Went to a reptile show with a breeder who was showing off his cow retic rescue. 12’ male, puppy dog tame. I was scared of him grabbing my face or something, but he was so gentle. Instantly changed my mind handling that animal.

Great info, love both my retics and burms. I grew up reading horror stories about retic keeping. I think Ralph Davis mentioned leaving a big walk in enclosure and the retic nailing him. I was terrified of them all while keeping boas and burms. So thankful I got into retics specifically small locality stuff. They have become my favorite snake to keep. Thanks Kevin

Thanks for this, so over hearing about this and the misinformation about the retics especially. Sure wild caught can be alittle more on the defensive but captive bred are now mellowing out and you treat them nice they will do the same.

Reticulated Pythons make wonderful pet snakes when treated with respect. I own 2 Sub-Adult 3 year old female Reticulated Pythons I've raised and a 4 foot male Tiger Retic. I believed retics were mean before I bought my own PET RETICS! I also owned 4 Burmese pythons and African Rocks.

I agree with you 100%! Garret Hartle recently did a video about how Retics have actually been selectively bred over the generations to be more docile and that the current captive bred ones are much less defensive than the F1 and F2s that were newly introduced in the pet trade. In addition to the animals' own experience with humans I think there is a certain amount of cellular memory that must have been bred out over time and that we really have domesticated these animals, not only with how they are treated individually, but in our breeding of them in the long-term. In addition to selecting for better pets, the further away from the wild-caught we get them the less inborn fear they have of humans.

Great information and setting a couple of records straight. Always hear about the Burns and respiratory issues, but still love an albino Burm. Have learned to love Retics more through great breeders such as yourself.

My retic is the sweetest animal on the face of the Earth she's even sweeter than my son's ball python so yes you are correct that is all nonsense it depends on their attitude and how they're raised granite mine is a rescue and she is so happy to be rescued but she's six and a half foot of pure love. ❤️

Great information Kevin. In my opinion, any snake that has been abused in some way can be hard to cope with. The snakes aren't trying to be rotten when they're treated respectfully.
I have 7 ball pythons & one of them that I adopted is kind of a shit when it comes to feeding time. She absolutely will drill you if you're not careful. 😂 I love her, but man... her feeding response can be something else!

I just found this video as I was looking up retic and Burmese size, any snake like any animal including dogs, can be defensive/aggressive if mistreated, if you care for them, handle them a lot (with snakes) they can and do become super mellow, I want a tree python and a carpet python at some point and I am going to handle them early on so hopefully they become chill

Ive kept all of those species for years and still keep all of them except for green tree pythons. Retics are definitely the most fun to be totally honest with you. If you can get a male retic with lots of dwarf and or super dwarf blood, id go for that. Thats just my 2 cents. I have nothing but good things to say about carpet pythons, green tree pythons, and burmese pythons, but retics are just something else. I was pretty shocked how different they were when I 1st started keeping them. I regret not getting into them earlier. Honestly they had a terrible rep when I got into the hobby, and I let that scare me away from them for too long. Obviously do your research and all of that to make sure its right for you, but id definitely at least take dwarf or superdwarf retics into consideration. Carpets and green trees are cool too though. Dont let anyone tell you they are as smart as a retic though lol. They certainly make ball pythons seem a little dim, but they still don't compare to retics when it comes to brains. They have kind of a watered down monitor lizard behavior thing going on. Certain monitors can be rewarding to keep too btw. Ackies monitors for example are criminally underrated as far as pet lizards go.

Do you agree that male retics are more aggressive than female retics when they get to breeding age, and if so would that still be valid in a collection without females or females of a different species.

robert 0 it’s generally mal practice to feed any type of wild caught prey to captive animals as wild caught prey could contain disease/parasites etc.

    • @MsGhost87

ALWAYS freeze ANY & ALL wild caught meals for your snakes!
There's a guide on how long for what type of animal due to the types of diseases/parasites they can carry & how long to freeze inorder to kill any & all parasites, virus & or diseases.
I know you posted this comment 4 months ago so, I hope you ended up researching this instead of feeding your snake a wild caught specimen.
Hope all is well with your snake 🐍

A Burmese, Reticulated or African Rock can easily bring down another predator like the Alligator and Crocodile. You are keeping these as PETS? I just hope they do not get loose and kills someone in their sleep.
