I got 4C hair and my ugly stage was rough. But I stuck through it and now I’m coming up on 3 years. My locs always get compliments now. Just persevere !!
2020 is the perfect year for the ugly stage because you're spending less time in public now.. Salons & barbershops been closed down so the rough look is more common & understandable.. People are focused more on you wearing a mask & keeping away from them, than what's on our heads..
Exactly right now is the best time to start doing dreads we all quarantine still in a way so by the time we kinda get back to normal living ways your dreads are going to be beautiful

After about 6 months with no change I almost gave up on my Locs. I discovered the crochet method and it helped! I’m only about 9 years and 6 months in now.
2 months into my hitop set and I'm hype, I started the journey for confidence and spiritual reasons. I heard the longer your locs get the more wisdom you gain over time.
Gotta say whats said is pretty spot on. I grew my fro out about 6-7 months before getting comb coils and my hair looked exactly like his, and after a month or so I got a retwist with a crochet hook. This was only 4ish months ago and my locs are already well past my eyes and ears (since I have a full set). I've been getting retwists once a month and every time I walk out of there its like the ugly phase all over again for a few days lmao. Just trust the process
Thanks so much! Future Fellow Natural hair stylist RUclipsr here! Again thank you for showing 3c4a hair locing like mine, I’m considering locing again!✊🏽❤️
I started my locs on supershort hair (less than 3 inches) with the sponge method and then moved on to interlocking. Honestly I dont think they look bad/ugly at all.
You oughtta just leave the two strands in fam, they’ll lock in two strand form. So by separating after two months, you’ll undo a lot of locking that has happened in the first 2 months. I started mine with two strands. If you want a higher dread count, make sure your two strand sections aren’t too big.
@@petersullivan1409 Correct.two strand twist is a very good method. You can dictate how thick you want them and they look boom when matured.Just avoid gels /waxes. You don't want then trapped inside your locs.
I'm doing natural free form, no towel, no sponge, just letting them be. My hair is 3c/4a and about 7 inches stretched out. After just 5 days the back of my hair already has 3 baby dreads.
Oh hey, we have the same hair type mixture! I also used to get matted hairs after just a few days of not detangling properly. I just started finger coils on my hair. What does your process look like now? I'm curious!
I remember I started a free form just to avoid the “ugly” stage but then I cut them off late last year, I had waves for 2 months and I got bored, so now I’m growing my hair back out and I’m getting my hair twisted in about a week
January coming will be 1 year since I’ve been growing my hair, the plan is to go another year and then loc it up, curious to see and show y’all how it looks.
I started my locs over 6 inches and I’m going through the ugly stage bc I’m only 5 months into the journey. I started wearing it up more to hide it but I want to stop. Can’t wait to see my locs get longer.
I’m going through the ugly stage but my hair is long enough for braids so I get them braided every 2 weeks and get a cut so it never looks “ugly” even though it’s not ugly it’s just not at the length I want it yet
I hate to say it but I did not make it out the ugly stage. Just yesterday I was contemplating if I should take them out or not since they were so short and ugly and I’m so impatient so I took them out sadly
I went through my ugly stage and I started towel rub but my scalp was exposed on the sides(beedee bee) so I just combed my hair out, it was still short so I'll prob wait for full year and just get instant dreads. For more context I was 4 or 5months in I think now. Da ugly stage tuff
I'm going free I feel like I avoided the ugly stage. For one,I have a high top fade 2. My hair was about 5-6 inches when I started last May and my hair is thick . 3. Mine are free form so it just looks like I have the "thot boy" cut rn . Also free forming hides the scalp ,which I love
Millz yeah but isn’t that if it’s too tight when it becomes a problem? Also if you don’t care for your hair well enough. Just a normal retwist should be fine especially if you don’t want the messy dreads looks anymore.
I’m in the military for another 9 months and by the time I get out I will have about 15 months of Afro that I will lock. Will my locs be the same length as someone that started growing their hair at the same time but but stated the locking process months ahead of me?
Your hair will shrink either way once you lock it. That’s what mine did. I had A LOT of hair when I was a loose natural but once I locked it it shrunk a lot. But once they start to lock they will begin to lock. I’m 9 months in now.
I recently crochet hooked my dreads but they are stiff and basically stand straight up what do you think I should do to help them relax and become less stiff??
i just got instant locs bc my curl pattern was JACKED and now it’s too straight and damaged. i lost half my length from back combing so i feel i’m in the ugly stage too just bc it’s short

1) What is the ideal length to start dreads?
2) What are the benefits of doing twists (like you're doing) vs crochet hooks?

re-twisting thins the roots and hair out. Eventually they will break or drop out. Best stick to free form/towel/sponge
