavy as a concealer if you don't need it. Studio Fix Fluid by MAC works well. It's smooth (lots of silicone) and has a fair amount of coverage.
@Adoriakashite the only concealers that have silicone products in them are the ones that i mentioned. as for foundations, the ingredients are listed on the side of all of the boxes. they don't all contain silocone products. look for an ingredient ending in "cone" when you're checking.
You can try using a primer, skipping the moisturizer (or testing a different one), skipping the powder (or testing a different one) - OR any combo of these options. It's all about testing out different methods - often a product will change with body chemistry or times of year as well (basically it's a constant trial and error process). If all else fails, you might just need a different concealer. If it won't work, it just won't work :/
Often you'll use two different concealers - one for under the eyes and one for blemishes. For under the eyes I like the one with the wand applicator in here. Of course, you don't need to buy from MAC (unless your school said that you do), any concealer with silicone will make the under-eye area look smooth though.
I am loving ur 101 style vids. U literally covering everything i was curious about. Im surprised how u leave nothing out. once the video is done i have no questions. GREAT JOB HUN! GREATLY APPRECIATE it.....
We're all different. You'll have to try it yourself to test the staying power. I don't use it for marks on the skin though, I use it mostly for undereye circles and most folks aren't really too oily around the eye area :)
I love your product knowledge and explaining how particular ingredients work. I could watch your videos all day. You are better than so many of MAC consultants/makeup artists I've ever spoken to. Please come to Australia! :-)
Dusty, I just bought prolong wear and studio finish concealers. I have to agree with you that prolong wear gives this tightening feeling around the eyes. It covers better than a lot of the concealers I have but still it didnt cover my circles completely. Studio finish is very drying around my eyes. The only concealer that works is select cover up but it still doesnt cover my dark circles. Thanks so much for sharing the info. Keep up the good work. :)
studio finish concealer will do because it's water resistant, it's coverage is so high mac says that it can cover tattoos, and stays on long but make sure you moisturize first.
You can always go to mac and try it on in store and see which one you like and then purchase.but you should check out the results out of their studio lights.
I've used prolong concealer for two years.. it is true.. at the beginning the pump sucks.. but I promise it gets better.. it is a matter of pressing gently and the product lasts all day long.. it doesnt melt and it photographs perfectly.
what I do with the pro concealer is pumping once in a small jar or container with lid and use it for several days until it finishes, clean and sanitize the jar and do the same... this helps to save a lot of product!
Dusty, your reviews and overviews are the most helpful ones I've seen on youtube! Maybe you could do a comparison between the different MAC eyeshadow, lipstick and lipglass finishes?? That would be nice!
@MakeupBuddie It might help a little but, I generally think that it's better to apply concealer over foundation though. Otherwise you just wipe it off when you apply your foundation.
The one with the "dumb pump" I figured it out basically all you gotta do is use your thumb to push up whilst using your index finger to push down and it will pump like half way there's such little waste after and it will last you forever
@Beautyholicc Re-watch the video and see if any of these pop out at you. The climate you live in (humid or dry summers, etc.) is important but your skin type is also important - Then ask yourself what you are wanting to cover-up. There are only three "liquid" concealers by MAC, so you only have a few to choose from.
Your videos are BRILLIANT!! Very clear, interesting, funny too (loved your remark about your liking of the lid's sound when opening and closing). Will keep an eye on your videos.
My favorite for under the eye is Select Moisturecover. For those kinds of acne marks, I completely agree with you - I usually use something like the ReNutriv concealer from Estée Lauder, which is thick and very creamy - works better for spots like that than something dry :)
I didn't talk about that one because it hadn't launched at the time of the video. This is actually an old video (over a year old I believe) and the Mineralize concealer just launched a few months back.
I think they're equally good, it's more a matter of if you prefer a liquid or a cream. I would say Studio Finish but that's mostly because I prefer to work with cream foundations.
I have no problem at all with the Pro Longwear pump. I purchased it expecting to have to depot it but i'm able to just pump out a tiny (perfect) amount. I place the front side of the pump hard against my knuckle so that the knuckle acts like a 'stopper' and won't allow the pump to go down fast. That way I can completely control the amount of product that comes out.
Can you get samples where you are? That would be my recommendation - so that you can test them out. Pro Longwear does an AMAZING job and lasting and covering well, but for me it's just too heavy for undereye use. Lots of people love it for the eye area though so it absolutely works for that.
@Sycorah It's not the best for non-pro photos, no. Full Coverage Foundation, Studio Fix Powder and Studio Finish Concealer all have the same "Memoirs of a Geisha" effect on the skin. You should be able to match Full Coverage foundation with Studio Finish (since they are pretty much the same product, the shades are the same).
@iheartkaratekid that would most likely be from titanium dioxide in the product (i'm not familiar with it so it's just a guess). you have to be careful with too much powder around the eye area, it can make your eyes look very dry. i tend to not powder at all around the eyes unless i need to.
I have two questions. 1) I have really bad dark circles. What would work best to cover them? 2) Any waterproof make-up that will really stay on while swimming? Thank you so much!
I truly appreciate you doing this (and the review of the MAC foundations) since it really addresses what is missing in youtube. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I don't think you should really NEED to - but test it out one day with and one day without and see if you can tell a difference. This concealer is SO long wearing I don't know how much a little powder will honestly effect it.
With my Pro Longwear concealer I anchor my thumb on the side while I'm pressing down with my index finger. This helps limit the amount of product that is dispensed. It's not completely foolproof, but more often than not it works - sometimes I even get too little product and have to go back to do it again.
You're brilliant! I stumbled over your video by chance and am so glad. Your review is really factual and I like the free-of-giggling-style. Vacation for my ears after having watched tons of RUclips beauty gurus :-) I will definitely watch some more of your vids. Btw, love the cheerful slightly comical music you used in between.
I don't have a lot of dark circles, but I do have some (witch I want to cover) - my main problem though is that I have super dry under eyes... Would select moisturecover be the best? I also struggle with acne, but I have a little dry skin. What would be the best to cover it? :-)
I'm a fairly new subscriber and you are my go to spot for great tips and in depth information about products. Can you do an overview on silicone based products and water based products as in what are the ingredients to watch out for? Or which products are best for which situations? As a new makeup artist I noticed this was information that was not given during my schooling and it's most frustrating when I try to recommend things to people.
Sorry it took me two days to get to this, I've been working a lot. :/ I feel kinda bad after teasing you, with you being sick and all. I hope you're feeling better now. As usual, a wonderful video, I always leave your videos feeling like I have a better grasp of whatever product I'm dealing with than before I started. :)
Unfortunately Studio Sculpt concealer is discontinued and no longer available through MAC. You might be able to find it on-line somewhere but make sure you trust the source. I liked Studio Sculpt a lot so I was disappointed when they got rid of it but... what can you do :/ If I were you I'd venture out away from MAC and look at a couple other brands for concealer. I MOSTLY have experience with Lauder brands (like MAC, etc.) but there are plenty of good ones out there.
ita with your prolongwear gripes about the packaging..i think the issue is the pump keeps the product from drying out, but yes it expels waaaay too much product. like triple what you need!
I don't think it's THAT bad - like I said, it's the same product as their Full Coverage Foundation (and their line of PRO Skin Correctors). Apply with something like a 224 brush for a nicer finish - because you're correct, it IS fairly dry and not as creamy as other cream concealers on the market.
@Shannybabe1000 Bottom lashes? Sounds like the fault might lie with your mascara, not with your concealer. Try switching that instead of shuffling around all those concealing products. Is that a waterproof mascara? Bottom lashes benefit from waterproof mascaras - It helps to prevent transfer.
Great vid Dusty! I've found the same issue with the Pro-longwear concealer- but, I've found a way around this; it's a little time consuming, but with practice it's very simple. When depressing the pump, using multiple and incrementally lighter pressures at the "point of no return" will slowly dispense smaller amounts of the product. Same thing goes for the pump on Benefit's Stay don't Stray eye primer. Hope that helps!
It's hard to say... I'd honestly have to test it out because if I tell you it was fine on MY face, it doesn't mean it will be fine on yours. I don't remember any creasing with this one though.
Fantastic as always - indepth and many questions I had were all answered in one lovely video - I'm a studio sculpt gal and love the sound of the lid also LOL
I bought the ProLongwear 2 months ago because the salesperson recommended it. I love the coverage but hate the pump as well. So I pumped the whole thing into an eye dropper type bottle. Now I am totally happy with it :)
@LittleMissNawtie Gasp! I know right?! But NO! You can't!!! It doesn't unscrew! It's completely stuck to the bottle! My first thought was to unscrew it as well, but that's not how the container works.
The pro-longwear packaging is kinda annoying, but if you hold your finger over the hole while you push the pump down, you can control the amount that's coming out way better.
i would suggest putting the prolongwear in another bottle with a better pump ! way easier that way. btw, love the review. (: thank you for putting so much effort into it !
With the pump products and the problem with them pumping out too much I hold my finger over the opening and gently pump and it holds a lot of product back:)
I recently got the Pro Longwear concealer and I agree that the pump is a pain. I try to control it but sometimes it just dispenses a lot. What I do is I blend it with my moisturiser. It's still a lot of product that could cover my whole face. I do like the coverage though. Great review. Thanks! :)
love the opening! just in time for i am planning to check out mac concealers but with all the ranges that they have, i don't know what to get. i love your channel! ^_^ keep up the good work & more power~!
@adiielena just like i said in the video: moisturecover - if you're fine with silicone-based products. it's great for dry or mature skin and specifically for under the eye area.
@BeautyLuV83 Try "repairing" the scar with Vitamin E oil (it's inexpensive). Just to soften the scar a little bit - You'll need to maintain that, probably at night... for... ever? For awhile anyway. Other than that, I'd suggest trying a different concealer, get a sample of a few kinds (even a sample of Studio Finish just to make sure yours isn't "bad") and try them out to see how they look.
is there any way of taking the lid/pump off to get access? then you could maybe stick a palette knife/spatula down to get a smaller amount of product? or maybe decant? I know it would be fussy but better than throwing money away! Food for thought Mr O'Hunter. :)
@cheetahpita it is discontinued - has been for about a year or so actually (though many stores still have it in stock). unfortunately i don't own any of the studio sticks so i can't say how they compare to any of the other products :/
Omg. I'm so happy to have found you. Your videos are exactly what I've been looking for. Finally, someone that actually breaks it down and compares the diff between all the available choices. And talks intelligently and knowledgeably about them. Thank you. You have found a subscriber for life. Keep them coming.
This guy has a great personality.. Nice to hear him talk. Very knowledgable! Thanks buddy!!
I’m watch all your videos again Dustin, just because of how soothing, informative and just incredibly intelligent and wonderful you are! I feel like I’m sitting down and listening to a really good friend who’s comforting me with a cup of tea. I’ve just missed these so much.

A solution I found to the problem of wasting product with the prolong wear is I squirt 3-4 pumps into a small container, I use an empty gel eyeliner container and that way when I put those 3-4 pumps in, I can ensure I use all of the product

lid & jar noise = makeup nerd heaven.
Thank you for affirming that that noise is AWESOME.
i cannot express how thankful i am for this video, i'm a new MAC artist n eventhough i have gone through the MAC product handbook, your personal review is so enriching and i feel like you're my trainer (cos my basic school's not until march 2013)

You might have rambled but I happily listened to every word... Love you Dustin!
Depends on whether you want a cream or a liquid. Probably Pro Longwear if you want a liquid and need that higher coverage. Studio Finish if you want a cream.
you are so well-spoke, you speak clearly, slowly, and eloquently. I subbed after coming here to see a review of select cover up :)

lol I love the sound of the glass lid as well. I even deemed it the "paint pot sound". Great video- thanks for posting!
i LOVE the sound the studio sculpt jar makes when you open it too!

@AliceBingham Yes, go with the Studio Sculpt instead and Pro Longwear is a good foundation. It photographs well and lasts a long time.
+Kemmi Crosby at first I had the same problem but I love it
YOU'RE THE BEST!
I've been looking for a good mac concealer comparison video and this just came sent from heaven!
@neonm402 I'd say so... Mostly because it dries down better and can be layered easier. Moisturcover stays kind of soft and "moist."
@Torneh i haven't. i am gathering together an illamasqua order for next month hopefully - i hadn't planned on trying foundations yet though.
@Beautyholicc Re-watch the video and see if any of these pop out at you. Idea! Pump the ProLongwear into a little sample jar as you need it so you can use up the other two thirds of the pump over the next couple of days!
Welcome back! we missed your reviews ant tips and tricks!
;)
I have no problem at all with the Pro Longwear pump. I purchased it expecting to have to depot it but i'm able to just pump out a tiny (perfect) amount. I absolutely love this kind of videos of yours! Hopefully we'll see a Mac brush guide soon? (please say yes!)
Super helpful videos :) I love the foundation video too!
@Sycorah It's not the best for non-pro photos, no. Full Coverage Foundation, Studio Fix Powder and Studio Finish Concealer all have the same "Memoirs of a Geisha" effect on the skin. You should be able to match Full Coverage foundation with Studio Finish (since they are pretty much the same product, the shades are the same).
this video helped me a lot. I have been using the pro long wear concealer for many years but think I'm going to try out the studio finish concealer.
Thank you so much!
i loved your glasses....looks so good on you!!
Dustin, your review was so informative and immensely adorable.
I'm so subscribing now
I truly appreciate you doing this (and the review of the MAC foundations) since it really addresses what is missing in youtube. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Any one of these. Concealers and foundations don't really go together like a matched set. Choose them separately depending on what your needs are.
I don't think you should really NEED to - but test it out one day with and one day without and see if you can tell a difference. This concealer is SO long wearing I don't know how much a little powder will honestly effect it.
OMG, i loved the way u talked about the pro longwear , your voice was so deep ! :)
With my Pro Longwear concealer I anchor my thumb on the side while I'm pressing down with my index finger. This helps limit the amount of product that is dispensed. It's not completely foolproof, but more often than not it works - sometimes I even get too little product and have to go back to do it again.
@PindyFLove13 Yes but depending on how dark and what color they are, a skin corrector will go a long way in helping as well.
You're brilliant! I stumbled over your video by chance and am so glad. Your review is really factual and I like the free-of-giggling-style. Vacation for my ears after having watched tons of RUclips beauty gurus :-)
I will definitely watch some more of your vids.
:-)
Pro Longwear has a dumb pump but it does last a looong time. Pick up a sample and see what you think :)
@UBadMuse You're welcome so much! :) I'm glad everyone has found these kinds of videos so helpful... They are fun to do and I plan on doing more :)
I would listen to you talking all day, every day x
ita with your prolongwear gripes about the packaging..i think the issue is the pump keeps the product from drying out, but yes it expels waaaay too much product. like triple what you need!
this is by far the best review video i have seen on youtube. awesome!
Your videos are always very professional and honest
Thxs for sharing your knowledge !
Really helpful video thanks! I'm torn between the 1st and 2nd product.
^_^
keep up the good work
& more power~!
