Currently combing mine out. I had them for 7 years! Recently cut them from waist length to collarbone length due to the heat, last night I made up my mind to just comb them out & start over. I'm retaining a lot of hair! 😊
That’s good! What are you gonna do different with your new set of locs?
How long did it take you?
exactly what i want to do but i’ve had mine for 15 years smh
I saturate my locs individually (with castor oil) as I take them out… it takes me about 5 mins to take out an 8” inch loc… I’ve have to take a few out along the journey mostly to either marry two small locks or separate a lock that was too heavy… I’m extremely tendered headed, and the process is pain free with the oil… I tried taking it out with water, that was a night mare….✌🏾
The cleaner you keep your locks the easier it is to take them out… if you use a lot of product, you should do a few apple cider vinegar detoxes before you start the process of taking them out… it will be 100% easier and quicker…
Do you use castor oil along with conditioner?
@@seaonswaby5026ditto that question.
Thank you because I’m tender headed as well and will be using castor oil as well
Thank you for this gem. I used castor oil to take down my first two Loc’s yesterday after realizing water made it harder. It made it so much easier. Thank you veryyyyyy much!
Thank you for this. I plan on taking mine out next week.
Been growing my locz for about 12yrs now..they're really long down to my butt and I wanna try and comb them out.
This video just gave me the push I needed to comb mine out and start over!
I’m glad I could help!
Shalom that what I’m about to do😊😊😊👋🏽
Thank youu so much. I’m getting ready to start my loc journey & I wanted to make sure they can be properly taken down w/ o a lot of damage when I’m ready 😊

I thought I was the only one looking to see if I could take them out before I put them in lol

Im using locs to maintain my daughter's hair. We're both tired of fighting what her hair naturally wants to do (which is loc.)She's 9 with waist length 4a hair. I told her she can take them out when shes ready to care for her hair herself. Her hair shrank to her shoulders over the last month since i installed her locs. Im gonna show her this video.
The low maintenance of locs is everything! It’s nice to be able to just get up and go. She’ll still be retaining length and will be able to comb them out when she’s ready, if she decides to. I hope she enjoys her loc experience!
W mom
I really appreciate how detailed you were
This video was a masterclass in how to inform, instruct and demonstrate. Thank you so much.
Thank you for watching!
This is really good to see because ive seen people with longer hair than yours that come out with barely enough hair i was also scared to take down my locs but knowing i can save hair is a dub i currenly only had my locs 1 year im plan on taking them down on my 18 birthday which will be 3 years from now
Wow 😮 your locs grew really fast over 2 years and your hair’s beautiful
They say hair has the potential to grow 6 inches a year. I just was able to retain all the length with the locs. Thank you and thanks for watching!
Oh...your tutorials are wonderful!!!
Omg nooo . I legit came to your channel for an update on your beautiful loc journey 😩
Yeeess!!! Thank you for this video!! My 1st set of locs going on 8 years & definitely don’t want to just cut them off!! Very helpful!🫶🏾
You are so welcome!
Thank you 😮💨 definitely appreciate the video helping me out with my process
Thank you Tiana, God bless you and your family
Thanks for creating this. I just started my loc journey, but this is good to know.
Thank you for this. Had locs 6 years now and the longer they get, the harder it is for me. Ready to let go
Thank you so veeeeerrrrrrry MUCH for sharing! 😊
Thanks. I needed this! You answered all the questions I had.
Glad it was helpful!
Ain’t our hair amazing?❤❤❤❤. Thanks for this T
Thanks so much. Taking down my son's. We did it once before about 2 years ago and reloc'd. He's been freeform since 2018 so it's going to be some work.
Thank you I’m taking my locs down and I need to buy that comb
Thank you for this video! I'm trying to mentally get in the process of taking mine down. I didn't think it was this simple.
You’re welcome!
You made it look so easy!!
It’s not that hard but extremely tedious.
i’m taking down my locs to redo them into a style i’m going to love fr
I am ready to comb mine and start over. I am very tender headed.
This is great!!! I’ve head mine for a year but the way there were done I do not like how they look so I’m going to start over 😊
Always wanted to comb mine out to start them over maybe do a different size, this is the best video I’ve seen due to how simple it was..much appreciated 🌹
Thank you for watching! Would you want your locs smaller or larger if you were to start them over?
I want to take mine down to make them smaller.
Crazy, cause I was wondering when my favorite RUclipsr was gone upload again. Your day ones have missed you. Sad to see you combing out your locs. I’m in love with your content period so… BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR HAIR JOURNEY! ❤️
I appreciate this, thank you ❤️
Yea thank it’s time to take mine out thank you
Yeah its final, im combing my locs out. Im at the 2 year mark but i dont like my grid at all and its been bothering me for a while. Good news is that theyre thick and I have under 50 so it shouldnt take long. Thanks for the guide!
You’re welcome!
Ok Word . Much appreciated
I’ve had my locs a little over 2 years but I want them smaller and I just need my hair to feel free again. People charge so much to take these down and I get that but I might as well save myself the money. Thank you.
I’m taking my lock out this summer and OMG I’m so excited. I watch this video just so I know what to expect when I’m at the hairstylist and now I know that the girl that’s taking up my hair she will need to get it really wet and I hope she knows that because I’m 10 years old and I’m not trying to lose a lot of hair because I’m going into sixth grade, and I ain’t trying to get bullied bro
How long have you had your locs? You will lose the hair you weren’t able to shed while your hair was loc’d but it should be ok, shedding is totally normal even for loose hair. You’ll have to make sure your hair is really moisturized once they are combed out. Also don’t pay attention to what ppl say. Good luck with middle school!
Thank you for sharing
My beard has a huge dread. Thanks for the advice
Shalom sis thank you 😊👋🏽
Awesome video Thxs
I don't have locs but when I leave my hair in a bun for awhile it starts to twist together and now its a huge mess but thank you bc I was really considering cutting my hair. Now ik I just need to take my time

Definitely wait until you graduate to start the take down process. I remember those long hours at cosmo school 😅. Early congrats on graduating and enjoy your loose hair after the comb out!
@@TheTianaAlexandra yes😩 part of me wanna just do it now but ill probably be bald by grad day lmfao and thank you!!!
Yep this is why I'm growing my locs long really long then I'm combing them out so that regardless I'll still have long length still
Same ! Feel like the only way my hair will grow to my butt
Unfortunately that’s not guaranteed. Often times a cut is required after combing them out in order to have healthy even length hair. Just be aware your hair most likely won’t be the length of your locs when you comb them out
@@dominiquegreen813 I’m well aware of that ! Dead hair will shed ! Ends will need to be clipped! I will retain my healthy length though

Unraveling the loose top portion of the loc first?
I had locs and did a comb out . Never again. I plan on getting in the future and the next go around I’m cutting it off. My hand was in tremendous pain . Waiting for your next video.
This is my 2nd time combing my locs out and I feel you on just cutting it off. It’s sooo tedious 😓. The next video is dropping really soon 🤞🏾
Thank you
thank you bro cuz im kinda missing my free hair now
Does this take out interlocked and smaller locs as well?
Será que dá para fazer isso com locs feitos com agulha?
Thank you so much! This is giving me hope 🙌🏽 i just Wonder if it works on interlocked locs? Or only palm rolled?
You’re welcome! It can work on any locs from what I’ve seen. You just need patience.
Wow double the length after comb out🎉
Yes! I was quite surprised.
Combing my sons out Sunday. I miss his long curly hair 😂
I’m thinking about taking mines out
Love the video I've had my locs for 3 years and want to comb them out. Did you wait a few months without retwisting intentionally to have more new regrowth at the top?
Thank you for watching! I didn’t wait intentionally, I just didn’t have time to do my hair with having a baby in January.

Wish I had seen this video before cutting my 4 year locs...
Have you ever tried using a small crochet hook in addition to the comb? Lastly, I have a head full of wavy to poodle curly hair. Since I started using ETHIQUE Shampoo and conditioner bars with a vinegar rinse my hair is so much healthier. The bars are all natural oils I use Frizz Wrangler & The Gaurdian since my scalp produces 0 oil. They sell small trial sizes & the full bars last me 2 months, but I only wash once a week & oil my hair rhe other days. Just an idea. I'm super chemically sensative so bey-bey Migraines. Your advise would be very helpful. 💜 Nancy in Chicago
Wow I was going to just cut them off.
I am really thinking about getting rid of my Locs soon.
Cutting is definitely the quickest way to let them go but if you have the time and the will power this is the alternative ❤️
me being 12 (im on my mom computer) i dont really want locas anymore and ive been tryiig to find ways to commb them out but my mom thing that i wont have hair afterso i can prove this to her
Literally locking my baby girl hair to take it down in 3 years 😅
They charged me $500.00 dollars and my locks is to my bra strap. My financial situation will not allow me 😂
It's been a while but I want a new set.
😮Nah nah nahhhhh I’m taking down my locs now and it’s taking me like 45 minutes to comb out 1 loc my thumb is skinless at this point!😂😂😂😂im jealous I wish you were here with me😅
I promise you it was taking me 45 minutes per loc when I first started combing them down and then I found my rhythm after a few days 😂. How many do you have left?
ive only had mine for a year but I miss my hair sm so im gonna comb them out 😭
girl literally same here lol i’m 1 yr and a month in but my hair is still shoulder length so i’m gonna wait til around yr 2/3 to take them out for the length lol
Combing mine out now after 1yr. So far I've just used the metal end of comb and no conditioner, which has been fine. I'll try conditioner to see if it speeds things up, but I'm def starting from the bottom and using a bigger small toothed comb
Wish i saw this video 4 hrs ago, combing out my Locs and I’ve lost half of my length…..😢 devastated. Trying again when I’m less emotional.
I hope the rest of your take down goes well for you!
Would you recommend using a lice comb or horse brush to comb or locs ?
Which comb do you recommend?
I used a regular rat tail comb with a metal end. I suppose any comb with small teeth would work.
Thank you so much. I'm starting my loc journey next month and everyone been telling me I would have to cut my hair because "apparently" it's the only option.
You’re welcome and combing them out successfully is definitely an option. A time consuming one but an option nonetheless if you don’t want to cut your hair off. This is my 2nd time combing out locs on myself.
I’m in the middle of taking mine down now and my thumbs are aching! I’m taking a break because they hurt so bad. Did your thumbs hurt during the take out process? If so, how long did the pain last and how did you handle it while continuing to comb out your Locs?
Whew, yes! The pain of the comb poking that thumb is no joke! If I wanted to keep going, I’d adjust my finger position so the comb didn’t touch any fingers. I had to pace myself with the take down process because of having a newborn, so the times I wasn’t able to take them down I’d let my fingers rest. It didn’t hurt more than 48 hours. I took 14 days for my takedown. You can set a limit for yourself and stop before it gets painful.
Combing mines out as we speak it's day 7 ugh!! Lol but I'm retaining a lot of hair!! Itspast my bra like way past it
Wow! My locs are very thin..I want to comb them out but I'm afraid it will break off
Do you think 5 month old locs would be difficult to comb out? What's the time frame matched for still being able to get a productive comb out?
I combed my 1st set out at 5 months, it’s not hard at all. The less time you’ve had them, the easier it may be. However, you can comb them out no matter what length of time you’ve had them. I don’t think there’s a specific time frame for a productive comb out. It’s in the patience you have while doing it and making sure the loc is saturated with water and conditioner.
@TheTianaAlexandra can i comb out instant locs?
@@charitymatt463 yes, you can definitely comb out instant locs.
My locs are 20 inches five or take. I’m scared I’ll loose so much hair.
Mine are crocheted locks. Would this method also work with them?
Yes it would! You’re essentially just untangling your hair so as long as you have the items in the video and a lot of patience you can take a crocheted loc down too.
So when washing the hair the locs already open a bit on the roots. Could I just wash it multiple times for them to open completely?
It’s not locked at the root because that’s where the new growth is. Washing doesn’t help it open more than it already is.
Hey I’ve had my locs 8 years and I’m ready to comb them out now. I wanted to ask if it would be fine for me to also take my hair apart from the roof I heard you mention the root isn’t locked?
When you take down your locs or any type of braid style you want to start at the ends. But with the root area I’m talking about your new growth and the small section of hair at the top that’s still not mature. I’d just lightly untwist that section (if you get your locs palm rolled/twisted) and see how far I can go.
do you think i’ll be able to take my locs out like this if i started with twists?
Yes
Will this also work with locs started with two strand twists?
Yes
Im not worried about losing length, worried wbout losing all that shed hair might make my hair look thin or my locs will be real skinny if i want to loc up again. Do you think that losing all that shed hair would just be the same thing as if I had just waited til my hair was this long to lock up? If you know what mean? I think starting locs from shorter hair has the advantage that all that shed hair staying in the loc makes them appear thicker.
I understand your concern. Your hair sheds regardless no matter what styles it’s in. The difference when loc’d is that shed hair is going down the coil (in my case) and making the loc matte up. That’s just the process. Now I can’t speak for everyone but my hair is just as thick as it was before ever loc’n. It didn’t lose density because I combed them out.
The disadvantage of starting with longer hair I feel is that it shrinks up more and it takes longer for the locs to appear longer. The shed hair is doing the same thing as it would on shorter hair, making the loc thicker and helping it to loc. I think it’s easier to see growth as far as length is concerned when someone starts with shorter hair. The shed hair doesn’t have to go down as far if that makes sense. I’m speaking from starting with shorter hair my 1st set and with a little length the 2nd set.
@@TheTianaAlexandra thanks for you reply. Yeah no I don't mean density at the scalp/root but rather the appearance of higher density due to that shed hair being maintained in the locs themselves.
Like imagine you comb out a loc and then you lock it back up immediately using a crochet or whatever, necessarily that loc is going to be thinner having lost all that shed hair. Now multiply that by 60 locs (my loc count with sides and back faded and fairly thick locs) and I just wonder how different it will look. It's difficult for me to gauge how much thinner my locs will be and if I'm going to regret it because of it. The thing that gives me hope is the root of my locs are more or less the same size as the tips, so maybe it won't be so bad?
Also I don't want to do instalocks so your point about longer hair taking even longer to lock kinda scares me too. Anywya, appreciate your information!
I am looking to take mine down
I have that same measuring tape 😂
It got the job done lol 😂
I have had my locks since 2010, have I had these locks too long to think that I could comb them out, some of the locks broke off, and I had to combine a few. Do you have any tips you could share? Thank you
Hi! My locs were only 2 years old however I would look up loc comb outs on 10+ year locs. I’ve seen someone give insight on what to do for the double headed dragons (combined locs). You can still comb them out but in general it’s just an extremely tedious and time consuming task. Since you’ve had yours so long I assume they’re long in length and I’d cut half of my length or wherever you’re comfortable and save those locs, then comb out what I can salvage. That way if you want to go back to your locs you can use your own as extensions and attach them back. I hope I was able to help some.
Well damn . Yyou said time & patience
I work for amazon .. i really want to start over with my locs ..had them 9 years started off with yarn in my hair i knew NOTHING about then when i first made an oath for locs so there is alot of hands in my locs Nd im just knowing what and how exactly i want them .
With amazon schedule what could YOU perfer me too do with the time and how long do u think it would take me too take a whole head down ?
I hope i made sense via the internet
The time it would take depends on how many you have and the length and width of the locs. With your work schedule it may take longer to take down. Some people say it takes them a month+. If I were you I’d try to take one down on an off day and time it. Then knowing how long it takes you, you may be able to get a few down before or after work. I’d two strand twist the locs I’ve taken down so that they sort of blend in with the rest. I’d start in either the very back or the middle to conceal the loose hair.
how many locs did you have and how long did it take to comb them all out?
161 and 14 days
i’m combing mine out, do skinny locs take more time than thicker ones?
Whew, yes!! It’s easier to get the metal part of the comb through the thicker ones. Mine ranged in size all over my head and the ones in the back were smaller and took longer initially. Once you find your groove it’s not that bad.
My hair is loc’d up really close to the root for the most part. Ugh, if it even hurts for a little I’m cutting them off, it’s just hair.
I’ve cut all mine off before, I get it. That’s the quicker option and super satisfying as well lol. Like you said tho it’s just hair so whatever works best for you.
How long were you loc’d prior to this comb out?? Great video btw!!
2 years, 3 weeks. Thank you for watching!
@@TheTianaAlexandra I’m combining mine out at 2 years as well, on to my 3rd set of locs
Ty. Sick of them lol
Did you notice a difference in your curl pattern or its thickness after combing out your locs?
The first time I combed my locs out the curl pattern and thickness were the same. This time they both were the same but I did end up experiencing postpartum shedding, so I had to wait that out for a few months. That was hormonal tho so I don’t attribute that to the loc comb out.
What was the method you used to start your locks
Finger coils
Did you start off with ur hair that long when u locked it? If no About where did ur natural hair fall in length before u loc’d ? Also did u struggle with thinness after combing out?
No, my hair was probably a little lower than shoulder length. I have a one year loc update video where I show my loose hair before loc’n up both times if you’d like to see a visual.
I also didn’t struggle with thinness due to the comb out but the hair that wasn’t able to shed for the 2 years I was loc’d was lost. That didn’t make it thin tho. I also had a baby at the beginning of the year and had a bit of postpartum shedding mixed in, but it’s still extremely thick.
However, I did have a lot of split ends. I got them cut off a few days after the comb out and even with the cut my hair is still the longest it’s ever been.

Hi, I'm asking for some help: I have long dreadlocks and when I tried to untangle them, the length of my hair reduced a lot and it became super short. How do I maintain the size?
@@mirandagilouana2779 it may depend on the way they were maintained during you having them. I have noticed that sometimes with longer locs they are shorter in length when combed out.
I have twist and interlock... willnit work the same??
Yes you’ll definitely still be able to comb them out but how much you’ll be able to salvage may vary. I’ve seen someone say that they had a lot of breakage combing out interlocked locs.
I’m going to cut mine soon! Thanks for this video. I’m a little nervous at how long it’ll take to comb them out, and what I’m gonna look like in between. How long did this take you? Sry if you answered this already.
Taking this set out took 14 days exactly. I two strand twisted the loose hair in bigger sections as I took them down.
What conditioner is a good one
Something thick and moisturizing. I’m using an Aussie conditioner here and that was pretty good.
Sorry if I missed this being said in the video but how long did it take to comb out all your locs. I can imagine it must have taken over a week 🥲
Your hair was beautiful before and is still beautiful now ❤
Thank you! It took two weeks exactly. I could’ve gotten it done faster but, mom life lol!
@@TheTianaAlexandra Lol don't worry I have a 5 yo and can totally relate. Even doing a retwist with him around drags it out and extra hour. I got curious last year and brushed out one loc, which took 15mins too, so kudos for persevering for 2 weeks!
Can you still comb out locs that have been done with 2 strand starter locs ???
Absolutely, I did this method cuz it was self maintained and easy to do. And it was really easy to take down surprisingly
Just be sure to use water and conditioner and drench them locs
