Great video. I’ve only been keeping ball pythons for about a year, but I fell into the trap of “tubs aren’t good enough for my animal”. After fighting humidity and feeding issues I got a 5 tub rack and put my hatchlings into 6 qt tubs. Not a single one has refused food since or had a stuck shed! LISTEN TO THE EXPERTS PEOPLE!

I have a 2018 female Blood Python from NERD. I researched the conditions she would need before buying her. Kevin's videos and information on interaction and understanding my snake were wonderful. Camilla, my Matrix, is a beautiful snake companion who never refuses her rodent. If your snake is unhappy, he or she may not have the right conditions and be uncomfortable. I still have a lot to learn and Kevin is a great teacher.

VERY important video, Kevin. People don't remember that the animal they got came from a very specific setup that is very different from what most pet stores recommend. To ignore where the animal came from, regardless of whether you agree with that way of keeping or not, is a disservice to the animal.

When I got my first snake she wouldn't eat at first. My first question was basically "what should I do to get her eating?" She was very nervous at first (which was most likely why she wouldn't eat), but now she's a great eater, unless she's in shed, she will eat.

I like to spend a lot of time learning about animals. I have no particular expertise with snakes. But I think in general animals don't like to eat when they have just been moved to a new home. They are trying to figure out a new environment.
As far as housing goes. I believe there is more than one correct way to house most animals. Keeping snakes in plastic bins is one correct way. But if I had one I would have a more...... Decorative enclosure, kind of like what you would see at a zoo. I think part of the appeal of having a reptile is because it becomes part of the decoration of your home. Of course, I wouldn't sacrifice the well being of the animal. I would provide it with places to hide so it feels safe.

But I am happy with my pretty boy!!

It can be tricky to create a nice enclosure for display that is right for the animals well being. Tubs and racks genuinely make it much easier to dial in parameters.
In many cases the elaborate display is driven by the owners desire for a nice asthetic than the animals well being.

My BP is 10 months old and 551g, he feeds on a 60g rat every week. He doesn't refuse feeds unless "in the blue" but I'm worried he's not as "thick" as these ones. Am I doing something wrong or am I just worrying as a first time snake mom?

  • @prindizzlefoshizzle

These "customers" are exactly as you say... ignorant. I love reptiles and snakes sooo much but, I know that I'm not capable of giving the animal optimal care to thrive base on my extensive research and thru RUclipsrs like you and BHB. So, I don't have one because above all, it's about the animal first.

I just got my first ball 4 days ago, and after he thawed out from being shipped , he turned into a snake that I thought was going to live in perpetual strike mode. And it has been a little intimidating (actually alot). I did all the research...watched all the videos but never saw anything addressing a VERY defensive snake. So I took a different approach and listened to everything you have ever said in regards to the intelligence of these animals and the respect they should be given. So I talk to him everyday, he gets a half hour of soft nature music a day, he gets his space, he likes his tub set up and the last two days I was able to pet him a little him without him tensing up, and that is only the first four days. I will not pick him up until he is ready...he'll let me know when. He is two months old, and I adore him, so thank you for getting us through the first four days...the rest will come easy. His first feeding will be Thursday so that is what brought me here.

Sometimes it has to do with the animal being in a new home, a new environment, a new enclosure, new smells, it can be very overwhelming for any snake.
So the first thing a snake will want is not food, it’s security.
Here’s a bit humor of what a snake may be thinking, enjoy…
“WFT just happened?! I was in my long box, the giant who normally feeds me picks me up, places me in a round thing & then in the dark where I could spend all day in. Then suddenly there is this bright light & giants surrounding me, took me out of my comfortable round thing and places me in the this long, wide thing that looks nothing like my home! It’s a jungle & the giants look in at me from the sides of the jungle, where when I try to crawl through I bumped into it and it’s so scary! Oh look a log, a dark tunnel! Yes, there is a hiding place! *crawls into tunnel* It’s warmer in here than in the round thing !”
I hope you enjoy the tidbit of humor, please remember snakes, like all creatures (including humans) need time to adjust in their new home.
    Peace

How long before the reptile might be comfortable enough to put into a tank? Or would you recommend just keeping them in a tub permanently? I just started getting a 10 gallon tank set up so I can eventually buy a baby ball python but I didnt realize that it might not be the ideal setup for it.

Some new snake keepers also try to feed theyre snakes like when they first arrive or 3 days after, they need time to adjust to the new environment and explore the enclosure and yea i dont like when people just put ball pythons in a huge glass tank with a basking light cause you cant control the temp of it like you can a heat mat.

    • @ilovepinklemonade1620
      @ilovepinklemonade1620 3 года назад

Like you have to understand and have patience with them because they literally just got ripped from the place theyve known since they were born and traveled a long way to be put in somewhere totally different, i wouldnt wanna eat either! Literally it just takes time just let the snake chill out for a couple weeks and adjust then it will most likely eat.

I'm loving your videos and learning so much every video you put up I'm also wanting to buy my first snake, I could go out now and buy one but I feel like I dont know enough to buy one yet and i feel like this is what people who wants to purchase animals are doing wrong they are not doing enough research or even have enough passion for animals before actually thinking if they really want to own a animal as animals take a huge responsibility. This is why I'm making sure I gain enough information and research before I do purchase my first snake, I've even gone as far as going to my local reptile stores and asking to handle there snakes so I can get a little experience on that side of stuff aswell and I have probably done there head in with the amount of questions I've asked as all I want is the very best for the snake I choose to purchase when I decide I feel like I'm ready
Keep up the hard work Kevin and team you are definitely a inspiration to alot of people including myself and I'm all the way in United kingdom

I’ve always had a rule that I do not bother a new animal for at least 5 days I only put water in the tank and make sure the animals environment is correct. Never have had an issue with feeding unless the new animal was already off food prior to me getting the animal. (All of these scenarios were because the female wanted to find a mate so it was not eating until I paired her then she pounded food.

  • @taeviansworldofreptiles3828

First of all trying to feed a snake two days after it arrives could its self be the problem. I like to let my snake get into the new space and remain untouched or bothered for at least a week before attempting to feed. If a snake comes looking that good in size there is no damn way I would think the snake not feeding has anything to do with the breeder I got them from. They were clearly getting fed just fine before they came to me. Smh it is a damn shame this has to even be explained....
I do however put my blood on a soil like substrate but that's a choice of giving a more naturalistic enclosure that doesnt mean I dont think it could thrive juuust fine on a paper set up like that.

Yeah... This is pretty normal for most animals going to new homes. It takes them a while to chill out and eat. Sometimes they won't go to the bathroom right away. You just have to be patient. They have no clue what's going on. They're being taken from somewhere they've known their entire life until the point you bring them home. If someone did that to me. I probably wouldn't eat either or poop either.

They big thing is getting their feed and shed schedule from the seller it helps to keep them on the schedule they're used to. (Ppl at the reptile store said I'm the only person who has ever asked for the schedule but they were happy I did!) They have to have time to get comfortable with the change of environment. I got my last BP at 3 months old. He was in like a plastic carrying tank about 8"x6" (inside of a bigger glass display enclosure for the baby BPs) at the store....he's in a 40 Gal tank now. I put his tank right next to my bed (at first) he got a big thing of water (so I wouldnt need to bother him) I put the container he came in from the pet store in his new tank with him...kept everything how he was transported....covered the tank with a towel so everything was dark...he could peak out at the very bottom and only about a 4 inch space on one side of the tank. Put him by our bed so he could smell us see us only when he got up the nerve to. I waited 2 weeks to feed him. 1.5 yrs later this dude is 2.5 ft longer n double the width he was when I bought him lol. My lil chunky butt

When you get your snake as the person selling it the snake last time it ate and when you should attempt to feed. I bought mine form Wilhelm and they were very straight forward and told me to feed in 4-5 days. and I waited. And my snake took his first meal as a champ and no complaints. Asking simple question tend to get the answers you need. Still love your snakes I am currently looking at your blood pythons.

It’s the same way with tuning cars. A lot of the time issues are on the customers end. Whether they install parts incorrectly or lie to the tuner about the parts that are on the vehicle, or even faulty parts or parts that aren’t as good as other parts. The first person they blame is the tuner. Then they go of Facebook and blast the tuner when the tunes for their combination is vetted and dialed in perfectly. But it’s the tuners fault somehow..

I am re-entering the world and have gathered that the ball python tends to be the go to large snake of choice for first time snake keepers. My worry is all of the mentions of them by being picky eaters. Is this a legitimate enough concern that should sway me more the direction of a boa? Intention with the animal would also include eventually being handled by a child which is why I have crossed Burmese and retic off my list of considerations.

Serenity Wilson well if it settles in smoothly maybe four days is safe. If it ignores the food right off take it out and wait several dates. Watch to see if it is acting hungry too. Sitting with its head out of a hide box or looking like it’s waiting g to ambush something are obvious signs.

Surely any snake that’s environment has changed, due to going to a new home won’t feel like eating straight away. Everything will be strange to it and food might not be it’s priority right away. Why are people so stupid to presume it’s you or the snake?

could it be because the snake has been conditioned to live in a tiny tank with no exercise for all his life until you buy it? sorry to point this out , only my opinion.

Yeah man snakes need to get out and hit the gym. Especially big heavy bodied borrowers like ball and short tail/blood pythons
They hate living comfortably in a secure environment
They need enrichment and walks in the sunshine and shit... because feelings

Agreed that it's the "customer's" fault on some degree, although the "seller" should also be helping them in initializing those "parameters" by at least mentioning the conditions those snakes were kept in previously so that they can be "eased-in" their new home.
If the new owner of a snake notices that it's really stressed out in this amazing bioactive enclosure they put it in and they don't really know why, it's natural that they would probably ask the person who they got it from for hints. Now if people are outright blaming you publicly or whatever, then your point is stronger, although if it's just worried people contacting you and asking you for advice after they bought an animal from you, then you're just a douchebag for making a video essentially mocking them and just expecting them to know everything there is from the start, especially when you're dealing with ball pythons; the most commonly recommended snake for beginners (and notorious for sometimes not eating).
