NC and NW don't refer to light and dark. It's the number that follows that does. Example: NC20 is lighter than NC45 - also NW20 is lighter than NC30 - etc. At MAC "NC" means a more yellow-based foundation and "NW" means a more pink-based one; nothing to do with light and dark. Hope that helps!
I would like to thank you for helping me with my make up. I love how you explain everything And you make things fun! The information you give is sooo good! I think I love you ;) I've been buying so much foundation in the last 2 weeks and now i can stop thanks to you. It's really hard to find foundation for dark skin. But with your help i learned how to make things work and i thank YOU!!!
I watched you first time and I really enjoyed you video, also noticed you reply all the viewer to me honest not all gurus on you tube does that really appreciate ..!!! I am totally lost because I have watched lots of video and totally confused now, I am really dry on sides of nose, oily at front line of nose and slightly oily on cheeks.I watched you first time and I really enjoyed you video, also noticed you reply all the viewer to me honest not all gurus on you tube does that really appreciate
Bravo! I've been trying to tell people that just because a 'guru' says he/she thinks its great does not mean diddly squat for you. Many factors contribute to a foundations wear & stay and you've said it beautifully. Thank you, I look forward to the MAC foundation reviews. Your recent subscriber, Marlene :)
I LOVE your videos! You're so informative and I really appreciate that. MAC and MUFE foundations are the only ones that have ever matched perfectly. I'm an NW20 with a somewhat uneven skin tone. As of now, I'm using Studio Sculpt, but I'd like to try the Pro Longwear. If I had to vote, I think that MUFE Mat Velvet+ works best for me. Even though my skin gets really dry, it never irritated it and this foundation gave me the best coverage.
@erinnyon If you think your foundation is washing you out and making you look paler than you think you should be, you could try contouring and/or bronzing. BUT if your foundation really is too pale for you, then by all means, try something darker. I tend to bounce around several different shades in the NC/NW 15-20 region.
@Graciegunn Translucent powder generally means it's just a transparent setting powder (meaning it deposites no color on the skin, just sets and mattefies the foundation). In the second part (which I'm editing RIGHT NOW and should have it up later today) I talk more about each foundation individually. For a dewy finish though, I prefer MAC's Face & Body. It doesn't need to be set with powder and looks fantastic (without the shimmer that Mineralize Satin Finish has).
OMG! thank you!!! I needed help on searching and finding that right shade! I have such a hard time! I always feel like I get the wrong shade : / I have various Mac foundations, all different tones, and I personally thought their was something wrong with me, but your also right about the tanning and stuff. lol I LOOVE you! lol can't wait for the next vid for these series! :D
@LittleMissNawtie That's too bad. Here the rule is once a cosmetic item has been returned, it must be destroyed. Other than that, it's up to the store or manufacturer's return policy. Some stores have a strict "no returns on open product" policy but most will take returns no problem. MAC has a nice, no questions asked, 90-day return policy if you purchase directly from them.
@happybadfish the reason they are saying that is because mac foundations are formulated to work with your undertones - and yellow doesn't counteract pink. they would tell you to look at something with a green tint (there are some primers that will work) if they sold something like that. you'll still have to just try stuff out though. nw foundations dry down to yellow on my skin - i have to custom blend mac foundations to work for my skintone if i want an exact match. hope that helps! :)
Brilliant! I've been waiting for this series from you since you mentioned you were doing it. I know I'm not alone in finding MAC staff intimidating so it will be nice to go in there with a reasonable idea of what I want. I love your commitment to this channel by the way. When are you releasing your album?
@eeli1 MY general rule of foundation is: if you don't need it, don't use it. I like the look of bare skin (even bare skin with lipstick and eyeshadow - I think it looks cool)! If your skin changes dramatically though, I would recommending getting a shade that matches you at your darkest, and one that matches you at your lightest, then blending the two in various amounts to match yourself perfectly year-round :)
@LissaFrutilla lol Thank you! And that's exactly how I test foundation. I'm a visual artist - I understand undertones and color and I STILL end up just having to try stuff on. Often a foundation will blend out differently than it does when you first put it on too... Something else to keep in mind. It may look yellow at first, then blend beautifully and match perfectly.
@Graciegunn I think that MAC has more OPTIONS than any other brand I've come across - And the amount of colors they make is outstanding so you can often match a skintone rather well (even if you have to mix a little bit - I'm often in-between shades). I use MAC foundations for daily wear and photo/video shoots. BUT "best" is a subjective term. At this very moment I'm in mad love with Chanel's Pro Lumiere (it's just a little on the spendy side for including in a whole kit). :)
@cicekly I'm quite pale as well... I personally love the look of MAC's Face & Body in WHITE. Looks great on the skin - If you have sensitive skin I'm not sure how you would react though. I don't have trouble with it personally but everyone is different.
@makeupbynicolemarie This is strictly my opinion BUT... If you're doing ANYTHING that will be seen in front of a camera lens, MAC's Studio Fix Fluid all the way. It's known for photographing beautifully (even though it has an SPF, which is strange, usually you're supposed to stear clear of foundations with an SPF for photos). I love it though, medium-full coverage, satin-matte finish and long lasting. Looks great on the skin! :)
@DeziredBeauty You're welcome and thank YOU! :) I don't actually know for sure (I'm a PC guy). I don't see why it wouldn't be compatible though. I think I'd be the video editing software that you'd want to worry about. It does record in an odd file format though - It's unique to the JVC - which can be kind of a pain in the ass. But the quality is nice!
@lily318 Thank you! I'm glad it's helpful! I know it's a long video with lots of other "attachment" videos but I have been wanting to do this for awhile. When I first got into MAC foundations I remember being so confused! There's so many and I had no clue what they all did!
I don't think silicone is bad at all. There are lots of arguments on either side of the issue so I always just tell people to make up there own mind. Unless you have an allergy, it shouldn't be an issue in my opinion. Personally I LOVE silicone in products - it's what makes the skin smooth looking. Studio Fix Fluid is a great foundation but it can oxidize on oily skin (turn orange or dark), I recommend getting a sample and wearing it for a day to see what you think :)
"no I'm not!" ahaha!! I say it like that too... but in the store. I have yet to find my "perfect" foundation so I'm looking forward to the future videos. Love the work you do... keep it up!
@TheSlb789 i don't know what policy is but the stores i've been to, it applies to everything that they can easily do samples of (eyeshadow, eyeliner or lipliner - for example - are kind of hard to do samples of).
Have you used silicone products before? Does it scare you because you're worried what it would do or have you had bad experiences with it? I personally like it and think it helps the skin look it's best. I've never personally seen someone break out from it unless they had a specific allergy.
It's definitely a heavier foundation. I only ever use mineral foundations on myself and then, maybe once or twice a year. I can tell which ones I like but in general, I don't like mineral foundations. It's personal preference though. Bare Minerals IMO is just "okay." I like the one by Youngblood (full coverage though) and Terra Firma Cosmetics (they make my favorite one). I test EVERYTHING I use with photos before a shoot (and I really only every use Studio Fix Fluid for photos).
@CmdrBittles For an exact match in MAC foundation, I'm almost ALWAYS in-between shades (usually a mix of cool and warm like NC15+NW20). I think most people fall in-between shades like that.
@MACjunkie1978 LOL! First: Thank you! Second: I have the Invisable setting powder but I never use it. The Prep + Prime Invisable powder is the better of the two - But personally speaking I prefer MAC's Blot Powder over any other set powder I've ever used (I like it pressed, but that's just me, if you like loose, they make a loose version of it).
Totally off the subject but, I love your glasses! What brand and style are they? They look like a deeper version of my Ray Bans. Great overview. Thanks!
@twitternut Very soon! I'm not releasing physical copies until it's available on iTunes and unfortunately iTunes can take their sweet time in processing... But soon! Thanks for asking!!! :)
@dustyohunter no way you should have left it in thats so cool im super nerdy too cant wait to see season 6. My boyfriend is hooked on it too. Anyway as ive said before you are the yoda of muas keep the vids and great tweets coming love ya
Thank you :) I understand what you're saying - that's why I have different foundations for different tasks (and different people). Personally speaking, I've had wonderful luck with Terra Firma's Mineral Foundation (search for Terra Firma Cosmetics, they're an indie company) lasting ALL DAY and looking fabulous. Not what I'd photo in or send out on stage but a wonderful every day one - Same with MAC's Face & Body. That's a great one to wear to the gym - it doesn't even sweat off :)
@makeupbynicolemarie Aw you're very welcome! :) Pro Longwear might be a good one to look at too - Especially for the longevity factor (I still like Studio Fix Fluid though! lol!)
Working on the Lauder version of my huge MAC foundation guide :) I picked up my last one a few weeks ago (their Re-Nutriv Liquid). Testing, testing, testing and then a video. I'm also working on an update for my MAC one - it needs to be re-done with new products :) Re: Chanel. OMG that was a fiasco. I actually filmed the series on those last year but my camera broke and I lost the files, then they discontinued 3 of their foundations and replaced them with new ones. BAH! In the end I gave up LOL
@DeziredBeauty You can KIND of see the camera for a quick sec in one of my VLOG videos (I think it's the third one called, "An Impromptu Tour" or something like that lol). I'm using a Flip to record that video but show the JVC briefly.
@TheSlb789 I have that same skin type and I use studio fix due to the oily skin problem I have going on. I found a good product that MAC gave me a sample and I bought! Its called MAC Prep and Prime Skin refined zone treatment . This stuff is wonderful if you have oily skin, well at least it works for me and it helps to keep my foundation on longer. Try it! Also try MAC pro long wear concealer with the studio fix, they work great together!
Ohhhhh, Dustin!! My favorite (and yes, I mean that) MUA on RUclips! Quick question for you: I use on a daily basis, MACs Full Coverage (No playin games, I want everything covered!) but I am really wondering if you think it would be worth it for me to shell out the money for the MAC 'Invisible' setting powder? To date, I have used that cheap stuff from CODY and it works for me, so is the MAC setting powder SO great that it warrants buying? Say yes, and I swear I will buy it today! Thanks Hon!
@JeEnyUs608 I was really hoping to - I had a few planned out and even tried to film one but I just ran out of time this year. We're remodeling AND I'm moving my studio - It's all exciting but it's taken a lot of time and energy. I'll probably do some in the winter or spring just for fun though! Hehe :)
i adore your vids and i adore your tweets and im so jealous that you are watching season 6 of supernatural and ive to wait until after christmas for it to arrive in ireland. Im having serious winchester withdrawls
Dusty, great video! You put a lot of time into this. Thanks! I am an NW 15/NC15 in MAC. Do you find that this company tends to put more yellow in both color ranges than others? I do better with a neutral color range. So far the only one in MAC I can make work is Face and Body because they have a N color range. I am forced into other companies. I can't wear yellow in my found. (red hair, sl. pink toned, eyes just like yours, light green) Best Video currently out there on topic. Any thoughts
@dustyohunter Thats interesting, thanks for all the information. I'm looking to get a new HD camera and there's just so much to choose from, I don't know which one to get! I'll go check out this one too, since it looks so nice ; )
@MasOvaltinePls Haha! I do that too actually. I'm a bastard that way. That's how I went shopping for MSFs and Mineralize Blushes. I bought them all, tried them for a week and returned what I didn't want.
I subbed to you..I think you are so informale.....I am new to MAC but this year I got my 1st cupull of things from MAC, and when you say try it on, I would agree because alot of them will say ohh your NW45 because Im african amercian, But not every african american has a red or orange under tone. I am a NW45 but when I went to MAC with my sis thats what the rep that worked tell her just by looking and come to fine out she was wrong. My sis has a yellow under tone. :)
@CalicoCatMissPeachs It's funny how different skin types take to foundations so differently. I find that MAC's NW colors turn very yellow on me, the NC's look better but can look grey and "stone-ish" unless I blend them with a little NW. Lately I've been wearing Chanel's Pro Lumiere which goes on me like mustard - TOTALLY yellow! But then it blends to a near perfect match. Strange. I don't know if any of that helps but those are my thoughts right now at 7am! LOL! Probably time for bed, huh? Hah!
Thank you and yes you should be able to ask for a sample and not get the stink eye when you do. It's just poor training. Not every store/employee is like that but unfortunately it's happened often enough to kind of become a stereotype of the brand. Keep trying though! I have met some of the sweetest people and made some good friends in MAC employees over the years :)
i´m agree with the video. It is a pain to find a makeup that match the color of my skin because even the lightest shade is dark for me...i´m wearing nw15 and that kind of "works" but if you have any suggestion (any brand) please let me know...btw my skin is sensitive acne prone!!! thx... :)
@vampiresiren2 Haha! One of these videos had an outtake where Jay texted me - If I left it in you'd see what HUGE nerds we are because he's in my phone as Dean and the voice announces, "Message from Dean Winchester." LOL!
i am an NC20 but i recently found out that this shade makes me look pale even though it's a perfect match with my neck/chest! what should i do? i thought about going up a shade (NC25)
I've only recently begun using skincare of any kind for the first time in my life. I love it. I don't know where it's been all my life. Foundation continues to be a scary thing for me because my skin can change color so dramatically. I'm part native american so my skin can go from a light tan to a fairly dark brown which has left me wondering . .is it even worth it buy foundation? I love the look, but so much money. :/
I'm Asian and have EXTREMELY yellow undertones (to the point that I would almost describe my skin as greenish-weird right). The NC's are too orange for me! It's funny because lots of people complain about the NARS sheer glow being too yellow, but for me it's too pink :(. What should I do? I can never get any foundation to match me
You have the best in depth yet to the point reviews..just found you and I'm amazed you don't have a "gazillion" subscribers.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you have found the videos helpful! You are right as well: cool and warm undertones exist in all skin shades :)
I would like to thank you for helping me with my make up. I love how you explain everything And you make things fun! The information you give is sooo good! I think I love you ;) I've been buying so much foundation in the last 2 weeks and now i can stop thanks to you. It's really hard to find foundation for dark skin. I enjoy all of your videos. Very straight forward and informational. Thanks for sharing!
I watched you first time and I really enjoyed you video, also noticed you reply all the viewer to me honest not all gurus on you tube does that really appreciate ..!!!

I'm new to your channel, and so far I am loving your videos :)
OMG, I just watched you video for the first time and I love you!! You are very knowledge and your sense of humor is awesome!! I'm a new subscriber!
Great and informative video Dusty. "You're probably a Vulcan" loved that :-) Lovely to see you, looking forward to the next.
I wish I could like this video a million times. so educational and fun to watch!
Thanks so much for this series Dusty, it's been super helpful! And entertaining, as always :)
Love your videos. Excellent explanation.
Your glasses are so shiny!!! Can't wait for the reviews!!!
I have NEVER watched a more helpful RUclips video.Including the how-to on CPR lol//and I 'lol'ed at the face-face joke. Your too cute! I'm subbed :)
BEST overview I've seen on youtube (and I've seen a lot)
I believe I talk about that in the review for the foundation and absolutely for the concealer overview video - I know I mentioned it there.
Can't wait for your review-a-thon. I'm always tempted to buy a MAC foundation but there are too many choices and colors and I get overwhelmed!
@CmdrBittles For an exact match in MAC foundation, I'm almost ALWAYS in-between shades (usually a mix of cool and warm like NC15+NW20). I think most people fall in-between shades like that.
Thanks! I have videos on here for Tom Ford and Illamasqua right now. I'm always testing foundations and working on new videos just like this one :)
thank you for this vid, everyone should watch this! its a basic or "foundation " for learning makup application!

My skin is kind of backwards... It's DRY in the t-zone and oily on my cheeks and jawline...
Loved the Vulcan reference, btw. Made my day!

@MsFreshkiss Tag! I took 4 years of German in high school and that's seriously ALL I can remember. LOL! ;) Thanks for the comment! :)
@DeziredBeauty It's a JVC Everio HD7U
Amen!!!! I love this video!!! Your the best!!! Can I be your guest on your show hehehehe
@dustyohunter
Thanks, I'll watch the video. A flip seems essential too, probably should get one for easy random recordings.

such a great to the point informative video. thankyou! you are a god sent. have subscribed

For the record you are totally awesome. I hate MAC foundations but I enjoy your videos so I watched the whole thing lol ;)

Absolutely Brilliant vids. Thank you Dusty x

thanks soo much!! your videos are so helpful!!
Love you. Don't love Mac foundations, but love you.
"if you have green veins, then you're probably a vulcan" xD
Like always your videos crack me up, but you always get the message across ;]
You're Awesome really enjoy your videos :-) just got a job at Mac and have so much to learn! Thanks, really helpful info :-)

I can't wear yellow in my found. (red hair, sl. pink toned, eyes just like yours, light green) Best Video currently out there on topic. Any thoughts
You're my hero. Nuff said.
Nice, now I need to now if mac brasil also has the sane policy, cause Iam dying to find a foundation the really fits my skin .....thanks !
@dustyohunter
Thats interesting, thanks for all the information. I'm looking to get a new HD camera and there's just so much to choose from, I don't know which one to get! I'll go check out this one too, since it looks so nice ; )
YEAH I LOVEEEEE this guy !! :) Thank youuuu
@MasOvaltinePls Haha! I do that too actually. I'm a bastard that way. That's how I went shopping for MSFs and Mineralize Blushes. I bought them all, tried them for a week and returned what I didn't want.
Ah yes/and an extra 1,000,000 cool points to you for referencing To Wong Foo! RIP PSchwayze!!
@colorama91 LOL! :) Thank you! I needed the "SCHNELL" too as I'm rushing to get the second half of this uploaded in the next few hours! LOL!
I love your videos!
Hah!
@mirandaisgross No don't! That would suck.
great video, once again!
GOD BLESS U AND THIS VIDEO...im so subscribing,,,where have u been my whole life. lol.
One of these videos had an outtake where Jay texted me - If I left it in you'd see what HUGE nerds we are because he's in my phone as Dean and the voice announces, "Message from Dean Winchester." LOL!
so wish id have seen this before i went to a mac counter for the 1st time today...
Thank u so much, very clear , very informative
@lizzycify You're welcommmmmm! :)
@dustyohunter
Thank you, do you happen to know if its compatible with a Mac?
i am an NC20 but i recently found out that this shade makes me look pale even though it's a perfect match with my neck/chest! what should i do? i thought about going up a shade (NC25)
Great info thx!!
It kinda raises the question of: "what the purpose of shopping on the Mac website", if your persistently having to go back and get re-tested?
I'm Asian and have EXTREMELY yellow undertones (to the point that I would almost describe my skin as greenish-weird right). The NC's are too orange for me! It's funny because lots of people complain about the NARS sheer glow being too yellow, but for me it's too pink :(. What should I do? I can never get any foundation to match me
Ahh I love your videos :D
Luv it!! You are so easy to listen to. Very pleasant and totally make sense... Very informative.
